Add this to the list of things GTAIV's doing that its predecessors didn't: at least one of the new title's radio stations will feature only one artist, who'll be providing an all-new set of tracks for the game. Hip-hop DJ Green Lantern has told King magazine:
Somebody within my camp said that they were interested in doing some stuff. We sat down and it ended up like a whole radio show. This particular show, there's a little bit of budget involved. It's not the normal licensed-out music. When you jump in the car, you're going to be able to hear a whole Green Lantern radio show filled with nothing but exclusive music I produced for the game. I think it's the first time that's ever been done.Not the biggest fan of Green Lantern myself (thinking a DJ Krush station would be perferable), but as a concept, it's a good one. Hopefully there's more like it.

UPDATE - OK, little confusion here. Mostly my bad. Rockstar have let us know that while Lantern's got his own show on the station - on which every song played is one he's produced - it's not the only show on the station. So there is more than one artist. Sorry for the confusion, but hey, good news is that makes it sound like these stations have a lot of content.

I'd love to see the ability to stream online radio. After 40+ hours in a GTA game, you've heard all the music and talk radio, so the realtime variety would be sweet.
Every time I hear something about this game, it makes April 29 just seem that much further away.
Great idea with the radio station, though I've never heard of Green Lantern before. I guess it doesn't matter. I'll probably be listening to the talk radio stations for most of the time I'm in a car. Lazlo ftw.
@njhardcoreguy: You could just put music on your hard drive (if you have a 360, not sure about the PS3).
I'm curious if that means he gets a whole station, or if there is a show on one of the stations that is just him. I'd love it if they work the whole realtime angle into the radio, where if you listen at one time of day its one thing (morning rush hour=stupid talk, for example), and then later on that station is playing something else. Not that the old GTA radio stations weren't cool, but I could see that adding a ton of variety.
Also, I'll probably resort to my own music after a few weeks either way, like I always do ;)
lol dj khush how about dj honda? or if were just staying 80's and not japan specific Mister Magic or Red Alert, Chuck Chillout. No problem with Green Lantern atleast he is an actual Dj not soe kid playng songs off a CD or an Ipod which is the trend now a days.
@peAr_nectAr: IIRC Green Lantern was Eminem's Concert DJ for awhile, associated with Dre, G-Unit, etc.
I like a lot of Green Latern's mixes, but they could have gotten DJ Cannon and DJ Drama. Gangta Grizzills
Stuff that, get some Nujabes cranking on it.
How bout radio Ninja Tune? :P
@peAr_nectAr:
I'd rather listen to what they put together in-game; using my harddrive music spoils me. There's absolutely no reason to play Gone Guru in every scenario, but given the freedom to, I certainly will.
So dope. So excited. I'm totally fanboying over this ish, it's crazy.
I have so much faith in the presentation of GTA games that I'm anticipating updates to their website the way every cat I know what anticipating new characters being shown over on the smash dojo.
"you're going to be able to hear a whole Green Lantern radio show filled with nothing but exclusive music I produced for the game."
Um yeah, no thanks. I'd rather listen to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean...on a loop.
@BenignMuffin: whoa. someone else knows about ninja tune? sweet deal! i've got the 10 year box set on my hard drive.
as for green latern, he's done some cool stuff. the beastie boy mixtape, a new york state of mind, is the best piece of hip hop that's come out in years next to kool keith, mos def and the macho man randy savage.
[en.wikipedia.org]) the greatest album ever.
+ Watch video
@BenignMuffin: Apart from Luke's wish about DJ Krush, that most be the best idea I've heard today.
Too bad it won't happen.
Hopefully they will try to do this with other music genres aswell.
Lazlo and user soundtracks for me...
There's only one radio station available in game.
And it's 24-Hour DJ ATOMICA!
I could care less what else is on the radio, but a GTA without Lazlow just wouldn't be quite the same.
having a one guy station seems like a horibble idea to me...
if theres vocals in there anyway.
it'll be a compelte eff up
I've never even heard of Green Lantern... except the comic book anyway.
What would be cool would be not only if I could stream internet radio, but since Sirius lets me listen over the web if I could login and actually listen to sirius while playing the game. That'd be awesome.
@BenignMuffin:
Radio Ninja Tune would be AWESOME. Or at least The Herbalizer Radio.
Ah, well custom soundtracks for the win..Although I've always enjoyed GTA's radio stations. Even the talk radio ones. It's one of my favorite things about the game.
Wow. :o Maybe I'll like him *probably the ONLY kotakuite who listens to Rap*
@Vidril: you arent alone brother! *fistpound*
@peAr_nectAr: So true. A month and a half away and it feels like forever.
And Green Lantern has been a hip-hop mixtape DJ for quite some time. Don't know why they chose him over DJ Envy or WhooKid ... or someone like Funkmaster Flex. Maybe they just charged too much.
I wonder what other random DJ's they'll have in there.
Guns don't kill people rappers do.
They can put as much time as they want into these stations...custom soundtracks are all I care about.
That said, how long before we see in-game streamable XM or Sirius in a game like this? Bundle the game with a discounted subscription price, and away we go.
THANK GOD for the 360 CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS!
I'll make my own Playlists with my own songs and name them my own radio stations, either on my iPod or my external drives.
I am happy to hear DJ Green Lantern in game.Rockstar has roots in hip hop. If you go to their site you will see "The Beaterator", "The Rhymerator" there is that documentary "The Sunday Driver", The "Upload" has a DJ contest. They are one of the few developers that has legit underground hip-hop in their products.
@Vidril: Not alone indeed.WE are kind of anonymous on this site but you should know. Hip-Hop is universal.
@jfx316: New York State of Mind is fantastic.
GTA games all have had phenomenal sound tracks that cater to pretty much everyones tastes. Also the humor you find on them with the talk shows and advertisements are hilarious and brilliantly written. Its kinda upsetting to hear everyone just listens to custom soundtracks. This is only one artist, if he doesnt suit your taste, I bet there will be one.
Lies! Games have never had soundtracks by a single composer before!
@jackal888:
seconded
@Collapse The Control: I think custom soundtracks can take you out of the game.In GTA San Andreas If you completed a mission the radio station may have a news break and mention what you just did and sometimes it wraps up the story. If custom soundtracks could have commercials from the game and news breaks I would use them.
Meh. Real radio stations are generally forbidden from playing more than three songs by the same artist in a on hour block of programming. GTA has always tried to push the envelope of simulating reality in a videogame. This seems like a step backward.
To be fair, they don't have a very deep simulation of reality. They instead have very many shallow simulations of very many pieces of reality. So maybe it's not that big a deal. That's just my first impression.
Hmmm.... not true. KJAH on GTA III featured only one artist, The Scientist. Hell, it was only one album; The Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires.
Does this mean that there will still be other Radio Shows on GTA 4? because a few of my most enjoyable experiences with the GTA games were those funny talk show hosts and guests.
KChat was a personal fav.
Not true... KJAH on GTA III featured only one artist, The Scientist.
Ninja Tune rules. And that Scientist album (Scientist Rids The World...) is wicked as well.
Green Bumhole more like...
I agree, would love to see/hear some Ninja Tune or DJ Krush, much better idea.
Oh and to whoever said underground, Dj Green Lantern is about as underground as clouds..
Awesome - I love Green Lantern. I hope this means we'll also get a bit of his work with Immortal Technique.
@Evi1Weevi1: And Flashback FM was all about Giorgio Moroder.
I'd like to hear a real 80s channel there though. More like Flash than Flashback.
@heretrix:
mos definitely, Herbaliser would be awesome drive-by music :P
Though, considering the game's russian theme, DJ Vadim is a must-have
@jackal888: Yeah, it depends tho. If the game lets you incorporate your music into or if it is a overlay. But either way, it is a free roaming open world game, I can and will find out what is going on.
GTA3 also had a station that played nothing but songs from the Scarface soundtrack, which was done entirely by Giorgio Moroder. GTA3 Liberty City Stories, likewise, had a station with nothing but Giorgio's music. I'm hoping they continue the trend with the new game, since it's also set in Liberty City.
Make it have a user customized station (i.e. my own files) and I'll be forever happy.
There's at least two stations in the previous games that had just one artist. I think GTA III had a station that was just the Scarface soundtrack, in fact.
I preferred the Saints Row mp3 player.
Yeah, I don't get what the negative hubbub is about, it's just proof that there may be more than one rap station, and that Green Lantern is going to have a channel all to himself...
He's probably did a track or tape for your favorite rapper, definitely is respectable on the boards, and there's no doubt we'll be hearing from his friends.
So technically it won't be a station for just one artist, as I'm definitely sure that he'll be using his ties in the industry to have a few known emcees on his beats...
@TheRunningboard7
Actually, from the previews I've read, there is a portable music device you can acquire in GTAIV, ie, the mp3 player from Saint's Row. There's a number of other things they're "borrowing" from SR as well, which is a good thing as far I'm concerned. They didn't take SR's aiming system though unfortunately.
@TheRunningboard7: This may get double posted, first time I typed this it didn't show up...
There actually is a portable music player in GTAIV from the previews I've read. You eventually acquire it, but you don't start out with it. Not sure if it plays specific songs or just the radio stations. There's a few other things they're "borrowing" from Saint's Row, which is a good thing. They're not using SR's aiming system though unfortunately.
@LongDarkBlues: Heh - personally I only know Green Lantern (I mean, heard of him, but beyond that) from the one Immortal Technique record. I doubt they'll include that one (lyrics) in the game? Would be cool though.
