Listen to this! According to the Japanese PlayStation.com page, today's update also allowed users to put PlayStation 2 game installs on the PS3's hard drive. That's besides stabilizing PS3 software. So, there ya go!
PS3 Update [PlayStation.com via Strategy Informer]
Eds Note: So according to Strategy Informer: "Seems that the Japanese website is actually detailing information about compatibility with Final Fantasy XI, which required a HDD for the PS2. So, any games that require HDD installs for the PS2 will now work on the PS3." Cruuuuuuud. Nothing to get *that* excited about! Well, unless you're stoked to play FFXI on your PS3 it is.

Oh shit! That is good news indeed! Time to Install all the NIS games!
An answer... Yes! Although, I'm not that into it... I was looking around for what it did...
Read the source.
Color me confused, does this mean just playing my PS2 games without the disc in the drive, or just reduced loading times?
For you lazy people.
Update 2: Seems that the Japanese website is actually detailing information about compatibility with Final Fantasy XI, which required a HDD for the PS2. So, any games that require HDD installs for the PS2 will now work on the PS3.
Awesome. There's a good precedent if ever there was one. Microsoft, are you listening?
thats cool, i want to borrow god of war and install it, and technically i don't even own it. I kind of like PS3 better then the 360 now. Both are multimedia sluts, but at least the PS3 is an easy cheaper multimedia slut.
Unbelievable.That's an awesome update! But does this mean you could've installed PS1 games in the past?
Hold on, looks like the source link has changed it's info. It's not PS2 installs, it's just an update to allow PS2 games that require installs to work
@skobar: Why do you have to ruin good news with your truths?
@IronsUK: Damn, I got really, really excited too. Still a nice update though.
"Update 2: Seems that the Japanese website is actually detailing information about compatibility with Final Fantasy XI, which required a HDD for the PS2. So, any games that require HDD installs for the PS2 will now work on the PS3."
there's gotta be some backend stuff with this update as well considering that the 40gb's aren't backwards compatible. that would mean that this update is useless for them.
Sigh.
I can't wait for the first comment of, "Well, Sony screws it up again. I would have gotten a PS3 if this update had been true, but now I'll never get one..."
I just tried to install God Hand and it would not let me.
I guess that just for FFXI games that need the HDD
Aw, I was excited for a minute...
PLEASE Sony, PS2 games downloadable from the PS Store next!
@omegasc:
FUCK. T_T
I don't get it, if I remember correctly FF11 worked on the PS3 long before this update.
Too good to be true, indeed.
If you could truly install PS2 games permanantly on the drive, I'd be renting them from my local video store, upload them, and bring them right back! (well, at least the ones I'm on the fence about - I'd pay for and support the better titles).
@omegasc: Fuck. D:
@Gannoc: Sony wouldn't be screwing up. This feature would be groundbreaking, but if they haven't developed it yet, it's not "screwing up."
Either way, I'd love to be able to rip full games onto my PS3, but the logistics don't really make sense. They would lose sales of PS2 games since people would just rent and rip.
This story is spreading like cancer.
This only allows Backwards Compatibility with PS2 titles that required the HDD. Such as FFXI.
I expected more from you. Mr Ashcraft.
@muu: Yeah there was a thing in the store that was called PS2 System information Data"
I dunno...
My thinking is that there is more to this update then meets the eye.
FAIL.
@njhardcoreguy: Yeah, I know, but after reading the comments section regarding the minor firmware update today, I expect anything.
(People were claiming that Sony had failed by releasing a firmware upgrade that didn't have in-game XMB, Home, etc.)
Damn...
This was a download in the Playstation Store that came out around launch time that you downloaded if you had FFXI or any other game that used it. I guess now its mandatory. Though finding it in the PS Store now would be a needle in a haystack.
@Brian Ashcraft:
skobar mentioned it in the third and fifth post as well.
To be fair, installing PS2 games would be interesting, though wholly unnecessary.
BTW Bash don't let these tools talk shit about you.
Everyone has a mishap once in a while, but apparantly they think you're perfect like a god.
Heyyyy...some gods wield hammers. Ban hammers.
Yeah, I was like, "Whaaa?!?!" That would allow people to rent and install games ... Sony would be offering people a free pass to piracy lol It would be a cool feature, but it won't happen. Now ... they should allow that with PS1 games since they aren't produced anymore. I wouldn't mind that. I bet it would make remote play work better, too.
I still think PS2 games over Remote Play would be amazing. Installing them to the HD would be the next step.
Damn it, that would have been cool. :(
Neat little update.I hope they figure out a way to do remote play with games that you could download to your HDD like PS1,2 titles.That would be neat.I know some,but make it blanket across the board.
Has anybody looked at the Sony blog..Jeez that thing is getting out of hand with trolls crying about XMB,Home and other crap.They need a ban hammer quick!
I thought that there was a download in the playstation store that did the same thing, although I haven't tried it... it was called something like "Playstation 2 system data" and in its notes it mentiond something about the HDD...
Too good to have actually been true.... Besides it probably wouldn't work for 40GBs due to a perplexing lack of hardware emulation.
@IIGrayFoxII:
I remember downloading that too when the store first came out because I thought I was going to use it for some SOCOM maps. Heh, the PS3 had sufficient games at that point to make me think twice.
@Tyber_Zann:
Hah. Sure thing buddy.... Till you find that you can spend a few hundred a month somewhere else and possibly more necissary. Piracy would be off the charts.
I take it that if you own a ps3 that can not do ps2 backwards compatibility then this update is meaningless?
god of war 1 and 2, welcome to renting again!!!!!
Damn way to lift us up and bring us down, I guess It's back to hoping I can still find a 60 gig online when i have the money.
no home, I am dissapointed. No store update, doubly dissapointed.
You already could install ffxi on ps3, like a little after the ps3 came out you could, you just had to download something from the playstation store.
@Kupo!: agreed Im a bit confused about this, FFXI has been able to be played since release....
You had me SOOO excited. And then I read the update. Oh, sniffles. To install ALL my PS2 games? And possibly my PS1 games? That would have been like a dream come true.
It's the feature I never thought about - but now, me wants.
@Falconfire:
I believe this update added more games to the compatibility list or something. Scroll to the bottom of this page for a chart: [64.233.179.104]
@Falconfire: I'm confused as well this was something you could do at PS3 launch so what the hell is the blogger talking about?
Nope, this doesn't work at all. I don't have FFXI, but none of Capcom's games (SF Alpha Anthology, RE Outbreak 1& 2) install.
Oh how my hopes soared and fell...
I wish they would finally add the in game XMB. It would also be nice if you could listen to music and browse the web while in remote play. It works when not using remote play, so why add this limitation when using the PSP to view? Being able to access all the PS3 settings via remote play would be nice too, but I can understand why that limitation was put in place.
Folks read the link I just posted. A game called Nobunaga's Ambition Online has just gotten HDD install support. It's an MMORPG just like FFXI.
Sweet. I remember reading an article in EGM like soo many years ago about installing FFX onto the PS2 HDD.
This story and the following update is equivalent to a textbook case of blue balls.
PS2 Complete Software Emulation on any PS3 in 3, 2, 1..... :P
It should come. I hope it does. I can't say I desperately need it, but since I got rid of my PS2 recently (due to lacking the space in my setup), it wouldn't hurt.
Umm... FF11 has been backwards compatible on the PS3 for awhile now. I dunno what you guys are reading or where, but you've been able to install it to a "dummy" PS2 HDD install on the PS3 since, like, last year.
