Please proceed no further unless you acknowledge that what you're about to read is a rumor. Good? Alright. Trusted Reviews, a site known more for technology write-ups than gaming news, is reporting that they have absolute certainty Microsoft will be replacing the 20GB Xbox 360 with a 60GB version. They are urging readers to not purchase a new 20GB model, but wait for the unspecified, near future when the new SKU will hit shelves. Our thoughts?
From a logic standpoint, given that larger hard drives aren't that expensive and 20GB is a bit light for all of Microsoft's multimedia offerings, a 60GB SKU could be more appealing to consumers while recouping value for Microsoft in downloads like Xbox Originals, movies and general DLC.
Also of note, 60GB is exactly half of the Elite's 120GB hard drive. That makes for a pretty sweet marketing tier if I've ever seen one.
But for now, it's just a rumor.
EXCLUSIVE: 60GB Xbox WILL Replace 20GB Model [trustedreviews]

Hrm... I wonder why they're going for a larger HD.
Oh wait, downloading movies.
Hmm, if true, this may be the model I get. Hope it's the sturdiest of the bunch, also.
Geeze, M$ and Sony need to do better next gen. Make one offer that will satisfy consumers, and stick with it. This multiple sku garbage is really keeping a lot of more casual consumers from the market, and stuffing Nintendo's coffers fatter.
I wonder how much the standalone HD will cost?
/menacingly fondles BestBuy replacement plan
I'm currently using the 120GB HDD.
Right now I got 70GB of videos stored on it with the Game section just 1GB (all DLC deleted from older games).
Anything larger than a 20GB isn't needed if you don't d/l videos or play every game with every piece of content.
and I hear the migration is a snap!
Well, if this happens, Microsoft better drop the price on the 120GB hard drive, or put out the 60 as a standalone for a price UNDER $150 fucking dollars.
I've been stuck with a 20GB drive for God knows how long, and it has next to no space left on it because Microsoft prices their proprietary hardware WAY too high.
I would like to see a 60 GB standalone drive because my 20 GB HDD is filling up quick and the 120 is out of my price range right now
A bigger hard drive is nice, integrated wifi would be much nicer! Stupid $100 adapter grumble grumble.
Xbox 360 greater then pro but not as elite bundle.
Multiple skus ftw!
Attack the high and low end of the market.
Sony should've released a 20, 60, and 120 gig PS3 for 399,499,599. But that's the past. The future is the 256gig SSD PSbox980, backward compatible with the PS4 and Xbox 735 games.
This is good. 20GB is really light. I don't even download that much, and I'm getting tight on space.
who the hell is trustedreviews? never heard of them before.
kinda like the company thats trying to trademark pwnage/w.e, never heard of them until then. oh well free advertising for them.
Just got a 60GB PS3 so I might trade in my old 20GB 360 if this rumored 60Gb one arrives in the UK...
..now all I need is for my Dreamcast to be delivered from eBay and my collection of all the consoles will be complete :D
@Magic Emperor Anima:
If you get it, and don't get Lost Odyssey with it first thing, you know I'll totally hunt ya down, right? :O
maybey should replace the arcade with the 20gb and have the 60gb as the middle sku?
I can't believe some of you are complaining about the price of a 120 gig HD.
@Archaotic: Buy one from Best Buy and replaces with beans (of your choice). Problem solved :)
It never made sense to me that they ever sold a console 1. without a HD, and 2. with only 20GB on the other model at launch.
There idea the whole time was for the 360 to become part of a "home entertainment experience"... with high-def downloads, on demand rentals, and integration with Windows 20 GB was never enough.
Although I do find the RROD to be not-so-entertaining in my own home theater experiences... hopefully my third replacement is a charm.
Great move if it comes with a price cut and/or an improved hardware platform. Otherwise I'm underwhelmed.
I would love a bigger HD if they weren't so overpriced.
"Also of note, 60GB is exactly half of the Elite's 120GB hard drive. That makes for a pretty sweet marketing tier if I've ever seen one."
But 20 is 1/6 of 120. There isn't a sexier marketing ploy than sixths.
20 gb for the Arcade is my bet. And that will be renamed. And it will come with a new game, so it will be called that.
At the Wiis price too.
And price drops for the others.
Enough rumours for you? They'ree gonna be right, promise...
Get ready....
... to be underwhelmed.
@hungry_for_worms: Well they are trusted. I mean it's right in the title.
This must be true.
@Archaotic: O_O;
I know, I know! Lost Odyssey shall be my first game! No need for threats, hehe.
blu-ray drive and 60gb HD?
make it the same colour as elite and uve got a ps3 :D
Will it have backwards capability, a bluray drive and hdmi?
I believe this will happen, but it really doesn't mean anything and I doubt it will help MS out. I mean unless they drop the price of the hard drives they sell I doubt many people will go buy larger hard drives and the fact that the Premium will come with an larger HD won't mean much, if the price cut isn't significant.
@Rubix42:
Sure, if you want to pay $1200.00 for your next, future proof gaming console, which, actually will be outdated before you buy it.
Gaming consoles are nothing more than computers, and those devices have commodity components, which over time become less and less expensive.
I'm curious if Microsoft will drop the arcade version? A 40 Euro price drop would be approximately 60 dollars US. That if enacted here, would put the 20 GB Xbox 360 in the price range of the Arcade.
But why would Microsoft do that? They just reached profitability. They're gonna milk the 20 gig $349 price for as long as they can.
ibweseexbox360blackwith60gighdandblurayplayerandtheycallitthesonyedition.
Fingers crossed MS dump the Arcade model and make the 20GB system the new low-end offering, and give developers access to the hard drive for caching purposes!
No...more.........SKUs.........
I can't do it anymore. Next gen, Sony and MS should just launch their consoles with a 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, etc all the way up to like a terabyte that way we don't to juggle the damned things anymore. Also, none of them should have the same features. 3 of them at random have BC, 4 at random have HD movie playback, only 2 of them come with wireless controllers, 6 at random have motion sensing technology at some point, etc. (with things like built in wireless and ethernet ports and HDMI) with only the terabyte model, sitting at a comfortable $2,000, having all of them.
Wake me when MS makes a non-freezing up, non RRoD 360.
Yes, I'm bitter because Lost Odyssey is really showing me how bad the build quality on the machines are.
I estimate I've lost about 5 hours of playtime so far in that game due to it freezing before I can hit a save point.
I bought a Halo Edition and have had no problems. It is pre-falcon, with the 90nm cpu/gpu. No problems. I dunno. Maybe you guys should ventilate your systems?
If this is true then squash that price cut rumor because you know MS will just claim that 40GB extra keeps the price up.
@Swean: Maybe but I promise you it won't have internal wifi. M$ loves selling those $99 adapters.
There's no reason the consoles shouldn't upgrade SKU's as technology changes, errors are found, improvements can be made, and production costs change.
It's not new and improved SKU's that are the problem, it's SKU's that no one wants, like the Arcade/Core.
I sure hope they drop the price of the add-on hard drives along the way. My 360 is fine, but the larger hard drives are overly expensive to buy separately.
@Losbullitt:
I will complain about the 120gb replacement drive. It is $180 currently. I can get bigger versions for under $80 for a PC. Now I understand Microsoft has their branding/device attachment etc to factor in. Microsoft learned from their XBox days that it is better to charge for crazy prices for accessories than to include them with a system if you want them later.
Viva la 20gb HD! I will delete stuff before I drop $180 down on a 120gb HD.
And so many suckers keep buying it.
@Losbullitt:
Yeah ventilation is the problem. :eyeroll: I think the problem is a little worse than ventilation man. Have you not been paying attention for the past 3 years?
Aw, heck. I actually was waiting to get the 20GB XBox 360. I hate waiting for an unspecified amount of time. Well, hopefully, they want this out by April for the GTA release so I won't wait too long.
Its funny, though, since I'm only waiting because of the XBox shortage crisis to begin with.
@Turael:
Go you.
@RPGr: I feel your pain. But Lost Odyssey's problem is that the save points are so far apart. There arepoints with multiple hours between save points, and that's just too long for any system.
@Sollus:
The last three years, I've owned 5 boxes. When I owned those 5 units, I never had a problem with them... well, freezing on my third one. However, I do concede that the first one, which my ex owns, RRoDed in late 06, early 07. I am also aware that the build quality is worse than an 80s Chevrolet.
I've logged in tons of hours on my 360 and it doesn't give me any grief.
I remember when zip disks were considered HUGE for memory storage. Who'd thought I'd live to see the day when a 20 GB hard drive is considered meager.
I have the 20 gig model and haven't really had an issue. I haven't bought movies or tv shows though, i'm guessing those are like a gig each or something?
MS cant be too happy about these guys urging people to not buy 360's.
My thoughts?
Don't buy anything until is 100% that you can have all the content and fun you paid for, with 100% access any time you want.
And since that guarantee most likely will never happen, using that logic, you shouldn't buy anything.
There, simple decision.
Am I spiteful? You bet your ass I am...
You know what would be a crazy idea…why not make the HDD easily replaceable and cheap for the consumer with an off the shelf drive…
I know, crazy, huh?
@JerrD74: hopes his local arcade gets SFIV:
Best post here!
@JerrD74: hopes his local arcade gets SFIV: should read: ...until it is 100% guaranteed that you...
crazy day
@lionkitten: ebay has tons of 20gb hdds for around $50....
Does MS make that much money from hard drives that it makes sense to not let 3rd parties sell their own add on drives that fit into that top socket?
@lionkitten:
That might be too long for any PERSON, but I sure as hell know that the Wii/PS3 (as a system) could handle save points that are 3-4x further apart without the incessant DREs, lockups, etc that I've been hearing about from alot of people around campus.
