Subject: Wacom tablets are kinda sexy as far as peripherals go
So I've got one of those tightly-wound, high-stress personalites, the kind that's constantly worried and/or in a state of panic about something. One of the upsides of this is that I find repetitive, low-stress tasks (writing footnotes, cross-stitching, Harvest Moon) really soothing, which means I also think organizing things is great fun (a bonus in a field where you acquire astonishing amounts of paper, books, and notes on a near-daily basis). This year, I've been trying to organize my academic life: I've finally started taking class notes on my laptop, use a nifty program called DEVONthink that organizes everything without me having to do much, and my boyfriend just got me a little Wacom tablet so I can take notes on books while reading without having to transfer them to digital versions later. It's currently sitting on my coffee table, practically begging me to take notes on it. I just want to pet it — it's so cute and wee and slim! Now I have to get started making a padded case for it, since it'll be traveling to archives and libraries with me.
It was a slow weekend around here, but here's some stuff you might have missed:
Blueberry Garden looks like a bizarre, yet intriguing, upcoming indie release;
SSBB isn't playing nicely with some Wiis;
The crocheted version of our own Witzbold is available on eBay;
In more shocking news, 'X-Box Live' lies to parents about nude pictures.
I'm off to pon-pon-pata-pon my way through some more of Patapon (See? There I go with the low-stress repetitive tasks again) and get some reading done. Hope y'all have a good week.

Wow, a wacom tablet. Thats the best of the best! I'm guessing you might have the Graphire? I have an Intous Wacom Tablet for all of my drawing and doodling and what not. Your's should last you quite a while.
I'm a laid back very relaxed type person, so repetitive low stress things cause my mind to stop working.
When the EMP strike occurs, we're all up the creek...tech-addicted species that we are.
Hand crafting a padded case from scratch? You must really enjoy that stuff.
>_> Patapon stresses me out plenty.
DEFENSE... NO RETREAT... ARGH! ATTACK!
I still find it difficult to understand what Devonthink is and what good it is for me.
Also, intuos is great, but if you just use it for taking notes, you might just get bamboo instead (it sounds that you indeed got bamboo instead because of the word 'cute"). But if this tablet thing plays a major part in your effort of streamlining stuff, get cintiq.
It's difficult for me to go back to intuos now.
My Wacom tablet that worked perfectly with XP has some issues with Vista. It look a lot of pressure sensitivity tweaking and driver downloads to make the pen not draw at full pressure while only hovering. It's still not 100% but it's good enough.
Just wanted to say great stuff this weekend Maggie. Your doing well on your own. I wish I was more organized, but man i can't do it. Maybe with time, with time!
I'm with you on the tight wound/high stress personality. Organizing and cleaning are two of my favorite activities to do, and I have a feeling that putting this gundam model together will be fun also, just because it keeps me concentrated on one task~ nice and simple things to relax.
I'm hoping to get a tablet of my own one day, mainly since i do enjoy sketching. Never thought of using it for notes..
Wacom is the gold standard for tablets... Heck, I think it's the ONLY standard. I own a Graphire4 and it is absolutely amazing. I use it to draw whenever I'm in the artsy mood. Seriously miss taking hardcore illustration classes though. Who would have thoguht I'd go 180?
@Playstation: For me, I use it to keep my masses of PDFs, notes, book reviews, bibliographies, papers, etc. organized and in one place. It's really helped me; but I think the useful AI features only kick in once you've got quite the library amassed & have the right sorts of categories. Actually, just being able to convert all my PDFs to searchable text with the OCR & instantly dig up what I'm looking for was worth the purchase price. I heart DEVONthink.
I do indeed have a Bamboo. No reason to get one of 'serious' tablets, since I'm literally just taking notes with the thing!
@ggodo: Now those are words I can agree with. Maybe I need more caffeine.
Patapon? Low stress?
Are you insane. I got to the Water Miracle in the desert today (Taking it slow, lah de dah, w/e), and I wanted to throw my PsP out the car window after literally an hour of failing to summon the rain, at the absolute very end.
That game had to have doubled my blood pressure.
I've never used DEVONthink, but I can attest to the extreme usefulness of the Evernote software that comes with the Wacom tablets. It's pretty amazing for research projects.
Why must you taunt me and my lack of a PSP? If what our AP said is true and we actually do get a bonus on our next check, I may run out and buy me one of them PSPs.
Hah, I've got that kind of personality as well, and it's too bad I'm not one of those pro-active fellas. Is it me or is this the first time Maggie writes a Weekend Note? If so, I liked it!
Speaking of indie: GO WATCH LAKE TAHOE!!!! Especially if you liked Duck Season. Same director: Fernando Eimbcke.
Sorry, but I just saw it and loved it.
Slow news maybe because its the weekend and people hate Monday's.
I use my Wacom for FPS gaming, since recovering from an RSI -- I'll draw your ass to death!
Nice work this weekend Maggie.
Wacom is truly the best. I love the Intuos3 Special Edition 9x12 tablet I got back in October 07. Nine kinds of *uNF!* Oh, and it gets the work done, too. ;o
I envy you. I try to calm myself using repetitive tasks, but I usually can't. I can't keep myself from worrying about future problems. It's sort of good though. I see a lot of problems coming a long way off.
@gamadaya: I'd go around the bend if it weren't for my repetitive task hobbies (love making bread for this reason). Worrying is a double edged sword for me - really keeps me stressed to unacceptable limits frequently, but is always pushing me to be better since I'm terrified of disappointing people and myself, falling flat on my face, etc.
How about a Modbook?
I'm getting a Wacom Cintiq next month :)
My excitement is palpable and sketchable.
@Bluecell: Wow, really? I'm curious as to how old your tablet is then. I own a really old Graphire2, and it's worked perfectly on Vista. I didn't have any hassle getting it to work properly at all, other than installing a single driver.
That being said, Wacom tablets are sexy as hell. I'm very content with mine.
@Maggie Greene: :)
Oh I see, the site does say that. But I guess I just didn't quite understand the true value of Devonthink. Because at first I thought if I just wanted to make archieve of my docs, why not just putting them all in one folder and organize them. But I guess now I kind of understand it.
You're right Bamboo is the best solution for you. I forgot that cintiq isn't portable at all. Very hassle to set up. Maybe the next generation is more streamlined :)
@Playstation: The point of Devonthink is a very comprehensive, tied in database - e.g., I can basically have a wiki going with my notes and such, plus organizational capabilities that I can't do with a simple folder set up (also provides for quick searching and the like). Something a simple folder won't give you. :) Not the solution for everyone, but a very useful one for me.
