MTV's Tracey John spent some time with LEGO Batman: The Videogame earlier this month and managed to pluck some interesting tidbits away from the game's producer, Loz Doyle.
The game will feature 18 levels, with three different stories and six levels per a story. Each level will include two-player, drop-in/out coop play (off and online). The story centers around a break-out from Arkham Asylum and the Batcave will be the hub of the game.
Other interesting tidbits include:
Each story is playable from either the Hero or Villain point of view. (For example, in the aforementioned levels, you could also play as Catwoman trying to steal the diamond or as Batman trying to rescue Commissioner Gordon.)
...
There will be strictly vehicular levels in the game, although Doyle declined to say what they would be. (The press release states that the Batmobile, Batwing and Batboat will be available.)
...
As for the DS version: "It's not a port, it's completely done separately. It's done at Traveller's Tales by the same team that did the 'Saga' DS version, and they're a really, really good team. It's kind of the same but different, and there's a lot of touch screen in there." He declined to say anything about the PSP version.

I feel ashamed for how much I actually want to play this.
I'm not ashamed.. if they made Lego:Barbie, I'd play it... now *that's* shame.
@futurebiblehero: Why? I've had nothing but good times playing the Lego Star Wars games. These look just as fun as them to me.
@Kaine: Well it's not so much of the game itself being embarrassing as much as it is the degree of how much I'm looking forward to it. If someone asked my three most anticipated games at the moment, It'd be Dragon Quest IX, Street Fighter IV and... Lego Batman. There's arguably something wrong with that.
I think the 'Lego' series is the finest series to break the age barrier in ages.
Ratchet, Jak and Mario are also up there.
I wonder if we'll get to hear Joker laugh insanely. I always did love Mark Hamill's Joker.
Heheheheh....hahahahahahaha....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!
I would think Lego Star Wars should cause the most shame in the series. Don't let the bias of the internet fool you. Star Wars has not become hip, cool, or even acceptable.
@futurebiblehero: Batman is awesome, Legos are still fun to look at what people make (I am horrible at making things with them). Put the 2 together how can you go wrong?!
@TheSonicGamer: Yea, it would rock that much more if they had Mark Hamill's laugh in it. But the 'Lego' series characters usually just grunt.
I hope there's not as much money collecting as in Lego Star Wars. That was a bit much...
"Qui Gon, we need to escape!"
"Hang on, padawan, I need to shake down these chairs... and this lamp... and these boxes... and I need to walk around the entire rim of the room... and complete these puzzles... and assemble these lego sets... and grab that golden lego brick..."
"Qui Gon, battledroids!" *lightsaber*
*Floods the screen with Lego Money*
"Ooh, nice find, Anakin, break out the money purses!"
*sigh*
@futurebiblehero: Well, I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean if you like a game, there's no shame in looking forward to it. I mean not everything you enjoy has to be like a "hardcore" game. But if that's the way you feel that's cool.
@futurebiblehero:
I see nothign wrong with being excited about this game. I loved Lego Star Wars. It brought together two of my favorite things. Legos and Star Wars. Now I get Legos and BatMan. The sad part is that there are developers who spend a hell of a lot more money, and their game pales in comparison to a game with no talking.
That is the sad part. Even if Lego BatMan is only as good as Lego StarWars, it's still better than a lot of games out there. It's fun, brings somethign back that we all love, and its barrier to entry is very low. All you need is a love of either Legos, BatMan, or both.
This will be one of the few day 1 purchases for me.
Even though that Lego Halo
thing was a joke, I think it would
be perfect for a Lego treatment.
There's so much to make fun
of, in that homage-sorta way,
and the thing is a trilogy for
chrissakes, just like indy and star wars.
Hopefully this will be one of
those cases where the gag finds
such popularity that they actually
consider making the parody real.
Hopefully the vehicle levels will be better in this game then the Lego Star Wars vehicle levels. The controls did not work too well with the camera movement.
So each level playable from Hero and Villain perspective? Different objectives maybe? If each level is Villain specific that could be awesome.
I noticed that in the trailer: I saw Scarecrow during gameplay smashing stores. Gonna be AWESOME. :-D
I hope they go back to putting these out on PSP. I bought the Starwars one for PSP and have enjoyed it. Handheld just seems like a fitting place for these games too.
I can't wait for this to come out is there any word on any type of release date yet?
Elementary-
Not really. If you're between say,30-40,you like Star Wars because you remember when it was for EVERYONE,even football players were allowed to watch it.
If you're a teenager,or early 20's you just remember those acne scarred kids playing Star Wars trading card games,and understandably you don't want to be involved.
So, I guess I should just accept by now that I won't be getting to play as Nightwing.
Also, if the story focuses on a huge break out of Arkham Asylum...then it really should be Knightfall. And the main villain can only be Bane. (obviously not, but that would rock to see Lego Bane breaking Batman)
I love me some Lego Star Wars. Lego Batman and Indy are up there with GTA4 and MGS4 as must have first day titles.
This game is my childhood in a nutshell. Batman, Legos, and Video Games.
My inner child is having a freak out. I can't wait for this.
@PTTSeven: Anyone going to correct him on the whole Qui Gon/Anakin thing?
Anyway, I hope this game doesn't have a lame Scarecrow in it. The only time he was not completely pathetic was in Batman Begins, anything else Scarecrow was in made him look like an idiot. This game needs awesome Scarecrow, at least as an alternate skin.
@futurebiblehero:
Indeed there is. You should have LEGO Indiana Jones on that list as well.
@ekkobi:
They grunt because they need to convey ideas that would normally require speech. There's no reason they _can't_ laugh, even though every time someone laughed in the LSW games it was a silent chuckle.
@Danarcho:
LSW2 and LSWCS vehicle levels worked a lot better compared to the janky levels they had in the first game, so clearly they learned a lot the first time around.
@-EDGE-:
No such luck, apparently. The platforms listed in the ad on the back of the Batcopter instructions say PS2, PS3, DS, Wii, PC, XBL, and 360. No PSP, no previous generation consoles, and no GBA.
@_Ted_:
According to the GameTrailers trailer, September 2008.
@Lackshmana:
Why not? They made a Nightwing minifig, and frankly, LEGO Batman has a lot less available minifigs than LEGO Star Wars did, but I believe they've managed to accomodate every last physical Star Wars minifig in the three iterations of the game. You know, except for the whole skin-color issue, since all of the original yellow SW minifigs got corpse-colored like the new ones.
@Ed-the-Third:
I thought one of the three B:TAS/TNBA designs worked pretty good. I hated the TNBA "undertaker" look, and hated Jeffrey Combs' voice even more. And the original B:TAS "balloon-headed" Scarecrow design didn't really look all that great, but the straw-haired B:TAS version did look believable, and there were actually some decent B:TAS Scarecrow eps. Now, granted, the Batman Begins Scarecrow was indeed several levels cooler than any of those three animated versions, but he kinda loses out in that his co-villain couldn't even pronounce his own damn name correctly.
Im just curious what they will base the story on. At least Star Wars and Indiana Jones follow trilogies. If they go the "Batman The Animated Series" route Ill be happy.
Yay, so the DS version won't be a broken, horribly glitches and terrible looking lazy port!
@TheSonicGamer None of the lego games have speech, but we'll see who laughs last.
This game looks so awesome. I hope it's better than Lego Star Wars, not that LSW was bad, I just hope they can raise the bar again.
I wonder what a Harley/Ivy scene would look like in the Lego universe
isit me... or does a a Lego DS game sound somewhat appealing?
This game is going to be awesome - and if it's not, it's still going to be better than most of the Batman games made.
'Loz Doyle'? That's a lame pseudonym... She was the slutty gal in Frasier, right?
@JohnnyD57333:
Do they have to base it on any pre-existing story? I mean, this is Batman. He's a comic-book character. The whole point is to keep coming up with metric tons of original stories. Very few of the B:TAS eps were based on pre-existing comic book stories, none of the movies really follow any either, and frankly I think I'll enjoy being surprised by what TT Games can come up with.
@Sabre_Justice: Okay, no more long name.:
LSW:CS worked perfectly fine, just so you know. TT Games developed it from the ground up after the crapfest that Lucasarts reportedly wrestled out of Amaze Entertainment's hands with LSW2.
@huginn - No I will not give you a hug!:
LEGO Star Wars 2 DS did indeed sound like a cool game. Unfortunately, it wasn't. LEGO Star Wars: Complete Saga DS helped make up for it quite a bit, but honestly one of the things I enjoyed about the LSW GBA games was the fact that they were completely different games from what got released for consoles/PC under the same title. LSW2DS was supposed to be a third unique take on the same game...but it was a broken shell of what it should have been. It also would have been the only game in the series where you'd be able to select any unlocked character at any point during Freeplay, rather than being limited to picking 1-2 characters upon entry, and having a small batch of alternate characters semi-randomly assigned.
@Protector one:
That would be _Roz_ Doyle.
