Take-Two Interactive announced today that BioShock 2 was officially in the works, under the development wing of the recently formed 2K Marin studio. The sequel—rumored to actually be a prequel—to the Xbox 360 and PC shooter is planned for a fourth-quarter fiscal 2009 release date. Take-Two's fiscal year ends October 31, so expect it to hit unspecified platforms (read: Xbox 360) before the '09 holidays.
Take-Two also noted that the original BioShock has 2 million unit sales under its belt since its August '07 release. No pressure, 2K Marin! No pressure at all.

Sounds good. I can't wait to see some screenshots :)
Oh please bring it to PS3!!!
Eww now I feel like a giddy 360 owners begging for MGS4.
No Ken Levine = :(
Ahem... Pardon me while I go freak out with joy.
@slomo788: **owner
Where's the PS3 Love? Come on Take Two.
I'm glad that we got such a good singleplayer game the first time around, but I think that it would be awesome to shoot lightning and bees at people in multiplayer.
I'm hoping for multiplayer this time.
Smiley face Smiley face Smiley face
Is there really more story that can be said in Rapture though?
Everything seems to be pretty much tied up by the end of the game, no? It was a self-contained world, for a self-contained story.
noice
Cool.
WOW! It's "officially!" in the works... how UNEXPECTED!
don't mean to beat a dead horse, but a multiplatform release would just warm the cockles in my heart
And there was much rejoicing!
Far f***ing out!!!!!!!
So is this being helmed by 2K Marin and not Boston?
Also, it better be a prequel.
Now would ALSO be a good time to announce a not-so-terrible-heck-maybe-even-good port of the original to the PS3.
Can anyone hear my crying?
nice. knew it was coming, but nice. i really can't wait for details on the game's setting.
BioShock? I think I've heard of it ...
Hmm, I wonder what possible pack-in they could include with this one that could possible approach the Big Daddy figure. Definitely can't wait for part 2, although I kind of hope it's a new setting/story ... unless, it's a prequel. There's is a lot of area to mine is the decline of Rapture.
Whoo! *waits patiently*
AKA Q2 2010
Now who is wondering if Levine is a part of it?
I'm just hoping for a bad ass story. Prequel sounds amazing to me.
@Lot krotan (wut?):
Yeah all the rumours might turn out to be true. I feel bad for Levine since Bioshock was his baby. Lets hope that the series is left in good hands. I would hate to see such a great game's legacy spoiled buy a lackluster sequel.
Hmm maybe I'll buy Bioshock now. Well that is after I buy Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Left 4 Dead.
Also: Taking bets on the storyline, anyone? I'm thinking prequel, with a parent trying to get their little girl back from becoming a sister...or something.
I thought Microsoft had exclusive rights to Bioshock 2? Perhaps there will be a ps3 version of Bioshock 3. (Really, now that there is a decent version of Unreal Engine for ps3 there is no other excuse)
Hey, if I've got to buy a damn PS3 for MGS4, you PS3 crybabbies can pony up some cash for a 360 - and enjoy a real online system while you're at it...
Ahmguhz!
I'm more nervous than excited. This seems like another Matrix-style situation, where the first installment is complete and utter brilliance, and then the creators can't just leave well enough alone and decide to cash in with sequels, thus killing the whole property.
I'm very intrigued, and it could be good, but the vast majority of cases like this one haven't turned out well...
I wish they would make a new system shock instead.
@Sonic_and_Tails: I was wondering the same, although I still have pretty high hopes for it whether or not Levine is part of the team.
I'm curious as to how the story's going to pan out...and hopefully it will end better than the first. Maybe regain some of the complexities of System Shock 2 that they left out in the original Bioshock? I can always hope.
My fingers are crossed for the reanimated corpse of Sander Cohen screaming incoherently about bunny ears.
@Foggynotion: Not sure whether Levine will be in charge of the next game but if he is then it'll be 2K Boston doing the work and not 2K Marin. As stated past rumors one idea was to set the next game at Rapture before all things went to hell.
I rather think they should just set it in a whole different place.
Talk about your unceremonious announcements.
@Bones_Jackson:
From talking to a lot of the 2k people, it seems like he would rather start another new IP than continue with bioshock.
Bioshock 2: Set in the future, only the part of the mastermind is now played by Shodan! We're calling it...
System Shock.
Ah right. I should get onto opening that shrink wrap on Bioshock.
Kudos on the SS franchise, Bioware hear our plea!.
While we are it, more info on Dragon Age please!
Am I allowed to be both excited and concerned? BioShock was amazing but where is the story going to go after this. I hope they made sure they had a great story for the world before greenlighting a sequel.
@QualityJeverage: Second Matrix is superior to the first one. I will defend this to the grave.
@Maiken: They cant make a new System Shock. EA owns the rights to that.
But yea Im worried here. This game minus Ken Levine isnt as intentionally promising.
How they intend to make this work - I simply cannot wrap my fucking head around. Pre-quel just isn't the way to go in my opinion, not with Bioshock.
hey thats my pic!
anyway I have very high hopes for this. I would love to learn more about what took place before Rapture fell to shit. I think that a lot can be done as long as no one tries to reinvent the game.
sigh why can 2k leave the masterpiece alone. I hope Levine is on board this, unless this is the project he wouldn't involved in. I hope he's doing system shock 3
Man I do love Bioshock, it's my second favorite game ever, but I really have my doubts. I also don't really feel like a prequel would do the original justice. I just really hope that they don't destroy the beautiful underwater city of Rapture that I have grown to love.
@Foggynotion: Yes, Marin. The Dev's from the original all left Boston (and Ken Levine) and opened a new branch. Apparently, Mr. Levine was quite bothersome during the making of the first one and everyone hated him.
I thought Ken Levine wasn't gonna do the next Bioshock, it probably won't take away from the gameplay but the story might suffer a bit.
PS3 Exclusive Confirmed!
;)
I think a prequel will actually be a metric fuckton better than the original, with or without Levine.
Consider the fact that the amazing story sold this game and is the only thing that they could fuck up. Graphics typically don't go backwards (DMC2 being a rare exception..). Sound, they know what works. A prequel, but a recent storylinewise prequel means that plasmids and guns should function the same, they can just make new plasmids. Controls don't need much if any tweaking. And the framework for the storyline is in place. Have this be an EPIC game starting as you as Joe Shmoe boarding a sub to go join the underwater community of Rapture, meet some of the people that were read about and listened to in BioShock's diaries. Above all, watch the gradual decline of civilization firsthand as an observer. Maybe the ending can tie in the first one's main character, but I think the only way they can really flub it up is by focusing on the first one too much, instead of making a standalone story.
I'm excited....they need to work on their storytelling a bit and improve/increase the plasmids...oh, and a lot less hacking, please.
How about System Shock 3? There's a sequel I'd like to see. Bioshock was good, but System Shock 2 > Bioshock.
The only topic of discussion here is gameplay. I'm interested to know how they plan to go about this one, especially since plasmids seemed kind of a Rapture thing, what with all the lore to back it up and all. Unless the pre-quel is also set within it, they need to be extremely cautious (even more so) with how they plan to implement the weapons here.
Great news. Can't wait to play it. I'll hope they'll bring it out for the PS3, but I won't hold my breath, I'll just wait for my roommate to get it.
@Islandkiwi: "and a lot less hacking, please."
Plumbing. I think you meant Plumbing.
They probably just misunderstood what made the Mario series so great. Good attempt though.
Goodness, is that really necessary? I thin I'd be happy with a directors cut that just ends after your encounter with Ryan.
