More Alone In The Dark Tech In Action

The technology Eden Games has integrated into their forthcoming Alone in the Dark continues to impress the hell out of me. From their first installment of their Real World Rules video series, which showed how various objects can be intuitively combined to create weapons and gadgets, to this second episode, which highlights object manipulation on a somewhat larger scale. I particularly love the notion of a health spray that can be used to heal, blind enemies, or be combined with your lighter to create a flamethrower. It might be a long way from fighting undead pirates in a Victorian mansion, but this new AitD could wind up being something just as exciting as the original.

  • This games lookin pretty sweet

  • Neato! I dig the subtle manipulation of objects. Can't wait to see what kind of physics-based puzzles they can create with this tech.

  • I had a chance to play the game it is looking good, check out my blog for a full preview :D
    [gamerhobo.blogspot.com]

  • I'm not so sure I'd ever use an ignited chair as a torch...

  • This game made it to my top 5 anticipated games of the year.

  • Must admit this looks amazing. Amazing in a groundbreaking kind of way.

  • Im hoping you can hotkey some of these improvized weapons and items. I dont know how much crap you can carry, but it might get monotonous taping your 500th lightbulb.

  • @HoboGamer:

Were you at the London offices last Thursday?

If so, I was there too, nice write up there mate, you got everything in there.

  • i like how the right stick works as swinging your weapon. hopefully the movement responds to exactly where the stick is. meaning if the stick is up, but not all the way up, the weapon will be that height as well.

  • @HoboGamer: I reckon there is no rule agianst plugging your own blog on someone elses blog but...come on.

  • umm... so when does this come out so I can buy the fuckin' shit out of it?

  • Very cool again - I'm getting more and more impressed with this game. I reckon I could just have fun with the engine even if the game is shite.

Though there didn't seem to be much problem in holding a flaming chair as the flames licked around his fingers...

  • atari has sunk so much money into this title, it needs to sell huuuuge to recoup.

I feel bad for eden games, in a way, since much of atari's future is squarely on their shoulders. thats a tough spot to be in as a developer.

Man the dude with the pipe at the start so reminded me of the starwars kid.

Ok holding a burning chair while cool, I do hope they make it so he drops it if held too long. Since heat causes some serious discomfort.

The physics with the gun hitting stuff is cool, but a pistol denting a metal door that thick kinda disturbs me.

Man this is just too awesome of a game engine though. I really like how much can be done with it so far. I just hope that they fill the world with enough objects that there can be multiple solutions to situations in the game, instead of leaving certian things in certian places so you are pretty much forced to use it in a single way.

How the burnt table broke to pieces too was excellent.

Very good video though! Really looking foward to the next one.

  • Hobo: Nice write up. Bit lengthy thou.

    @Thassodar:
    *puppyeyes* awwwww~

  • WOW that looks great and it was just a tech demo. i never got into the AITD series but after seeing this video i would enjoy playing this.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:09 AM on 02/27/08 *

    @Thassodar: Actually there is.

But since he seems to not be pimping his blog everywhere looking at his history so this instance of self pimpage might be ok.

  • Looks like they're giving Bioshock a run for their money.

  • Image of ShaggE ShaggE at 10:11 AM on 02/27/08 *

    Color me hyped.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:12 AM on 02/27/08 *

@Garro: This by far already beats bioshock quite personally in terms of technology with the gameplay mechanics.

  • @MURDERFACE:

you should check out the first tech demo too. It was linked on here earlier...

  • @Witzbold: He will drop the chair if held too long. It causes burns to his hands. The devs just haven't implemented it, according to Hobo.

Also, the door thing could happen, depending on the type and state of the metal door and the calibur of the bullets hitting it.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:15 AM on 02/27/08 *

@Witzbold: I wonder how reactive are objects in the game. For example you set a bottle of flammable liquid on the chair then set the chair on fire with another object. Will the that is sitting on the chair explode also?

Same question with making a trail of fire using the flammable liquid then placing the bottle at the end of the trail in a puddle of the liquid and igniting the starting point of the trail.

  • This game looks like it has some amazing potential. I'm loving these "real world rules". I don't expect everything they're doing to be perfect and turn out exactly as I'd like, but they are doing a great job of making me interested in their game. This was not a purchase originally in my book as I'm not a huge fan of the survival/horror type genre, but this just looks too fun to pass up.

  • This looks to be a very exciting title. By the time this is released I am not going to have time to play all of the fantastic games coming to PC. Can't wait to give it a try though ;)

  • @Witzbold:
Especially as the blog explains some of the stuff in the video. I just read it.
Thassodar, I don't understand the point of your post. If Kotaku don't like it leave it up to them to say something.

  • I can't wait for this game. I just hope they take their time to bring the PS3 version up to the same quality as the 360 one.

  • @Witzbold:

Regarding the reactive objects you're curious about, from what I can tell as long as that flammable liquid gets touched with fire it should explode.

At the end of the video when they threw the blood bag to those little creatures, and then threw the flammable liquid you noticed when they lit the trail of flammable liquid there was an explosion at the creatures?

That tells us that the flammable liquid bottle exploded when the fire reached it in order to blow up the creatures, so that's why I imagine as long as fire touches the flammable bottle of liquid, it should explode.

That's what I got out of what they've shown so far anyway.

  • @Witzbold: Oh man I had forgotten about that Star Wars kid. Watching it again, still leaves me wondering if it was meant to be a joke in the first place. I mean, come on. Really.

Also, This game looks pretty cool. But I fear it might get really tedious really quick. (I remember being similarly impressed a few years ago over Condemned's weapon system, before I played it. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...)

  • Wow. This could be the closest thing to MacGyver: The Game we'll ever get. And I love me some Mac.

  • Looks great. Pretty excited for this game. Although from the footage they have showed so far looks like it will focus more on puzzles and atmosphere than enemies.

I giggled when she said ''Elements react realistically according to their physical properties'' and then showed a thick metal door being majorly dented by a pistol lol.

Isn't there a wii version coming as well? That would be great. I was thinking it would be a little awkward using the right analog for small movements or for holding an object in place while you walked with it.

This game could definetly benefit from DMM though. The table breaking looked silly.

  • Seems like the addictive factor will go up quite a bit with the inclusion of being able to control objects with your thumb. Makes the game just that much more immersive.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:24 AM on 02/27/08 *

@Moonchilde: Ill have to read his preview later on then.

Actually if you saw how thick the door was I seriously doubt it will be warping in such a way. You would need far larger rounds than anything a "normal" handgun can offer. Sides if the material was thin enough it should be passing through the object and not causing it to warp in such a manner. Granted it also depends on what type of rounds are loaded into the firearm also in terms of hollow point or standard. Its a bit excessive in the video itself.

Ive shot metal with pistols before and it makes small locational dents and does not cause massive warping. When we move up to rifles rounds depending on the calibur they will pass right through the metal. Of course this all depends on the thickness of the metal plate you are shooting at, angle etc.

Just saying that in the tech video it looked a bit excessive.

Granted its just a game and I know the realism isnt even present. I just personally found it odd myself.

  • Oh, what the heck...

    1:25 - So much WIN it's unbelievable.

  • @CHU BOI: I wanna see those real world physics.

  • Oh my...Atari thankyou...

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:27 AM on 02/27/08 *

@Zhabin: Yeah cept I think that example was a little different since he had punctured the bottle and stuck it on the monster.

Im more referring to like the user pouring the liquid on the ground then setting the bottle down. So its in a sense a separate entity from the liquid itself. Err shit that didnt sound right, but I hope you get what Im saying.

Since I could assume that the "punctured" bottle activates a "flag" telling it to explode if it comes in contact with fire. Im curious to see how a standard bottle reacts when it comes in contact with fire.

Imagine if there is a store room filled with bottles and you toss a flaming chair into there. :D

  • @Witzbold: I'm sure the metal warping will look awesome and add much suspense when there's something unsavoury bashing away on the other side of the door.

  • @greyhoundbus:
Hopefully better than the same damn teeter-totter frol Half Life 2, haha.

  • Its nice to be surprised every once in a while by a game totally not on your radar. This is such a game. It looks really cool.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:33 AM on 02/27/08 *

    @pylon_trooper: Ya totally.

It was just odd for me seeing that occuring with the pistol, then the camera pans around showing how thick that door is.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:35 AM on 02/27/08 *

    Hmm...

Box of nails + tape + bottle of flammable liquid = shitty frag grenade? :D

Yes I know its not that deep of a system, but one can dream.

Oh man I just thought of something funny though.

Stack up all the wooden materials infront of an entrance. Set a bottle of flammable liquid infront of it. Shoot the bottle when the moster arrives!

Bonfires make everything better! Actually wait that would cause all the objects to splinter apart. Im guessing a trail of liquid to a puddle under the barricade is a better idea.

Ok time to read that guys impressions of the demo he tried.

  • This definitely seems more like a puzzle game than anything else. The way you switch from third to first person when using firearms is kinda annoying, and the combat system seems rather bland.

  • @Witzbold:

Yeah, I thought you may have meant something along those lines as well. The way I figure it, there are so many games out right now where you can blow up exploding barrells, and gas tanks and things of that sort, I'm sure these developers (who are impressing the hell out of me) will throw in the ability to blow up bottles that haven't been punctured yet.

Also with the whole "real world rules" thing they're going with, I'm sure that's a sign of good things to come regarding exploding bottles of fuel.

That would be really cool though, to lure some enemies with some blood into a room full of those bottles with explosive capabilities.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:37 AM on 02/27/08 *

@HoboGamer: Good read thanks for sharing the insight!

  • Tables don't "shatter" into large shards like glass when hit with a single bullet from a 9mm pistol. Bullets tend to leave holes.

  • @CHU BOI: LOL that vid was priceless the funny thing is i remember when they filmed that last part at the Los Angeles zoo. LOL good times.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 10:42 AM on 02/27/08 *

@brandonf: Well granted that you are right about the table and the shattering, you dont know what caliber the pistol is.

Sides if it just left holes wheres the fun in that?

  • Lets hope this game doesn't show everything we can do in the real world rules videos and nothing else.
