Sonic Unleashed Trademarked By Sega. What's this? Another possible Sonic the Hedgehog game from Sega? You don't say! Sonic Unleashed is the newest filing from the Japanese publisher, one that applies to "video game software [and] computer game programs." Yes, those are the entirety of the details. We just hope it's far, far better than the shittacular Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games known simply as Sonic the Hedgehog.

I wasn't aware that Sonic was leashed in the first place.

  • It's hard to get too excited, but I still like the blue fuzzball.

  • This is, like, being told you're getting oral sex in the dark, yet we know we're about to dip our wicks into a salad shooter...

  • I really wish they'd remake the old sonic games in HD like Capcom is doing with SFII. I haven't played a worthwhile Sonic game in a long time. Sonic Rush was close, but just didn't do it for me.

  • It's the name of Sega's new Console.

OH BELIEVE IT. It'll blue, with wings, and come packaged with Shenmue 3 and a Sonic dash board theme.

And no I'm not drunk. Or high. Just delusional.

  • They should try making Sonic short and pudgy again :)

  • Sonic is for kids who don't know what good games are. Sonic doesn't have it anymore.

  • I hope it revives the sonic series and bring it back too its former glory. Then again this is Sega were talking about.

  • If they can make it as good as the Sonic segments from 1999's Sonic Adventure, I'm sold.
If they fire the current voice actor, I'll buy two copies.
If they improve the music from ear-imploding to just so-cheesy-its-awesome, I'll take 3.

  • They should give him a gun and have him shoot the bejeezus out of things. That would work...oh, wait....

  • Honestly, if they had just FINISHED Sonic for the 360 and PS3 it would have been enjoyable.

  • When I got the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP, I was excited about playing Sonic the Hedgehog again for the first time in years and years and years.

Then I played it. Then I realized how bad Sonic really was.

Never in my life have I seen a franchise that relies more on nostalgia than any other.

Sonic can't go back to former glory because, it never had glory in the first place.

  • Star Wars Unleashed? Wait.. What? Sonic? Oh..

  • @ShinyNew: You do realize Shadow sold extremely well....

  • I really enjoyed Sonic Next Gen so I can't wait for the next one.

  • "We just hope it's far, far better than the shittacular Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games known simply as Sonic the Hedgehog."

We've been hoping so at each announcement of a new Sonic game.

Let's not act all "beaten wife" about this; he's a jerk and he's not going to be as sweet as he was back in the day. Time to dump that bastard.

@Kyle81: So did "Star Wars Episode 1".

  • Interesting, earlier today I got an email from Sega that linked me to a invite only survey that asked if I would buy a new Sonic game. I picked Maybe.

  • please make it 2D in HD with classic sonic as a selectable skin & classic art direction/influence

It better not be a pet-related spinoff. You never know with Sega nowadays.

  • @Aethyr: Brawl FC = 2191-7320-1294: Big The Cat's Adventures Through The Pound.

    Sounds like a sure thing.

  • The sonic rush series on the DS is good, mainly cause it like the older games. The main problem with games nowadays is instead of trying to figure out how to make him work in a 3d environment, they think adding a bunch of new characters that no one cares about makes for a good experience. Sonic relies no more on nostalgia then mario does, they just need to figure out how to innovate and make his style of gameplay work today.

  • They should remake Sonic The Hedgehog like they did New Super Mario bros, and use the Super Smash Bros. Brawl version of Sonic and still make it a sidescroller. It would be perfect. Maybe it's just me?

  • @Neo-Senku: I disagree.. I can start up and play just about any Mario game of years gone by (with the exception of Super Mario 2), and enjoy the hell out of it. Sonic? no. Sonic Pinball maybe.

  • I must say that sonic adventure on the dreamcast is my favorite 3D Sonic game still to this day.

  • @Crash McCloud: WHAT?

  • Sonic the Hedgehog for ps3/360 was such utter shit. That game single handedly forced me to never buy anything new without reviews unless it was a for sure a AAA title.

  • Why does the title make me think of a furry porn movie or something?

  • @ MrBionic:

That award, my friend, belongs to Zelda.

  • I still enjoy the old sonic games to this day, same for mario. But its just a taste thing i guess.

  • @Roto13:

    Lamo

  • (in reference to games that mostly rely in nostalgia)

  • Sonic Heroes was a pretty good game imo.

  • @hiroyukibatosai:

Ahem. I really enjoyed the first Sonic Next Gen and I can't wait for another

  • @globones: I can only re-play two zelda games. Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

  • @DXY! : Ask me about Bemani!: Agreed. Old-school Sonic still kicks ass. Even with the sub-par graphics I'd buy a compilation set for the PS3 if it came w/ all the Genesis games (even Sonic and Knuckles).

It's like playing Super Mario 3 or Truxton. Of course they're flat and not quite as engrossing, but every now and then they kill a few of my hours.

  • @globones: thats ALMOST right. old zeldas (and the new ones) just totally lack replay value, so playing the old ones is fine if you haven't before (try oracle of time/seasons. they were actually really cool) but once you've played them through to the end, thats it. its why i don't own OOT on the VC.

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the best Sonic game I played since Sonic Rush.

  • I don't even believe Sonic can be a good game anymore. After thinking about it, it simply doesn't mesh with what can be done and what would make the game fun. Everyone wants Sonic to be about blazing speed. But unless you return it to a linear environment, or a rail runner, you can't expect people to be ripping through levels without camera issues or simple reaction time problems. WE can't play at the speed we think Sonic should move at. Unless Sega changes something about the Sonic franchise, or we start wanting something different, the only type of game that Sonic will fit functionally is a racing game - and I don't want that. I guess I'm just expecting nothing good to come of Sonic ever again. Please, Sega, surprise me.

  • @StupidDufus: It's one of the first games that had sonic that was actually playable without falling off of something for no reason.

  • This is probably the new name for Bioware's RPG. You know, so the title doesn't sound like every other fantasy title on the market.

  • @hiroyukibatosai: Subspace Emissary.

  • they should make a 2d sonic game on the wii with a graphical style similar to that of Brawl.

    I'd buy it.

  • Maybe Sega will finally realize how terrible their efforts following Sonic Adventure 2 have been. Unfortunately, since this is named something other than Sonic Adventure 3, it's probably a new concept which will likely be terrible. You can always hope though that they decided to fire all of the less mentally capable staff brought on after Sonic Adventure 2.

  • @ajacy: Exactly

  • @RRRansom: The Sonic RPG is called the dark brotherhood I think.

  • @Samos42: After all the shitty games you'd actually think they learn that the games they make are terrible? They just want some quick money.

  • I think that, after the Dreamcast failed, Sonic Team stopped caring anymore.

  • isn't the sonic rpg on ds?

  • [en.wikipedia.org]
    the sonic rpg.

  • Hopefully we'll see Sonic Unleashed of the now largely hopeless Sonic Team.

  • WARNING

this is going to be bloated, but bear with me, i think i have some good points.

first of all.. sonic rush adventure was great, better than the first rush. not only did i think the music had a bit of that "pizazz" (basically a hook that you look forward to in each song) that 16 bit sonic soundtracks had, the levels were actually well designed, filled with beautiful scenery, and had memorable gimmicks. basically what sonic stages should be about. the biggest improvement though? stages that were easy to get through without falling into a pit while blazing through the stage. i think dimps nailed it with that game.

ive thought about what they could do to revive sonic, and really.. only a couple things come to mind that could be okay. since the public seems to accept 2.5D, that could very well be a solution. as i was playing the new pork stage in brawl, i thought of how dope it would be for a 2.5D game on 360/ps3 with backgrounds made so beautiful that you would be pushing the consoles to their limits. another thing would be to basically take this commercial and turn it into a game.

krytha pretty much nailed it, sonic needs to be patterned after a racing game when put in 3d. the levels need to be like tracks, and sonic needs to control similar to a car. hold a button to go forward, and another button to break/reverse. down curls him into a ball, and up jumps. i think most of sonics 3d games had too much exploration and focused too much on levels that had sonic moving too slowly.

i really think sonic in 3d could work. besides shadow the hedgehoge and sonic 2006, the other 4 games made advancements that were actually pretty good ideas, just poorly implemented. sonic adventures 1 and 2 had fun, classic feeling stages as sonic, but everyone elses gameplay sucked. sonic and the secret rings almost went along the lines of what i was saying about sonic being on rails, but the controls were TERRIBLE. having to steer him with the remote was a bad idea, not being able to just stop and turn around was just stupid, and having to hold a button down to jump.. ignorant. sonic heroes was the closest to a true 3d sonic in my book. if you only played as sonic, knuckles, or tails (not as a team) and had access to different locations in the stages (tails access higher areas through flight, knuckles through strength, and sonic reaching things only because he could run fast enough to get to them) and used the other characters as support, that game would have been pretty solid.

im afraid if sega releases yet ANOTHER mediocre sonic... the older crowd may ignore anything else.. even if its a "sonic galaxy." in closing, if they could pull off a super team of yuji naka and prope to create the engine, hirokazu yasuhara and naughty dog to do the level design, and naoto oshima and artoon to animate the characters and develop the final product.. i think that could be something amazing

apologies to my book length comment.. i just cant help but go off on sonic.

  • This could either be the best Sonic game made in a long time, or it could be the worst Sonic game ever.

  • At least this Sonic appearance would automatically be a step up from his inclusion in Brawl.

  • @gusiskirby: Isn't every new Sonic game released considered the worst Sonic game of all time?

  • Hey, SECRET RINGS WAS NOT THAT BAD AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES DIES FROM SPOON WOUNDS. THOUGH IT'S OKAY TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE MULTIPLAYER.

Let's damn hope they get it RIGHT this time!

  • Sonic Unleashed? Does he have Force powers now?

  • Where the heck can I look up patents and trademarks? I wanna make some of these discoveries!

  • Just when you thought Sonic couldn't get more extreme, he gets UNLEASHED! Getting a Metacritic average of 3 on your Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 home gaming consoles SOON!

  • @Mr.SithNinja: They tried that. It didn't work so well.

  • Oh, I can almost feel it.......It might just be................Nope, sorry Sega. No excitement from this once-avid Sega fan. ( ;_; )

  • I still can't help but get a little excited hoping that a Sonic game could be good again. Personally I would love a HD version of Sonics 1-2 with a bit of Knuckles thrown in.

  • I'd really like a new Sonic that felt like Sonic Adventure 2, just with the kinks worked out. That game really was a lot of fun to play just flying through the levels as sonic/shadow.

The real problem was all the different characters you had to play as to get through the game. The knuckles levels were ok too, but really messed with the overall flow of he game, really being a different type of game all together.

@shouryuuken: If they could actually make the next sonic game work the way you suggested, it could possibly be a revival of the Sonic franchise.

  • I really really hope Sega can bring back Sonic. Using him in Brawl brought back years of nostalgia. Sonic 3 was really the first game I ever got into as a kid, and it's sad to see mediocre Sonic games nowadays.

Sonic Rush and its sequel were great, but I'm scared that the series is too far gone.

  • @Delano_J:

I had a very similar experience with Sonic Heroes. I got it full price, and hated it. Ever since then I never buy a game day 1 without looking at a few reviews.

  • @shouryuuken:
"krytha pretty much nailed it, sonic needs to be patterned after a racing game when put in 3d. the levels need to be like tracks, and sonic needs to control similar to a car. hold a button to go forward, and another button to break/reverse. down curls him into a ball, and up jumps."

Uhh...dude, it's called Sonic & the Secret Rings and it was the best damn Sonic game since Sonic CD (unless you're one of those people who thinks Adventure is a good game). Does exactly what you described, for the most part.
People just didn't stick with it long enough because Sega apparently thought it was a smart idea to gimp the controls at the beginning of the game, thus making the player upgrade them to do what you want as you progress.

    Oh Sega!

Anyway, my gut tells me this is probably a Secret Rings-esque game for the Wii. S&tSR sold about 800,000 copies so far (compared with about 50,000 combined for the shitty PS360 version), so you just know a sequel is coming.

  • I wonder how many Sonic games Sega will make until they can afford to create Dreamcast 2.

  • The Sonic series just needs to go back to its roots. Do a Sonic 4 for the DS and make it like the original Sonic games. Side-scrolling, definitely. Fresh remakes of zones from S1-S&K? Definitely. Heck, throw in Tails and Knuckles as playable.

For the Wii, Sonic needs something more suited to a console. I can see Sonic Xtreme reimagined and put on the Wii, and Sonic Unleashed as a title would actually fit this one. It was to have gravity flips (to all four sides of a 3D stage - think a square tunnel and being able to drive on the walls, ceiling, and floor), some cool zones, and some interesting characters. The Wii Remote really could do the former. Oh yeah!

Better yet, Nintendo should buy Sega Sammy and sell off the Sammy part. That would revitalize the Sonic series (Sega's last candle) and Nintendo too.
