While Metal Gear Solid 4, DualShock 3 and God of War news may have dominated our Destination PlayStation coverage, one other interesting leak came out of the retailer conference. According to sources there, the PlayStation Store is finally getting a graphical user interface overhaul, one planned to arrive alongside Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on April 15. The revamp of the PlayStation Store is said to give it a look more in tune with the SingStore, pictured above, which is already accessible from the PlayStation 3 version of SingStar.
Details were light on the change, but beyond a coat of paint, word was that navigation would change to a series of icons running along the bottom of the interface. We don't have official confirmation on this one yet, so consider it rumor for now.

giggidy!!!
Flippity, Floppity, Floop!!! I'm first bitchess!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank fucking god. Navigating that thing is a nightmare.
Damn I guess not!!!
Yeah, its about time.
MY GOD STOP THE SONY NEWS! I can't take it anymore!
No wait. Actually they've all been exciting and awesome. Give me more, Sony.
Also: badly needed.
That doesn't look to different really.
@deman1972: you shouldn;t do that
@StocDred:
Second'd. Really, the PS Store, while a nice addition to the PS3, is probably one of its worst utilized features. It's just not arranged well at all, and sometimes it can be really hard to find stuff that isn't a "featured item" anymore.
Hopefully this streamlines the shopping experience a bit for us all.
so many announcements from sony! it feels like a holiday or somethin'. flood of news is great news
PS3 is now ready to fully rock!
Damn, the good news just keeps on coming. Hopefully we can expect a few more tasty tidbits before the days end
@kw4k: ...and finally. i was becoming frustrated with the ps store's interface. an "overhaul" is much needed
I never had an issue with the playstation store. Thought it was fairly easy to navigate, but if its made any easier, than I can't complain. Right now though...I'm seriously feeling exhausted. So much news bombarding me at once, I'm just gonna go lay down and think about the MGS4 release date, DS3 release date, MGS4 bundle, God of War bundle...If i didnt already have a psp and a ps3...i'd want to make these purchases..Ah well.
This is starting to get nuts. Non-stop Sony news and all of it good. The PS store is DESPERATE for an overhaul.
Home around the same time maybe??
Holy crap...I'm going through some kind of PS3 overload today...I likes it!
uh oh. home open beta and a solid release date and then its checkmate.
Now the PS Store only needs to get more regular updates ESPECIALLY in the PSOne Classics section.
If you ever look at the Japanese store you could die from jealousy.
Biohazard 2? For $6? I'd buy three, Sony!
in-game XMB. I'm calling it.
@Archaotic: i agree. it didn't take long to find the stuff i was looking for; However, it should be more accessible to those who using the store for the first time.
Is the Singstar store done in webpage like the PSN store? If not, then maybe this April 15th date also signals a firmware update.
@Jechticknight: you can always sell it to me for like...Free and then purchase the new ps3, DS3 and PSP ^_^
THANK GOD. The store is pathetic, I can't even read the titles of the content or contracts and there is no way to enlarge the font without lowering resolution. I say this owning a 32' wide screen HDTV. Make it happen Sony!
Sounds counter productive for news about the playstation online store to be come out of the retailer conference.
I don't believe this one.
Now to top the day off, ether annouce a price cut, annouce FF7/8/9 comming to PSN, ps3 Jet moto HD, or dare I saw, teaser trailer for Ico 3.
Do that, and this will be epic news day.
Sony is on a roll today!
@deman1972: You lost precious seconds typing "Flippity...flop (etc)". Enjoy your suck at the mediocre tit of "second".
It's looking more and more likely that 2008 really is the year that the ps3 is going to shine.
Man I must be one of the few that don't mind the store as it is now. Does it need to be updated? Maybe, but if it never did I don't have any problems using it as it is now.
@Manny: you know actually i'm gonna call it with you. I think Something regarding the "notorious" in-game XMB will surface in the next coming days. With all this news, that might be the cherry that goes BOOM!
My brain is going to explode with all this sony news today. it all makes this PS3 owner very happy!
@jun581: Pfft...you're my brother. Fug that man. Get better at COD and beat me..then we'll talk such a thing ^_^. When you coming by anyway? I kinda wanna get a lan thing going with Herby.
This new whole site advertising on kotaku looks sooo ugly...
@deman1972: Witz will show you who the real bitch is.
@keyrat: I really hope its not a web interface, that would really speed up navigation of the store. Keep your fingers crossed.
I may be of the few here, but I don't mind the PS3 store and it has evolved nicely since it first came out. I have a harder time finding what I want with the 360 blades and marketplace than the ps3 store.
That said, they do need better find/sort functions (for example addons are only recent ones, you have to go to A-Z to find addons for say Ninja Gaiden Sigma). All in all, I'd rather they work on getting more demos, PS1 games up faster, but that's probably a different team, so its all good. I hope its more than just a paint job though, and they focus grouped their new UI.
It's about time. The current store is ugly as hell.
Thank god. it was long overdue for a new look.
keep the good news coming, Sony.
So this would mean at least an firmware update in April, hope something comes earlier for the in-game XMB
@deman1972: runs away from deman and his "first" post so not to feel the mighty force of the hammer
The interface is all that nees a spit-shine for the PSN. I have no other complaints. Very nice that they're streamlining the visuals to match Singstar. Leave it to Sony to work on making things uniform in their product designs.
@Returners:
yes, it would be nice to have the in-game XMB finally and to also have the PSN cards.
Next weeks Ban Monday is gonna be pretty interesting.
On a completely unrelated topic, is anyone else going to call out Kotaku for whoring themselves out with the Turning Point takeover ads? May work for IGN or Gamespot, but on an editorial blog site, it just feels icky.....
i just hope its designed for a controller.
the current store looks like it would work better with a mouse, and thats pretty lame for a console.
something more similar to the XMB would be preferred..
and stylish! and easy to find what you want!
/cant wait
@PownerOfNewbs: Gawker controls the ads, not Kotaku.
It's been a good day for Playstation 3 owners.
Why is it that everyone seems to associate HTML/XML with "slow?" The PS Store isn't really all that slow, it's just not that well laid out. The underlying technology isn't really the issue. For all I know, the 360 store is built in HTML/XML.
Very good news - can't stand the current layout/navigation scheme ~
The current PSN Store is horrible to navigate tbh, please Sony for the love of god change the damn design you fools.
I still don't like the fact that their design revolves around a 2 step process of 1.) signing in and 2.) going to yet another GUI with a seperate interface.
They need to fold the store into the XMB, make it browsable as soon as you're signed in and non-intruisive, unlike the current design.
good news. I hope its no longer a web page.
@Godstar:
I actually prefer going into a separate store. Reduces the memory footprint of the XMB considerably. And they need to further reduce its footprint, so plopping the store into the XMB would be counter productive.
@Godstar: No matter what, you'll have the system "Sign In". This process is generally transparent anyway, unless you're asking the PSN to inquire each time. This works exactly like XBLA.
However, I actually prefer the separate interface for the store. The 360's 'streamlined' interface is nice, but is very limited in what you can do with it.
I'll take my XMB anyday with all the cool themes and backgrounds. More intuitive for my overall needs.
@Candlejack:
HAZE is to be released this may
[www.psu.com],-release-date-announced-News--a0002884-p0.php
WOW, Sony is all out today! A early Home release would be the icing on the cake!
...mmmm cake!
@IntelSilver:
going all out*
I'll never understand how Sony can essentially screw the pooch with just about anything and then get credit for fixing it later. Sure it was over a year before rumble controllers got here, and sure they are more expensive....but at least they are here! Sure the store is abysmal...they'll fix it some day!
It's like making a bad product is part of the business model.
@drywaller79: You can say that again! The recent news from the Sony stuff makes up for Sony's GDC this year.
@Godstar: I agree, kinda like the MarketPlace is within the 360 Dashboard, I would like the PS Store like that.
Man...what a day for sony. Looks like they're pulling out all the cards up their sleeve. What next, a PSP phone that can control an AIBO remotely?
Wouldn't doubt if the glorious XMB comes with this update.
