Wow. The PlayStation Portable has become somewhat of a monster in Japan lately. Despite Wii and DS games outselling everything on the PSP this week, the Sony handheld tops the Media Create hardware charts with a comfortable lead. These folks must really love their Musou!
Here's the full hardware rundown for the week of February 25 to March 2 in Japan.
- PSP - 73,706
- Wii - 64,535
- Nintendo DS - 51,922
- PlayStation 3 - 13,520
- PlayStation 2 - 10,986
- Xbox 360 - 2,282

I'm actually more impressed with the Wii. It's a console, yet it regularly sells handheld numbers.
Wow, only 2000 360's.
WHAT?! the psp! look at it go!
*insert psp attachment rate comment*
*watches fanboys kill each other*
The PSP does a lot more than playing games. If I lived in Japan I would buy one just to watch T.V. on the go.
kinda suprised the PSP outsold everything. The psp is startin to pick up some steam though. It took 2 years to figure it out though lol.
to be fair, there are very few people left in Japan who don't own a DS
@Pieman2: Its been like that for a while.
Nothing major is comming out to move systems again thats why.

I wonder how much the DS sales will jump when the next DQ hits the market.
Although I have a feeling its reached a certian level of saturation in the market though.
cripes.. just think how many months it would take to sell a million ps3s at that rate.
i can't be bothered to do the maths, but it seems to be many weeks.
whats going on with the ps3... ? looks like theres fewer hardcore gamers left on that island
@notalkjustrock: no. there are very many. they've sold like 20 million ds's in japan, that's not anything like the entire population - so (and i know i'm being pedantic) there are plenty of people left to buy them.
nother 10k ps2s....
Wow, good for the PSP. Maybe Sony should consider making that their flagship line at this point...
Before all the pissing, moaning and banhammer targeting worthy comments start..
A new Monster Hunter is coming out, along with I believe new colored PSP's That's behind the sales spike. No, the PSP has no chance in hell of catching up to the DS or the Wii, but it keeps a nice sizeable chunk of marketshare all to itself. No, the DS has not reached saturation levels, it's nowhere close to it. No, a week or two or ten of PSP at #1 will have any noticeable effect on the gap between it and the PSP, as the DS has kept 30-50k weekly sales for months on end. When the new Dragons Quest is released for it, you'll see sales spike to 100k plus.
Everything else seems about normal save for the Wii numbers being about 5-10k bigger due to Wii Fit and Brawl still moving systems.
That's all.
@Witzbold: Not even the new iM@S? =P
Thz japanese are racists, amirite?
@MagnusGman: It took two years because the system was overpriced and the games weren't there. That said, this is still a sales spike and will only last a few weeks before dropping back behind the Wii and DS.
can someone point me in the direction of total global sales to date for psp and ds? i'm interested.
I always laughed at these graphs when there were Gameboy Advance SP's on there and the like, selling in the hundreds of units. Does that still happen, and its just too small to display anymore?
God the PSP is such a FAILURE.
[/sarcasm]
@Foxstar Sixtail: Thanks, I don't know how any else would have been able to anazlyze the market so quick, and accurately as you. You must know everything.
Geez, I can't believe how fragmented console and handheld buying is this generation. If I was a developer or publisher I wouldn't know which systems to make games for. Xbox 360 kicks butt in America, PS3 is strong in Europe, PSP is smoking hot in Japan. The only console that is really selling well in all market seems to be the Wii. This is crazy.
holy shit! PSP is selling more than the DS AND Wii!
i think i just shit bricks..
wow, I didn't think the PSP would outsell the Wii considering Brawl has only been out for like a month, but whatevs. Good to see the PSP doing so well.
Oh noes. The PSP is doing good?! Nothing from Sony is allowed to do good, so lets all act like cunts and talk shit about it. :]
Good news for the PSP. Shine like you should, little one. While you're shining, tell Square Enix to port those Star Ocean games over here.
Same for you DS. Tag with the PSP for once and force Square Enix to port those SQ remakes over here.
The PSP is the only handheld to ever give the big N a run for its money in the HH market. This is not at all to say the PSP has the market share of the big N. But you gotta admit, like it or not, that little PSP is pretty special. Nice to see some choice in the HH market.
I remember the PS3 being higher than that before :|
The bar chart version:
psp is winner and xbox is looking more dead than ever. ff7 crisis core...
@dexterr: Crisis Core has been out for months in Japan... is it even still selling well, or its time mostly over and just selling at a slow pace at this point?
@Saint Anima (it won't let me click "reply" to you for some reason), I couldn't have said it better myself! I really hope those Star Oceans for PSP get an English translation.
@celery: It got shitty scores. Sides those folks already had an xbox for the first game. Nobody is going to run out and buy a 360 for the "gimped" version that got low scores anyways.
The real question is: Who are exactly those 2000 rebels that bought the Xbox?
@The Dark Defender: U iz banned, amirite?
Wonderful news, good going Sony.
I think a mint psp came out this week. Also, girls fashion shops at the train stations had this PSP "my stylist" clothes game advertised.
No reason for people to be surprised. PSP has some good games out and some good games in the pipeline. Same with DS. Wii has SSBB and others that temporarily escape me (asides from Mario Kart).
If anything it just shows that the whole "Nintendo pwns all" is premature as sales are showing that gamers are gravitating towards what really matters: GAMES.
So why the surprise to see a Sony platform do well? They DO have some excellent games in the pipe for both platforms.
The success of a console/handheld should be judged based on the quality of its titles, not its sales.
Which would you rather have: the most popular one or the one with better games? (and I'm not trying to imply that the DS has 'worse' games or anything. Just saying...)
@Witzbold: What would he be banned for? It wasn't bashing the 360. It was a joke about 2000 people going against the grain in Japan and buying the system. I didnt read his post as bashing the 360 in any way.
Not surprised that, once again, software will always move hardware.
@KirbyMorph: It was the previous comment about Japanese people being racist.
Good on you, PSP. I always knew you had it in you. Now, while we're at it, buy PATAPON everone.
Everyone in Japan already has a DS.. now they're buying PSPs..
Looks like they buy a lot of systems but not a lot of games.
PSP needed some killer games and to became a good portable media alternative. It took some years to Sony to deliver (they had to understand that they weren't going to win by being arogant with the customers), but now, the product is great, has a good price and people are buying it. Good news then :)
@CockroachMan:
Hardly. Not even half of Japan has a DS yet.
Sony has been launching mucho PSP colors and bundles for the past 3-4 weeks in Japan hence the sales, while Nintendo have been pretty much sitting still with the DS.
Nintendo == no current effort to revitalize DS hardware == constant but no 100k sales.
Sony == many PSP colors and bundles == good sales spikes.
@zztopp: Sorry, I meant 3-4 months not weeks.
Most shocking are the low PS3 sales...damn, 13k.
The PSP vs DS sales are an insight into what will happen in the future with the Wii and PS3. Wii will sell and sell and build a sizeable lead. A few years down the road the PS3 will start to sell more, but by that time it wont matter because the Wii's lead will be almost insurmountable. Just like the DS's.
Again about PS3 sales. This is what happens when you remove the 20 and 60GB models from the market. Watch the numbers since then. They've dropped steadily. That shows that the discontinued model has been in decline and will eventually be totally gone.
If you get rid of 2/3rd of your SKU's, especially good PS3 models (w/ PS2 BC) then obviously the numbers will be much lower. Combine that with little exciting releases and there you have it. Yakuza 3 should bring it up a bit.
@ Whoever Asked
The total sales of the DS in Japan at the end of last year were 20 million.
The Japanese population is 127 million [www.cia.gov]
So just about 15% of the population of Japan owns a DS. Of course, some allowances must be made for people that buy multiple DSes for collectors purposes or whatnot. But even still, that's an insane amount of market penetration. PSP having a recent surge ain't got nothing on that, especially considering the fact that the DS is still selling so well.
Insert 'it prints money' gif here.
I'll be buying a psp in Japan when I'm there next week...maybe I can get help it get the #1 spot again.
@Magic Emperor Anima: Eh, "DQ" remakes, no SQ. Damn typos.
>_>
