Anyone who watched the Oscars last night caught what may have been the most non sequitur moment in both movie and gaming history—after coming back from a commercial break, we were greeted with an intense match of Wii Tennis. Upon finishing, Stewart asked, "Am I supposed to be winded?" Everyone laughed.
And then they shifted nervously in their seats, frightened by the autonomous entertainment device in the foreground. If you missed the Oscars last night, here's the video:
But it was just a little odd, no?

Exciting! Exuberant!
"Anyone who watched the Oscars"
Good one.
John rocks :D
I didn't even know the Oscars were lastnight. For the first time in 10 years I've missed the Oscars. LOL
Yeah, it was definitely one of those nice "WTF!?" moments. Though the threats he was shouting to that 11-year-old girl as she ran off stage were a bit unnerving... The Oscars were pretty good all around this year overall.
Non-sequitor, you mean?
Also, who was playing it?
HA.
I personally was a little off put by how the game kept playing for several seconds after the camera had zoomed back in on Jon Stewart ... it was distracting and strange.
Also, There Will Be Blood should have won best picture.
The Oscars were last night?
This made me think "are the writers still on strike?"
It's funny because he's playing one of those new fangled videogames.... But those are for kids you silly man!
Seriously though, that just reminded me of the cringe that was the Ellen show when she played guitar hero.
Saw that when it aired. What would REALLY be awesome is a Stewart/Colbert boxing match. Someday maybe.
I was actually playing TF2 when the oscars were on. One of my group-mates said "Hey isn't it Oscar Night?" or something to that effect, the response was unanimously "So?"
I agree wtf?
Needs more Fils-Aime
Well hello Sir Awkward, would you like a cup of tea?
Oscar Highlight imo
@Jekht: Betcha Activision payed her off.
I think the universe collapsed a little. Only a spin in the De Lorean can fix this time paradox. Also, people actually watch the Oscars?
Obligatory "millions of people seen this so I have to make an attempt to further marginalize us as a group" post (otherwise known as the "was that the Arcade Fire in a Super Bowl commercial?" response). We're so too cool for this shit.
@Nintenboy01: agreed
what's even odder is that i'm fairly sure it was pre-recorded.
i felt it was very awkward to say the least. I guess all the writers really got into games while on strike and had to show some love... a year and some change after its release.
I didn't notice Wii Tennis showed up at the Oscars until the melt at the end of the show. That caught me off guard.
I still need to see No Country and There Will Be Blood.
I still think Colbert boxing Nancy Pelosi=Best use of Wii Sports on TV ever, but that was not as bad as I might have expected given the craptastic nature of most Oscar shows-the presentation, if not the movies.
Also this was freaking Hilarious, Gary Busey is like somebody's drunken uncle let loose among "the beautiful people". If only he had physically assaulted Ryan Seacrest, but even the Businator ain't perfect ;)
OMG, anyone else thinking the Wii sensor bar required for that screen may possibly be able to pleasure Jenna Jameson? :p
Jon Stewart was trying so hard to be hip it was almost painful. Seriously, the iPhone flashing... the Wii... we get it, Jon, you're one of the cool kids.
[www.godmodeonline.com] XD...
I wish they would rather had made some points in awards toward games or cinematics in games (Greatest Cutscenes that make you wait to play another part of game) but hey, a semi-good joke with the wii. Meh.
@Barstoolio: Actually, it's Non sequitur.
It was pretty goofy.. certainly only a guy like Stewart could have pulled that off with as little amount of awkwardness as possible.
@Tchaikovsky08: I thought they chose correctly.. what does it for me is that I REALLY want to see NCFOM again because of the movie as a whole, whereas I only want to see TWBB for Daniel Day-Lewis' performance.
@rotcepsurt: funny, but I think they might of had some guys backage playing with john simply ad-libbing the scene for the crowd.
And no, it wouldn't have. The Cloverfield Monster is the closest thing to pleasuring JJ at this point. Saddly, he wasn't up for the Oscars last night
Good show this year.
@DaiMacculate: Got a video of Stephen and Nancy boxing?
Award shows suck. All of them. Especialy ones that show people playing the Wii. I wonder how much Nintendo shelled out for that one. Award shows are pointless (other than selling nework ad space and to promote the "winners")to begin with and now they feature in show commercials as well. Next year instead of every one wearing tuxes and designer dresses they will probably be wearing NASCAR style jumpsuits with sponser patches all over them while a Coca-Cola cup sits on the podium a'la American Idol.... Disgusting.
@ca$h:
Yes, please.
Only award that mattered was Falling Slowly by Glen and Marketa NEEDED to win Best Song. And it did! So therefore, Best. Show. Ever. :)
Other than that, yes There Will Be Blood should have got best picture... and director.
I hate award shows, always have. I think John did a good job though, especially having much less time to prepare then they normally get, and he was the only reason I watched. The bit was pretty funny, continuing on a joke from earlier about how they kill time during commercials.
@Mr.SithNinja: having a bad day aren't cha?
For one thing, I can't imagine anything on television being more boring than The Oscars. It's like a Paid Programming show for movies. If I ever actually get pulled into watching it, A) I feel uncomfortable after 5 minutes, and then B) I leave the room.
The fact that people actually watch a show like that shows how truly enamored the American public is with celebrity, because that's all it is. A bunch of actors and actresses in a "real life" environment so everyone wants to see how they look, act, etc.
I'll pass.
I can't imagine why i'd want to spend my time to watch a youtube video of some guy playing some video game on some awards show stage. sounds really boring. i'd much rather ... you know ... play a game or something. zzzz.
I get that i'm supposed to be amazed that actual people in the real world play games (zomg! mainstream!) but meh.
@Toasticus: Heh, and I always thought the joke was how uncool he is, hence the (In My Opinion) obvious nature of his wooden analysis and reactions when he is dealing with "new-fangled" stuff. It wouldn't shock me to realize that he is actually quite well informed and tech saavy, although I can't offer any evidence, its just a hunch ;)
@FusionHype: I actually have the ep downloaded in iTunes somewhere, but I did find this link of it you can probably watch. Note this is a Pelosi-Mii he boxes, not the Speaker herself ;)
I think it just goes to show how mainstream the success of Wii has become. When almost ANYONE sitting at home can say "Oh Jon Stewars its playing a Wii!" Then you have a hit on your hands...but Nintendo doesn't need ME to say that to know it.
Then after they said on E that Wiisports is so last year. lol. Sorry really bad joke.
@mva5580: Actually, I consider the Oscars the most reputable of all the award shows. There's still a great deal of regard and respect for the art of film and the medium itself, and the ceremony has a high tendency to highlight that.
What seems to shit on it all are the entertainment outlets like E! that care about a) who wins, b) who gets "snubbed," and especially c) what people are wearing on the red carpet. But the ceremony deals a lot with the medium as an art, and there are plenty of films and artists in the industry that they honor for their work that I know I haven't heard of, because they represent the medium at its finest.
The Grammys are a whole other story, though...
Anyways, I really didn't care for Wii Sports being highlighted at the Oscars. Here are my issues with it:
1) Jon Stewart was playing tennis against the 11 year-old that sang earlier in the show. This only furthers the stereotype that games are for kids and are only toys.
2) They played Wii Sports. Though old, the game is shown to represent the gaming industry as a whole. All Jon needed to say was "Am I supposed to be tired," to also further the idea of games as a novelty.
3) It was played at the Oscars. As I talked about earlier, many feel as well the Oscars are actually more reputable of an awards ceremony. It represents an art that we can all relate to and appreciate. Now we're shown a snippet of a game to represent it as a child's toy, or a novelty for adults, and this juxtaposes a misrepresented art medium with the much loved and beheld Oscars.
It actually could easily offend those that hold, justly, Video Games as an art medium itself, though young. In many ways, this only furthered these unjust stereotypes of the medium we cherish, and I can't help but feel it was done intentionally. After all, aren't movie producers nervous that Xbox Live will ruin their box office profits?
Does this mean Postal won?
The only thing I appreciate about this video is the fact that Jon is doing what Shiggy and co. were doing on that very stage 2 years ago lol
@Jmontilla2786: No, I just feel that all award shows (especialy the Oscars) are nothing more than 3+ hours of filler. I mean who realy gives a crap what movie wins Best Costume Design and why the hell do I need to hear a speach from everyone thanking people that nobody but them gives a rat's ass about. The whole thing could be done in an hour but they stretch it out as much as they can to sell more ad space, and now they are stooping to in show ads. How pathetic is that??
@mva5580: I agree completly.
how fitting the meaningless console shows up on the meaningless awards show.
All award shows are nothing but 3 hours of asskissing. Plain and simple.
They should make an award show on real shit...best ass kicking...best car wreck...best something else!
*sigh*, more of the "We don't have any writers so lets "entertain" via a live demo of a game that simple enough for the host to play and popular enough for the audience to give a flying sh*t." This must have been the PA's idea.
Although I'm the kind of gamer who can enjoy myself by simply watch my friends playing on of the abundant single player experiences they all own; instead of diving into the pile looking for one of the three games they own with a co-op/off-line multiplayer experience. This sort of sh*t is more of a "shiny fake gold jewel" used to catch our interest even though it becomes GLARINGLY OBVIOUS the host has no clue whats going on and then attempts to make it alright by inserting their own brand of "hilarious" dialogue. (This is by no means pointed at John, he's a great guy who show I don't watch, but I certainly not gunning at him). My opinion is more along the complaint that the Hosts of my Mom's favorite daytime Television Programs start to notice the lack of the topics in the past Writer-less weeks, and their bland attempts to showcase games from last year has her Screaming for me to come over and see this because she thinks I care.
I'm being harsh, this is only a Movie Awards ceremony, but I tend not to enjoy my media preference being "Show and Tell"`d on another media that can't seem to come up with a good "movie media" specific spoof on it's own.
@Mr.SithNinja: I care who wins Best Costume Design... and I ended up caring about who won Best Original Song and Score more than Best Actor... *is lame*
Anyways. I think the funniest part of that bit was the fact that the girl kept calling him "Mr. Jon," which isn't really that funny.
@AntiZERO: Actually, the writers are back... so the Wii demo wasn't even out of desperation.
@Mr.SithNinja: "I mean who really gives a crap what movie wins Best Costume Design...?"
Probably thousands of fashion designers, for starters.
@Mr.SithNinja:
I mean who realy gives a crap what movie wins Best Costume Design
Possibly the costume designers and his/her assistants?
I mean, I totally agree with you about the value of watching the Oscars as a general media consumer, its pointless and vapid to the extreme. That said, I do think some of the amazing work being done in Sound, Special Effects, Costumes, etc right now needs to be recognized, usually even with a crappy script and sub-par Actors those people still do great work. It probably doesn't require the crappy television program, if the Writers hadn't come back we could have avoided that and people still would have gotten awards, I assume thats what most people are referring to when they lament the end of the Writers Strike, if they had just waiting 2 more weeks we could have all been spared the Oscar program ;)
Also the idea that Nintendo paid anybody for this is kinda silly, why would they need or want more advertising for the Wii right this moment? I'd guess their ad agencies are totally focused on the upcoming Smash campaigns at the moment, not on stuff like this.
@hrunting: I thought some of the late night talk shows were 1000 times better without writers, i.e. Conan O Brien.
When I saw Conan wailing away "Creep" on a real guitar with the rest of the staff on Rock Band, I really wished I was that tall, went to Harvard, and perhaps even had an inkling of the awesomeness that Conan seemed to exude on that highlight.
@hrunting: Heh see my response right above this; I think most people are referring to the fact that it was predicted about a month ago, if the Strike was still going into last Weekend the Oscars would have been cancelled or at the very least not televised ;)
@indiemike: I agree.
Gotta love all the comments from annoying kids who don't care about the awards.
What is it with Americans in our generation anyways? Everyone just sits at their computer doing nothing. Up and down my dorm hall yesterday, nobody wanted to watch it. I brought it up to people online and they didn't even know it was on. Something special happens and nobody cares, they just want to go about their sad fucking existence.
It's like people who say they don't care about Christmas. Not people of other religions who don't celebrate it; I'm talking these
