A little while ago, the Shenzhen Nanjing Technology Company released Final Fantasy VII. On the NES. Totally unofficially, of course, but also totally, officially awesome. Sure, the game eschews Chocobo racing, limit breaks and even Yuffie and Vincent, but this being a NES cart, casualties are to be expected. What does make it in there are the other six characters and almost the entire main storyline of the multi-disc PlayStation epic, an achievement I have no hesitation in labelling Herculean. Since you'll never own nor play this, you can check out some screens here, with well over 100 more at the link below.

Wow, I never knew the thing was real. I only heard a mythical tale about there being a FFVII NES cartridge. I wonder weather there was an english release. So want, if there is.
How is that cool exactly? I mean, I've got just as big of a woody for FF7 as the next guy...and it's "nice" that somebody did that.
But no Yuffie, Vincent, Limit Breaks, or Chocobo Racing? Which means no Chocobo breeding? Which means no Knights of the Round....etc, etc.
Boo.
FF7 was three discs.
Good lord. D:
You ever think that since FFVII was like one of the first, maybe only polygonal RPG on the playstation at the time, that THATS why so so mega popular? I mean i love that game to death as it was one of my first forrays into RPG-dom and i didnt even play it when it first came out. I watched my friends uber otaku sister play it but i was just mesmerized and captivated by everything going on. It looked just so beautifull at the time.
Or maybe this is a generally accepted answer and reason and im just late to the party.
Reminds me of this: [ff7nesremix.ytmnd.com]
I never knew it was real, though! :O
They should do it for VIII.
Why does the cartridge say Advent Children? Wasn't that subtitle only invented years later? Is this some sort of hoax? Did somebody just hack a rom, swap some sprites and text, then made some screens and called it proof?
Amazing.
let's do it it on a SNES cartridge now.
Wild Arms was the first RPG to use 3D I believe (well, the battles anyway) and it didn't sell too well.@ArmyofJuan:
FF9 on SNES would be incalculably cooler.
@Jim Reilly: i was always a fan of Wild Arms 2 the most for some reason. Although if i replayed it today i probably wouldn't have the same opinion
isn't the front of the cartridge the logo for advent children thou?
Although it's already kind of started, oncoming trendy FFVII hate that's mystically only appeared ever since the game gained popularity.
I was never a big Wild Arms fan either, but the games are still above average all things considering. The intro song to WA1 - To the End of the Wilderness- is still my favorite opening song.ArmyofJuan:
Sweet, now remake it.
Wow. Fitting the story must have been difficult...
That is SO awesome.
\/\/|-|3R3 R D4 R0/\/\z??
If this is unofficial surely there must be a rom somewhere :(
Asbestos_Underwear:
(Why do I feel so stupid typing your name?) It is fairly common practice in the Chinese Famicom scene to slap together a label using popular artwork for another game. I have Langrisser cartridges with artwork for Wind Fantasy III and other big PC titles. I would say you are lucky it even uses the Advent Children logo. There is an alternate version of this cart with a different title screen that appears to be a hack of this pirate cart by another pirate cart producer.
When you get into how the Chinese FC scene works, this stuff is really common. Often Chinese dumpers have no idea if the cart they are dumping is real or not. For example, the dump of Menghuan is a known bootleg of Chi Liuxiang, which (as far as I know) remains undumped. The question is, is the Chi Liuxiang version actually produced by Waixing Toys, or did that company rip it off another source?
Getting to the origin of these games is like unraveling a ball of rubber bands. As far as I know, this one is pretty straightforward. It is also easy to believe Shenzhen NanJing is the maker, as it produced multiple Famicom games in-house -- some original and some hacked. Its carts are also branded with the company logo seen in the top right. Pirates of pirates rarely sport such branding.
I am suspicious this game was made as recent as Advent Children, because new FC games are at a trickle here on the mainland. It is possible this cart is a reissue and they updated the artwork: either that or it was produced when Advent Children first entered development, and it ripped off an early release of the logo.
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, post them here or at my article. I'll try to answer as best I can.
Why Does it say FFAC? The sticker (it it was actually placed on the time this thing was made) would mean this NES cartridge.. is MAX only a few years old. WTH. I'm so confused.
Given that the game is in Chinese I'd hold out little to no hope of the thing being translated.
Definitely worth a try.
Is this even legal? Copyrights?
Although I'm not a fan of FF7, I still have to say I'm really impressed by this knockoff effort. It's really amazing how they managed to recreate the game for the NES (granted, they "cheated" a bit by using larger memory chips than ever used on an official game).
... FFVII DS, confirmed.
Behold! The FFVII remake! Now can we please never bring up remaking that game again.
SumDum_Guy:
Copyrights? In the Chinese mainland?
Wa ha ha! You're new to this :(
@SumDum_Guy:
No, it isn't. But some companies aren't too aggressive about prosecuting knockoffs if they're AWESOME.
Look at Barret, definitely a lawl moment.
I wouldn't play it really, but if I was on the road and had no options; I am sure it will be a nice timeskinker.
Now the transition?, Super-duper work. Definitely worth mentioning for even trying to tackle the feat.
You know, it's funny. Way back when the Gameboy Color came out games that had been either Playstation or Sega Exclusive suddenly started turning up with GBC versions, I wonder if Square might suddenly return to Nintendo with a GBC FF7 port or something. It was laughable, I know, but I could see it working. You know, dump the FMV and polygons, make CG sprites like in DKC, cut a ton of color out of the original game's pre-rendered backgrounds, and you'd be in business! And now... THIS. This might be fun to play. XD
How has no one noticed Red XIII Missing?
You know, looking through the screenshots, some of the characters looked... Familiar... I thought I saw Ramba Ral and... Wouldn't you know it... Quattro Bejina proves it. The portraits are lifted from Super Robot Wars. :p I'd say probably from one of the NES or GB or even Wonderswan versions... Except... I have a sneaking suspicion Cloud is being played by Kira Yamato here... And he didn't exist when SRW was on those platforms. Curious..
GODS AMONG MEN. i spent today eating cereal and these guys made ffVII NES? Today is the first day of the rest of my life.
Holy mother of God!
Why?
I mean, it's impressive and all, but why?
Here is the download for the ROM:
You must use Nestopia to play it:
[nestopia.sourceforge.net]
@DietMrPibb: Hes there just check all the screenshots again. You will see 1 with him in the party.
lol, that's amazing. FFVII just gets hate because it's popular. I sometimes get sucked onto the internet bandwagon, but then I'll remember that it's actually a breathtaking game, even today.
@Transgenic: In other news, Gawker media is sued for facilitation in the illegal transfer of copyrighted materials -.-
NES FTW!
NES is makeing a casually late appearance to the console war again :P
@Siye: Yes it was made recently.
I was afraid to look at all the screen captures in case there might be spoilers.
No Red XIII... no Vincent... no Yuffie...
... well, there goes my whole party. :/
Yeah, a nice effort I suppose, but the omissions kinda kill it for me. They had to lose the musical scores from VII too? No limit breaks, no chocobo racing, etc, etc.
Yeah... I understand the whole "casualties will exist" bit... but damn. Yeah, yeah... Aeris dies, Cloud wasn't in Soldier... I prefer the full experience, thank you. It's one thing to gain the charm of an old NES RPG and pull off all they did... but to lose half the soul of the game in the process... bummer.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't go multi-cartridge with this project, both for the novelty and to recreate that disk swapping feeling. Still, nice idea, love to see funny stuff like this.
@budash2: How about the fact that assuming this game was easily available to the masses it would mean some of us would finally get to play FFVII.
...like me.
How is it that despite my posting multiple screenshots with Red XIII, people are still posting that he is not in the game ...? The whole Cosmo Canyon quest is there. I even posted a picture of his stoned father. I just do not use Red XIII in battle because I am not a furry.
Also, I would like to correct a typo in my earlier post. For the record, the game is Chu Liuxiang, not Chi Liuxiang. It is based on the Gu Long novel.
it will be a fan sub before long then people will download the rom
Things to do today.
Learn to read kanji.
Play this.
Those Shinra Soldiers that attack after the train arrives, don't look much like Shinra Soldiers, though. Just sayin'
@Xiedo:
eww
If this was on the gba I'd snap it up in a second. But that's a famicom cartridge anyway right?
JudgeNutmeg: Learning Japanese kanji will not help you all that much, especially since this game is in the Simplified Chinese characters used on the mainland. :)
