Warhawk's upcoming booster pack, Operation Broken Mirror, will feature an armored personnel carrier which can serve as a mobile spawning point and weapon producer and also create the "mother of all bubble shields," the game's producer, Dylan Jobe told me in a recent interview.
"You can roll this around a map and it's like this clean blank canvas for combat," he said. "When it's driving around it works as a mobile forward spawn point and when you spawn into it you get additional equipment."
Jobe said the APC will also be able to deploy a piece of equipment that is "like the mother of all bubble shields" and is a couple of hundred feet wide.
Enemies won't be able to shoot into it but allies will be able to shoot out and when a Warhawk gets too close to it it came become unstable and explode.
While the APC won't have a weapon of its own it does have a turbo boost, Jobe said, which can turn the entire vehicle into a giant missile of sorts.
"I've had kills before where I've launched through a Warhawk in an APC," he said.
The booster pack will come with a new battlefield which has ten layouts and it will also include new layouts for existing maps.
While Jobe was hesitant to peg a specific date, because the pack is still being play tested, he did say that he hopes to get it out by the end of next month of the first half of April.
While Operation Broken Mirror won't come with new gameplay modes, Jobe said they are talking about creating some and if they do come they will likely be released as free patches.
"I'd hope we would add new game modes, game modes are things I don't think gamers should have to pay for," he said.
I also asked Jobe about the possibility of a single-player campaign being released for Warhawk, which was once meant to include single-player play, either as an expansion pack or episodic content.
"We made a conscious strategic decision to go multiplayer only, If we were to go single player we would probably address it in another product," he said. "As a player I don't know if I would want to play single player through episodic content. I'd be hesitant."
Jobe added that Incognito isn't just 100 percent Warhawk nowadays either.
"Right now we are working on some exciting things," he said. "But we can't make any announcements."

Can it teach noobs how zone play works?
Nooo! They still haven't added in alien skins as my completely bizarre and irrational request.
It just looks so awesome, and I wanna play it.
That bubble shield seems like it could really shake up the current style of gameplay, especially for enemy warhawks.
Sounds pretty cool, though I don't really like the sound of being able to shoot out the shield when people can't shoot into it
I also wonder if you can fire the shield onto a warhawk or jeep or something so it can move around, that'd be cheesey as hell :P
I <3 Warhawk... so more new warhawk stuff is always GREAT news! keep it up incog!
PlanetSide!
Warp Gates and AMS'!
Sweet looks really good and I hope the new game they are working on is a new Jet Moto. Seeing as Incognito made the last ones I hope they will make another one.
@wisconsinista: Thats what... oh wait not many people bought head sets... damn it. Thats what's joining a clan is for. :-p But I agree.. Zones is my fav type of match... And I'm ussually the only one actually messing it up for the other team. In hopes my guys can capture some of the spots.
Home is gonna make this work a tad better I hope... That planning strategies thing will rock.
I can't wait for this patch!
can you pick APC up with dropship and have massive bubble in the air?
@Jext: Yes! Take/steal/leach more from PlanetSide please! It'll just make Warhawk better and better.
an invincible death apc that spawns players? sounds imba.
so they stole the idea of the Bubbleshield from Resistance i take it? (Backslash grenade)
when are we getting "parties"?
So warhawk is a paladin now?
Hey guys, this sounds like a rediculous question, but I honest to goodness tend to go with what the commenters say over the reviewers.
Is this game really any good? The more I look into it (and have been for some time) the more I want a PS3 just for it (Well, that and Super Stardust/Everyday Shooter).
It seems like the multiplayer game to end all multiplayer games.
@wisconsinista: LOL...I wish it could do that and also teach them not to put Mines too close together since they chain react when one is detonated. Teaching the meaning of "cover fire" would be nice...
Sounds badass. Not sure about the bubble thingy but we'll see. I like the APC idea. I doubt it's totally invincible though. A couple of TOW missles, some mines...should make short of it. Then again, the Dropshop spreads hot death like rain.
Anyways...Work's done, I'm home and as soon as I get something to eat...I'm off to play some warhawk bwhahahahahahaa
@Komrade_Kayce:
yes, get it. you will love it. unless you suck at it lol. this will only make it better..
@Komrade_Kayce: Warhawk is awesome. Get a PS3, buy it, play offline to practice flying and learning the stages, then go online with a squad and kick some ass. I believe Warhawk is one of the best multiplayer games releases this generation bar none.
Super StarDust is hot too. I'm still playing it and passed on Geometry Wars because SSD is better imo. Everyday Shooter is awesome but I want to get SSD out of my system before I dive into that.
@SkutSkut: pretty sure it'll either be a short burst of the shield, or just takes the "Flying death fort" to take it down or maybe 2 TOW missles
@Kataki: The more the better, PlanetSide has some great ideas.
Although the AMS had a cloak to try and disguise the spawn point. This thing has a supper glowy shield which seems to say, HEY BLOW ME UP GUYS ARE SPAWNING HERE.
Maybe thats how they are balancing it :P
@hamandcheeseUK: dude it's a shield
@Akmed: @Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.:
It seems kind of like a more arcade+sci-fi version of Battlefield, which is a very good thing. Would you say that sounds about right?
And hey, don't knock Geo Wars man, that game rocks as much socks as Super Stardust. It just takes a LOT of patience and some zen like focus when theres only one or two directions on the screen you can go without blowing up and you've got .1 of a second to make that decision.
man people will be playing Warhawk throughout the life of the PS3 if they keep the innovation up.
Warhawk = Greatest Online Gameplay OF ALL TIME!
I only wish there were more maps... but they're coming, slowly, and at a cost. But so totally worth it.
@wisconsinista: I wish.
I have warhawk, but none of my friends have it and all of the games I have played people to communicate very well. If anyone would like to post their playstation online name who plays this game seriously it would be appreciated. The addition of more great content is always welcome.
Can't wait for the new expansion, Love the APC with the moving spawn-point, I was actually hoping thats what the dropship was going to be. Should be great fun!
It irritates me that they charge for new maps when the damn thing only released with 5 maps. 5!!! This would be a good time for some 360 fanboys to harp in.
@Leonidas16: You can get people's Online name from their profiles. Just please people if you send a friend request type something to let the person know that you are from Kotaku.
Warhawk is a good online game. I usually get into good matches that are a lot of fun. I hope the patch helps the voice chat in the game. Not enough people use it!This is a game that depends on teamwork and the best matches I have are when people talk to each other.
@snakepliskin:
yeah but they're HUGE!! i mean HUGE!!
plus the many, many layouts too. nothing's more fun than cluster-bombing a tank from behind or shooting tanks from the other side of the map. or shooting a lightning bolt at mines where enemies happen to be.
trust me, if you haven't played it yet, play it. sure it's 5 maps (6 and/or 7 now) but they're a shitload of fun!
After playing Halo for awhile, I will automatically hate anything that has to do with a bubble and a shield.
@Komrade_Kayce: LOL, sorry dude. I got my 360 too late. By the time I could have gotten into Geometry Wars seriously, I started playing SSD and that was all she wrote. I'm number rank on my friends-list leaderboard with 207 million and trust me when I say that's not easy to get (thank the gaming gods for custom soundtracks) but the number 1 overall has 1.2 billion. Some serious skill there.
Anyways. I guess you could describe warhawk in that light but it reminds me of Tribes actually. I have to agree with others about the chat though. The best games I've played were when people actually talked. I'm in the Warhawk lobby now about to jump into a match as soon as I can squeeze onto one of my favorite servers.
@jackal888: agreed. I'm willing to play with any Kotakuite provided that either
a) they know how to play the game and have a mic
b) are willing to take some time in password protected sessions to practice missle dodging and learning the maps.
I'll go in with noObs and help them out or go in just to have a blast in Zones or CTF. Just add me and sent me a message letting me know what the deal is.
@Akmed: I bought it launch day and i love it i just find it lame that i have to pay another 8 dollars for 1 extra map and a drop ship. Its not so much the money its the fact that other multiplayer games have at the least 10 maps and most of those have some single player whereas warhawk is multi only and has 5 maps. Also the fact that dylan jobe said we were getting free add on content which has yet to materialize.
Dylan always delivers
@snakepliskin: yeah but have you seen how HUGE those 5 maps are? they could fit Crash from cod4 into any warhawk map like... ten times.
@snakepliskin: Look.....yeah, we have to pay for maps.....but the important stuff has been free. This new vehicle we are getting and the new weapons, they will be free with the patch right? And we don't have to pay to play online.....I'd rather just pay for maps now and then.....then pay to play.
It sounds awesome, almost too awesome. As in I hope it doesn't unbalance the game.
I thought this next patch was suppose to be free. I love this game, as many here probably know (as I started and maintain the Kotaku Warhawk clan,) but I don't like the idea of paying seven or eight dollars every few months in order to keep up with the servers.
Endless and repeated expansions is what killed the Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 experiences for me. Granted, these expansions give you more stuff, and a hell of a lot cheaper, but still.
I'll buy it, because it IS worth it (if Omega Dawn is any indication, of course.) But I just hope they don't take this to far.
Come on, Incognito, be REALLY cool and release this one for free and really make the 360 only users jealous.
Warhawk seems better and better every time they add content.
Holy crap... a new booster Pack and patch v1.3?!?! Jesus... I need to get back to Warhawk... damn you CoD4...
@Kataki:
Agreed. I was in the Planetside Beta, and though I never got into the retail game (got busy with work,) I loved the game and the way they pulled it off. Having a massive battle with almost 200 people fighting in the same area with hardly any noticeable lag with three separate factions trying to capture a single base... Freaking amazing experience.
I was always a stealth/assassin/hacker. Great to jump out of a transport so far up you can't see the ground, land in the middle of the base and cloak before you are noticed, sneak into control room after disabling the enemy heavy suit guarding the door, and hack the enemy turrets to attack their owners so they are distracted while I hack the core. Meanwhile, my squad wait to see the doors shoot open to rush in, guns blazing, and help me hold them back until the base comes under our control.
Great time with that game. Any game that comes close to that scale and strategy is a winner with me.
My brother will be buying this one I bought the Omega Pack.
Man I need a PS3.
@silentbob343 Don't let your brother tell you he paid for this, because I think this booster pack is free.
@PapaBear434:
The next patch is free (which includes the wrench and bio-field generator)
Operation Broken Mirror will cost like Omega Dawn(includes the APC and the new map "Vaporfield Glacier" aka snow map :)
I'm sounding like a broken record already...but will they bring the Papercraft back!?
I thought Warhawk was a lot of fun. I don't know if calling it the "best Multiplayer experience" of this generation is fair though. It's definately a nice diversion from Halo and COD4 though. I was very disappointed with Resistance multiplayer, so this is a nice excuse for me to turn on my PS3 for something other than to watch a movie. I do love me some Xbox Live and COD4 though. If I had money to burn I'd get the PS3 version of COD4 and check out some PS Net play.
Im just curious but it seems that the weapon menu/dpad is maxed out in a sense. are we gonna see a replacement of weapons for new weapons or a new menu for selecting weapons.
Sorry for the terrible grammar as my keyboard is a PS3 controller and typing is a chore somewhat.
Warhawk was a system seller for me. It is the reason I bought my 60gig. i got it at the price drop with warhawk and headset free.
I havnet had this much fun or spent this much time on a multiplayer game since goldeneye/pefect dark. not even call of duty.
@globones:
double tap on the direction of the weapon will change to the other version (knife to wrench etc)
"Warhawk gets too close to it it came become unstable and explode."
I'm perfect I'm allowed to do these kind of things!
Warhawk rulez!!
I almost never quit the game and go back to XMB. I love the way you can jump into a game of your liking within a few seconds :-)
My PSN ID : kak
Dear Sony,
I live in a country that has no Playstation Network Store. Due to that I was forced to create an account based in the US so that I can download trailers, demos and themes and stuff. However I cannot add a credit card to my account so I cannot buy games or add-ons or in this case the expansion for Warhawk.
The only thing that helps is the playstation network tickets.
Please release them now.
hugs and kisses,
Me
Oh Warhawk, how I love thee
The only reason i stopped playing warhawk was because of the 5 second respawn time. Its just rediculous, from 67th in the world, all the way down to like 900th now because i dont play it any more.
I dont even like the gameplay any more.
Ooft, i used to love this game :-(
Warhawk is setting the standard for quality for this generation.
@wisconsinista: Srsly.
@glitched: Here! here!
