I am strangely intrigued by this Speed Racer video game, probably because I'm strangely intrigued with the cartoon and anything trying to leech of its decades-old popularity. Oh and you can drive a car that jumps stuff, full-on win.

Big cup of meh
This cant be speed racer! The voices arent corny enough! ;D
Oh how I do miss the original series, since it was so awesome.
THATWASNOTSOAWESOMEIWOULDRATHEREATCEREALTHANPLAYTHAT-WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
Why does the game have a better trailer than the movie?
Looks like they've transformed it into one of those filthy cheap Hot Wheels games :S This preview is also in need of the classic song.
Do they still talk super duper fast in the movie like in the old show? As if they were on some kind of speed^n?
Anyway looks crazy, like F-Zero GX but with wheels.
And Witzbold if it's going to be like F-Zero GX, it's going to be extremely cheesy. =P
Why does my mind keep flashing the words "Bomberman Zero" in my head when I look at this?
My first thought was "those graphics aren't very good". Then I saw Wii and DS at the end. OK, that makes sense.
Looks A LOT like some of the trippier tracks in F-Zero GX (one of my most beloved games.)
Does this remind anyone else of Extreme-G Racing?
I think I'll pass on this one.
Why does my mind keep flashing the words "bomberman Zero" when I look at this?
GOOO Faster~! Speed racer you just seem to be out of gas.
This has nothing to do with the original, haha!
I hope they can returnittoitsformerglory and surprise me!
Then and only then will I buy this crap and become the greatest racer ever knooown!
@Modus_Operandi:
I suffered the same symptom
@Dr.Chocobo: "In this world you've got to be strong..."
I am so going to just press the jump button over and over and over again if they use the awesome sound effect that was in the original.
+ Watch video
You can hear it around 1:24-25ish.
@Zerozaki Ishiki: Agreed, the movie looks so bad in the trailer that it gave me cancer.
i hadn't seen a trailer for the movie. now i can be sure that the movie will be about as true to form as the transformers and godzilla. hollywood should give lessons on how to ruin imported intellectual properties. it's almost an art itself.
Does it come with the wii wheel?
I'd be interested in it if it's more about competing and getting the upper hand on your rivals and less about falling off the edge. I hate falling off the edge of stuff ...
@Indrajit: My first thought was of Extreme-G, actually. I think I'm the only person who actually loved those games. Still have every one of 'em. Hell, look at my avatar, for crying out loud. :)
@Witzbold: Ahh, the famous echoing "chawchawchaw"...
@jayntampa: I wanted railings that I go crashing through then explode in an over exaggerated ball of fire all while being tossed from the car before it all happens! ;D
Is anyone else bothered that they changed it to the Mach 6 instead of the Mach 5? I mean, how can you get that wrong??? Plus that screws the movie up for the Japanese audience, considering that the show is called Mach GO GO GO there, the word "go" meaning "five".
Is that Matthew Fox? He'll do the Speed Racer game, but not the Lost game.
The Wachowskis must have contracted him good and proper.
That explains why it looks so bad: it's on the Wii & DS! I don't want to sound I'm hating on these systems-I love them!-but it seems like third parties always push their crap on Nintendo's systems. Only Nintendo's first party games do well consistently. I still remember the cutscenes from Speed Racer on the PS1 based off of the original cartoon; it had the theme song and it looked just like the show. I never played the game, but I'm sure it was faithful to the source material, yet the game sounds to me like another average racing game. And this new one is from Warner Bros. Games(?!), the same people that made the horrible Matrix games, including Matrix Online. I have a horrible feeling that they'll mess this up too, and if the movie itself is bad, then there will be millions of dollars wasted and millions of people's childhoods dumped on!
Yeah the grahics sucks...but I guess it's next gen for the wii and ds.
@Cogito: Just thinking about Extreme-G Racing with "jumping" (and all the other wacky antics of Speed Racer) already gives me a headache, especially taking into account the absurd difficulty of Extreme-G on higher levels.
This game could either be really entertaining, or seizure inducing. I'm leaning towards the later.
@Witzbold: Now THAT I'm ok with ... because it's cool. Just falling sucks. I mean, come on, it's a super car -- it should have a safety system to prevent you from plummeting -- even if it does slow you down.
Basiclly its a limited version of TrackMania [www.trackmanianations.com] but twice the cost and watered down.
Where do I sign up!
:\
i dont recall speed racer ever racing on floating platforms... Everything here screams F-Zero resemblance.
In relevant news, who is making this game again?
...because it's easy to see how it will turn out if we know who are the poor bastards with the hands on this license.
Er...I don't see any cars jumping over eachother...I see some goofy effects used for the video, but nothing that indicates the cars can jump.
Unless the original Speed Racer could do that and I just don't remember >_>
I really hope the game has loops on the track, since Id like to experiment what happens when you are at the peak of the loop then press the jump button! ;D
I dunno. I thought that the trailer was pretty bad-ass.
Wait, there is a movie? O.o
That definitely sounds like Matthew Fox
As much as I want to like this guy, it really doesn't look that good. Then again, I doubt any of that was gameplay footage.
There's still hope!
@Xaltmas: The Wachowsky(sp?) brothers are doing it.
game looks dumb, movie looks dumb but i am sure it will do well because people have themselves convinced it was a good show..ahhh the effect of group think and pop culture.
So, Crecente, since cars that jump are cool, I'd like to know your opinion of KITT and the General Lee, though the latter could only jump via ramp.
@ Witzbold:
How did you find the Japanese version of Speed Racer? The opening song was awesome! I love the "GO GOGO GO / GO GOGO GO / GO GOGO GO GOOOOO!" I also saw the VW commercial, it was even better! I remember seeing it on TV, maybe during the Super Bowl one year.
HOORAY NOSTALGIA!!!
Whenever a futuristic racer comes out, it inevitably draws comparisons to others of its ilk (F-Zero, Wipeout, Extreme-G, even Trackmania to a lesser extent, as dadeisvenm already said). While I myself am partial to Extreme-G (the first one especially, but XGRA was sweet as well) I nevertheless always wonder why future-racers are always so scrutinized against others like them. Perhaps because the genre is so small, with so few franchises, that each is percieved as a clone of the last? Who knows.
Never was a speed racer fan, but I always liked reimaginings of classic tales. I can appreciate the nostalgia, while at the same time appreciate the improvements. I'm actually intriuged by this game, and that's something for a Speed Racer game (as I said, not a fan).
Now if you'll excuse my I'm going to go back to designing custom XGRA bikes in Lightwave. Someday I'll be able to import them to Trackmania United. (Damn you Nadeo and your un-decompileable file formats!) :)
I still think that a hamster jet fighter pilot is better.
@Indrajit: I thought of it too. I know what I will be doing when I get home today.
I know someone who will cry when they catch wind of this and the movie adaption; but I rather not tell him and let him waste his money on the movie and then come to tell me about it, then I will laugh in his face. It will be the best birthday present evar!
Not gonna lie, the movie trailer was super badass, the game trailer.. not so much.
btw, Emile Hirsch as Speed = Win
@dawimp523: Long time ago friend brought it to Hawaii from Japan on VHS.
I had watched the dubbed version from VHS tapes I bought in Utah a long time ago on a family vacation. It was combined on the same tape with another animated show called The Mighty Hercule
+ Watch video
I'm surprised no one here caught this, but the car says "6" on it.
Well it shouldn't... it's the Mach 5 for crying out loud... get the damned thing right :(
@Cogito: IIRC, Speed Racer never had tracks like that, they were pretty standard in the show. I suppose you can say this is emulating the movie (which it obviously is), but as a game it feels kind of....rehashed from better racers of the same ilk.
@Witzbold: I really want all the voices in both the game and movie to be about a half-second off-sync with their mouth movements (much love for the english translation) and for everyone to talk like they're on 12 cups of coffee. That all seemed way to damn serious for the ridiculousness of Speed Racer.
MACH MACH GO GO!
@Meldy: Wow took the words right out of my mouth. As soon as I saw this trailer I thought "Why is Matthew Fox lending his voice to Speed Racer, but not Lost?" Guess he got a nice paycheck.
Anyways, the movie looks like it will be really amazing or really crappy, but I'm leaning towards awesomeness. The Wachowskis seem to be sticking true to a lot of Speed Racers originalness (corny voice acting aside) and it looks quite good. Just my two cents.
<~~~~~ . Nuff said
So it's only for the Wii and DS? Trailer looked cool and was hoping it was for 360 or PS3 so it could at least come anywhere close to the video...
