Last night, Electronic Arts threw a little party for the gathered game developers and various hangers on at the Mezzanine. About an hour into the party, EA's Neil Young took to the stage to introduce Will Wright who wouldn't, he was clear to point out, be talking about anything even remotely Spore related. Instead, Wright took to the stage to deliver a talk in the scatter-topic method that has earned him a small cult following, touching on everything from Godzilla and lunch boxes to James Bond and the abundance of Sims titles to hit the market.
It was as always, a treat to watch. It was also, as always, something that leaves you perhaps with less of an idea of what he's on about than before he started talking.
Check out the clip which shows the talk in all of it's more than 30-minutes glory and stay, at least, until you get to his now infamous Russian Space Minute.

Yeah, he kinda lost me there.
You lost me at Neil Young.
He also described something as being a "treat" in the previous post, think crecente was part of that drunk audience
He is very entertaining though. I loved that Russian Space Minute.
Over 30minutes, holy shit :P
Yeah, Harry Potter and Star Trek rules google :) With Mario and Pokemon, I don't wanna mention halo (first was great, thats it.)
lol @ carebears :P
I never knew they started out as cards :D Cool.
Sims overload!!! hehhe. I can't wait for Spore damn it, I loved the first Sims a lot, not second and I never bothered with expansion packs, first+nude patch was enough for me :P
Lightsabers are a verbs guys, good to know >.<
Hes really funny though. I'm enjoying it.
Im amazed I didnt get lost anywhere... also, a bit scared...
The show was absolutely great. Will answered my question about Sim Copter! He'd like to make a new one. I ask him to make a new Sim Copter game every chance I get. I really hope he gets around to it, with the same sort of fantastic genre-spanning integration as the original.
I also got some great advice from ex-gamespotter Ryan Davis, and I attempted to talk to you, Brian, but you were always engaged with someone else! Booo!
Lego is awsome :)Biohazard :P
Yeah, James Bond evil guys are awsome with underground bases, Usama the super villain, tss tss. But some James Bond movies are real, like the Spy rock from England used in russia :D
+ Watch video
Spaceminute with women peing on truck lol 21G's, holy shit. Russia is the best space nation, these guys have done amazing things, amazing. Just take a look at their space rover program.
People sure are drunk :P
Oh christ, I can actually see myself in the video. I DIDN'T SIGN A RELEASE YOU KNOW!
w00t to PDK reference! This guy really is funny... even sober!
that was brilliant, you can learn so much from Mr. Wright.
This speach is good commentary of society, the man knows what he is talking about. If you choose to spend the time watching this presentation, try to pay attention.
I bet some Sim City hardcore fans are happy about hes line about Sim city society.
Hmm, interesting about Walt Disney and Disney land and world. Hehhe, I wanna live in celebration town :P
3 channels, back in my day in my country we had 1 channel :( then 2...
Wow@tv stats, really gone downhill I suppose. Not surprised however.
The Cube would win, no doubt! And James bond. Something good in parents and dangerous mushrooms :P Star trek and twilight zone was so great, I need twilight zone dvd boxes.
There watched the whole thing, great stuff :) Funny guy!
@tripl333: Is it scary that I understood about 99% of what he was talking about? I think about that kind of stuff every day, I just dont get the chance to tell drunk game developers about it. Will Wright is a smart cookie.
I found myself totally absorbed in this after about4 minutes. I have to say I really enjoyed it ^_^. Also it kind of made me want to go watch some early 90's godzilla....,
That was quite the awesome clip.
It would be very interesting to chat with him. I can't help but be a little sad that he mostly only makes sims and sims related things.
Oh god I love Will Wright. He's awesome to watch speak, because you never have any idea where he's going with anything, but it's always interesting and awesome.
Well damn. Before I even got a minute into the vid I loved it because of the Datarock song. Was that actually played there or was that just Crecente being rad?
Wow. That was really neat. I understood it, and like any good nerd I've thought about a lot of that sort of stuff, but to articulate it clearly and quickly like that... yes, I'll jump on the "Will Wright is one smart cookie" bandwagon.
I'll have to add him to my "I'd love to have a chat with him" list.
Godzilla secured this video's level of awesome.
All it was missing was Gamera and "Gecko-Roman Wrestling"
And was that a shot from SE Lain at the very end?
Now I know the feeling of a true nerdgasm. Will Wright is the best.
I like that he threw in a screenshot from Lain when mentioning dystopian views.
Wow, I was amazed at how entertaining of a speaker he is. Thanks Kotaku, great day of content for you guys.
Very interesting, a little short though. Would've like to see him be able to go into depth on all the little thigns he touched on.
Will Wright is god.
Will is a brilliant man.
too long for me ... his nerdy talk gets me sleepy
@Waza: An impostor! Get 'em!
while I still don't know what he was getting at in the grand scheme of things, dude is a damn entertaining speaker. Also is the first time he has done the russian space minute, because I think it should become a staple of his speeches.
i really enjoy how he models his speeches in the same way he speaks of successful intellectual properties being modeled; in such a way that is a real joy to deconstruct and build into a bigger idea based on your own creative input. will wright definitely ranks up there in the ultra-minimal list of true developer genius that exists in the industry. this video made me come to the realization that maybe the reason i hated the lord of the rings movies but still loved the hobbet book was perhaps because peter jackson had already done the so much deconstructing of the amazing settings that tolkien imagined to the point where i was left with absolutely no creative freedom to reimagine the fantasy world in a lego inspired creative playful fashion. maybe i really do owe the lord of the rings trilogy as tolkien originally penned it a chance. and maybe i should break out my star wars legos and build more hybrid space shit.
@Adamk24: i agree. at first i was like "this seems boring" but then as i watched some how i was hanging on every word and look forward to nis next comparison or little fun fact or story.
i would pay to listen to will wright speak.
That was a great video. He is really an amazing dude.
@Erwin: I'm right behind you man, lets get him!
Will Wright: Alpha Geek.
Hmm, that sounds familiar...
Will Wright is pretty damn funny. I wasn't aware of that.
He used the word 'accrete' in a sentence (@_@)
My IQ just increased by a factor of 9000
Every public speaker should have a Russian space minute.
Gaaaaaaahhh.. I must learn english to understand stuff like that one. I only understand isolated words! ..arggh.
How the hell does he does this? It feels like a stream of consciousness, but he obviously planned and rehearsed everything he said. I want to know his secret to memorizing everything he wants to say!
Bravo!
such great points and perspective. I agree with him on everything hes ever said ever in history. I wish he was my daddy, if ya know what i mean.
Gah.. I want to hit that camera man.
That was amazing. If you think about it, he could have easily completed it by saying "and that's why I'm making Spore" but he didn't.
Also, Mr. Cameraman? Speaker OR the Screen, Speaker OR the Screen!
This man sure does know his Shallots.
That was the most amazing powerpoint presentation i've ever seen. I am now a Will Wright cult member!
This man is so intelligent. I love watching these 30 minute videos.
So wait....when we watch something we 'download them into our minds'? SHIT! DON'T LET THE MPAA AND RIAA KNOW!
@Siegeman: In my defense, I shot this with my point and click camera... and no tripod.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZ........*wakes up* what he is still talking? Damn he is the Al Gore of video games.
It's clear that he's brilliant and I think he had some excellent points, but scattershot really is the only way to describe it. He could have really tied some of those points together into a cohesive set of suggestions for game design, but he really left it up to the listener to piece anything together.
I hope some of the game makers in the audience got something out of it.
@Kegwen. The scatter brain method is how his brain actually works. He doesn't want to fill in the blanks for you. He present and idea and he want you to play with it. Using his terms "downloaded into your brain" and think about it after his power point presentation.
Now...tell me...after you watch it...have you thought about it? Have you gone over what he said in your brain?
Congratulations, you have played the Will Wright Power Point game, please leave a donation of $60+ dollars at the door for the next Sims game! LOL
*shivers*
Will Wright Present: Sims: Power Point.
*shivers*
Ahem...moving on...
The man is smart in the sense that he engage us into this long power point, that was like watching a tr
