How Brutal Legend Fighting Works

We'd never question the brilliance of Tim Schafer and Double Fine's upcoming action/rockventure title Brütal Legend. But we were...curious, that's all...about how the game would actually play. PSX Extreme explains:

The battle axe is Eddie's primary attack, and it works much like Devil May Cry's sword attack does - basic, yet effective. Riggs will shred on the guitar when he needs to cast various types of magic, and performing these magic attacks will require timed combo entry on your controller.
Magic attacks include fun like literal "face melting" solos. Hmm...maybe it's all the Rock Band brainwashing, but all this button mashing music creation combat sounds pretty fantastic.

  • If the combos are rhythm based (similar to say, Pata-pon), but with metal, then sign me right up.

    Hooray for umlauts!

  • This is going to be the best game ever made.

  • I totally can't wait for this game, although I am a little nervous that Jack Black's presence in the game may stifle the Tim Schafer style comedy from shining through. Nevertheless, they earned a free pass from me due to the brilliance that was Psychonauts.

  • @Dauragon C. Mikado: Truer words could never be spoken.

  • do not doubt tim schafer you heathens

  • This is my most anticipated game full stop. I'm sure the gameplay might well be a bit lacking but the writing and humour will be top notch!

  • Battle Axes are a refreshing alternative. Hasn't been a good battle-axe game since Golden Axe... hehe

@Darth Navster: I think it'll work. Jack is funniest when portraying a musician, and Tim just plain owns.

@Darth Navster: Yeah thats my only hesitation about this game as well. I don't doubt Tim Schafer, Psychonauts is the best platformer of the last 10 years quite easily (Hon Mention: New SMB), but I really, really don't care for Jack Black. If its going to end up as just him reading the lines Tim gives him without any of his own "wit" mixed in I'm sure it will be fine, but we'll see.

  • I love how magic will be used. I can picture casting a huge fireball while playing Poison's Every Rose Has Its Thorn :)

  • This is one game where I'm so sure the writing and music will be awesome that I really am not all that concerned how it plays. I trust Tim Schafer, this will be awesome. I mean its got Dio in it for crying out loud.

  • Team up Tim/Veryfine, Jack Black, and a ref. to RB and bingo-bango!...and you've got brillance!! Sigh...I'm very interested in this game, but why do I get the feeling that this will get much more love than other button mashing favs of mine. No offense to Mark (maybe he likes button mashers like myself), but what makes that play mechanic diff than Conan, Beowulf, KUF:COD, and Dynasty Warr....what is normally descibed as tired or uninspired in certain games (see the above list), but with something like this (or insert DMC4 or GoW)....GET READY FOR THA PHATITUDE!!! HELLZ YEAH!!

  • if it has the level of humor, storyline and level design that psychonauts had, then this will be one "hell" of a game (hyuk yuk).

  • what would be sweet is if you could play this game with a rockband or guitar hero guitar!

... or at least, you could have a controller hooked up at the same time, so you play with a controller, but then you switch to the guitar whenever you want to instantly start some "magic" attacks.

...okay, maybe its not the GREATEST idea, but still...

seriously, i cannnnnnnot wait for this game though. its going to be sooo rad.. i hope it goes the way of frank miller, and doesn't hold back on the mature content in the SLIGHTEST.

  • Release date? Pretty Please?? :D

  • You think Wiimote injuries are bad, just wait until someone gets backhanded with a guitar!
(Hey, it has the sensors for it...)

  • @DaiMacculate:
    I also loathe Jack Black.

  • I'm kind of with Tycho when he was talking about why he doesn't like Patapon. There's no room to be creative or to be interpretive with what you're doing in the game.

Beat'em'ups are pretty rigid, you can do any move you like, but it has to be done properly to get it off. That being said I'm actually okay with that becuase it's not about creativity so much as adaptability and knowing what move to use when.

The problem is that once you introduce music into the event it becomes a creative experience, meaning that I'm going to want to interpret the music the way I want (within reason, clearly, you don't see me complaining about the fact that you can't win at Guitar Hero by mashing whatever the hell you want whenever you want).

Assuming there's some room for freedom in the interpretation on the part of the player then I'll probably love this game.

  • The only way this game could get more awesome is if they announced Dethklok was in it. Highly unlikely, but that would totally kick ass as Tim Scafer and Brendan Small have a similar sense of humor and both obviously love the metal.

  • I have faith that Double Fine and Tim Schaffer will do something interesting and fun, but honestly this game sounds like a pretty boring/standard action game.

  • As long as they don't ruin it for me by putting qtes in.

  • What happen with the rumor that the game might utilize guitar controllers? Anything?

  • @Werrick: But how would you have creativity in a game like this? Play whatever the heck you want and something random happens? Computers don't understand creativity, they understand math.

The only I could think of to introduce creativity would be to have effects based on things like scale or beat. I'm not really into music, so forgive me if I'm screwing up the terms. But how would that affect the gameplay?

Your idea's not bad, but how would you do it if you could? I'm just curious, and I like to play around with ideas.

  • I can't wait for this game! The magic casting system sounds amazing.

  • @Tiber: Well, it would be possible, and I'm sure someone with more background on music than me will be able to say something with more sense.

However, I can see how it could work. You could have certain loose guidelines of what spells would be cast by what, and you could improvise (which could affect the spell) as long as you didn't really screw up, while recieving feedback from the game. If you moved towards more bass, you could get, say, a slow, powerful fireball, while higher tones would increase speed and decrease power, or something to that effect. Of course, a very, very easy baseline of a successful casting would be set, so that people without the musical creativity or skill could still play without being handicapped.

Basically, it's a very simplified version of the improvisational characteristics of Jazz.

  • @Grive: Erm, replied before time.
Of course, what I mentioned in my last post would be quite hard to program with enough depth (or so I believe, I could be wrong).

Still, a) It would be the most awesome musical game ever, and b) A man can dream right?

  • @joelface: While it hasn't been officially confirmed, OXM's rumor page reported that Brutal Legend will support the Guitar Hero controllers-- [www.gamestooge.com]

  • @Tiber:

I don't actually know, I haven't played the game, but for example, in Guitar Hero while you have to be pretty precise and you can't play anything other than the notes in question there's still a whammy bar you can play with, the game allows very slight delay or anticipatory note-strikes... it's not much at all, but it's there.

I'm thinking, maybe, the ability in a game like this to combine strings from different combos to get different sounds, maybe. I don't know, I'm just spit-balling here, but maybe a function like a whammy bar in this game as well.

I realy haven't thought about it in terms of specifics.

  • This can only end in awesome.

  • I love Psychonauts, Schafer, Jack Black, and the concept for this game, but the screens I have seen leave something to be desired.

  • Why all the Jack Black hate? I like him.

  • If this becomes another commercial failure like psychonauts then something's seriously wrong somewhere. Assuming that it will be good, which I do.

  • I still have some serious doubts about this game, what Tim Schafer is really good at is story, character and puzzles, not action based gameplay. The gameplay in Psychonauts was rather mediocre at best and with this even more action based, well, we have to wait and see.

  • @joelface: Not happening, there was a rumor from Xbox Magazine about guitar controller support in Brutal Legend, that is completely false, there is no plans nor is there any interest to implement guitar controller support in the game.

  • Graphics look like bum.

  • Oh hush the graphics look fine.

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 06:01 PM on 03/12/08 *

LOL! Oh Snap! They're using the NG2 engine!

  • @mindscienceofthemind:

in the end, it would probably just have been more of a hassle anyways.

  • I believe the Bible has written it is a sin to not have faith in Tim Schafer.

My unwavering belief in my macaroni statued-lord grants me an eternal pass to happiness.... with video games.

Beyond that, I still old out hope that guitar peripherals will be usable, most likely plugged into the second port, and you shall have it strapped to your back, until a time in which it is needed, you will (awesomely) whip it around to shred upon.

As usual, this game should be Totally Excellent.

  • @Therin: If it has some decent exposure it should do well, it has Jack Black and a lot of mainstream appeal.

  • You know what'd be kind of awesome though very cumbersome? If you could actually use a Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar controller to cast spells.

  • BRUTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't wait for this game!!!
