Time for some fun, because numbers, heck, they're fun. Especially so for Microsoft, who were throwing big numbers around like they were going out of style during their GDC address this morning, using them to highlight the success of everything from DLC to achievements to Halo 3's saved films.
Achievements: As of today, Xbox 360 users have earned themselves over one billion achievements. Not points. Achievements.
Xbox Live Marketplace: The XBL Marketplace? More like XBL money-printing machine. 360 users have spent over $250 million on DLC since the console's launch, which when you consider the minimal expenses related to content is a massive turnover for both Microsoft and anyone else who has DLC on the service.
Rock Band: There's been just over three million Rock Band downloads on Xbox Live alone since the game launched. For a $169 dollar game available only in North America, that's a lot.
Halo 3: You kids sure love your stupid suicide vids. Microsoft reckon over 100,000 Halo 3 films are uploaded every day, which they say is 30% more than are uploaded onto YouTube. Egads.
XNA: This XNA dealio might be bigger than anyone thought. Microsoft reckon that the XNA Game Studio software has been downloaded 800,000 times, and while some of that's bound to be repeat offenders and people who downloaded it, freaked out and never touched it again, there's still got ot be a healthy pool of talent amongst that number.

Achievement whore much?
mmmm those were some tasty numbers.
@Huxle: sdf much?
I am very tempted to write first but I won't.
It's great to see people investing on Rock Band, since it's the best music game out there.
I want that achievement, and I don't even have an Xbox
"people who downloaded it, freaked out and never touched it again"...
Plunkett... are you watching me?!
And all of them don't matter at all!
thats a lot of acheivements.
@ggodo: That achievement is the achievement of them all :P
that 250million number is fucking crazy, I guess I'm one of those with everything I bought when I had a 360 :( But I'm starting to hate DLC and DD more and more everyday.
And Halo3 videos, wow... Is there really that much material to make of that game? lol I bet 50k of those are someone teabagging someone else :P
Yawn... What does this mean to me?
I don't recal how many XBOX live users there are but if you figure 5,000,000 users then that's 200 points each. yes? Not much per user really.
The only thing I think when I see the millions made by DLC is I wonder how many millions worth of content is unusable.
Can thank two of my buddies for that.
Thats nice, no one cares lol. how about fix your broken ass system cause i already bought 2 360's. how about it Microsoft?
Looks like Microsoft's gotten some achievements of their own! Now quick, someone play me a rimshot!
Hmm...let's do a little math.
There are roughly 18 million 360 owners. I remember reading that 66% of all 360 owners are connected to the internet.
So...that's 11 million, 880 thousand.
So, 1 billion achievements divided by 11million, 880 thousand equals....
85 Achievements points for every person on XBL.
@Huxle: @SAKY: Deep. Both of you, real deep.
@DMeisterJ: It means people are doing shit and being active.
I think that Microsoft has a huge chance to cash in on a "YouTube"-like service for their Live games. What's a few more bandwidth bills for a company like that.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: Hmm... I was under the impression that it was 1 billion achievements unlocked, not achievement points, I need to look that up.
Didn't they say that the $250m was just in extra content - it didn't include the video marketplace.
@DMeisterJ: Nothing; go back to bed.
3 million Rock Band downloads already is insanity.
So's Halo 3's 100.000 uploads a day. I know I am addicted to saved films and screenshots but that's a huge number.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: It's 85 achievements per person, not 85 points. Not a billion gamerscore but a billion achievements, right?
@P.N.03: LOL! It took me a while to get it, but that was hilarious.
i cant get that XNA thing to work. I downloaded it but then it says im not a member or some sort of nonsense. And this is the one just to play the games, not make them. I'll fiddle with it some more though.
But are theres numbers North America related or world wide?
Big numbers. Yet to get my hands on Rock Band.
I would love to play "Sick Sick Sick".
@lionkitten: Assuming MS didn't make a mistake with that slide in the picture then yes.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: couldn't contain myself, hasn't been a ban Moday in a while and it's overdue. :P
One billion over achievers.
Pretty good. Seeing as, depending on how they're presented, numbers can be the strongest argument anyone has in this industry. Well, as far as consoles go.
so what do you get for doing this ? I think the whole achievments and accomplishment thing is quite stupid.
"360 users have spent over $250 million on DLC and movies since the console's launch"
I guess it can help with the RROD funds!
@JackTretton: Yeah, but frogger proved people love a high score.
@JackTretton:
i wish all of your breed and kind would vanish. Because it seems like every other blogpost has someone saying their genius opinion on how they think achievements are stupid as if they effect the game or someones personal enjoyment at all
i have close to 10,000 achievment points on my gamertag!
Its not saying how many points have been acquired all together, but how many individual achievements themselves have been unlocked. Why is everyone bringing in the amount of points per average anyway?
@KeroseneClimax: hmm...
@JackTretton: Nothing particularly wrong with getting achievements, it's just a part of the game. Knowing you accomplished something supposedly challenging isn't so bad. It's when you become a neurotic compulsive completionist that likes to scream at everyone about what you did, is when it becomes a problem.
@DMeisterJ: IT IS THE HARBINGER OF YOUR DOOM, FODDER! MUHUHAHA!
@lionkitten: @tnx3: Hmmm...Okay....So it's 85 achievements per person.
The 360 has an attach rate of roughly 9. That means 11,880,000x9= 106,920,000 Xbox Games (assuming no XBLA games were used to obtain achievements, which is clearly not true, but let's ignore it for the sake of the math.)
1,000,000,000 \ 106,920,000 =
9.4 achievements per game, per person.
With an average of 39 acievements per game, that comes out to roughly...
25% of all achievements in every 360 game ever sold being unlocked, assuming it's universal.
@KeroseneClimax: hey well obama begs to differ. 2 billion it is! =P
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB:
Huh?
It's actual achievements, not achievement points.
Which works out at about 200 achievements per person....
Now Ive ownt 40 games...and got about 1k achievements...
So actually...that isn't that bad. :/
100,000 Halo filsm uploaded every day? Why do I have a feeling that Microsoft just pulled that number out of thin air? Actually since only microsoft could know the numbers for all those other 'statistics' they could easily have made them all up. Take it with a grain of salt folks.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: Kirby I wouldnt be chastising folks on the grounds of a comment is deep or not in relation to your own posting history.
@Witzbold: Burn!
Achievers that are achieving. The Dude abides.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: Too much math.
That's a whole lotta of e-penis.
Billions and billions of achievements. Ahh forget it I'm going back to look at the eclipse.
@Witzbold: Now, I know my post history has all the depth of a puddle, but can I at least call doobymoo out?
BTW Witz, what's with the harshness towards kirby lately? Did I miss something?
@JackTretton: What do you get for finishing a game in the traditional sense of the word?
Squat as well. At least achievements leave some sort of trace of what you did and didn't do in the game.
@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: Achievements... not achievements points. I expected more from my cherry-bottom sexy penguin :(
