After seeing the demo of EA's Spore running on the iPhone earlier today, we were scratching our heads as to whether or not we'd actually see the game in our hands (not just on the jumbotron as a tech demo). But according to word we just received from EA, we will one day play Spore—as well as a pile of other EA titles—on the iPhone.
Today we announced SPORE for iPhone and have other games in early stages of development.Excellent news. EA hopes to release iPhone Spore this September alongside their other planned platforms. The game takes advantage of the iPhone's multi-touch, tilt sensors and accelerometer.We are using the new iPhone SDK to develop games for the iPhone OS.
We're really excited about what this means for people to be able to play EA games on their iPhone or iPod touch and are thrilled to extend our relationship as a developer of games for various Apple products (Mac, iPod nano, video iPod and now iPhone & iPod touch).
From EA's CEO John Riccitiello, "The animation technology in the iPhone OS enables us to build awesome games. I think iPhone consumers are going to be blown away by the games we create for this platform."

Is there a single modern platform that Spore ISN'T going to be released for? Holy shit.
@Roadkill: Xbox/PS3. *Cries*
Battery Life - 25 minutes.
@WallaJoy- Snorlax?: don't cry, it's not all that. here's how to get way more pleasure than spore (mind you it's 5 games)
1) fl0w
2) god of war
3) red alert 2
4) civ4
5) elite 2 frontier
absolutely no contest.
iPhone overload
this is my perception of spore - following playing it. it's like you got a flash version of a full game... that's about it. so, take that idea and apply it to those 5 games i listed above. mind you god of war is somewhat different to spore stage 2, but it's a 3rd person 'walk around killing mops' thing... you could put in Wow if you like - although Wow is trash
@Clarke: Exactly hahaha. I listen to my Touch like 30 or 20 mins a day and the battery lasts me for a 5 work week period (5x30 mins=2 1/2 hrs) so i cannot imagine if someone wants to play with it.
That thing eats the battery when i am surfing the net while on the can :o/
@comedy: mops?!
@comedy: So when exactly did you get to PLAY Spore? You know, seeing as its not out yet and all. Perhaps you did at some GDC-type event, I'm just curious.
@Clarke: My iPhone battery lasts a pretty long time dude. Even if I'm using internet and data features while on wifi, I get pretty good life out of the thing.
@DaiMacculate: i was doing focus testing. about 3 or 4 months ago. i played the first 3 stages for a total of 2 hours (not long, but i did complete the 1st and 3rd - i don't know where the 2nd ends) then the next day i played stages 4 and 5 for 2 hours total... again, not a long time, but in 35 mins i had finished stage 4 (world conquest). and was onto 5 - space exploration.
it's got scope, i just don't think the 'jack of all trades, master of none' thing is my bag... mind you, if you like a quick distraction, or you like the idea of making your little creatures your own, then it's got some depth.
it's just over too quickly.
i'll tell you one thing though, the way in which you do the military units thing is interesting. basically you have like 2 ground units, 1 flying and 1 boat... but you can edit their specs at any time.
Portable Warfare. Sony must be scrambling to get that PSPhone out the door now.The lack of buttons will hold it back from being a real game platform, that and the price.
@DaiMacculate: ok, hopefully this comes through, but they haven't released the cover art yet have they? it appeared that most people liked this little chap who looks a bit like sid the sloth (from ice age) he's got those far apart eyes, and his little face was in the water (at the bottom of the picture). that's what most of us voted for.
mind you, it's a bit tricky trying to guess the art on one focus group, i bet they've run hundreds by now.
@valhum: I have no idea how your touch gets that lousy battery life. I play mine on campus from around 830am-900pm with maybe two one hour breaks for class and I get two days worth of music.
I love my iphone. If anyone is one the fence about getting one do yourselfa favor a get it. U won't regret it.
@SofaKingHI: I'm going to run out and get one right now with that kind of endorsement!
I just got a touch the other day, by saying iPhone does that include the touch?
@RichMeisterMan: Yes.
We are using the new iPhone SDK to develop games for the iPhone OS.
We're really excited about what this means for people to be able to play EA games on their iPhone or iPod touch
Note this is never going to compete at the same level as DS or PSP, since its not a dedicated game platform, but even if all it does is raise the bar for Mobile Phone games thats a good thing.
@RichMeisterMan: the ipod touch is supported too, apparently.
basically they're the same hardware.
the free features that are being given to the iphone in its next update will be usable on the touch too, but will cost money, much like the january update.
@comedy: Appreciate the Info, yeah I'm not sold on it yet personally, as much as I loved SimCity I haven't been that into anything else Wright has done.
@RichMeisterMan: Yes
And if I was you I wouldn't buy the january apps since someone will probably just create similar if not identical programs
@ThisCharmingMan: Are you seriously comparing HTML to a 3D engine? Check your CPU's load while surfing the internet and then check it when you're playing a 3D game.
Is it just me, or does anyone else feel they should worry about getting at least 1 version of spore out before they decide to port it to any and every device that has electronics inside?
Spore will also be released for home phones, featuring cutting edge green and black graphics.
@MBC: Damn man, that is a lot o_0
an iphone game, how unexciting.
Haha, Apple and Gaming? BWAHAHAAHA, yeah right.
Photoshop isn't a game, stupids!
HEY EA!! How bout focusing on getting out the REAL version of Spore instead of wasting time on versions that should be nothing more than an after thought. You have been promising this game for how long now??? It is re-goddamn-diculous that they are wasting their time on a freaking iPhone version when the iPhone will be completley outdated by the time they get around to getting Spore out to PCs or consoles.
@Mr.SithNinja: this argument could be used against any fixed-hardware device.
I would like to point out that any PR nonsense about the game being built in two weeks is pure bullshit.

I've known since august 07 that EA was working on porting at least a portion of Spore to mobile platforms.
I think Spore was going to be extremely multiplatform from the very beginning anyway, I'm not complaining.
@The_Inquisitor: i think the mobile platforms before this announcement were the more 'regular' phones. i don't think apple had provided companies with the development kits until fairly recently.
still, it could just be pr bullcrud.
@The_Inquisitor: They did a similar thing way back when they first introduced OSX and faster processors, showed a version of Photoshop that had been built in "Just a few weeks" to run on the new OS. Now, it took like 1.5-2 years before a truly native retail release came out. The point was just to show that the basic functions of an application, in this case probably the Mac version of Spore's underlying code mixed with probably graphics from the first level or so of the mobile/DS version, code be ported to the new architecture with a relatively low level of effort. That doesn't mean everything works right or won't take months to get all working right, it just means the app can run and do some of its main stuff.
So its impressive, but yeah I agree it shouldn't be misinterpreted as something bigger than it is ;)
