Street Fighter IV doesn't have a street date yet, but we're pretty sure of two things: 1). It will be released in arcades before on consoles. 2). It will be released in Japanese arcades before in Western arcades. We could be wrong! We're just guessing! But, just in case, we're dead right and just in case you can't wait, there's this: A pre-order for the Japanese arcade cabinet. It'll set you back around ¥2,394,000 yen (US$23,307). Pre-orders start this March, and it's expected to go on sale this August.
Eds Note: Capcom got in touch with us, letting us know that this is actually 2 pairs of dedicated head-to-head style Japanese cabinets (a total of four cabinets). So, it's only US$5,750. Much cheaper!

Best screenshot ever.
I'm standing ground for 59.99 ;-)
Yer i will tek 2 please.
Anyone wanna borrow me 23.5k?
the number 23 is a secret. I could wait for the ps3 version.
@dexterr: Ryu eyes are popping.
Does anybody know how much it takes to produce an arcade cabinet? Anyway, nothing matters anymore now that Brawl is out. Why do developers even make fighting games anymore? In fact, why do developers make games other than Smash Bros? Personally, I've cut eating and peeing out of my schedual in order to make more room for Brawl. That aside, this game looks cool, but I've never been enough of a Street Fighter fan to get excited about it.
@gamadaya:
wow..
just wow.
@gamadaya: Eating and sleeping are ok but you just cant let go of that Kotaku can you now :)
They need to release more games for arcades and bring back the scene. I had one arcade within a five mile radius of me, but has since moved to another, further location due to bad business. Ah fuck it, I hate leaving my house, too.
At 100Y a play (common price in Japan, which if you think about it is stupidly expensive), they'll get that money back in no time.
i have 5 machines in my house.
My friends never want to fucking leave.
Moral of the story
Activate The Coin Op function.
That must be the price for a high-end dedicated cabinet with a huge monitor on it. Granted, even kits are ridiculously expensive when they first come out, but for that much money you could buy five Stern pinball machines. The prices do also come down fairly qucikly after the stuff has been on the market for a while too (at least for the PCBs) but given the hardcore nature of fighting game fans these days, I suspect the vast majority of these will be staying in the arcades for quite a while.
@Lemming To The Sea: Well sure thing...hey wait, what's that .5 about? You think I'm a sucker? Here's 23,307 and not a penny more.
@gamadaya: I hope you have a very strong flame retardant suit. *Puts on flame retardant suit to protect from the flames that miss gamadaya*
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2:
No I still sleep. Can't go without sleep man. You can't play Brawl as well without sleep. But if you don't eat, that only makes you more hungry for victory. I guess I could be peeing now, since I'm not playing Brawl, but what if I feel like playing Brawl when I'm peeing? I'm shit out of luck then, and I can't take that risk.
@Kprimed:
What games?
@gamadaya: Shit i misread your post...
I could come up with a pee+Wii joke here but it would just seem wrong, so ill let someone else handle that.
@gamadaya:
Soul Caliber 2
Marvel Vs Capcom
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Street Fighter 2 turbo
Street Fighter Alpha 2
@Kprimed: With a setup like that, I can't blame them. Unfortunately, even without that setup, my friends still like to pester me for the library of fighters I have.
I don't mind though. It's not just games I'm letting them play, it's a history lesson.
@gamadaya:
that was one of the most offensively stupid comments i've read all year maybe....um, thanks.
better start saving.
@gamadaya: I'm so glad ban monday is tomorrow...
@gamadaya:
while ssbb is an OK game, it is no where near sf, guilty gear, soul calibur or any decent fighter. It's like calling mario kart a racing sim. brawl, to me, is not a real fighter. although it is fun for what it is.
@Kprimed: go to sleep, because I assume that you haven't slept since Brawl's midnight release.
@DigiMish:
will do
@gamadaya: I think Ill just ban you for now.
so say i was to lay down the 23k, would the machine even work over here in states? Would there be an electrical issue? + not knowing japanese might set me back too ;)
the machine would most definitely work, but If you're buying the cab and the PCB, you'll get KILLED on shipping.
just wait for the price to drop - arcade hardware has good gradual decline after a month or two, the price could be halfed in months... maybe.
@JackTretton: If you are serious you should click on the link and they got an email addy of the contact for international orders.
@JackTretton:
Although the voltage is slightly different (Japanese power is 100 volts, as opposed to 110 in the US), I've found that my Japanese Saturn works just fine on US power, and the plugs are similar so you don't even need an adapter. Arcade cabinets use switching power supplies anyway, so there would not be an issue.
that picks still kills me.
Let me go get my coin purse.
I have mine on order. Should rake in its purchase amount in under 4 months in the right location. Really looking forward to it. =)
As for some of the other questions; A new cabinet nowadays can be anywhere above $1000. Dedicated cabinets usually cost more, but plug and play JAMMA cabs can be found really cheap if you look in the right places.
While many of the newer cabinets do indeed depreciate in value reasonably quickly, the classics (Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, F-Zero AX, etc) often appreciate in value. Even if you don't want to run an arcade, they're a worthwhile investment for some.
/Still can't wait for my SF IV and Raiden IV to be delivered.
if this bad boy is gonna cost 23 grand, then the console release must be months and months... and months away.
What business is gonna shell out that amuont of money for a machine that everyone can buy for their home console in five minutes? The releases must be staggered quite far apart. to justify it.
Maybe i'm missing something - did this logic apply to VF5? The more i think about it, the less sure i am about it. Anyone got any answers? (i know google is my friend, as is wiki, but i feel like asking some kotakuites for their answers)
What board is it using and how the hell can it cost 23k? This thing better come with a 70+ inch HD LCD and steel frame otherwise people are just buying a game for 23k. Its almost financial suicide for an arcade to pay that much in this day and age.
Japanese arcades will, since Japanese houses tend to be too cramped for home playing in-person, and on-line play hasn't taken off. There's also an intrinsic value in arcades for Japan that doesn't exist for the US anymore due to incompetent arcade owners.
That might be a good investment for my bar. Just hope tons of people will pay 30 bucks a game. Then maybe I could get all that 23K back. lol
@arstal: Arcades are dying in Japan as well. Pachinko/pachi-slot parlors are releasing more low-price slots, sort of like the penny slots you see in casinos... Medal games are one of the main sources of revenues for arcades, and this scheme is sucking them up dry from what I hear.
Online gaming can, and probably will, take off in the near future in Japan considering how easy it is to get fiber-optics internet access there. While we're struggling with our pitiful Comcast $50 internet connections that's dead 30% of the time they're paying $20-30 for something like 10mbps download/10mbps upload. I keep seeing people bitching about lag in CoD and such playing from Japan against US opponents, but it's pretty obvious they're just not used to it -- unless both ends have really shitty lines, it's no worse than those times in the 90's where you had to use POTS to connect to 300-400 ping servers.
23,000 kotaku users put in $1 and we'll buy a machine...although, we'll keep it at my house, cause i'll keep it safe :P
I ordered from Tops Game and they are priced double over what any distributor in HK or Japan charges.
Expect a more realistic price of $12,000
Damn! I only have $22,000
:(
I guess I'll just have to save my money and buy 366 copies of it for $60 a pop when it hits the 360.
:)
Do want, but I'll wait for the console version, then maybe make a stand up arcade that can house the console.
Is this with Lcd screen ? And Single or double cabinet?
I'd... rather buy a car?
umm all I can say is
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYUM!!!!
Get a console, have a cabinet made, or do it yourself, and put in a 20-30 inch LCD and your still under $5k
that wows me more when I think that this price doesn't include taxes!!!
That wows me more when I think that this price doesn't include taxes.
@Lemming To The Sea: You would be borrowing. They would be lending.
THE MORE YOU KNOW
@r1nce: May I ask where you will be setting up the cabinet?
That price is absolutely ridiculous.
Consider some of the really good moneymakers in the music gaming category (pretty much the easiest way besides redemption to hit big at an arcade):
DDR Supernova(2): From Betson, roughly 15,000. Granted, their cabinet design is not much removed from the original, it uses cheap parts. Now, 15k is really expensive considering . . .
Pump It Up NX2: An 'FX' cabinet sporting a big plasma screen and revamped speaker system will run you around ELEVEN thousand dollars. Top that off with the best quality platform on any arcade dancing game, and it's a wonder why places still bother with DDR. If you go with the 'GX' model (now discontinued because of monitor problems), you got the same pad, a DDR-esque cabinet, but better sound and a bigger, sharper screen for only about $8,000.
beatmaniaIIDX: The mother of all music games. Huge widescreen monitor (variety of flavors, preferrably CRT for timing). Bose speaker system. Rumbling bass platform that you stand on. LED marquee for in-game messages. Really, the greatest experience you will ever have playing a music game. Last I checked, $20,000.
So I'm really, really, really baffled why a fighting game wants to cost $23,000. Especially compared to hi-tech, specialized music games that already make tons of cash.
If it keeps that price tag for the US release, it's not going very far.
@yashichi8bit: A major train station. =)
Ok, that updated changed things from "you have got to be fucking kidding me" to "every arcade NEEDS to buy this."
