For those of you wondering (and not already discussing the news in the Kotaku comments section!), yes the PlayStation 3 included in the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle announced earlier today will play select PlayStation 2 games via hardware and software emulation. SCEA PR manager Al De Leon confirmed that the hardware is similar to what was included in the 80GB Motorstorm bundle and will feature partial backward compatibility. While the original Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation should play without a hitch and Metal Gear Solid 2 is listed as having "no major problems", you may experience a hiccup or two playing the third MGS game.
According to the official PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility database, Metal Gear Solid 3 has the following issues: "At various points throughout gameplay, the title performs at a significantly slower than normal performance speed" and "During various FMA sequences throughout the title, the FMA does not play as 'smooth' as normal." Not bad. Not bad at all.

well thats still the secks
I wonder if the new collection will fix the errors. Also, for the collection, is MGS put onto one disk rather than 2?
Yeah, I've been playing MGS3 on my software emulation PS3. When you get spotted the framerate can drop and it appears as though everything is moving in slow motion. It was also particularly bad during The Fury boss fight. Anytime those fire effects showed up really. It only made the boss easier so I can't complain.
hey buying it for sure. now why can't we all have resident evil 0-3 collection mmm. its not too late for anything.
Yes, it does blend!! jking, but honestly why cant they release that for the 40GB ps3
All hail the mighty 60gb PS3!
Nice!!!
It will be a good time to replay them all before finishing MGS4 and crying ourselves to sleep knowing that our journey with our rugged war-torn friend Solid Snake has come to an end.
@Messer: I hear ya buddy. Glad I got the 60gb because I never owned a PS2.
MGS4 is backwards compatible?
What super-secret-yet-to-be-released system are you playing McWhertor?
And can I have it?
I've played MGS3 on my PS3 (60GB, PAL) and haven't noticed any slow down.
I'm gonna be getting a 60GB PS3 in a couple of weeks. The difference in HD space is negligible, especially considering I can put any 2.5 in there, and the 98% compatibility makes it worth the while.
@smfrank92: Wait for full software emulation to be released and integrated. Only a matter of time with officially just the 40GB running.
"Not bad at all"?
We've really lowered our expectations, haven't we?
Guess I am finally going to be getting one, especially now I got an HDTV with HDMI (sucks being an early adapter)
Not bad? From a company who prattled on and on about backwards compatibility when Xbox 360 came out and sounded their BC horn as loud as they could at launch, the fact that you get hiccups on a major PS2 game is appalling!
Nice. Now I'm definitely picking up that Metal Gear Solid Collection.
@dexterr: Yeah, why not?
Their web site also says that SSX Tricky works fine with the 80GB PS3. It actually crashes almost as soon as you start playing the game.
@Erwin: I didn't have the room to have the words: "Yes! It plays Metal Gear Solid! Yes! It plays Metal Gear Solid 2! Yes! It plays Metal Gear Solid 3! Errr... mostly! Yes! It plays Metal Gear Solid 4!"
@Heartwork: Not bad is better than not at all.
@GoKeithGo:
Wow. The words "hiccups" and "appalling" should never be used in the same sentence. No need to get all... emotional.
Yes, but can it play the Game Boy Color incarnation of Metal Gear Solid? Now THAT was a good game.
I'll definately be picking this bundle up. Not just for MGS4 but the DS3, been waiting for that to be packaged with a PS3 ever since the controller was announced. Oh and b/c isn't too bad either, although I already own two PS2's.
.
@Dishwasher:
I got an import Japanese PS3 on launch, then a PAL PS3 for the UK launch. I'm more than happy to have an early model. I've been freaking out on resistance since launch! Don't feel sorry for us, and it doesn't suck being an "early adopter"
@GoKeithGo:
Oh get over it. Stop being appalled. Use your PS2, deal with the hiccup or use your fully BC 20/60 GB PS3.
@Pr1vate_D0nut: dude, I have a 20GB. you won't see me crying tears of no BC-lameness. But I have MGS: Twin Snakes on GC, have to buy MGS2 and just re-bought MGS3. I still have the GBA version, MGS: Ghost Babel.
I'm covered
I'm so happy with my 20 gig PS3 upgraded to 120 gig. I would hate to have to deal with those issues related to backward compatibility through software and all.
@GoKeithGo: It'd be "apalling" if it weren't for the consumers basically thumbing their noses at Sony's effort to provide full backwards compatability. Sales show that people weren't willing to pay for it, so Sony removed it. And what do you know, sales have gone up.
You get what you pay for.
.
@Father ColdCuts (please donate to my charity event. Link on...: God! I sounded a bit harsh then.
@Dishwasher:
Sorry mate...
Now's my time to gloat in my near launch 60GB Ps3. Except then I'd feel bad. Why don't they just bring it back with the new chips at $500? I'm sure people would buy it then.
@Michael McWhertor: Nice. Metal Gear Solid 4 is playable on the Metal Gear Solid 4 Ps3. Nice to know.
Joking. Though it is a little silly.
@Heartwork:
What's wrong with "not bad"? That means it's mostly good.
Let's not forget: Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
Who wants to buy my 60gb PS3?
@Heartwork: Its Metal Gear... :-D a half working metal gear is better then no metal gear at all.
@Michael McWhertor: Way to get my hopes up...
I really feel like Sony is doing itself a huge disservice by taking out that emotion engine. I know I'm kind of beating a dead horse here, but here they are with one of the most successful consoles in history (PS2) and they're taking away the ability to market their machine as a PS2 AND PS3. This emulation business is rough around the edges for sure, and I'm sure they've found other ways to cut production costs by now.
Best news.
Hmm, for some reason I don't really use my PS2 games on my PS3. Maybe it's because the games I wanted to play had a file on my memory card and I don't have the adaptor. I'll probably play some others and any new PS2 purchases on it, though.
Hell, if I get the collection, I'm not even gonna touch it. Just gonna place it next to my DMC collection. Played the games enough already. I want MGS4!
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: GB version...sorry.
@Father ColdCuts (please donate to my charity event. Link on my profile): yeeeeeeah, I was cracked out on Resistance for months when I got my sexy 20GB. That was the first game i bought with it. As soon as I get Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, DMC4, UTIII and Super Stardust out of my mind, I'll be heading back to it.
I'm glad the 80GB is back. I was afraid the PS3 would never see backwards compatibility again. This bundle is great too though I already have my 60GB. :D
Hmm...no 98-100% compatibility is a no go. I'm going to have to skip out on the MGS4 bundle. I had heard rumours about that in the past (the removal and/or software emulation of PS2 compatibility) I'm appalled that they actually did those things. I have a Wii and a 360, and only want a PS3 for a few games coming out in the future and it's a great blu ray player so I haven't exactly followed every SKU. I hope the backwards compatible ones can still be found for a decent price. Either way, Can't wait to play MGS4.
I been spreading my little PSA that Sam's Club still has 60 gb ps3's. My sam's actually still has a huge stack of em. [www.samsclub.com]
By the way, I need to see some official box art for MGS4, just to leave me smiling as I sleep.
That's just a tad bit disappointing though. MGS2 with all of its long talking segments,boring codec sequences plays without a hitch while the action packed MGS3 slows down like an old man driving on the highway at 10 mph.
I'm guessing MGS3S will take an even bigger hit. Oh well, I'm keeping my PS2.
i have a ps2... and if that packs it in i can pick another up for about 30 quid if i must. mind you i have a 60 gig ps3 so i have BC covered too.
BC isn't essential, i play most of my ps2 games on my ps2, but it's nice to play with wireless controls, and to simply skip to psn titles etc.
i reckon sony will give software bc a little more care at the end of the year or the beginning of the next, they're pretty busy trying to keep the ps3's head above water for now - although mgs4 is going to be a big help.
i totally want mgs4 though. i can't wait.
@ThisCharmingMan: @Xideo: @Prophane33:
I've played MGS 3 Subsistence on my PS3, all the way through. 80 GB PS3, at that. And those slow-down issues are practically non-existent. It was only somewhat apparant during some of the cutscenes that there was a bit of slow-down, but it didn't take away from the awesomeness of the cutscenes at all. I didn't notice any slow-down at all, ever, during the actual gameplay. Period. None. It's good enough, simple as that.
I also played MGS 2 on my 80GB PS3, and it plays perfectly. I've played countless PS2 and PSone games on my PS3, and I've never really noticed a single issue with any of them, except like 2 games which have slight audio distortion and occassional graphical hitches that don't in any way get in the way of the experience, and that most people probably wouldn't even notice.
I find that the 80 GB PS3 has better backwards compatibility than the 360 does, easily.
2 bad that europe got no more bc ps3s :/
maybe we will get the 80gb modell, too :D
@baked ham: you're right, i've never managed to even get ps1 games working on my 360, let alone ps2!
Wow, this is absolutely terrible.
I guess I won't be buying the bundle... I'll just search Ebay for a 20/60GB model with the EE chip....
Seriously, why can't Sony implament this?
They'd get my business, instead of a random person online.
Thank god I wasn't a pussy and bought the 60 gig when it came out.
@big_world: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" is an absolute.
