Remember when Hollywood blamed Halo 3 for why they made crappy movies had low box office revenues? Now one analyst is predicting that Grand Theft Auto IV could cause such an effect. Arriving in stores on April 29th, the upcoming planned-blockbuster Iron Man hits theaters just days later on May 2nd and shares GTA's young male demographic audience.
Sure, you may argue that gamers could just see the movie later and Iron Man will still make plenty of money. But studios get higher cuts of ticket sales near a movie's launch, making the loss of Hollywood profits from gaming entities potentially quite real. Will you stay in on Iron Man weekend to play GTAIV?
GTA IV May Carjack Iron Man Ticket Sales [Next Generation]

Iron Man is a necessity.
GTA can wait three hours while I'm out.
I most certainly will be playing GTA IV that weekend. No way would I pass that up so that I could go and see Iron Man.
Iron Man > GTA
Yes, but only because I wasn't going Iron Man anyway...
No I think I can play GTA 4 and then take a 2hr break to watch the red and gold jetting around. Honestly Hollywood, give us all a break. If your movie bombs its not just because we're playing videogames. Its because your movie blows and we RATHER be playing videogames than having to watch it. Solution? Stop making crappy movies. {gasp!}
If Iron Man turns out to be an awesome movie, then people will go see it regardless, i know that I would. Let's just say let Hollywood stick to their business, and us gamers will stick to our own.
This won't affect me one bit. I'm still going to go see Iron Man. And I don't even know anything about it, as I'm a non-comic book buff. I just think putting Robert Downey Jr. in it was brilliant; I love his acting.
It will, however, be my only venture out into daylight that weekend. After the movie I'll race home, back into my GTA-induced coma.
You folks can't take a 3 hour break from GTAIV to go see another crappy Hollywood flick? I don't get how it has to be one or another.
I'll most likely watch it the following weekend.
I'm one of the few who isn't actually a big fan of GTA, and am looking very forward to Iron Man, so I'll definately be seeing that one.
i dont know if id consider gta that entralling where it can keep from going to the movies. also, come on. how can you say no to that face? whos a cute little alcoholic super hero? you are! yes you are! yes you are!
Iron Man looks exciting, GTA IV will be good for sure. I'm sure I can take a break and do both in one weekend.
You telling me after playing GTA for 2 or 3 days straight, you cant take 2 hours off to go see iron man? Now if your talking about the iron man game, that may run into some problems, but i'll still play, just when im done with GTA
Considering the Iron Man movie looks fucking awesome, no. Especially since I've never liked GTA before now, so even though the changes sound great I don't mind waiting for it.
High ticket prices have me ignoring movies until DVD release. This won't be any different.
Iron man all the way
Sorry to be completely noobing it up, but what is Iron Man?
When GTAIV is out I plan to lock my door, close my curtains, and live off cereal for a week. Once the need for food gets too large I might leave - in which case Ironman will be the first place I go...
@7ucky: dick! you left out the word "to"!
@Shanesan: Oooooooooooh. ~That~ Iron Man. The picture took a while to load.
Eh. The Speical Effects look good. I might blow my dollar movie night offer on it.
Yeah I'm not interested in GTAIV and I am interested in Iron Man, so I will be seeing the movie that weekend and not playing GTA :)
This is making me think the movie might not be so good. If they are already thinking of reasons to say why it didn't do well.
IRON MAN
Not looking forward to the game nor the movie to be honest, so I will be sitting around doing whatever.
I'm not seeing Iron Man or buying GTA, lol
Iron Man for sure. If the old GTA games are anything to go by, I'll be done with a majority of the main story line after a few days, and i have been stoked about iron man since i saw the trailer at comic con last year.
uhhhh....yeah. iron man? another shitty comic movie? whatever.
I doubt it but its kind of funny that this topic came up, my co-workers and I are convinced that once the game comes out the world will at a stand still for a few days. lol
Dude, Iron Man looks badass. I can stop playing GTA for a few hours to go see it. I think I'll be ok. :D
Robert Downey JR. is an amazing actor and I will most likely go see it opening weekend, despite the addictive drug known as GTA.
Neither one, since I don't go out to the movies and I don't have a PS3/360. I am currently playing Vice City Stories, which I am enjoying, but I will need to wait on the latest GTA. The only movies I have gone to the theatre to see in the last 4 years were Batman Begins, 300, and Beowulf in 3D, with Batman being the only one that I loved. I may end up seeing Indiana Jones or Batman in theatres this year, but nothing else. I almost always prefer watching something on my home theatre.
So, if anything is keeping me from seeing Iron Man on opening day it would be:
1. Awful audiences
2. The smell and sound of people eating popcorn (I love it, but hate being around it)
3. Terrible ticket prices
4. Cell phones
5. Sticky floors
6. The fact that it is not my home
Iron Man will be unaffected by any game's release. The movie will do well or not, but if it doesn't it won't be because people are zombified in front of their TV's playing a game. This is a true non-issue, it seems to me.
I personally can take a 3 hour break from the vidya for a movie with a character I fucking hate the dickens out of.
Fuck you Tony, it's your fault Cappy is dead.
@jfx316: oh, ok, like you're gonna sleep on batman this summer.
i dont get it; cant people do both? you pause for like 2 hours, or just save. i dont see these in direct competition.
anyway, Civil-War-Uncle-Tom-fucking-sellout or not, Iron Man alla way. Downey Jr looks spot-on for the role, and im still holding out hope for Fing-Fang-Foom in purple pants.
Going to see the movie regardless of the game that is out. Its three hours away from the machine, for crying out loud, big deal.
tell you what though....when Batman- The Dark Knight is released I'm dropping everything to drive 50 miles to an IMAX and pay 12 bucks for a ticket.
I doubt it. When Halo 3 released no big Hollywood movie was coming out. Movies still bring in way more customers than video games.
Halo 3 sold something like 8 million copies. With movie tickets at 10 a pop a movie that makes $100,000,000 sells out to 10,000,000 people and if you do the math a movie that makes more money sells out to even more people.
The movie business will always be more profitable and get more people than the game industry not to mention the top movie studios are 10xs richer than the top game studios.
I do beleive GTA 4 will more than likely murder Halo 3 in sales but I doubt it'll hurt Iron Mans release.
Probably. Since I don't see movies alone I will only go if my friends decide to go. Chances are they will be playing GTA as well.
Neither interests me. How's that for breaking the poll?
13 bucks for 2 hours of entertainment.
60 bucks for 100.
hmm.
Both, but GTA will probably be taking a back seat to Mario Kart anyway...
home theater is the way to go, much rather watch this movie at home.
So Yes, I'll be staying in that weekend.
GTA4 is probably last on my list of things to do after hell freezes over. Screw R* and their crappy games with bland, boring gameplay and crappiest-real-effort-on-their-respective-system graphics. Media will hype it to hell though like the R* puppets they are and everyone will buy it for the "ooh, I just killed a hooker" feeling. It'll sell extremely well and I'll have to put up with the hype for even more half thought out, poorly made games that are "cool and mature" enough to sell millions regardless.
Iron man I'll probably see the week after opening weekend. Man I hate the crowds at comic book movies' opening weekends...
Well, Iron man comes out on my birthday so I imagine I will be forced to drag myself away and sit in a theater. I don't mind, it looks like it'll be awesome. This is all a tempest in a teacup as far as I'm concerned, as what I'm really waiting for is Mercenaries 2. Oooohhh yeah....
I will definitely be seeing Iron Man. Don't really care that much for GTIV
I do not find a problem tearing my self away from GTA's gripping story and gameplay of "pick up X and take it to Y". Course, then after iron man its time to go play gta, and see how much stuff I can explode while I'm still drunk form seeing iron man. God I love Movie Tavern. (Liquor + Food + Movie) - (Children/Teenager) = excellent.
Ironman looks like a piece of crap, so I probably won't be seeing it either way. I was so dissapointed seeing the trailer becuase Robert Downey Jr. usually does such good stuff.
Iron Man, Indiana Jones, The Hulk, Wall-E, Hellboy 2, The Dark Knight, X-Files 2 -- There's a TON of movies I'll see instead of playing GTA4 this summer.
The game(s) can wait.
Well, I'm not leaving the fucking house for a while when GTAIV comes out... I even have a bucket prepared for shit & piss so I can stay close to the T.V.
@wef: where are you paying $13 at? that's harsh.
@ManjiKengo: haha, another comic fan, god bless you man.
and yeah, it is Stark's fault, im with Hawkeye on that one! i just...man, i hope they dont wuss out and make tony a @#$%in skrull.
R.I.P., Steve.
@majiesto: You my good sir don't even deserve to use the word man in sentences.
Anyway, what's Iron man?
In a word: NO!
I've been waiting for an Iron Man movie for some time and it looks sweet. GTA can sit quietly at home for a few hours. Besides my PS3 will prolly need a break at that point :)
I hate going to the movies, and even when I do, I never, ever go and see anything on the opening weekend (way too many obnoxious kids).
Plus I'll probably see Iron Man weeks before GTA is out. *whistles*
@ManjiKengo: agreed, i'll be driving about 100 miles
Who's spending money on both the day they come out?
THIS GUY
The Iron Man movie will do more harm to itself than any game will ever do.
Are you kidding me, an alcoholic genius/womanizer/billionaire who wears a flying suit that launches tank-destroying missiles on legendary Black Sabbath music played by an alcoholic womanizer/coked out/genius/actor? I wouldn't miss that for anything in the world.
And for those who don't know Iron Man... I mean come on, he's been one of the main character of Marvel for years, founding member of the Avengers (Spider-Man, Cap. America, Ant Man, The Hulk and I'm probably forgetting a few others).
And I know a trailer doesn't make a movie but still, this has to be one of the greatest trailers I've seen in years (I admit that the trailer for S-M3 looked great and that the movie sucked but still).

I'm probably gonna get GTA 4 AND see Iron Man that week.
@GMR2008: 2007 Video Game sales < 2007 Movie theater receipts. Average movie costs: ~60 million. Average ~$10-$15 million. Trending: Video games (increasing yearly), Movies (plateaued with some variance).
I think your wrong about the assertion movies are generally more profitable. DVD sales still tip it, but VG is eating away at many peoples entertainment budget. DVD, CD, live Music, Movies etc.. are competing with video games for time and money and video games are holding their own.
this is a ridiculous argument. what are they doing? crying that they cant siphon money from the poorer kids who cant do both and understand that the kids may be steered towards the entertainment dollar per hour value games have over a movie and that the gta franchise definitely has a proven track record for the awesome while their marvel movies are hit or miss and...
what is their point?
oh im sorry ... rediculos* and definately*
Like all films these days, I'll wait for the DVD. Games simply offer far more entertainment than films can, and Hollywood is going to have to accept that. The music industry is losing money not to piracy, but to games. The same is now happening to films, they're just going to have to get used to the fact that nowadays they're not the biggest entertainment industry in the world.
personally unless movie is absolutely awesome (Dark Knight), i wait till movie shows up on second rate dollar theaters...
if Hollywood execs put some effort into making great movies and licensing great stories as much as they complain, then they have nothing to worry about...
go do your job instead of whining like a little bitch...
Not planning on getting gta, and undecided on Iron Man as well so... I guess it really isn't applicable.
