Taku Murata, general manager of Square-Enix's research and development division, announced at today's GDC session that the company has dropped the White Engine name for its cross-platform game engine. Squenix is now pitching it as Crystal Tools, showing off a fancy new logo that extends the Final Fantasy brand even further.
While the internal, companywide development platform was originally understood to be built for PlayStation 3 development (specifically, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy versus XIII), it is being designed with multiple platforms, including the Xbox 360 and PC, in mind. Murata also confirmed that a version is being readied for the Wii, which is still very early, but we don't expect it to kick out visuals on par with the PS3.

Comments
Can't get it working on the PS3, but you're gonna do it on the Wii?
Kay.
In before "FIRST SIGN OF ANOTHER LOST EXCLUSIVE" claims from Xbots.
I hope that FF has a new fighting system to go along with the new graphics engine.
the only thing I want to hear come out of squenix mouth is the release date of FF13. Otherwise GET BACK TO WERK!!!!
@king0v10GU: agreed
FFXIII for 360 and Wii confirmed.
NOT!
*punches fanboys*
It's time for everyone favorite rumor to come back!
Honestly though, a third party developer having a multi-platform development engine is a good thing and can only lead to fedoras made with money. Just like Capcom.
lyk omgzz!1 FFXIII for Xbox! yay
Yeah, no. First MGS4, no all the fanboys will be going on about this.
the way its worded makes it sound like FFXIII is coming to Wii and xbox :o
@Xaltmas: Now, not no x_x
White engine is being used for other games than FFXIII, this shouldn't be a surprise.
Oh great here we go. Hopefully some people will think a little more about the engine being used for "other" games rather than "OMGZ FFXIII ON 360/WII CONFIRMED!"
You know those kinds of comments are coming...
OMGZ FFXIII ON 360/WII CONFIRMED!
Square-enix do this on purpose - they knew when they said things like that people would automatically assume its coming to other consoles.
Until the next "behind closed doors" FMV trailer that says ps3 only
Tbh i think people would rather hear a release date of FFXIII than about the engine! :D
well in the very least it probably means SOME square game will be made for xbox and wii
There are FIVE FFXIII games planned if I'm not mistaken. I think the two announced ones will remain PS3 exclusive. I think at least one of the others will go on Wii exclusive. I doubt 360 support from a company whose primary profits are going to come from the Japanese market.
@Sparx:
OMGZ FFXIII ON 360/WII CONFIRMED!
@giovonti: the last remnant or dragon quest swords not count as 360 and wii games?
New Act Raiser please.
Continuing the tradition of awkwardly named Japanese RPG engines, battle systems, subtitles, and general everything.
Yawn, JRPG games...
bring on Gears 2 and MGS4
SE making Wii games should be kool. I wonder how their designers will push the use of the Wiimote? Will it be innovative or just another boring shoe-in of it as a side note to the game?
@ajay42:
One of them is going to 360, one the wii, one one cellphones. two for ps3?
Can't wait until Witzbold considers "OMG CONFIRMED ON PLATFORM XXX" as ban material. =P
Bah, White Engine is a better name. Or maybe they were worried people would take it to have racist overtones.
@Scapple
Gears 2 = 360
MGS4 = PS3
I hope you have both..:)
@giovonti: Chocobo's Dungeon 2, FFCC:Simcity, and the real FFCC game eye you suspiciously.
Current-gen Ogre Battle, please.
Final Fantasy VIII Remake for Wii confirmed? (yep it's VIII, not VII)
Final Fantasy XIII for 360 confirmed?
xDDDDDDDDD
Actually I like the support that S-E is giving to Nintendo... even with engines! That means better games :P
OMGZ FFXIII ON 360/WII CONFIRMED!
ALL RITE!
i know not funneh
Oh, you clever PS3 fans with your preemptive comments. You assume people actually give a shit!
:)
@manjikengo: I meant the two already going to PS3 (FFXIII and FFXIII versus) the remaining three might breakdown the way you suggest, I'm just not sure about exclusive 360 support for even one game from a Japanese market focused company.
I want Last Remnant on pc...... and all the other games too XD but that's the first to be relesed so...
Not mentioning any TITLES, but its good to see S-E moving toward a more multiplatform approach. Looking at how Activision, EA and Capcom especially are raking in the money from it, it would make bad business sense to not see the value of it.
Now if they could only actually RELEASE a high profile game again ...
@Scrapple: Yawn war games...although both look sweet. :O
@ajay42:
I'd assume it'd be the way I mentioned. As of right now there is a cellphone game, Agito. So there are 3 more fabula nova crystalis games to find out about.

@Fluffy22: No actually the way it's worded makes me think of a new Crystal Chronicles for the Wii, not multi-platform FFXIII.
-Captain, money hats spotted on radar!
-Activate the troll torpedoes! Hurry!!
-LOOK OUT, SHOVELWARE!!! GET -kkkzzzzz.............
Wii coming to FFXIII confirmed! Oops..got that backwards. You get the idea.
I keed. But it's nice to see Squeenix branch out. Obviously it's not for the money, but for the fans. Damn..got that one backwards too.
Dont mean no harm (Ps fanboy thru and thru)but im really starting to doubt the success of the PS3 in the coming years regardless of analysts predictions. It seems as though more and more Japanese companies are jumping unboard the 360. Dont know why considerin the hardware kicks rocks (mad face). But with this and the fact that Tales of Vesperia is going 360 and now the fact that the White Engine(Crystal tools)if only part of it is coming to Wii really brings suspicion to people givin up on the Ps3. I'm a major jrpg gamer (love games with actuall stories), had a 360 it RROD'd and i sold it cause i hate that I spent 400 on a console that stayed working for 3 frekin' months (before people start sayin that i dnt take care of my stuff I've never in the 20yrs of my life had anything break down on me in less than 6 years havin it, what can i say im a clean freak!) Alls i gots to say is if we dnt get some real JRPG's soon (Folklore dnt count) i may have to switch back over to wii which has about 4 or 360 which has at least 5:(
@cowondinosaur: I think they've already confirmed a new CC, even beyond the Wiiware one, maybe? Am I confused? Maybe?
In other happy news, at least this means some sort of RPG's for wii. It's hurting for 'em, and Dragon Quest Swords was just salt on the wound, really. Thank God for the new Tales of Symphonia.
@anime10121: Your wall-of-text ninjitsu is masterful. Sheesh!
Last Remnant last I heard was using the Unreal Engine 3.
@manjikengo: Actually. It could be. One for DS, one for Wii, AND if there's six then that means one for 360. The DS is a money printing machine not to be ignored.
@Kyle81: seriously, if they put that much into it, id imagine/like to see it put to use on other platforms as well.
@Nexus6: that's true, i forget that detail... well more reason to bring it to pc :P
Just speculation and i have a very big imagination. All they said it was desinged to use in all systems.FF13 is still an exclusive for the ps3 i think. I think the tools will be used for a dragon warrior titles on the 360 and as for the wii in the crystal chronicles game due out sometime soon with the launch of the ff series coming out on Nintendo's wii-ware along side with the wii's ff game. Or maybe it's just for a new mmorpg they are planning to run on all systems again as they did with ffxi.
Sounds like a cost-savings issue. If all platforms are running off the same engine, then the company can use a single set of tools for development across all platforms. No need to create multiple things for multiple engines.
Also easier on the team management, as you could then move people between teams for different platforms without having to retrain them.
@Kyle81:
I agree lol. Only surprise is the renaming of it haha.
@anime10121: You do the engine has been multiplatform the who
