NBC's news and entertainment program Today has decided to get around to airing its late take on the Old People Like Playing Wii phenomenon that swept the nation at the end of 2006. In its "Forever Young" segment, which features old folks who are capable of jogging and smiling, it reveals that the aged quite enjoy virtual bowling between bouts of not being visited by their grandchildren. Hey old people! Stop snatching up all the Wiis! Some of us still haven't played Super Mario Galaxy thanks to your Wii Sports obsession!
I'm actually quite surprised that folks confined to retirement homes and elder care facilities aren't finding the orderly-killing simulation in Manhunt 2 more appealing than Wii bowling. Oh God, I'm so horribly depressed.

Erwin gets around to his "Only if he takes Cialis" joke.
Wii is the new Viagra.
"Oh God, I'm so horribly depressed." I loled.
I told some middle aged woman who told her son "don't you be 40 years old playing video games" cause she over heard me and some girl(both in our 20s) waxing poetically about vidya games,about the growing trend for games to be more appropriate for adults and sophisticated story lines are the thing of the future!
Ive just stopped watching morning news shows because of how slow they are at picking this kind of stuff
@Barbara:
Cept....old guys aren't playing the wii to get it....
Oh never mind.
"Hey Kids! It's so hip that your Grandparents LOVE IT!!!!"
As tiring as these stories get, I'm still so pleased to see gaming reach out to new demographies. Back in the SNES days there's no way I would have imagined whole communities of retirees getting their game on.
Everybody loves Wii.
@Barbara: XD
if i ever see my parents playin a current gen console my head will implode, then explode, then implode, then explode again...and divide by 0
And thats just one of the reasons why the Wii will go on to sell 150million units..
Fred rules.
almost every month a story about the Wii comes on the news
Good thing he didn't hit anyone in the face with that WiiMote and expose the dangerous side of the Wii.
enough wii on the news, please. They make it sound like wii sports isn't boring as hell now.
That woman is a fish.
The woman playing Zelda does not look old enough to have a 21 year old grandson.
My friends love Wii Sports Tennis when they're drinking. Smoke a cigar, hold a bevvy in one hand, and the Remote in the other. It's like a dream!
Actually everything in Wii Sports except Baseball I find good drinking games.
I hate Human Interest Pieces like this. Not because of the Wii (which is great), but because of the people who are "informing" America about it. A six year-old could give a better explanation.
"Okay, so who thought of the idea that something like the Wii game would be a way that, kind of... older Americans could get their game on?"
Just excruciating. Hota says that about as naturally as a hippie hosting an NRA rally. They really need to hire a gaming correspondent for moments like that.
I took the Wii to my parents over christmas and they just looked at it befuddled. But they aren't exactly tech savvy, they got their first DVD player at christmas and are still rocking the 15 year old TV set.
@Dragoonkin:
same case here
Fetch my Parents absolutely love their Nintendo Wii. My Dad is always bowling or playing Endless Ocean.
I can't wait to see how AWESOME videogames will be when we are that old!!!
"Seniors get their game ON"
-ugh, this hip to use hip-hop lingo is getting old fast.
@madhotch: This a video game blog in case you didn't notice.
Tha lady playing TP is doing it all wrong. She needs to flail her arms more.
"You can tell in his eyes"
She talks about him likes he's a dog or something. :/
"Oh look kids! Grandpa is on national TV playing with his wii"
...yeah i know...these jokes are getting old but I just coulnt resist
seems like a big wii commericial. still, good for nintendo and good for old people.
"Old People Like Playing Wii phenomenon that swept the nation at the end of 2006."
This is like the 4th segment they've done on the Wii.
You do realize the phenomenon didn't stop in 2006 right? It's still happening. It's out of control.
BOWLING ZELDA.
The Wii is way too overrated, though it is nice to see the age range expanding.
I think seniors getting time to play with a Wii and enjoying it is great. Imagine the void this can fill for so many people that are alone. Social involvement + physical activity that can easily vary according to your abilities? Pure win.
I hope more retirement homes can get the funds to add a Wii or two to their facilities, I also hope they have a good surplus of depends for the inevitable 'omg! i pee'd myself!' and 'oops! I just shit my pants laughing!' moments.
Where have you been Kotaku? Today Show always talks about the Wii, especially for old people.
@thegetupkid: Well...
We wont be able to play them very well, unless they are played with mind control, in which case patients with Alzheimer's disease will have trouble with fetch quests and those that have succumbed to dementia will have trouble controlling the camera.
lol the guys isn't wearing the strap...
You know why the Today show always features the Wii? Nintendo World is right next door to the studio.
Is it 2006 again?
hmm well thats odd my parents hate the wii
A GAMER LEAGUE FOR 70+ year olds?! *tears*
Can't believe Im seeing this.
Bravo Nintendo, Bravo.
I laughed when they called Twilight Princess "another game, or something"
Old people smell funny.
@Sherlock_the_Barbarian: Working up a sweat from Wii Bowling only makes it worse.
To give this one credit, that woman was playing Twilight Princess, and most of these news programs only show Wii Sports. Although, she didn't look very "elderly" at all...
We once set up my eighty-seven year old Grandma up with Guitar Hero 3 for Wii. That was pretty intense. She played Slow Ride on Easy, and had to say each colour as it came up: "green, green, yellow, red". It's hard to imagine her playing Through the Fire and the Flames on Expert, shouting out the colours of the notes as they flew towards her:
"greengreenorangeblueyellowgreenredbluegreenorange!!!"
It was fun to watch her try and do star power...
There is also a video:

If seiniors wanted to relive old experiences, they should pick up a 360 and get Call of Duty 2.
It's even better because this is what Nintendo planned to do. Good for them.
I'm so tired of the old people ruining gaming for us. Haha.
"and lynn is playing another game... with... fishing or something... oh zelda!"
that cracked me up! how long would it take to ask what game it was before she was on air?
@Morlun: Heh, thanx for the video. That was great.
Im tired.
