Simon Cox, Vice President of Content for the 1UP network, writes in his official 1UP blog that parent company Ziff Davis filing for bankruptcy isn't all gloom and doom. It's not like the staff of 1UP and EGM are going to be working out of refrigerator boxes when and living off government cheese. Business is, well, business as usual and bankruptcy can be a positive thing. How's that again, Mr. Cox?
"Once we re-emerge from the other side of this, fully intact (as we assuredly will be), we will have reduced that debt significantly, and the payments that go with it," Simon says. "Our earnings will once again be our own, and we will have spare cash to invest in building bigger, better, faster, stronger and better-looking websites and magazines."
As soon as ZD gets that debt monkey of its back, the 1UP network and its print brethren are due for some internal investment, which is super duper positive.
So, chin up, subscribers and podcast listeners. It's not the end of EGM as we know it.
That Chapter 11 thing... [1UP]

Here's hoping we can get those massive issues of EGM again like in the good old days...remember the pokemon gold and silver issue? It was thicker then the strategy guide for the game!
Here's hoping they land on their feet. EGM've been around far too long to dissappear now. Shit, I'm still pissed off that Gamefan is gone!
"bigger, better, faster, stronger"
We can rebuild them!
@Crosswayboy:
Well, they certainly sound like they will...although, I must admit; the day I discovered Kotaku was the day I stopped caring about making sure my EGM subscription was current >.>;
Since EGM is the only good thing left out of ZD publications I am glad to hear that they will likely pull out of this. I used to have their Expert Gamer mag and then it changed to GameNOW. Was not a fan. Then GameNOW disappeared.
@diablodevil2: Semi-agreed. They should just go entirely online. No self-respecting gamer gets their news from magazines anymore anyway. The only reason to read EGM is for the exclusives, and those hit the internets within hours of hitting newsstands.
best of luck ZD, still have a box full of old EGM's sitting around somewhere, fond memories of gaming magazines before the internets came around.
@diablodevil2: I didn't read during that era, but I remember issues of the early 90s reaching upwards of 300 pages. Every month you'd get a tome in the mail with bad Street Fighter art on the cover. It was like a mini holiday every time one arrived.
I have to say, EGM and 1up Network have been in a nosedive for a long time. I've been subscribing to EGM since the NES days, and every issue over the past 10 years the magazine has been getting thinner and thinner on content, and more and more biased and opinionated.
The same goes for 1up. Personally, if in the circumstance that Ziff did go under, I'd have nothing to say but good riddance.
ha, that's some great spin on their part.
hope it turns out ok for them.
I work in an office.
I need to be know that I'll still have 1up Yours to listen to on Mondays.
Best picture yet! lol
I've seen that picture before....

I seriously quit subscribing to EGM when I found Kotuku. It's all your fault that they're bankrupt :P
The only time someone sees filing for bankruptcy as a good thing is when you have hit rock bottom. I bet he thinks they are going to sell them to a big company or something... lol...
good to hear, I'm a pretty loyal 1up yours listener and I would hate to have to go elsewhere for my news. Stay strong ZD!
@diablodevil2: They need more ad dollars to make bigger issues. Every full page ad pays for a couple of pages of editorial. Since a lot of spending is going online, it will be a tough proposition(at least for EGM).
Good, I don't think I could live without GFW Radio ;)
Hopefully once 1UP gets everything straightened out, issues will be thicker again and the site will fix it's current problems.
dang! That pic is busted! LOL
"every issue over the past 10 years the magazine has been getting thinner and thinner on content, and more and more biased and opinionated."
Funny you should say so. That EGM and GFW aren't afraid to be opinionated is one their biggest draws for me. Generic, by-the-numbers game reporting is what the internet is for.
Anyway, any review that claims to be non-opinionated is dubious nonsense.
it would really make me sad to see EGM leave when the worst mag ever, Game Informer, is still around.
EGM needs to get rid of Dan Hsu. While I appreciate his stance on journalistic integrity, I loathe his "casual gamer" opinions on games. He is a spoiled rotten "connoisseur" that forgets that the average gamer is not so privileged. EGM should be a magazine for real gaming enthusiasts like it used to be.
@Crosswayboy: I need the EGM magazine. What else would I read while pooping?
*I have a free subscription anyways. I'm just helping them go bankrupt.
@skrame: I second that, i also need EGM for the pooper, my friend used to bring his laptop with him to the pooper, but thats overboard + it dropped and destroyed half of his USB ports (dont ask me why USB ports it just did)
So sorry Kotaku, i cant take you to the pooper with me
They seriously need to fix their website design. It's about as bad as Gamespy's website. It really doesn't feel intuitive at all. So I'm hoping when they free up some capital, they have some money to pay their art and web people and make something that works much better.
Was sad to hear they were bankrupt. I really do like listening to all of their editors, they seem to have a lot of fun and have some really great opinions on video games. Its just they need to work on their webpage a bit. I really don't actually read many of the features on the site because of it.
The Magazine on the other hand reads really well.
