Remember that rumor from EGM that pointed to a Dead Rising sequel coming from a Western developer? We heard a similar but slightly different rumor from a source that also says development duties are being shifted stateside, specifically at Vancouver-area third-party Blue Castle Games. If you're not familiar with the name, you may remember Blue Castle from its work on The Bigs for 2K Sports. While the relatively young, 100-person strong development studio is known for its multi-platform sports work, it is currently listing an unnamed "action game" for the Xbox 360 as one of three secret projects on its plate.
Recently added videos on the Blue Castle web site feature interviews with team employees who call one of their upcoming games "probably the most sought after projects in Vancouver" amid bleeps that might give some indication about what they're working on. Another interview with the art staff talks of working on "far more interesting things than stadium artwork" including "city streets, weapons and vehicles." While that in no way comes close to confirming that they're working on Dead Rising 2 for Capcom, the chatter we heard at last week's GDC makes it sound like the rumor has some basis in truth.
It wouldn't come as much of a surprise, as Capcom has shown that projects managed by its Japanese HQ and farmed out to Western talent is something the publisher is actively pursuing. Capcom has moved development on Bionic Commando, Dark Void and Okami for Wii to external teams, something it seems happy to continue doing.
When we contacted Capcom about Blue Castle's involvement, they opted to neither confirm nor deny the rumor. Likewise, our e-mails to Blue Castle went unanswered, so consider this rumor for now.

The Baseball Zombie Bashing physics will be EPIC!
This...would be terrible news. Not to insult Blue Castle or anything as I'm not really familiar with their work, but there's no way a company whose pedigree is in sports games would be able to do Capcom's work on Dead Rising justice.
C'mon, Inafune...make the game. Screw what Capcom Japan said, you even said you want to make the sequel, so make it!
For some reason I think I will be bitter about Capcom whoring out the excellence that was the DR franchise forever.
Then again thats just me being a pessimist.
The bad part is Im usually right. :x
Booo, i thought you meant the devolopers of big rig over the road races
In the spirit of Dead Rising, I wish I could make this comment IMPOSSIBLE TO FUCKING READ.
(still pissed i cant figure out what is going on in that game, but still having fun killing zombies regardless. i need an hd tv)
@Witzbold:
It's a curse, Witzy. A terrible, terrible curse. It'd make my day if we get a from-Capcom Rumor Smash on this one...it really would, since today's been horrible enough as it is.
At work so much bad crap was happening I started referring to today as "Murphy's Law Day". Looks like I was right.
well, at least they have all the assets from dead rising 1 to use, so it's not like they're starting from scratch. As much as I would love confirmation of dead rising 2, this doesn't seem to be what I was asking for...
A little part of me died reading that rumor, regardless of its validity.
Maybe it will be multiplatform this time.
So in the end, this will likely be released by EA right? lol
Oh no, i just died a little inside.
Man why would Capcom not wait and make it! i am getting mad because Capcom should be making this. Dead Rising is one of my favorite 360 games.
Haven't played the first, but I hope it doesn't suck.
I just ordered a strategy guide for DR to replay again. I'm stoked. I just hope they don't fuck up the sequel.
@0Jigsaw:
Capcom wouldn't make it because, according to Inafune, Capcom Japan was mad it didn't do well on their side of the ocean, regardless of its insanely good US/Euro sales.
So the rumor goes, at least. They just won't let him make a sequel even though he really wants to.
Dead Rising is still my favorite on the 360, this game was fucking excellent. Custom Soundtracks was a big part of it, but just letting me lose to kill endless zombies with a baseball bat to Metallica or something is all I need in a game.
@beezdeez: Not trying to troll, but why would you need a strategy guide for Dead Rising?
@IggyJReilly: I'm the exact same.
If it's not multiplatform then I don't care if it exists.
I don't care who makes Dead Rising 2, I just want it, and for the Ps3 and/or PC.
I need Dead Rising so badly.
@ghnvt:
Hope. That's all we can do...
@Sollus: i rather it not be multi
@AnEternalEnigma: because you cant read any of the text in the game? i know i havent progressed past the first couple of story missions because ive given up on killing my eyesight trying to read the objectives. I have shelved that game till the day I buy an hdtv. I just find it totally incomprehensible that a game, which was otherwise fantastic, could make it out with text that hard to read.
@0Jigsaw:
I would. I didn't buy a 360 just for the first one because at the time it was the only game I wanted for it and even now I only want to play probably 5 games total out of the entire 360 library. So 2 won't get me to buy a 360 either.
i fail to understand why Capcom wouldnt just let the same team make this game. It was near perfect the way it was, a it sold well over a million copies to boot!
Why mess with a working formula!?
@0Jigsaw:
Well, if this rumor ends up being true, the 360 can keep it. I don't think I'll touch the game unless it's by Capcom and multiplatform. There's just no way it'll work without Inafune developing it.
@IggyJReilly: If you do get an HD, choose carefully. The one I have, it's STILL hard to read the text on. An enormous improvement over my SD, but I still find myself squinting a bit. Rest of the game looks gorgeous in HD though.
@Witzbold: We've seen outside teams do a good job on existing franchises in the past. Metroid comes to mind.
Perhaps I am one of the few that isn't completely enamored with Dead Rising. I enjoyed the game but never finished OT mode, because the constant hunt for a new weapon and save system was frustrating.
YAY dead Rising 2!
@0Jigsaw: Why? What bonus do you get for not allowing other people to play it?
ugh. as good as the game was, some of the mechanics could use some reworking...by a CAPCOM team.
@aka Bitter:
The save point system is something that'd likely be addressed first in a sequel, regardless of who makes it, as it was the biggest sticking point for a lot of reviewers.
And I think a lot of people wouldn't mind the outsourcing if it was being done by a team with proven talent. Instead we're getting rumors that the guys that made a mediocre, uninteresting sports game are making the sequel, so people are understandably wary and displeased.
@Archaotic: I didn't really mind the save system too much. The survivors' A.I. could use some work though.
I really hope this comes out on PS3. I hope they add online too.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB:
Well, besides the ability to hold it over PS3 owners, as well as making himself feel better about his console of choice; having it be exclusive would also make development time significantly shorter. Especially with a relatively new developer who might not be comfortable on the PS3 hardware.
People still bitch about that one save slot system etc? God that shit harkens back to the old school days of gaming, it just shows those who bitch cant handle the old school gaming anymore.
@TOWER_JUNKIE:
"The survivors' A.I. could use some work though"
I thought that was the only thing the game needed. If they can fix that AND keep everything else the same while adding things like co-op, I'll be very happy.
@manjikengo:
Sometimes it takes an outside view to make something better.
I wouldn't consider handing over Dead Rising to an American developer a total failure. Hot dog arms aside, the games taken up by American developers all look good, so I trust Capcom.
Besides, all they gotta do is make the text readable, throw in a million zombies and let me go crazy. How could they possibly mess it up?
I've got both systems but with money getting as tight as it is I would imagine Capcom will release a PS3 version. Money makes the world go around.
Well this series may end up dead. No pun intended.
Although the least they can do is make a section of the game where enemies you defeat dont RESPAWN EVERY TIME YOU RE-ENTER! Im looking at you excaped prison convicts who somehow managed to get a military jeep into the center area of a mall with no visible way to actually accomplish such task with out the use of some sort of teleportation device or a helicopter
@zwilliams07: Why? You don't think that a series targeted at Western gamers could be properly handled by a team of Western developers? It seems unlikely that Capcom would just throw the IP at them and say "Have at it." Odds are that Capcom of Japan would have some say in how it turns out.
First Konami shovels Silent Hill to a western dev, now this...
In breaking news Fatal Frame 4 will be handled by Codemasters, and Resident Evil 6 will be handed over to Naughty Dog because apparently Japanese developers are simply done with that whole icky survival horror genre.
@Michael McWhertor:
As stated before, I really don't think this is an issue of east vs. west. This is an issue of Capcom vs. Generic Western Developer With No Clout or Experience in the Action/Zombie Genre. People don't trust this specific dev, not that they think NOBODY could handle it.
I heard a rumor (can't remember where, I know I know) a while ago that Bungie's next project was Dead Rising 2. We'll see...
No offense intended to Blue Castle but I don't think they are capable of handling a game such as this. It's not a subtle switch for them. You can't go from making a sports title to an amazing action game without previous experience. The expectations and standards they will be held to by gamers far surpass what they are able to do. That's just my opinion. I hope this rumor turns out to be false.
It seems to me that Capcom is outsourcing games that either have done well in America, or potentially will do well in America, with Okami as the exception.
Oh well, as long as the games are good I won't mind. I'd prefer however Inafune to work on DR2 since he said he wants to, I assume he has a vision for it. I'd like to see that.
@nomadder: So what are all the Japanese devs working on now? RPGs and Dynasty Warriors knockoffs?
Interesting to say the least. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to whoever's making the sequel. Just make it easier to read the damn text !
The Bigs is a fantastic game so I'd be glad if Blue Castle could make another great title with Dead Rising 2...
@SistedTwister: The Dev thing would be agreeable, but the Devs in question regularly work Multi-Platform.
If it were Bungie, I could understand reluctance to want to develop this for the Ps3-It would probably triple development times. But these guys have learned how to multi-task, they could pull it off pretty easy.
As much as I like dead rising...it was a bit too difficult for me(yes I'm a noob)
I hope they take out the time limits and such...
Really hoping it'l be on the PC.
