Back. It. Up. Yesterday, Konami's American PR said that the version of Metal Gear Solid 1 included in the upcoming Metal Gear compendium would be shipping on a PS2 disc. Turns out that was a load of rubbish. The game will be shipping on two PS1 discs, just like it always has. Kojima Productions producer Ryan Payton tells us:
This is totally false and I want to make sure everybody is clear that the MGS1 package is two PS1 CDs.
Consider yourselves not just corrected, but correctly informed.
Metal Gear Solid Not A PS2 Port [GameAlmighty]

Comments
Lame! I don't have a PS1 memory card anymore.
Well that does explain how they are gonna get it to work with non BC PS3s. See 40gbers you have nothing to fear. That being said, I am enjoying my 60gb.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN): so am I
i wonder if you can save it onto the harddrive. I don't have my ps1 memory cards...actually wait, i know where they are. if you can save it to the harddrive, i'll just transfer the data to it.
@jun581: Yeah, you can create a PS1 and PS2 "memory card" on your hard drive. I think I have about 4 Ps2 ones in mine right now.
Well that sucks. I don't have any PS1 memory cards either.
Is this even coming out here?
@KingBroly:
If by "here" you mean the US, then yes, it's coming out March 18th: [www.amazon.com]
@Balance_In_Life (PSN): Me too
Reading all these olde-MGS-related posts, one question springs to mind:
WHICH ONE OF YOU DOESNT ALREADY OWN every major MGS chapter?
@jun581: @Balance_In_Life (PSN): Yeah, I have 3 PS1 memory cards and 2 PS2 memory cards on my HDD.
Basically I bought a crapton of games that I personally enjoyed during the lifespan of the PS1 and PS2. Man... we used to call the PS1 a PSX, lmfao.
I'm only 21, but I still feel old for remembering that.
Ok... well that's cool and all but when is it coming out? And is MGS2 going to have skipable cutscenes?
I own them and on a recent playthrough 1 & 2 were starting to skip so it is nice to have a backup copy, especially at 35$ that is a crazy good deal.
@The Dark Defender: Sorry for the double post... but I own MGS2 and MGS3, the originals, not S and SS.
That's why I'm stupid happy to hear about this being relaunched because, as much as I love playing this game on my PSP, it just doesn't do it justice (especially after you beat Sniper Wolf for the 2nd time and have to swap discs... or eboots in my case).
Sucks.
@The Dark Defender: I've never owned a MGS game.
...!!!!
Bah, another post because I love MGS so much.
This set is actually $30-ish dollars for 5 games, not 3.
Of course it includes the MGS saga from 1 to 3, but it also includes the original NES titles that launched the game and pretty much proceeds the game after MGS3.
Too bad this little set doesn't include Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. Then it would REALLY be in order.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN): Well actually, they do -- considering that MGS2 and 3 won't work on the 40 gig models.
I may actually pick this one up though (I have a 60 gig model), but I seriously doubt that I'll actually play though any of the games again (way too many games on backlog).
MGS on PS1 cd in ps3 is best option because it looks pixel perfect via HDMI HDTV (I have 60 gb ps3). All ps2 cd/dvds in ps3 still does not achieve that pixel perfect image :(. So be glad MGS is still on PS1 cd(s).
My local Gamestop sells PS1 memory cards for a buck or two each... maybe you PS2 owners can find some similar deal?
@superbeast1370: me too :D
Unfortunate that Nintendo is clearly being dicktards again. Twin Snakes is a ridiculously superior version of MGS1, probably looking better than MGS2. MGS1 graphics wise is kind of out of place among the other 3, particularly given that they are actually shipping it on PS1 CDs? Did they have enough of a stash that they decided to save them for a rerelease, or do they actually have a factory still equipped to make those silly black CDs?
Those black CDs are ANCIENT. The PC version of FF7 is over a gigabyte because the technology used on those CDs was so inefficient. I'm honestly surprised they remember how to make them at all, much less have the ability to.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN): However 40 Gb's won't be able to play MGS2 on their PS3...
Dammit, I recently had my PS2...uh..."updated," and now every time I stick a PS1 game in it the colors get messed up.
Huurrrrrh.
@BobbyMcPresscott: The Twin Snakes is way too easy with the enchancements though, and the cut scenes are kind of lame.
Matrix Gear Solid.
The original is still the superior version.
@PirateThom: I second that. They took out Nastasha's outragously Russian accent too.
@BobbyMcPresscott: Uh, actually, those "black" CD's are actually regular CD-Roms with black plastic (or technically dark purple) used instead of clear plastic for aesthetic reasons. And yes, they still make CD-Roms (most PC games were still on CD-Rom disks until a couple years ago).
I wouldn't be surprised if MGS came out on regular sliver CD-Rom disks though, just to save some money on printing costs.
I don't mind, I do have a working memory card I recently bought for the PS1... but it's weird decision anyway, considering most people don't have a PS1 memory card (let alone one that still works). But look at it on the bright side, it's not like it's a very long game. :P
Oh, for anyone attempting to play MGS1 without a memory card, when Ocelot says there's no continues during the torture bit... HE'S NOT FUCKING KIDDING.
What can I say except I totally called this in the comments last night, except I spelled Ryan Payton's name wrong.
@GregoriusH: No memory card run. Now there's a hardcore challenge. Or just a good excuse to give up on Meryl.
@Balance_In_Life (PSN): i actually have 3 ps2 games. I never done it for any of my PS1 files. Logic dictates it should've worked anyway. But i just wanted to verify that. Thanks.
So what's the problem again? I have 60gigger. I can play mgs1 on the ps3 right?...and save game data on the hard drive...just like the ps3 stuff. I mean I don't need to transfer memory or anything.
@GregoriusH: Pfft, someones not up to their circle jamming skills. Or select button, for that matter. XD
I'm for it. I still got my PS1. At least I don't have to eBay the game.
Honestly, MGS:Twin Snakes by Silicon Knights is much more playable than the original PS1 version. The graphics are very similar to those of MGS2 and since it's a Gamecube game, you can get it for your Wii.
Personally, I can barely stand to look at even "good looking" PS1 games, as the lack of texture filtering and problems with polygon swimming are pretty atrocious in any game. However, if you've never played the original, it's kind of amusing to see what "cutting edge" graphics and gameplay looked like circa 1995.
@Brendar:
TTS is also horribly, horribly, broken and easy. Due to the addition of the first-person aiming mechanic and tranq gun, but the enemy paths and alert cones are still single-level. So you can literally stand at a high point and tranq everyone in the room, and just go on your merry way. The voice direction is worse than the original, and the cutscenes are a bit more campy.
@SnakeCL:
Also from an artistic and nostalgic standpoint Twin Snakes doesn't do anything for me, where as MGS1 still blows my mind
@SolidOni_ds:
The changed the soundtrack as well, definitely for the worse. "The Best is Yet to Come" and the various snippets played throughout the game was one of the best things of the original.
Well that just plain blows.
And here I was 'hoping' to get a Twin Snakes port.
Shucks! *snaps finger, kicks dust, cries*
>.>
Is this the same thing as Metal Gear Solid Essentials? If not, how is Essentials shipping? The same way? It doesn't really matter either way, but I preordered mine last month. Am I going to get 3 ps2 disks, or 2 ps2, 2 ps1?
If the PS1 keeps selling the way it has been this'll probably just get ported to 64 anyway.
You can buy PS1 memory cards for $5 at EB or look around for the Third Party ones. Just buy it ahead of time before the mad rush for PS1 cards start at the used shops or ebay.
KingDavid73 The Essentials collection will have:
PS1 Metal Gear Solid on 2 disks
PS2 Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance on 1 disk
PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence on 1 disk
@xMaverick:
I would be much happier if they just included MGS:Integral instead of hte original MGS.
This is a major disappointment to me as it would have been the first time in an American market anyone would be able to play the extra features (such as an FPS mode, extra difficulties, built-in VR-missions, etc...).
Konami included the "director's cut" versions of MGS2 and 3 in the collection, and Japan recieved a much more extra-laden collection including MGS:Integral; why can't other countries have the option?
That would have made it an "essential" collection. =(
...
/continues fuming over lack of EE chips in PS3s.
I'll echo most of the above players, Twin Snakes on GC was the inferior version in pretty much all ways but graphics. The voice and cutscene direction was inferior not to mention the lack of gamesaves for psycho mantis to read off your memory card.
What is with all this apparent mis-information coming out about all things MGS?
Summary: listen to the Kojima productions report for the offical word. Ryan Payton never lies.
And I have a very hard time believing that people don't still have PS1 memory cards laying around.
@RPGr: Psycho Mantis did read games off your memory card in Twin Snakes.
All I know is that it's gonna be a hell of a lot easier to take down Psycho Mantis.
*uses PS button to switch ports*
Hell yes! MGS1 on remote play. I'm all over it son.
I was hoping for the full download on the PSN
but this will do.
No problem I still got all my Playstation systems.
This. Is. Bullshit.
That's all I got.
@Arttemis: Yeah, I lamented the same thing in the MGS1 post the other day. Integral had all the cut-scenes in English and had English subtitles in the options, so it's not as if the game would have needed any re-working to include in the set... Thankfully I bought Integral on eBay last year and converted it to run on my PSP. :D
I can't believe Metal Gear Solid 3 isn't going to have the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 on it!
Why aren't they just avoiding all the issues of memory and backwards compatability by making some bug fixes and modifying it so that all the games are on a single Blu Ray disc. It totally removes all the issues at once, and saves the buyer time and space.
Also, I just bought MGS Twin Snakes a few months ago, guess I'm buying it for the other 2 games plus the ability to play it with a PlayStation controller like it was originally meant to, although I heard some features of MGS2 were added to 1 in Twin Snakes, if that's removed, it's a bit of a let down.
For the last goddamn time, you DO NOT NEED A PS1 memory card! You can create as many memory cards as you want--or at least 40/60/80GB worth--on your HDD. No physical mem cards are needed.
