A lot of people write off the Wii. Not SEGA boss Simon Jeffery. He is all about the Wii. No wonder, Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games has done big business! Says Jeffery:
I do think going forward there is very much a place for the hardcore gamers on the Wii and there's a big opportunity for publishers to take advantage of that because we've seen the success of Resident Evil on Nintendo platforms... But I do also believe that a lot of Western publishers are only looking at the Wii for casual and family gaming, and I think that's a mistake — I think there's a lot more opportunity there on the Wii. The Wii isn't just about Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic; it's about so much more. The Wii as a platform has way much more to offer than [Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic], and hardcore gamers traditionally love Nintendo as well. There's no reason why they should be excluded or excommunicated from the Nintendo world.
Bwah? Nintendo world?! Excommunicated?! Wow, talk about being a Wii convert. This guy's fanatical.

I woudln't be surprised if Reggie himself came to the door and excommunicated me.
Hopefully this means Sega has some original software for the Wii lined up.
But without Sonic... y-you don't think they would make another Shadow the Hedgehog game... that would be madness!
I do hope better things are on the horizon for the Wii. I know there are some good games out and that are announced, but it seems for every high quality game that arrives, there's three or four minigame compilations or Ninjabread Men.
"The Wii as a platform has way much more to offer"
the man had to break correct grammatical form to prove his point. he must really think of the Wii as being awesome.
lol that pic wins
@Magic Emperor Anima:
Brawl and Mario Kart. I guess those are, once again, both Nintendo, but I think most people buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games.
@PatMan33: Don't say it out loud!
Ummm excuse me if I'm wrong and I know this is a "Sega" shrill spouting off, but both Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic at the Olympics suck right?
"The Wii is capable of hardcore games. Of course we don't have the balls to make them."
I guess this means if any new Dune games come out they'll be for the Wii since that's the official platform of Fanatical Religious Extremists.
Does this mean Nintendo's Corporate Headquarters are it's own nation like the Vatican?
Someone needs to photoshop that shot of the Pope so that he's holding a Wiimote in his outstretched hand. That would be Epic Win. A Prize to the first person to do it!
@Magic Emperor Anima: Even if awful, NinjaBread Man is pretty awesome.
@gamadaya: True. Well, I was thinking more down the line. Both of those games are coming out pretty soon, and I know some other good games are coming, but I don't think any of the third party games have a chance of selling close to them and especially Wii Fit.
@Reneg: Hehe. Yeah, in a way. If I got it for free, I probably wouldn't sell it or give it away. I'll just invite guests and say "Hey, wanna play an awesome game!?"
I don't know why everyone's still arguing over whether or not the Wii will be a success when it pretty clearly is. Systems are still selling out constantly, virtual console games turn out a surprising profit, Brawl's been in Japan's top spot since it came out... I can't imagine anything coming along and ruining the streak short of a press release saying that the Wii is secretly powered by the souls of your unborn children.
And puppies.
@NeoAkira: beat me to it...that is a grammatical abortion :|
@Reneg: I would literally kill for a full size poster of NinjaBread Man's boxart.
@thefremen: I guess this means if any new Dune games come out they'll be for the Wii since that's the official platform of Fanatical Religious Extremists.
LoL! May the hand of God be with You mate!
I just realize how awesome could it be.
As a Nintendo fanboy I have enough words how Wii could be. Nintendo must support 3rd party developers there is no other way to get some "hardcore" games.
I've got this great game idea...its called "The Passion"
Should be great for those hardcore gamers who feel left out of the wii experience.
There's PLENTY of hardcore games on the Wii, Kotaku trolls just don't acknowledge their existence so they have something to argue about. It doesn't help when you push the definition to make everything on the Wii (and pretty much all other games in the process) a 'casual game'.
Sega does make good games as long as Sonic isn't involved (and even that's changing- Secret Rings actually isn't bad!). Looking forward to what they can create.
After playing Metroid on the Wii, I never want to go back to dual analog. It is so intuitive to just move the remote to look.
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.: I know about that kill the other assassins game, and maybe I'll stretch and throw in Umbrella Chronicles, but no joke I want to know the other games on the Wii that aren't made by Nintendo that would fall into the "hardcore" gamer category.
And by "hardcore" I mean something that resembles a traditonal game idea that they have at least innovated somewhat for the next generation and I would be interested in. Zak and Wiki doesn't count, I've played 5000 3d-platformers on the ps2.
@gulyman: Same. I'd play Halo if it had those controls. It combined the precise aim of a computer mouse with the natural movement of a joystick.
@gulyman: Hmmm see I loved Metroid Prime on the cube, but could never make myself play through Prime 2. I mostly was tired of the controls by that point. Very interesting.
@Pornosaur: ...you're exactly what I was complaining about.
Zak and Wiki DOES count.
And since when has a Nintendo console needed good third party games to succeed? The Wii sure isn't suffering in sales because of a lack of them.
But I would like some more good non-Nintendo games to choose from. Remember, games take a year or two to develop, and most developers didn't think the Wii would succeed until it launched into orbit. You saw the industry in shock as they pumped out shovelware to try and cash in, now other companies have started to work on real games for it. The same thing happened with the DS, though that didn't take off quite as quickly.
@Pornosaur: He's talking about the Wii controls, not the Gamecube controls. VERY different.
@Magic Emperor Anima:
Agreed, man. I want my Wii to become more than just "The Box That Plays Brawl And Glows Occasionally", but so far there's very little indication it will become any more than that...and the customerbase at my store only worries me more. Maybe one out of every twenty Wii customers at my store is a true gamer, the vast, vast majority of 'em all are parents, grandparents, or other various adults who would rather buy Carnival Games or Wii Fit over No More Heroes, Brawl, or even Galaxy. Sigh.
Hey, wait...I can respond to your comments now! Awesome!
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.: Nope I'll still say Zak and Wiki doesn't count. Although I'm conflicted that Capcom has been the only "AAA" third party company to put some budget into some games for the Wii. Although they have supported Nintendo for awhile. I still think RE 4 on the cube was one of the best, front to back, console games I've played. Some where between Super Metroid and Final Fanstasy III in the top 5. Not trolling you my fellow Kotakuite.
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.: Yeah I know since 3 was on the Wii, I would be interested in how that controls.
The Wii is pretty damn sweet and all, but I can't think of any game past Brawl and Mario Kart that I would seriously consider buying in the future. Wiki and No More Heros are damn good, but I think they tanked sales wise.
I'm just waiting for the day that they announce a Big Lebowski Bowling game, and the ultimate college party game will officially be invented.
@Thorax:
For a game with no advertisement or retailer hype, No More Heroes did alright. Kicked the shit out of Killer7, at least...
...not that that's saying much. But I see where you're coming from.
Nintendo's console doesn't appeal to me this generation. The DS and XBLA fulfill my casual needs, but the wii I have given to my 12 year old sister to keep.
I'm eager to find out if Metroid Prime 3 controls better than Red Steel. I played that at a friend's place and it didn't leave good impressions of shooter potential on the Wii. Granted, I understand it was a first shot and maybe the result of shovelwaring.
As far as if Wii feeds the hardcore, sure. Just not a lot. I can't imagine a core gamer living off Wii alone.
@Pornosaur: I'm still not sure how Zack and Wiki doesn't count. It's not a platformer. At all.
Well it sure as shit wasn't based on content.
But I do also believe that a lot of Western publishers are only looking at the Wii for casual and family gaming, and I think that's a mistake
Damn, I wish more developers thought that way. I'd like to see the Wii draw casual gamers into other games and have the whole industry grow rather than segregate. There is as much room in the market for casual and hard core games as there is for platformers and shooters. So we shouldn't be forced to choose one over the other (on any platform).
@Naelok: That would be awesome!lol
Well it seems like whenever a "hardcore" 3rd party game is released, it does poorly for whatever reason. Wii has sold the most units worldwide this generation yet the only successful games seem to be 1st party and/or casual games. It would be interesting to see the Wii with a "Ninja Gaiden" port, but even if that were to happen, I think myself and a lot of other people would rather play it on the 360 or PS3. They've kind of dug themselves a hole (I blame the purple lunchbox for starting Nintendo's downfall... long live the SNES days).
@Xiedo: MUCH better than Red Steel. Trust me, they're strange at first because they're unique, but eventually they'll feel like nothing else.
Also, the first five minutes actually play like a more conventional FPS, but the rest is pure Metroid. Kinda hints at what could be...
Also, it's very pretty. The Wii is no slacker when it comes to graphics, devs just need to rise to the task.
@Archaotic: Heh, yeah. Well, I do look forward to the Tales game that was announced and some others. I just feel like I need more. By more I may not exactly sure I mean "AAA" titles, but I would like developers to put more hard work into obvious games that sell well but aren't as good as they could be. Umbrella Chronicles, Soul Calibur Legends, those kind of games with the established names.
@XidZen: Nintendo's bent over backwards for third party devs. Repeat after me. "It is not Nintendo's job to spend money on ads for third party games." If a Dev is going to phone it in, well..
A little fanatical? Hey if it gets us a class A Sonic game then whatever. Hopefully they'll get right in that.
Okay okay....Sega....If wii is the shiznit for the hardcore then how about making a proper sequel to Zillion for Wii? Maybe a proper sequel to Shinobi? Bring back Hotsuma and let's forget about the debacle that was Nightshade. Kenseiden, The Ninja, Gaires...cmon Sega. You talk all of this big talk but you have a wealth of IPs that you just aren't using. Get with it, chop chop.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: I think they might wanna stop screwing up the IPs they ARE using first.
I think its actually somewhat interesting.
"We've seen the success of Resident Evil on Nintendo Platforms."
I'm willing to bet that an upgraded 360 port of RE4 would've sold better than the wii version. Or the upcoming RE0 port, would probably sell on any system at the moment. I mean, I realize that Capcom is in it for the moneyhats, but I think their main audience is still on the 360, PS3. I'd shamelessly buy up every half-ass GC port if it were on PS3. Since I could care less about a wii (already have a GC thank you) Capcom won't be seeing any of my money, and apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way.
@SnakeCL: I'm willing to bet you're wrong.
I played RE4 on the Gamecube, beat it and loved it. Would I buy the same exact game again just because it was prettier? Absolutely not, and I bet many people would feel the same way. Prettier graphics do not change the game.
However, I did buy it again on the Wii, because the controls did change the game. I even got all of the bottle caps on the Wii version because instead of the bottle cap mini game being a pain in the ass it was awesome. Handgun + IR pointer controls = me ripping off headshots with ease and not fumbling around with clumsy dual analog.
@SnakeCL: There's no reason to be hating on the wii. Which consoles are getting RE5?
PS3? Check.
360? Check.
Wii? Hmm...No Check.
I don't think people who value 'hardcore' games more than 'good' games are going to ever be pleased with the Wii...and why should we care?
I m
