New Silent Hill V Screens Suitably Foggy

Silent Hill is alive and well in the hands of California developer The Collective, who prove with these screenshots that they have suitably captured the city's trademark fog. The highest praise I can give these screens, which come in both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 flavors without any noticeable difference, is that they certainly look like Silent Hill screenshots, with spooky interiors and just the right amount of gore as to not be pretentious. Can you be pretentious about gore? If I were a goresmith I'm sure I could find a way.

  • You call that a Knoife.....

  • I still say this game will be horrible, and we'll look back on it as the downfall of the series, with the heart and soul completely removed and replaced with set parts from older games and the movies.

  • One thing I noted is bathrooms always look the same, in every modern game. Always the same amount of dirtiness to them. Like there's a standard for how dirty a bathroom should be.

    Everything else looks nice.

  • The more I see of this game, the more I'm looking forward to this game. That strip of blood going under the doors in the picture? You just know you'll have to walk into that room and see what bleeding being got pulled in there and who did the pulling and you just know it will be scary as hell. This one could do what 3 and 4 couldn't -- live up to the second.

I love Silent Hill, and the pics look good ... but, I have to ask -- Why are there always dead bodies (usually torsos) next to toilets in SH? I mean ... it's to the point if I see a screenshot of a corpse near a toilet, I know it's a Silent Hill game.

  • Not bloody, rustic, dark or foggy enough in my opinion. It does look good at some points like when he has the light shining on the zombie dog but ultimately I'm dissapointed.

  • The Collective have made some decent games in the past but why exactly are they making the Silent Hill game? This should be handled with the utmost care by Konami Japan. If we learned anything from American companies remaking/working on J-Horror movies it's to NOT LET AMERICAN COMPANIES WORK ON J-HORROR.

  • Can't wait for this game...it really needs to step it up this time cuz i want it be like 1,2,and 3 ( loved it so much that i repeatly played it)and not like 4( hated it so much that I stopped playing and never finished the game)

  • Discussed already on /v/,
it's better that those are just really early experiments for their engine, nextgen machines can push a lot more the game environements, maybe they have to take a look at the last Alone In The Dark trailers?

Sorry to say this, but It really doesn't feel like a SH like this.

  • It's lookin' alright. I'm anxious to see if they screwed the series up or not. I love me some Silent Hill baby.

  • This might be the game that forces me to get a next -gen console.

    Hope it comes to PC.

  • @AkumaX: Calm down. I'm sure they'll do a good job. Just look at Contents Under Pressure :P

  • @jayntampa:

That's a good question. Were there a lot of junkies shooting up in the bathroom and having accidental overdoses in Silent Hill? Corpses next to a toilet is an odd thing to have your franchise associated with. I suppose the rationale is dirty toilet = gross. Corpse next to dirty toilet? = grosser.

    @Sloopydrew:

You can tell from the blood trail whatever it was had/has arms since there are three distinct trails. Probably a dead or unconscious human dragged by their feet.

Yeah, I watch too much CSI.

SH2 scared the shit out of me so badly i stopped laying it and never picked up a SH since... so i wont be grabbing this one :P

  • This is a must have title for my 360, I hope it makes it out this year, along with RE5!

  • @Winterbringer: What are you talking about? This game won't be remembered as the downfall of the series. Origins is already out.

  • @AkumaX: You should look up the interviews with the Collective on that topic. They presented a real convincing plan to Konami about how big of a fan they were of the game and a real nice looking demo of how they wanted it to look. I think they will handle it well. It's always good for something as big as the Silent Hill franchise to be taken over from a new perspective before it gets old and moldy.

  • I'm not to fond of the story or what they have of it.

Makes me wonder why Jesus ever went AFK on the series...

  • Silent Hill V had better be good. That's one of the few gaming series that I still keep up with because every installment is win. SHIV wasn't that great but it had an awesome story. Haven't played Origins yet though I hear it's a mess just as any horror game on a PSP would be.

Anyways, these screens look meh... I want more alternate Silent Hill and there is too much influence from the film in those screens which was influenced by the style of Silent Hill 3. We'll see where it goes but this game will never stand up to the first three and especially 2.

  • Ugh, this is why I can't play silent hill. The games are good, they just scared the living HELL out of me. And the ambiance in this game... geez... i won't sleep for a month.

  • I'm very interested in this game. Looks great. Right now some of the environment texturing and modelling looks kind of meh, especially that office scene, but everything else looks wonderful. Love the enemy design in the final picture.

  • There's too much light on those screenshots. I would like a eerier environment and lots of fog..... that'll do.

  • Graphics look good in some pictures and truly awful in other pictures.
Mainly the one with the dog jumping at him where it is already on him.
And the shot from behind of him running down an empty road. In fact that screenshot looks worse than some last gen games. His back is basically a brown slab.

With such heavy fog I would hope they could make the graphics truly amazing. They will only ever have to render small environments.

Graphically the two versions look identical. Put two of the same screenshots in different tabs and switch between them and there are literally 0 changes.

  • Silent Hill is in a very precarious position. The developers (and players) want new stuff, some innovation. But, deviating from the tried-and-true Silent Hill formula (deserted town, mutated creatures, lots of fog, etc.) will cause uproar and dislike among said gamers. So how can they make something new and fresh that isn't new and fresh? Granted, I love the original Silent Hill and the second one, but I wonder how much more can they do with the same setting? Resident Evil finally started to get away from Raccoon City, but like a recovering crack addict, the series keeps wanting to creep back for more.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 10:17 AM on 02/28/08 *

I sincerely hope this turns out good. SH is my favorite horror game franchise, and I would hate to see it get killed off with another sub-par sequel.

On the bright side, we at least know the soundtrack will be worth the price of admission, unless Yamaoka suddenly lost every ounce of talent he has.

  • @Zim:

"With such heavy fog I would hope they could make the graphics truly amazing. They will only ever have to render small environments."

    Agreed.

  • @ShaggE:

You know damn well that Yamaoka will keep it real.

  • Alone in the Dark 5 is already kicking the shit out of this. Still, I hope SH5 is good. I'm willing to give tehm a chance. The only thing I really miss is the character design of the last 2 games. It just gave SH it's own style and feel that this doesn't offer.

  • Oh god... beautiful!!

  • See I wouldn't be able to finish this game because I wouldn't be able to go through the demon vagina door just on principle. Check pic #4.

  • Looks. Okay. I need to see it in motion

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 10:23 AM on 02/28/08 *

@dead_red_eyes: Definitely. It's funny, I think the music is actually my favorite part of each game. They're also the only game soundtracks I can listen to out of context without someone asking me what the hell I'm listening to. :P

  • Can't wait, my PS3 has been waiting patiently for a Silent Hill.

  • why do i get a Game Cube Resident Evil 4 feeling when i see the screens?

  • Doesn't quite have the grittiness I expect from Silent Hill quite yet, but the game isn't scheduled until much later this year.

So there's plenty of time to add some grain and dirty that mother up.

  • @AkumaX: "If we learned anything from American companies remaking/working on J-Horror movies it's to NOT LET AMERICAN COMPANIES WORK ON J-HORROR.

It isnt even based on J-horror. The devs said it was influenced by Jacobs Ladder (american film) and films from the director, David Lynch (american). There's no J-horror connection. They also said it made more sense for an American to do this type of game since he was trying to go for a more western theme horror feel.

  • that is one good looking game, I have always loved this series

  • I haven't finished Origins yet, but I'm not hating it as much as everyone else seems to. I do find the breakable weapons to be a huge pain in the ass (and I loved Yahtzee's line about having a coat that fits 36 portable televisions), but it's definitely scaring me enough that I only play it in small doses.

I'm hoping this comes out on the heels of a PS3 price drop and after the Blu-Ray 2.0 spec is implemented for the PS3 in a perfect harmonic convergence.

  • I enjoy origins a lot more than I thought I would, but if it was silent hill 5 I'd be disappointed at it not pushing the series. I realize a lot of people didn't like 4, and even with it's flaws I consider it the second best story in the series.
Everything I've seen and heard from this team so far makes me think that Winterbringer is correct.

I will still buy it. But I imagine it will be like making a prostitute wear the wig and your dead wife's dress.

  • @AkumaX: i don't think they're trying to make a japanese-horror type game, they're trying to sell out the franchise and this is guaranteed to be by far the worst in the series. the collective have never made a good game and yet konami hands one of their most successful franchises over to them?
just look up the monster concepts for this game (such as 2x4 head - pyramid head with a plank of wood nailed to his face, or a snake with a baby's head) and you'll realise how badly this game is going to fail in every possible way.

  • DO WANT!!!

  • I just yawned so huge my jaw broke.

  • Game will be mostly crap, IMO.

  • Ugh. Silent Hill needs a MATTE finish.

    Gloss FTL.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:39 AM on 02/28/08 *

Im going to hold all comments until I see the thing in motion.

Ok maybe Ill make 2 comments.

1: They BETTER NOT ADD PYRAMID HEAD or any look alike.
2: The arms / hands for a head monster is kinda interesting.

  • @NoBullet: There's a big difference between Western horror and Western horror as interpreted by Japan though!
@chucklebuck: I'm enjoying 0rigins myself too. Personally I like the weapons breaking, although it's a bit silly that a katana has the same lasting power as a broken off piece of a flimsy wooden fence! I don't dislike it as much as everyone else, being a big SH fan and the fact that it's a portable game (which everyone else seems to have disregarded) allowed me to give it a wide berth.

Anyway, those screenshots still aren't looking good. I hear there might be... quicktime events. -_- Sneaking through an abandoned sanitorium, seeing veins pulsate through the walls, hearing a nearby scuttle or groan, then all of a sudden, a giant flashing X appears onscreen. No!

  • They call this SH fog??? They should try playing SH1 for reference...or at least some of the original SH games. <_<

    @AkumaX: Agree.
There were like 2 games that you could call "decent": "Marc Ecos Getting up" (which imho sucked) and "Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb" with was just an "ok" game. Beside those exceptions they have horrible games record, with games like "The Da Vinci Code" on it. Well even if they've had only AAA games on their list, i doubt that they would have managed to get the atmosphere, characters, design and the story right...
J-horror should be handled by japanese guys, what Climax did to SH:Origins clearly showed that. :(

  • @NoBullet: Unfortunately, I can see the Japanese really liking what Gans did and what this team is doing, the irony is they both ruin what I like about the series. The series was also heavily influenced by the Mist, the stephen king short, now a movie, and yet if Stephen King touched silent hill it would be ruined.
Was SK's version of Lars Van Trier's the Kingdom good? I wouldn't expect it to be. I recommend LVT the Kingdom for those that like more 'offbeat' 'horror', like Lynch and Silent Hill.

  • Brown Jacket, Blonde Hair, Knives, Guns, Jumping Dogs and dark lighting. Resident Evil 4?

  • The stuff on the desk looks great!

  • Image of Sigma-D Sigma-D at 10:45 AM on 02/28/08 *

Now THIS is what I've been waiting for.

  • @KaliKOtt: Brown Jacket, Knives, Guns, Jumping Dogs, Dark Lighting=Silent Hill 1. It's easy to do that when you just strip it down to it's bare elements.

@Ehardergardens: Yes Kingdom Hospital was great. I haven't seen The Kingdom however, just been urged to by many.

I'm 'cautiously optimistic' to overuse a hideous phrase. Everyone was annoyed that Konami outsourced it, but if the game turns out to be brilliant then we'll all just dance the macarena around the fandango of life.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:49 AM on 02/28/08 *

@Ehardergardens: I dont know about that. Since the folks here prefer the more psychological horror over the BOO kind that the US produces.

The SH movie was far from being psychological horror.

  • @AkumaX: Well Team Silent has stated that Silent Hill was their take on a j-horrors take of a western horror. So in a way this game will be a western take on a j-horror's take of a western horror.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:57 AM on 02/28/08 *

@P-Sheddy: We all know how western take on J horror turns out.

    *cough* THE GRUDGE *cough*

    ;D

  • @Witzbold: I would hope and think not.. but there are those that have affinity for western culture in the east, just as there are fans of japanese culture in the west.
Meaning that Silent Hill definitely was influenced by western (good though) psychological 'horror' and that Konami oversaw the film and said they were satisfied, and I expect they are ok with SHV as well. In their minds they could feel that they failed to make silent Hill western enough and Gans and the collective will achieve that.

  • These screenshots look great, and nothing about them, or anything else that has been revealed about the game would give any objective person a reason to start jumping to the conclusion that this game will be bad.

Prior to all the sweeping judgments and absurd criticisms, I think at least one of us should play the game.

  • Here's an interview with the developers of the game, explaining how they got the deal from Konami, among other things.

I like where this is going.
