SimCity Societies Gets Destinations

It wouldn't be a Sim game without expansion packs, and come this May SimCity Societies is officially a Sim game. EA has announced the first expansion for the latest version of the city building sim, SimCity Societies Destinations, which gives your sims a place to go once they get tired of being crushed under the heel of your totalitarian regime. Players will be able to create a wide variety of vacation spots, from sun-drenched beaches to gigantic theme parks. The expansion comes complete with over 100 new buildings to help distract your sims from the fact that back home you've set all of their houses on fire.

  • Is this the expansion that makes the game fun?

  • I haven't played any Sims anything since The Sims: Hot Date.... just too many expansions to keep up w/. I haven't played Sim City since Sim City 2000.

  • I've been craving Sim City. Hey, is there wildlife in those seas?

  • Hmm, the fire part seems fun.

  • Sim Ant was awesome... If you let the spider survive for long enough, it would leave, then come back a little while later and shoot all the ants w/ a big red laser.. that was fun.

  • running on DX10?

  • Doesn't matter how much they expand it the game will still suck. Simcity with all the micromanagement and strategy taken out is not simcity, it's just like any other game devoid of depth.

  • But but but Yahtzee said it was boring! Hence no one is allowed/able to form an opinion contradictory to that, or glean an ounce of enjoyment from the game!

  • So is this game fun or what? All I heard was smack by sim city fans that hate the fact they made it easier and more about society etc. But I like that, so is the game good? If it is I'll buy it, he screens look good.

@Irenicus-the one and only: lol, I didn't even know the game was out yet :D

  • Damn, here I was hoping for a diagonal street expansion. You know, that feature that makes your city look somewhat real. That feature that was in Sim City 3 and 4.

I could sorta get behind the society focus, but the gameplay they went with made no sense.. Such as the cost of some things versus what you get with them and how you would sometimes have to purchase and place far too many of one type of building to balance out your needs..

A shame really, if they had applied the snazzy graphics and new idea's (some of them) to the old proven formula it would've been far better.

  • Too bad I ran out of space in my city, stayed in 970,000 citizens and reached a million and uninstalled... Simcity 4 was more fun, and that game was pretty much a 7.0...

I bet Spore will be the new Simcity and Sims mixed up. fun again.

  • @Candlejack: lol

  • I have no city management skills. In the Maxis titles, my landscape is always peppered with flashing, crumbling or deserted zones. If you are a Sim City Idiot like me, and find the precision stockbroker skills required to build a decent town in SC4 too difficult or too boring or both, Societies is quite a lot of fun, in fact the most I've ever had with a game of this type. If you dislike the term "casual gamer", or are a mega-power-ultra Sim Stockbroker, stay far away. You will have little fun and find it absurdly simple.

The big mistake EA made was piggybacking SCS onto the Sim City franchise, and dragging its hardcore adherents into a place they (obviously) didn't want to go. But speaking personally, I'll continue having fun watching my Sims stumble drunkenly out of the local tavern down the street to their house (next to the Church), and then watch them run in terror as their trailer park burns down mysteriously the next day and the fire station (located conveniently across the street) takes no action to stop the carnage. Evilville, you are my home.

  • @Sustenance: You sold the game to me :)

I'm gonna have to pick it up now.

  • Argh, here's to hoping that EA doesn't blast expansions out like they did w/ the Sims; Simcity 4 only had *one* expansion and it was an excellent addition to the game.

Then again, maybe a more pertinent question to ask is: does anybody care about Simcity Societies in the first place?

  • This game was boring as hell. There are no real goals, no real challenge and essentially, no fun.

SimCity 4 was gimped compared to SimCity 3000. Why is the quality of games rising and falling like the tide?

SimCity was great, SimCity 2000 was awesome, SimCity 3000/Unlimited was the pinnacle of awesome, SimCity 4 was decent, SimCity Societies BLOWS...

Gee, I guess this is what happens when an EA tag is stuck on the box.

  • i bought this game a few days ago, but im having trouble getting into it. the tutorial was kinda meh. its a nice looking game and sounds like fun but i dont get what im doing lol

  • Expansions?? What??

How about a patch that shows how big a building is BEFORE you try to place it on the map?

...or just a patch to keep the game from crashing every hour?

  • WHY?

    WORST SIM GAME EVER.

  • @Shadowstitch: That bad? :(

  • If it's like a Sims 2 expansion pack, it'll have about three dozen bugs that might get patched just before the next expansion pack comes out. Also the latest in Sony SecuROM DRM.

  • @Shadowstitch: amen! when i could get the game to run, I had some fun with it. BUT the last dozen or so times I tried to run the game, the camera just kept scrolling toward me until it hit the edge of the map, then just sits at the edge, bumping against it. game is broken.

  • Wow.. I just noticed that octupus has a city up it's ass.

  • I'm sorry, down it's throat.. Silly sea life.

  • No word on a real Sim City 5 yet then I take it?

  • @Anthropomancer:

If it weren't for his totally biased Halo 3 review I'd probably be going along with this.

I was pretty excited when the game was announced. if this expansion allows me to make Orgasmic-Land, the worlds gratest themepark, in Happysville, and then make it an Enslavement Camp where people go to be brainwashed and turned into slaves, then I might buy the game. Or you know, download it and see if I like it.
