Wow. You certainly don't run across these every day. Goodwill Industries is auctioning off a NIB Sega Dreamcast. The system comes with the system CDs and an extra controller. No games are included but those aren't too tough to find - even Amazon has a wide variety from third-parties.
My Dreamcast is still running beautifully and Soul Calibur still looks great on it so I can attest to the longevity of the system. I am curious however to know the story behind how this wound up at Goodwill in the first place. I hope that some college student doesn't go home at Spring Break to find that his collection of vintage gaming systems has been cleared out to make room for Christmas decorations by Mom.

This is horribly tempting. Good thing I'm in the UK so I can't get it regardless ^_^
Looks like he took it out of the box for the auction.
You can get these for $30 regularly on ebay.
NRFB NRFB!
Nice steal, but I hope that grown-up Jimmy isn't missing his console when he gets home this spring :D
Some poor boys dream was donated away..
Funny, I was about to buy a used Dreamcast just yesterday. I wasn't sure if 40 dollars was a good deal though. :-(
I wish I could find stuff like this at the good will store in my town.
and alos off topic: Hey Drew!
yah NIB would suggest shrink wrapped.
which would bring more cash value.
since its opened its "like new" condition
not so much. but cool regardless.
MvC I have trouble running it. It takes FOREVER to get that thing to start, but once it does it's cool.
@Dopeski: If it works that's an alright deal. I paid 50 for mine about 4 years ago. Came with a racing wheel 2 controllers 2 vibration backs 3 vmu's and a few games.
@mywhitenoise: i dont know about 30 but yeah.. i bought my gf a brand new last gen dreamcast for christmas this past year for 60 something. ive seen more on there since then, now u know what would be crazy? a genesis nib.. i got a turbo grafx 16 nib in 2001.
Was this really worth an entire post (not trying to be a dick or anything)?
EWWWW.... Dreamcast.... Majora's Mask is soooooo much better....
Ack. If someone sold my Dreamcast I'd have to kill them in the most brutal way possible. :]
i never had a dreamcast, but after seeing the image of its controller, i realize that microsoft's original xbox controllers completely ripped this off
i love my dc :). it's always hooked up.
@giant_chibi:
That's like saying Mountain Dew ripped off V8-Splash.
I got mine when the system price dropped to $50, I went straight to BestBuy to get it and from there to EBgames for a copy of MvC2. I had a great weekend.
I still have it connected to the tv in my living room, that's how good and reliable the system is.
This reminds me i need to pick up a backup dreamcast soon. I know my gd-rom is going to crap out soon.
Reliable?
There was quite a common problem where they'd keep restarting themselves, you had to bend the pins on the mainboard to connect to the power supply better to fix it...
I just wanted to add that I electrocuted myself while fixing my Dreamcast FAR too many times... Totally worth it though!
@Jesus Christ: Why not? We post about retro auctions quite a bit.
I got my DC in my local tesco for €10. Only the box was in the bargain bin so they had to go in the back to get its contents. It took them like 20 minutes to return and they had so much stuff it was laughable. Not only did I get all I was supposed to get in the box, I got some random cables, a memory card reader for a pc and xbox controller. They admitted they weren't sure what to give me so they just gave me the lot. :)
@Northernsky: has never happened to me. Maybe they fixed the problem by the time they got to end of the system's life, who knows, but it works great.
"I can attest to the longevity of the system."
Of your system anyway. One of my friends went through 3 of these before just giving up. Man, everytime I hear about the Dreamcast I think of the new Bangai Oh.
@Iss: yea except the button layouts and the shape of the controller are similar, u cant say microsoft wasn't inspired at all by its design, couldn't be mere coincidence
@Masterpain22:
Hmm, perhaps it's not as common as I thought then. It was a real pain in the ass though...
I love my dc, best system ever. Unfortunately it got murdered by EA. Which was kind of a good thing because sega created the nfl2k series since they lacked madden.... unfortunately EA murdered that too..
Did peter moore have something to do with the xbox controller since he was employed under sega during the dc years?
What is this fetish people have with the Dreamcast? I have a Dreamcast and enjoyed it in its day, but there was nothing particularly spectacular about it.
When did Goodwill turn into ebay? What a scam that place is. They take these items as DONATIONS and sell them for profit. And not even a meager one anymore. The internet has even ruined thrift stores.
The mind set that our items are worth everything and yours are worth nothing has completely warped the concept of value in this country.
@Northernsky: It was fairly common but. Dreamcasts usually last a fairly decent time as long asyou don't play burned games on em
Hopefully with games like Street Fighter 4, fighting games will make some sort of comeback. Soul Calibur was amazing at the time.
@NessD12:
Does playing burned games make it worse? I've never done anything like that with my Dreamcast (same can't be said for my Xbox or PSP...)as I love it far too much!
I don't want to know the number of hours I spent playing PSO on that little 33.3k modem...
I even went to Yokosuka because I loved Shenmue so much...
...
That's it, I'm getting my Dreamcast out again tomorrow...
Oh Man. Memories of Street Fighter Alpha and Marvel vs. Capcom...Sword of the Berzerk...Ikaruga...yesss...
Say...
is there any reasons still, in 2008, to get the dreamcast?
Are the games that good? are the graphics still acceptable? (let's be honest, most N64 games are not fun anymore because they are hard to look at; same goes for ps1)
Because... under 100 for a brand new sealed system... max 30$ for a controller + memory.. and I think the system even accepts burned DVDs (or is it CDs). It would be a good deal, if it really is as good as everyone says.
any opinions?
Didn't care for it back in 1999. What makes you think I care for it now!
they have a sega cd system on the site too
On the off-chance that my DC ever dies, I made sure to have backups. I now own four of the consoles. Definitely one of the greatest consoles of all time.
My launch system still works perfectly and gets regular use!
@Nesagwa: You obviously have no clue what Goodwill is about. Try doing a bit of research before you shoot off your mouth. [www.goodwill.org]
I bought an old DC at a pawn shop while at my grandparents for $20. It runs great.
Side note: at the same pawn shop my cousin found and in box (had been opened) Atari Jaguar.
**found an
we need to be able to edit.
i'd wager a dollar that my dream cast still works. I enjoy the irony that while i'm pretty sure my dc is working fine and dandy, that my original xbox gave way a couple of years ago...f*ing RROD
of course to be fair, my xbox got used quiet a bit...though as a dvd player
i'm still peeved about that...it worked fine for a few years and then it clonked out...i would have loved to have installed that xbox media center on it..
There are about 20 new DC systems on Ebay right now. They are pretty much all from the same guy (who has been selling them forever), but his feedback is good.
I love my DC. Everyone here should have this system, it is a true gamers console.
Ah the 'ol Dreamcast, what could have been...
I was a store manager for FuncoLand when this thing released on 9/9/99. I'll never forget receiving our first demo unit a month or so before it launched, as the collective mouth of every person in the store dropped when Sonic Adventure booted up. NFL2K had the same effect.
Definitely the largest leap in graphic power between console generations.
@Sherlock_the_Barbarian:
it was ahead of its time in terms of hardware, but had terrible software (almost nothing but sport games)
(shrugs) interesting combo is all...
Ah. Years from now, a Goodwill in Peoria will run an auction for an NIB Xbox 360 and Hd dvd addon, and we will sigh long suffering sighs, and place our bids.
I love my dreamcast. Someday I need to get it from my old house and bring it up to college. Three months a year isn't enough!
@jabedoben: I dunno. Saturn / ps1 / 64 was pretty gigantic over the Genesis / SNES era.
Launch DC still working for me too, would be nice to get a backup thought in case the laser burns out or something. *resumes playing Skies of Arcadia*
new, used, really no difference for an optical drive-based system.
if you're interested in getting a DC, buy used, save money, and just clean the hand salsa off it with dish soap.
No idea what NIB stands for, but it makes a killer song.
Like Clara Peller said, "Where's the beef?!?". Just replace "beef" with "news".
Doesn't goodwill always have stuff like this? I usually see DC controllers there. I wonder why they just now decided to auction one of the thousands of retro consoles they see each year. Unless this dreamcast emits jedi mind tricks, forcing you to give everything you own to their store, but probably not.
how odd, my friend found a NIB dreamcast under his stairs the other day...
@bangbangblah:
The SNES / Genesis era is the reason most people play video games today.
