I got a chance to swing by the SNK Playmore Suite at GDC to check out some of their offerings. Most of what they had going on on their screens were showings of their various game anthologies including Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2, King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match, King of Fighters Collection Orochi Saga, Samurai Shodown Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 and World Heroes Anthology. Not a whole lot new here but there were a couple of nice looking trailers for King of Fighters XII and the New Samurai Shodown.
The real treat however was a little surprise waiting on a DS in the corner, Metal Slug 7! I hot footed it over to the corner of the room and practically wrestled the girl playing it to the ground in my attempt to check out the game. It looked great, played better and had everything you could possibly want from a Metal Slug game. So if you are ready for a new Metal Slug experience, look no further than Metal Slug 7, coming soon to a DS near you.

"practically wrestled the girl" eh?
I hope it's better than 6. That was terrible!
They could use a new engine..
DS Strikes again! Taking another main game in a series!
Hah. Good DS...
Never played a Metal Slug game, might as well try it when it comes out.
Cool, been looking for a new shooter after playing Contra 4 to death (although I still enjoy a quick blast every now and then).
I was gonna say, that kinda game isn't going to do well in the arcades nowadays...
Good to see more stuff like this coming back from the dead, though I'm not sure I want to spend much more than 10-20 bucks on these sorts of games anymore.
It's sad that it's not coming to a TV near me...
Argh, looks awful. Why not make it arcadish instead of putting it on the DS's low resolution screen? It could be on XBLA, PSN, the PSP...
Can't wait to play this, but I do hope this has single-cart/download play
Wonder what im gonna be fighting now. Probably some game pirates, or sumo wrestlers.
Sweet its great that its coming to the Ds would have prefered PSP but oh well :P
Does anyone know what system the new Samurai Showdown game is coming to?
Those screenshots don't look to flattering, but everything i've read about it has been great. I'll wait for some video.
Huzzah, finally more MS7 news. Now if only that "coming soon" could be a bit more specific...
So why no info on the other games?
Missing: Pictures of Fahey "practically wrestling" that girl to the ground ;)
MS7 for DS should rock, I look forward to good use of the dual screens for really awesome vertical levels.
Confirm unlimited continues and I'm there.
@Ashurahori: XBLA would be a good idea. Then I wouldn't have to steal my little brother's DS to play it.
metal slug games on gba were bad enough because it had no blood and other stuff. I rather have this games on consoles instead of a tiny screen.
I agree with Ashurahori about being disapointed its on the DS. Put it on psp or even better XBLA or PSN.
@t0yrobo:
I think they look pretty good for the DS.
Like how everyone is neglecting to mention the Wii but automatically goes to the "real consoles." Honestly, it would look great on all the consoles, but we aren't expecting a Metal Slug Anthology thing are we?
give me sam show collection already; argh!
Maaaaaaaan, we gamers should unite against recycling so much. I want an HD version (2D, of course).
Metal Slug 6 was fantastic. Way better than MS4 and 5. I'd put it just under 3 in terms of greatness.
Really lookin' forward to 7
Nice! I miss hearing "Rocket lawn chair!"
Most unintentionally hilarious mispronunciation ever.
@ShaggE:
I do hope that at one point they actually add the "Rocket Lawn Chair Slug".
I am for one am absolutely totally freaking out for the samurai showdown comp. on the wii. oh yeah, and KOF 98.

Sounds like it may go to arcades, but only in Japan.
*sigh*
Another beautiful 2D game squashed with DS's small screens.
I f***ing love you SNK.
Please announce this for XBLA/PSN/WiiWare SNK!!!! I'll buy the DS version, but I'd want a nice big screen version of it too.
Put it on a disc, make it downloadable, charge £1000 per minute for playing it, I dont give a crap... GIMME!
and to think I was going to sell my DS a few weeks ago XD
heh. i <3 you DS!! you have brought me so much joy!
gotta finish AW:DoR before MS7 comes out, or it''ll be another game i got lined up to finish!
I'm all happy inside.
I can't wait for Metal Slug 84!
You know, it's been 12 years. Does it seem unusual for me to want a metal slug game with I dunno..... NEW SPRITES!!! Snk's worse than capcom used to be with this stuff. I mean back in the day, capcom would release the exact same game but add a character and the metal slug sereis has been doing the same thing... the only problem is it's been 12 YEARS and unlike capcom, it isn't a fighter, so just adding a new character isn't acceptable!
Even capcom is wising up at this point and their next 2d street fighter (hd remix) will have all new sprites. Snk, stop being cheap.... hire back the original artists used before the company failed and have them make some new, better animated, hd, sprites!
I don't mind the absence of new character sprites. I don't mind reusing enemy sprites, or even bringing back bosses.
...what I DO MIND, is that Metal Slug has always been beautiful in its execution of bringing us high-quality sprites onto the screen, to show destruction in a wide-scale. That will simply not work on the DS.
SNK, give us a PSP/PSN/XBLA version. (I didn't mention the Wii because this game could only be released by WiiWare, or a budget title)
@Ashurahori: I'll tell you what I mind myself...
That this isn't going to the PSP... :( *sadpanda*
Meh, I'll be jammin out to my MS Anthology, then.
God I love Metal Slug.
I cannot wait for this, the only thing better than Metal Slug is portable Metal Slug.
Sweet, I'll be grabbing this, all I have left to beat on the DS is PW4 and a loaned out copy of FF3. Metal Slug had a good comp on the wii and i'm excited to see a new entry coming for the DS. I really don't care about the graphics, so long as it plays like other metal slugs, I'll be happy. As for you, SNK. Good job. Get KOF XII done NOW.
Metal Slug on your ds is like having cake with ice cream. I'm getting that right when it comes out.
This game will sit happily aside my copy of Contra 4.
Which, by the way, everyone with a DS should buy.
Its good to see they are still using hand-drawn sprites. It s a dying breed I tell you... snff.:(
So, is it the quality of the screenshots or are the sprites downscaled? it looks HORRIBLE that way...
And how in the world could they replace the beautifully pixelled backgrounds of Metal Slug 1-5 with with those ugly and static pre-rendered backgrounds? it's beyond me...
Seeing how bad Metal Slug 4, 5 and 6 were, I'm not very hyped about this one...Metal Slug 1-3 are still my favorite sidescrolling shooters *ever*, it's just sad what they did with the franchise...
TGInot3D
GOD, make this multi-platform.
@vaterunser: Really? You don't think the DS graphics will be on par with the MIGHTY 16 year old Neo Geo? I'm sure its just these screens. Heck, Metal Slug on GBA looks pretty damn good, for that matter.
Anybody whining for multiplat, suck it up and buy a DS like the rest of us have ;)
@DaiMacculate:
"Really? You don't think the DS graphics will be on par with the MIGHTY 16 year old Neo Geo?"
Not from what I've seen...
IIRC there was even a teaser video in which the sprites looked just as scrambled...The screens also have the original DS screen resolution, and the HUD doesn't look as bad as the rest of the sprites...
I'd say they really fucked that up, but there's still hope the final game will look better...
Raw-cat Lawn-char!
If its game play even remotely resembles the experiences of the other console offerings, then I'll be pleased with it. The cell phone versions are just awful, and I'd love to have a good, portable Metal Slug game.
i cannot wait.
I'd have to second that a PSP version would be great also. Come on, portable gaming is a haven for this kind of quick fun.
... who cares about Metal Slug?
Why don't you post news about the OTHER games?
There won't be a PSP version, or an XBLA/PSN/WiiWare version.
If you want it, just buy the DS game.
Sometime down the line I can almost assure you that SNK will release another arcade Metal Slug game, and it will get console ports.
What the world needs is another good portable metal slug. If you want to play metal slug on "the big screen," SNK just gave us Metal Slug Anthology, which included all the greats, and the previously-unreleased (on console) Metal Slug 6.
They just gave us Metal Slug 6. On consoles. Now it's time for a portable version.
@DaiMacculate: Have you even seen the DS's resolution? Look at the screenshots, they're self-evident, and the size of a DS screen. Shut the fuck up, the fans just want quality.
@Ashurahori: Hey you might calm the heck down there buddy. Again, what do you need, better than Neo Geo graphics? If thats what you're looking for then fine, but as a "fan" I would presume you know that Metal Slug up to 5 was on the original Neo Geo with a Raster resolution of 304x224 pixels (source:[en.wikipedia.org]), so I think the DS with 2 screens of 256 x 192 each isn't much of a step down, especially if they do vertical battles like I said in my first post. Also doubt that the DS will have problems matching/exceeding the 12mhz 68k CPU and Z80 audio chips in the NG (I have one and love it, not an attack on that venerable platform!), or the display hardware. I have Metal Slug for GBA (chinese copy :G:) and it looks at least as good as Metal Slug 1-3 as far as I'm concerned, on just one GBA or DS screen.
Again, if you're pissed because you expect something much more advanced, graphics-wise, then thats your right, but please don't speak as a fan of a series whose best games have all been in SD resolution if you're going to be that concerned with the sequel being in 720p or whatever number you imagine will somehow make it a better game. DS screenshots often look like ass compared to the final game, so I'll wait to judge until I see it, you feel free to keep ranting about a game thats not coming (MS 7 on consoles other than DS, at least this year), or buy the arcade version, or whatever will make this better for you...if thats telling me to "shut the fuck up" impotently, then feel free to do that as well.
@vaterunser: See the above response, but since you didn't tell me to shut the fuck up never mind the acidic tone ;)
On top of all that I would say Fahey said it looks great, I'll trust him over screenshots until I have it in my hand, then we'll see. Have you played Contra 4? Harder than most MS games IMO, and it looks really good on DS.
does that title look BAD ASS or what?! i love it.
@DaiMacculate: I pretty much completely agree with you. Since it's a simple 2D game game that is so easy to pick up and play for 5-10 minutes here and there, I'm glad it's on the DS. I'll find a lot more time to play it.
And as far as graphics... who cares? They have an identical style. I mean, the GBA one looked good enough for me. I had other problems with it, but the graphics was not one of them.
they stole that 7 from the next James Bond film.
