This trailer for Funcom's Age of Conan MMO, currently due for a May PC release, features all of the hallmarks of classic high fantasy. Sweeping vistas, exotic locations, fantastic creatures, visceral combat, and a woman with a lovely voice singing nonsense words over powerful music. Of course it could just be a real language I am not familiar with. All I know is that halfway through I could swear she sang, "Manly Pepsi, thank you email now", and if my evil plan succeeds you shall hear it as well. Muhahaha!

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
AHAHAHHA manly pepsi rules
"Manly Pepsi, thank you email now"
I'm pretty sure that's what she actually sings.
Weird. I always considered Conan to fit in the category of low fantasy. As sarcastic as that sounds, I'm totally serious.
Damn you Fahey, that's exactly what I ended up hearing! :P
Im getting it for the xbox 360. No doubt about it.
Your evil plan succeeded.
I have already paid off my pre-order and I have been waiting for this game since the first BETA launch. I've played many months of WoW, FFXI, GuildWars and the free MMO's out there. This feels like something a new to the MMORPG genre. I will definatly be critical of this game once the FULL retail version is launched.
I have to admit I don't know much of the Conan lore. I know and like the film, and the fun crappy clones, but maybe the comic Conan is a different animal, more flashgordon-ish than californiagobernador-ish.
i heard everything except the Pepsi. It sounds like Ipsi
Those crafty Pepsi advertisements.
I was under the assumption that Conan was low fantasy.
Though I have sworn off MMOs since getting off a brutal WoW addiction, this one sure looks tempting.
Coke > Pepsi...
------
The game does look good though ;)
I thought that Conan was medium to well-done fantasy.
Conan isn't high fantasy, it is, as Dabisu noted, low fantasy, or, in the original meaning of the label, pure sword and sorcery. Lord of the Rings is high fantasy.
GAH, As so many people have said, Conan is NOT High Fantasy.
It's Sword and Sorcery, or Low Fantasy.
Robert E Howard essentially created the genre in the same way as Tolkien created High Fantasy.
This is a travesty, Fahey, a TRAVESTY!
@tzaketh:
Doh, beaten to it.
Conan is Low Fantasy.
For comparison, Lord of the Rings is High Fantasy.
Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks are high fantasy - this is unashamedly low fantasy.
@tzaketh: What he said.
bahahaha, too funny Fahey. I heard it.
I always considered day-dreams to be low fantasy, and ketamine as high fantasy.
I heard it! I heard the Manly Pepsi!
@SorenKier: does that make shrooms mid-fantasy?
high and low? never heard of it before. if low fantasy is more realistic fantasy without magic how come conan quilify as low? im pretty sure i saw some magic in the movie..? or at least a huge snake?
I hope every realizes Conan is low fantasy.
If you want to read up on the different subgenres of fantasy, just go to wikipedia and search "fantasy." I'm too lazy to provide a link...
Anyway, I must say the trailer looks good. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes on this MMO, although I haven't heard anything spectacular that would make me want to ditch WoW for it.
Conan isn't "low fantasy" its Sword and Sorcery at it's finest! The trailer while good, is a bit to typical for me. I'm still very excited about the game, and I'm finding harder and harder to await to may release!
Gods & Heroes:Rome Rising was better looking.
There is magic, yes, hence the "sorcery," in the Sword and Sorcery genre label; the low does't necessarily mean realistic in the sense that it's fantastical elements are diminished, it means a kind of amoral realism. High Fantasy typically has a very distint, Christian set of black and white morals - there are the good guys, and the evil guys. Low Fantasy, or Sword and Sorcery, is a much more gray setting, where there is little that separates the protagonists from the villains.
Can anyone tell me if Conan is high or low fantasy?
Thanks.
@JorgieX: As a former beta tester, all i can really tell you is to avoid Age of Conan. It is not the game their PR claims it is. If you absolutely loved everything about anarchy online, you may like AoC. As it's basically a copy+paste of most things just with better graphics.
I'm not impressed by what I've seen of the game so far.
I like the graphics, for everything except character models. They look kinda clunky and EQ2 plasticky? But the environments look pretty good and I like the semi-realistic armor, something you might actually see in a history book. And I have some type of medieval fetish with roman armor so I'm glad it makes an appearance. I'll play the open beta and see whats up but not sure if this will distract me from WoW or WAR.
@LeBaron:
Low fantasy doesn't mean there\s no magic. It means magic is uncommon and doesn't pervade daily life.
Also, the (first) Conan film, while not at all bad, was a gross misrepresentation of the character and world.
High Fantasy: [en.wikipedia.org]
Low Fantasy: [en.wikipedia.org]
Sword and Sorcery: [en.wikipedia.org]
To hear Wikipedia tell it, traditional Conan is S&S. Interestingly enough, it describes the upcoming game as "Low Fantasy" in the actual article.
Yes I can hear it...
Nice environment btw.
So... by my postulation... If...
1. Lord of the Rings
2. Conan
3. High Fantasy
it follows that, IF 1 AND 2 = 3 causes you frustration, then
4. You don't have a girlfriend.
QED
Not to nitpick the trailer too much, but I'd have to say that the music didn't go very well with the action that happened in the latter half. It was perfect for the beginning but... meeeh. Oh well.
These animations are in-game? I doubt it. Most are too smooth. How can the engine detect a decapitation, if is a server side event, and the lag is 200ms. ??????
This video is REALLLY strange to me.
Great overall. Alright music. Needs better fabric physics.
What's even more disturbing is after she says "Manly Pepsi thank you email now" she says
"you can see Mary had herpes"
totally heard the Pepsi line... damn you
That's a lot of beheading going on.
Yeah, but Conan is low fantasy, so...
"Manly Pepsi, thank you email now" ROFL it does sound like she says that. Anyway, I want to try this game.
Whoa.
Fantasy snobs... on the internet?!?!
No.
Way.
Yup, R.E.Howard's Conan is Sword & Sorcery, not High Fantasy. The MMO is a whole different story, though. It looks pretty much like a regular MMO cliche-fest (standard character classes, healers, wizards running around shooting fireworks) with some S&S touches here and there (gore). MMOs are built around things that don't belong in the Sword & Sorcery genre (no magical healers, no player spellcasters, no respawns, no grinding, no magic weapons/armour, etc.).
This game PWNS on the spurting blood. I can't wait for the nightmares to begin...LOL
wow it sounds like she says some more stuff after that too...like we can see many enemys, or teh pepsi has many m&d's, wow subliminal messages ftw!
I didn't realize that Norwegian was classified as "nonsense words" now.
@Yahto: Please, don't kill our fun, its not Norwegian, theres no such place GOT IT
I think she also said something about Mary Anne.
Strictly speaking, Conan isn't high fantasy, but swords and sorcery, which means magic is darker, more dangerous, and not as common so it scares the shit out of normal folks.
Looking forward to this game. All my friends are still playing WoW, but I got sick of it, and hope I can get them all to migrate.
FWIW Conan is considered "Heroic Fantasy."
And this looks AWESOME. Decaptitation and spurting blood? Fuck yeah!
Better than helping hobbits get laid in LOTRO. "Oh please man-captain, take these flowers to widow scorchthighs in upper fridged-delving!" WTF ever.
