Far Cry 2? Very environmentally unfriendly. Just look at that poor tree as it's torn to shreds by a simple pistol! Fortunately, Far Cry 2's environment is a little sturdier than our own, as the tree rebounds in ways environmentalists and the logging industry can only dream of.

Amazing! Crysis has a competitor!
So THAT'S where I left all my toxic waste...
That is some crazy impressive technology. I wonder if you burn everything if it grows back....
The point?
A gun doesn't shoot off branches like that....
So is this just "neat"? Because it sure as hell isn't realistic.
i like how games are getting more and more realistic........
wonder how much time passed between the player reloading the fun and the regeneration starting.
but kinda silly how fast it grew back. since it appeared to not be fast forwarded.
why didn't they make the branches splinter, then kind of fall? i don't see how a pistol would make a branch do acrobatic flips in two shots. not that i've ever fired a pistol at a tree's limbs before, but this just seems an odd result to me.
Hm.. It's funny how that gun obviously shoot .50 explosive rounds.
I definitely prefer the crysis route where it takes more than one shot and the branches don't go flying into the air...or grow back
take that you tree!
@Vecha: I agree, I hate it when everyone loves these crappy physics that aren't realistic. It's nice to see things being made more destructible but it's not being done very well.
No matter how difficult it was to program, the looks are just ridiculous. Behold, the handgun of doom.
That was totally awesome.
I think the purpose of this video was to show the damage + regeneration and not exactly the uber realistic physics.
Sides we are gonna be shooting at people a lot more than trees so its not like we will really care how the tree branches go breaking off when we are cutting through them to get at our targets. ;D
@Vecha:
I think that was a desert Eagle,if so it can definitely blow off branches like that.
It would be cooler on monsters.
The regenerator monster in RE4 was by far the highlight of the game for me. One of the highlights of gaming in general imho.
I really just wonder the use for this, it could be usefull for some God games, where simulated months take the matter of minutes, but have you ever been in a FPS where you spend more than a few months in front of the same tree not moving at all ?
Could be neat for multiplayer, allowing collateral damage to the environment that dosen't have to last as long as the map does.
I think it would be amusing to see some environmental activist going after this game like Jack Trenton does GTA.
"It's devaluing our children! What if some kids don't KNOW trees can't regenerate that quickly. Maybe he'll one day be the CEO of a company that wipes out an entire rain forest because he thinks if they really wanted it back it would 'just regenerate!'"
Well that pistol of his is either the .440 Cor-bon or the .50 AE version of the Desert Eagle.
I kinda would have expected the hand to jump a bit more firing that gun.
Newest Far Cry 2 multiplayer play mode - landscaping competitions.
Impressive indeed !
But the small bullet blade-cutting big branches, popping up in the air like Kriss-Kross, and the monstruously fast-regenerating tree... isn't it all a bit ridiculous ?
@Jakuub: BAM! take that forge!
@Yanko:
Yes. Yes it is.
I guess it's about as amazing as rag doll physics.
That was the most random demo I've ever seen.
Seriously, out of the blue.
Lets just ignore the fact that a small handgun can't do this damage to a tree and a tree wont grow that fast, look past that and at the concept itself.
@Cactuar: It was accelerated to demonstrate the feature. Just like the night/day cycle video was, and the video that showed their storm feature.
That Cryengine 2 is a fucking monster.
One of the developers mentions in another demonstration video that the tree-regrowth deally isn't going to be used in the game, its just a nifty function of the Speed Tree implementation in their engine.
Unless they have some sort of time travelling effect, I can't imagine how it'd really be of any great use.
@Yanko: At the start of the video it states that the regeneration is sped up.
I wonder if throwing a rock at tree will cut it clean in half too.
Maybe the branches are made of polystyrene, seeing how they fall to the ground.
No real trees were harmed during these shootouts.
@Witzbold:
"Well that pistol of his is either the .440 Cor-bon or the .50 AE version of the Desert Eagle.
I kinda would have expected the hand to jump a bit more firing that gun."
Um, what is your job? This sounds like something one hitman would say to another...
@Superuser: He's used to heavy weaponry. He wields the Ban Hammer.
And like Crysis, you need a 10,000 dollars computer to run it at 30fps.. using low settings of course..
If its not obvious by now, its a proof of concept demo as opposed to "this is what the games is about, you stand and shoot trees" trailer.
Thanks for playing.
It's just an exaggeration for demo purposes, but it would be cool do have a game where people you shoot go flying like that. Crackdown 2 maybe?
Ah, watching amazing technology at play. And in the most simplistic of interactions.
We don't climb that tree. No, no, no. We shoot it.
I'm no hippie, but damn...there must be some in-built fascination with empowerment through gunplay. When is this concept going to go beyond pointing-and-shooting?!
...*sigh*
Looks good.
I just watched the vid again and still its really cool though how the tree does grow back. I wonder what else they can use this technology for.
Like someone else said it would be real cool for a god game lol.
@Vecha: I agree, what was the point of putting this aspect in the game?
@Superuser: Or a gun otaku...
@Tiber: Indeed. Nothing made me smile more than kicking a perp and watching him fly like a football through a field goal. :D
Back to the DE its most likely the .50 AE version since nobody knows about the smaller .440 Cor-bon rounds in the dev community lol.
I still dont see why so many devs are so hard up on that gun. :x
I want to see what happens to the tree when a grenade launcher hits it! :D Kind curious if you can totally knock the tree down at the base of the trunk thats why.
@gamadaya: Except for the fact that this is the Dunia engine, you'd be correct.
Also, I sincerely hope regeneration of tree limbs takes much, MUCH longer in real time. There's no satisfaction in destructable terrain if it just pops right back up again.
@jayntampa:
My comment doesn't includes any criticism, so no need for the banhammer... i'm just curious!
One thing I worry about is with all the pieces of stuff breaking and flying about what kind of PCs we will need to play the game. Then imagine the meltdown that will occur when you launch multiple explosives into the forest. :x
@Shin-Kaiser: It's an open world game, you'll pass through the same areas over and over again so it'd be nice for the flora you mowed down in the first minute to regenerate.
I do hope structures and such will be destructable too. Oh man if so Farcry 2 will be the best game ever. Granted if ones PC can run it. ;D
Its nice to know that the devs are stepping away from all that mutant bioweapon shit too in the 2nd one lol.
I demand more hang glider action though!
I'd rather have the limbs stay off. Imagine being able to track your way through a dense jungle by marking trees.
@Vecha: Yeah, and damn that Shigeru guy for pitting plumbers against lizard-men. I mean, that's not realistic at all! Lizards LOVE plumbers!
And my god, did you hear that Mass Effect has ALIENS in it? Uncool, man. It really chaps my ass that BioWare takes realism as a joke.
Don't even get me started on that Street Fighter thing... "shoryuken" indeed.
Now lets see farcry 2 technology taken into real life!
Minus the tree regrowth.
+ Watch video
@Vecha: Whatever dude. One day I was landscaping and my shrub cutter thing wasn't working, so I was like "fuck that shit" and pulled out my glock. I sculpted a statue of david out of my shrubs and trimmed all the branches hanging over my house using only 465 bullets.
@Superuser: lol no, I meant, he literally wields the ban hammer ... so, he's used to weapons :D I didn't mean you deserved it.
@excel_excel: Crysis is farcry.
Oh, and whoever made the video apparently can't spall "time-lapse"
