Velvet Assassin has been getting some facetime recently on various sites, but I hadn't checked it out till this morning, so forgive my surprise that the main character in a World War II shooter is a woman. How cool is that. And she doesn't have to use her moody powers to blow shit up, just old-fashioned bad-ass-atude. I see potential, but of course it's far too ambiguous to tell at this stage. Besides the whole woman as the lead character angle, the game features a nice mix of assassinations and sabotage, all set in "hyper-realistic, dreamlike settings that are modeled after actual WWII locations." WTF? I've never thought of World War II battlegrounds as "dreamlike."
The game includes a dozen levels and a variety of weapons and stealth gadgets.

If people knew the real stories about some of the women in the French resistance, they'd be amazed.
Lucie Aubrac should have her own game.
The game itself looks good. But it's not showing me anything I haven't seen before and looks like it plays very meh.
"Tits monster or Ass monster."
This has been posted before. Nobody can forget that memorable line.
looks bad
I must say some of the art for this game is absolutely stunning, I love the contrast in some of the screenies.
Stealth and guns? Check.
World War II? Check.
Pandering hypersexuality? Probably check.
Not quite a million seller yet. We'll have to see.
I know its in the early stages, but so far its setting off my meh-sensor.
lol. Solid snake with boobs and ****y.
Manon Batiste from MoH Underground was a woman
@Samuraidino: Yeah. MOH: Underground was the third FPS I ever played, and probably had the most lasting impact on me. My standards are pretty high for this sort of thing, and it doesn't sound like "historical accuracy" or "reverence" had much to do with it... especially considering their reference photos consisted mostly of supermodels in bikinis.
I wasn't aware that's how you honored women who sacrificed their lives for their countries.
@mr_dimsum: Yep, I remember the vid also...and that line
So far, doesn't look like anything really new. If the main character was a man, it'd probably be getting a whole lot less coverage. Well, more clothing coverage, but less media coverage. You know what I mean.
They didn't say WWII battlegrounds, they said WWII locations. Doesn't that just mean locations from that era?
Looks like a rip of Goldeneye with a woman... that said, I'd still play it if it cost $10. 12 levels = failure. Also, I do believe it reads like 'We took real WW2 settings and made them dreamlike' rather than 'We used real, dreamlike WW2 settings in our game'. :)
The prospect of dynamic shadows to hide in is pretty cool, but could make level design a real bitch.
Anyone else notice this is a Gamevideos video from a GameTrailers feed?
I actually have marginally more hope for the game than I feel comfortable with.
The frame rate looks horrible.
Man, that shotgun sure makes short work of trucks.
@Aethyr: Brawl. Add me.: ... I suppose the big glaring "PRE-ALPHA GAMEPLAY" warning was completely lost on you?
Framerate is usually the absolutely last thing to be optimized.
@Aethyr: Brawl. Add me.: OK, you did read the VERY BEGINNING that said in big ass letters, Pre-Alpha.
Stages of Development:
Design
Pre-Alpha
Alpha
Pre-Beta
Beta
Gold
This is a good example of why you dont show early dev footage of games. This does nothing to inspire me to remember anything about this game other than it looks weak. The premise also isnt mass appeal enough. Whos going to spend $60 plus tax to buy this?
pre alpha... let's hope so is the type face.
Looks like Splinter Cell dumbed down about fifty notches with a little T&A thrown in. The fact that its based on a real person (real events?) does nothing for me. Maybe if I actually knew more about said events, I might be interested...
Also, I want that monitor he's using.
Eh, I'm still not sold on this one yet. I'd like to wait and check it out when it's a little farther down the development line.
Wow, this looks better than I had ever expected. The shadows were pretty amazing in a couple of scenes as well as the autumn-themed level with that glowing tree.
Check about 3/4 of the way through for a picture of Eileen Galvin superscripted by the words "Desired Quality."
At the part where the computer is scrolling through cocept art it looks like a picture of Sam Fisher from splinter cell in the bottom corner. Same frame where it says Desired Quality.
Ah it looks ok so far.
Will have to keep an eye on this one, since these kinda titles are easy to go either way on the spectrum. D:
Zo tight, I don't even think I can swipe my ATM card between her butt cheeks. Meow!
I'll be keeping an eye on this one, looks interesting.
A shotgun blows up a truck with one shot but a bad guy takes five bullets to the head and all he does is flinch?
@ban_hammer: Its a videogame what do you expect.
@Witzbold: the exact opposite
@ban_hammer: Hows about you join the USMC then. Im sure you will get a lot of REALISM there.
For fucks sakes people.
It's a great concept, but I'm waiting to see the execution first.
I really don't get this game. They're basing this on a real life spy, which supposedly enriches the story, but the screenshots make the game seem like a mix between Splinter Cell and Gears of War. In other words, it looks like a mindless shooter. Also, the female spy the woman in Velvet Assassin is modeled after was captured, tortured, and ultimately sent to a concentration camp to die. I'm not saying that's necessarily something you put in a game, but omitting it is omitting a rather poignant aspect of her story. There are just some war stories you can't translate into entertainment, and I think Violette Szabos tale is one of them.
Realtime shadow thing is kinda hot!
frame rate is attrocous. I hope that improves...not that I'm going to buy this game. Looks just like any other boring shooter.
@Witzbold: the realism doesn't bother me, its how the game play will work out, I like hiding behind cars instead of running and gunning, and cover is essential in a stealth game, so headshot a dude, all he does is spin around and shoot the car to kill you instead
@Cruithne: I thought this game -was- supposed to be about the French Resistance. I'm kinda disappointed.
That said, it might still be ok if they get the stealth right. I have yet to try a game that rivals the Thief series intense skulking in the shadows action.
I can't see it happening with this one, but a man can dream.
Yes, i'd have to say when the designer mentions the hiding in dynamic shadows, I thought of Thief where you extinguish torches to create areas of shadow to stealth through.
Also addressing a lot of people's concerns about story, has anyone looked at the Bioshock story development? Some crucial parts of the story were left last minute. The main concentration was on gameplay which arose out the the capabilities of the game engine.
So I'd guess it's important to sort out the capability of your engine and it's rendering and AI etc before going story. And judging from their comments, that's what they're doing.
Looks good to me!
Isn't "hyper-realistic, dreamlike settings" an oxymoron?
so, is this like an adaptation of Paul Verhoeven's Black Book (Zwartboek) ? Cause that would be sweet.
I saw some of the video footage at GameTrailers. It looks interesting, and the "take morphine in the present to change position in the flashback" mechanic could be interesting, provided it doesn't become unbalanced.
The framerate did appear more than a little choppy in the video footage I saw, but the footage was clearly labeled as being "pre-alpha", so a later build of the game may fix that issue.
Man, you guys. How can you decide whether you're going to buy a game or not based only on pre-alpha footage? That's ridiculous.
@Pinhead: I agree, kind of. It does remove a huge chunk of her actual life story, but
a) I would rather not play a game where I control a prisoner in a concentration camp, I have enough trouble holding tears back just listening to Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland, 1945".
b) It would be ridiculously hard to implement as gameplay, apart from quicktime-events - and I fucking hate those things.
