Microsoft has something big planned for XNA at GDC, an announcement expected to hit during the company's keynote tomorrow morning. Nestled in Microsoft's space at Moscone Center's north hall is the above display, something that the company doesn't want anyone to see until corporate VP John Schappert hands out the official details. The moment Schappert's talk is over, at 11:30 AM PST, the curtain is lifted and game developers everywhere are enlightened, bowled over, etc. At least, that's what we expect Microsoft's fantasy version of the whole thing to be.
So what's behind the curtain? Expect our best guess about what the company will be announcing for Live in just a bit.

11:30am?
Man I really have no clue.. but it must be SOMETHING worthwhile, givin the secrecy.
Maybe a new Scene It! controller! .. I keed I keed.
Shrouds of secrecy are always fun!
They've actually instituted a billing system that allows you to sign over your soul.
Behind the shroud is the glass containment field and the tormented souls of all of the users who have already prepaid for this fancy new lifetime XBL service.
The service includes lifetime XBL access (access may not actually be lifetime, subject to outages, and may be revoked at any time), a special icon only available to subscribers, and a whopping 250 gamer point achievement called "Choosing us over those bitches at Sony"
S'my guess at least.
Hmm...microsoft...giant pink lights...
Must be the new pink color scheme for the RRoD! :D
Maybe Microsoft's answer to something like LittleBigPlanet, I'm guessing...
@Zenian: PRoD!
HD-DVD with a big sword run through it!
LOL... I'm trying to control my expectations here but I feel like something big might happen :)
If I had to take an actual guess, I'd say they're doing a virtual world like home.
Whatever it is, it sure would be funny if the system it was running on RRoD.
What is XNA sorry I am an idiot?
Didn't someone from microsoft attend some virtual world conference/seminar thing? Could be what they'd have in store.
Please please please say that it will now be free to deploy to a 360. Please...
@Zenian: Damn. Beat me to it. :-P
Blue-ray player. Or, not.
@JustJake: XNA is their free development studio for Windows and XBox360.
Microsoft has quite the reputation for reveals.
I never said it was good though...
Looks like a new SKU
Wouldn't it be funny if they had something planned along the lines of "XNA developers now allowed to use and publish through HD-DVD for home-made Xbox360 games", which is why they're hiding it now so they can change it at night when nobody's watching? :P
Wow, I've never heard those HD-DVD jokes before!
Fools! Obviously, what with all the ludicrous pictures of the PS3-to-George Foreman Grill rolling about the internet, Microsoft has decided to release a new device that plugs into the exhaust and heat sinks on your current 360, and works like one of those Nu Wave Ovens. Why bother trying to create a Home for Live when you could roast succulent turkey!
its gonna be youtube of games for consoles.so you can make a game in xna upload and have others download play and rate it.thats the rumor(1up podcast said this) anyways and i want it to be true D:
Their announcing Blu-Ray for the 360. Only not really,It would be funny though.
since I don't own a 360 (yet anyway) I don't think anything good will come out of this Shroud of Secrecy. But I hope its something big and exciting.
the next xbox!!
a new SKU!
maybe not
@fulgore66: No. XNA Game Studio Express is the free version of XNA. XNA itself is the Framework, sorta like DirectX, that Xbox games are built from.
@Candlejack: lol
It better be a megaton, not enough of those yet, please GDC don't dissapoint me, atleast the 1up podcast on Friday will be great :)
I know what it is, the 360 Blu-ray disc player! (You know Sony will love the royalties when this happens)
Man.. I don't get to SF till 10. Hope I can get out of the airport and checked into my hotel in time to check this out.
My guess is that XNA toolkit will now support multiplay over xbox live arcade.
I'm confused; 11:30 AM PST would mean we should have heard about it 45 minutes ago.
The BBC reporter that spotted the RROD stuffed & mounted
@okenny :): Ok. Technically, you are correct. And that's the best kind of correct!
Probably something completely unexciting and useless.
XNA games on Zune?
BTW, some commenters may need reminding: This is specific announcement for Community related to XNA. It has nothing to do with Bluray or HD-DVD, etc...
@BD:
"HD-DVD with a big sword run through it!"
You may be right hmmm...
Bill Gates in a bikini!
Can't someone just bring a really bright flashlight and shine it through the curtain?
No Security Guards?
All they can do is throw you out (with the scoop of GDC)
Where are the Gonzo Papparatizi when you need them?
Driving Brittany Crazy(er) I guess.
@Candlejack: lmao
The RROD and HD-DVD jokes aren't funny, but people's reaction to them are.
Um, I have no idea what they are planning. Giant pnk lights always mean something good I guess.
Well if your a student they are now offering XNA 2.0 and Visual Studio Pro free. So it can not be that. Hopefully it something really good.
handheld.
It's probably just a video of Cliffy B and Jade Raymond playing two-hand touch. Football, that is.
@houkah: That was already released with Game Studio Express 2.0 along with a plethora of other features. I keep hearing "the Youtube of gaming" thrown around.
It's Frogger: Championship Edition!
@Norellicus: After tomorrow's keynote.
My guess, a baby pink 360 for devs.
Maybe that new gyrating peripheral for the "SEXBOX-360"?
I see something like a black box and a square glass. Something is in it, but I wonder what...
Probably hiding the Xbox 360 that went and got itself all broken.

@WillW:
I second the handheld vote /
