As Apple's software development kit (SDK) presentation continues, SEGA reveals what they've had up their sleeve—Super Monkey Ball. Boasting an excellent framerate, the developers claim:
This is not a cellphone game. This is a full console game. And we underestimated the power of the device. We had to fly in a developer to upscale the art for the iPhone.Bonus shot after the jump.
Hot. Once again, no confirmation as to whether or not this game is actually going on sale.
UPDATE: It looks like this is planned for commercial distribution as well, given that Sega of America president Simon Jeffery explained, "The iPhone OS is a robust development platform that will allow Sega to deliver mobile gaming experiences that are truly compelling. Using the iPhone's accelerometer to power a tilt control feature adds a whole new dimension to Super Monkey Ball, and we can't wait for gamers to try it."

bleh. f'ing ippod. i hate it's guts.
In other words, it's the oldest one at the kids table who condescends to all other kids and longs to be with the grown-ups.
Now I can get frustrated with a touch screen!
How I love/hate you SMB.
Wow, actually looks quite nice.
I wonder what graphics related hardware is found inside the iPhone.
Hee hee. "Super Money Ball".
Oops. yet appropriate.
Unless they get the original Half Life on there, I am not interested.
So, this is basically going to be a DS port machine?
Here comes the flood!
You mean the didn't even HAVE a developer in the first place? Who made the art then, a 3-year old?
By the way, was Super Money Ball intentional? Sure seems that way! Go $ega!
I'll buy that if it includes super monkey race with phone tilting steering action!
"We had to fly in a developer to upscale the art for the iPhone."
It's amazing this guy didn't choke to death with the amount of shit flying out his mouth.
I wonder how powerful the iPhone is... as powerful as the PSP perhaps?
480x320 screen...
@comedy: You're a fucking genius commenter, man.
Seriosuly, you guys are complaining about real games coming to a handheld you're admittedly not interested in buying? For real? Dorks. Get back to work, what do you think we're paying you for? Sheeit.
I was just looking at the Spore article, then, back on the front page I see "Apple", "Sega", "Super Monkey Ball" in the same article skeleton as the Spore one and I thought April 1st was coming early or something for a moment.
Ok....what's so good about this game? The sheer idea of *playing* on that... thing is just nothing I ever would want to do.
I'd rather have an iPhone for something abstract like making phone calls. No joke. Keep the games on handhelds please. Games on mobiles have always been a huge f*cking waste of time. And they even charged for them, LOL. I sure as shit never paid for those little Java crap-apps and am happy I didn't.

Actually it has an accelerometer, so you get tilty, not touch screen for that game. Seriously if this "phone" had proper buttons and a directional pad there would be no need for a ds or psp.
This looks pretty awesome. Did Sega get the SDK in advance? How long have they had it? I know the iPhone has some motion sensing -- like for when you're looking at photos and hold it portrait or landscape. I wonder how sensitive it is -- it would be sweet to play monkey ball as if you were actually holding the world in your hands.
@Comedy: May the hammer fall swifty and silently. Can't even be bothered to spell "ipod" correctly?
I'd just like to point out, i read the press conference, the iphone isnt becoming a port of a ds because the ds doesnt have an accelerometer. You control the monkey with the accelerometer.
iPhone is not in any way on my radar of things to buy (I have Verizon anyways) and games aren't going to help it. My friend let me mess with his for a little bit and I personally think it's annoying not having buttons. That being said MonkeyBall does look like the perfect game for it.
What's funny is that I know the guys at Sega Mobile working on this game. Hi Lance! Hi Alex!
They won't see this.
@Candlejack:
Why by an iPhone just to make phonecalls when you can do that with the other 30,000 devices out there?
I'm personally looking forward to what might develop for this new software platfo
@greeble: So basically, your looking for the rumoured PSP Phone.
@Manny: I take it you've never seen an iPhone screen, then.
Man, you can really see gamer brains at work here. "Apple! iPhone! Quick, I must think of something negative to post! No time to think, though!"
@catapult37: Sega had it for two weeks, it seems.
@catapult37: EA, AOL, Sega and others had 2 weeks to make thesse demos. Both spore and monkey ball use the acelerometer to move characters around.
The Acelerometer is a 3 axis one like any other, so it can be incorporated in many things. How complex the graphics can be. I still don't know, but i wouldn't think is gonna be a psp competitor.
I also don't think the iphone/touch are gonna be competing with the DS or PSP. But rather have not such sucky mobile games on it (compared to cell phones).
I believe the iPhone has an nVidia GPU and a 600+ MHz processor so it may be capable of better graphics than even the PSP or PS2.
@Nintenboy01: Oops sorry, not Nvidia but a PowerVR GPU. So it may be capable of at least Dreamcast-level graphics.
Upscale the art? The Wii version didn't properly work for them eh? lulz I kid.
my only gripe with accelerometer based games on the iPhone is that the orientation to which you are now forced to hold the damn device. Sore necks to surely follow as you can't hold the damn thing at a tilt without causing an accelerometer message. Thus to keep it 'steady', you'll be hunched over this thing, looking straight down over it. Thanks, but no thanks. Just gimme some traditional inputs not some overly exagerrated input. i would rather push a button than have to tilt the damn things all different directions and altering my view of the screen etc. I wish they would stop putting games on devices for the sake of whoring out the tilt functionality. Why not focus on replicating input that matches traditional inputs via a touchscreen.. ya know, a touchscreen implementation of dual analog and tweaking sensitivity based on accelerations for actions to be more discerning.
sorrry i'm ranting, back to my [INSERT REAL GAMING DEVICE HERE]
yay! Cant wait to play it!
As an iPhone owner I'm excited. The games aren't going to compete with consoles or even the PSP, but you can't tell me they couldn't be better than half the shit that's on the DS. Cooking Mama is perfect for the iPhone.
@L_K_M: Yeah this whole anti-apple jazz is so dumb. It's almost like if you own a machine with windows or linux you are supposed to hate apple. Gain some perspective. It's a goddamn computer. Get a fucking life.
@Milihpen: Exactly...you hit the nail. Why buy an iPhone when all it does is make phone calls and play games that don't live up to even GBA standards. Its organizer features are deeply inferior to other, cheaper mobiles as well. I have to quote Ballmer here who once said something like "Apple threw the most expensive phone ever on the market and it doesn't do anything different".
Pointless. I can listen to music & take photos with my (by now dated) K800i. That must have come out like 1-2 years ago. So, yea, I'm part of the "hi iPhone, I don't want or need you, not even want to know about your existence"-crowd. And maddox joins me :)
That being said, this is totally interesting, hopefully this stuff will work on the touch also. I will definitely love to play me some monkey ball when I eventually replace my current ip00d
Interesting, but the fingerprints on the screen would KILL me. I wipe my phone enough as it is.
*goes back to playing MAME on Palm*
@catapult37: Yes, may it, on the person who summoned it without just cause.
@Dauragon C. Mikado: When I replace my Ipod, I'll just get the 120 GB Video version instead. As many have pointed out, there are cheaper phones with better functionality, so putting all that cash on an Iphone is pointless. :/
You guys are right. I hate it when developers make games. How dare they.
I can see Monkey Ball working as a "mobile phone" style game. Well, even if this IS Monkey Ball... I fully expect lots of broken iPhones both from it slipping out from between their fingers as they try to jerk away from a cliff, and from it getting tossed at walls in frustration.
Ouendan 3 confirmed!
@MrPerson: Wrist straps, rubber padding...
...this is a strange new world we live in.
The iPhone is easily the best piece of technology I have ever purchased. And this is coming from someone who never owned an Apple product before.
Hate on it all you want, but the interface is awesome. It is unbelievably intuitive and after having one for less than a month, I don't know how I lived without one. The difference between it and a "normal" cell phone is like comparing DOS Shell to Windows XP.
@comedy: Uhh if you jailbreak it the iPod touch can do anything the iPhone can. It's way better than the iPhone if you don't need a phone. Double the capacity for the same price. The only downside is no speaker.
As soon as AT&T takes its deathgrip off iPhone I will buy it.
I fail to see how this is a bad thing, the iPhone is not in the same device category as the PSP or the DS even if the hardware is capable of supporting the same level of games, it's a mobile device and if anything might legitimize the mobile gaming industry beyond the 666th Tetris or Pipe Dream clone.
But I tend to forget that fanboys are fueled by hatorade and idiocy, mostly hatorade... and idiocy :(
If any of us had to place bets on what features a DS2 or PSP2 would have, I guarantee you that a touch screen and tilt functionality would be right at the top of the list.
So whilst I have no interest in mortgaging my house to get an iPhone, I hope these games do well, because it might force Sony and Nintendo to start planning new and better systems.
Also, Virtual Console/PSN compatability, please?
Lol, the iPhone can support games like this but it can't play flash. That is pathetic. I'd get one if Steve Jobs didn't have the device in a fucking death grip.
@MrSatan: flash is shit
@gigantor21: I said nothing of an iphone. I said I hope this stuff will eventually work with the iPod touch.
My friend will probably be the first to buy that.
