WTF, sure, but lovely WTF! Here's a look at the BioWare developed Sonic RPG for the DS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. We like BioWare, and the screens look nice enough, and we really liked Sonic — well, before. Definitely interested in this.

Why.. just why...
I think I just barfed in my....yup....just barfed a little in my mouth.
So this is how Sega lets the guy go down? Sad. I thought it was better to burn out (Mario) than fade away (Sonic)...at least that's what N Young said.
Look, if Bioware can't make Sonic respectable again I think the community as a whole can just agree that the franchise doesn't exist any more. Sort of like how my friends and I agree that we don't actually remember seeing 'Highlander 2' in the theaters.
I wouldn't even take the time to put that on my R4 card.
@BD: People said the same about the Mario RPGs, and they turned out awesome. I still have decently high hopes for this one. I mean, it's BioWare for one.
@the-hypnotoad: Gotta agree. If we need to have faith in someone to do something decent with Sonic, I'd say it's BioWare.
Either that or get the team together that did Sonic Adventure Battle 2 for DC/GC
Its sad when you cringe just looking at the characters...ugh.
The graphics are clean & pretty, and this looks good. But seriously... what crazy man decided it was a good idea to make a Sonic RPG? Very weird.
@sadkermit: Mario...burned... out? What?
Wow, I didn't think it was possible to be even less interested in Sonic than I am now but...damn
It's Bioware, I'll play it and I'll love it.
@baked ham:
He's speaking truths to me. Hasn't been a Mario game I've wanted since Mario 64.
@SnakeCL: Clearly then, the millions of people playing and enjoying Mario games since are wrong!
@Furious_Liver: Are you talking about the overall appearance of the characters in the game? Because I think they did a pretty good job making the game look pretty. There's no reason to cringe unless you don't like the Sonic characters in any game.
Anyway, I like the way this game is turning out. I hope it's as good as Mario RPG was. Plus it's Bioware, so I have high hopes.
@SnakeCL: I loved both Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario... but that's me, I guess. I love joy. What can I say.
Sonic RPG=Phailure
Why would they do this? When this game turns out horrible, can we please kill Sonic?
@SnakeCL: And besides, doesn't burning out involve ... you know, being unsuccessful in some way? Last I heard, the Mario franchises were still selling very well.
give it a chance guys. These are three non-action screens. Im going to give Bioware a chance. I'm just hoping they include some of the characters from the older Sonic Universe: Bunny Rabbot, Rotor, etc.
It's Bioware! Who cares what characters and genre they use. It's going to be of the highest quality. You people act like this is your first time hearing about this game.
Some of these comments, wow! Just wow!
@baked ham: I definitely wouldn't say the franchise had burned out when the games are still enjoying strength on a critical and financial level. So it pretty much is just a few isolated peoples' opinions. And it looks like Nintendo isn't losing much sleep over that tiny minority, either.
i hate the art for all the new sonic games, this one included. why does it have to be so 'pastel-y?
what was so wrong with how sonic 2 looked? dark in most places and vibrant red, greens and blues in others? it's annoying that the colour scheme has skewed so much to a more bland look on the DS...
This game looks good... first Sonic game I've been wanting to get since Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast. I used to be a huge Sonic Fan, hope this turns out to be the shot in the arm Sonic needs.
Oh, I didn't mean as in Mario is burned out, just saying that the path N took with their mascot was far more productive. (and some of us are bruned out on him)
Of course it seems they give a damn about their main PC. Seems Sage just despises theirs.
I should learn to convey thoughts better, but that takes effort!
Geez, some people are so quick to abandon all hope.
I'm gonna reserve my judgment until there is more to go on, but I have faith in Bioware making it at least playable - something the recent majority of Sonic titles has been lacking in. From these screens though, I can't see much to criticize.
i wish there was a new sonic adventure..... that was a great sonic game
@sadkermit: *Sega
Oh ye of little faith, Bioware will make you all believers. Mark my words.
Those graphics are unbelievable. Seriously, I don't believe the DS is rendering them.
My soul hurts looking at this game.
I must wash my soul with bleach.
Sonic = fail! C'mon Bioware make me eat my words.
What the hell is with all the hate going on here? Looks fine to me. It's a Bioware RPG people, fer chrissakes! It excels on gameplay.
Sheesh.
This game is gonna be dope, seems like a lot of irrational hate here for a game that no one has played. BIOWARE people! BIOWARE!
Whats wrong with some of the commentors here? Bioware has yet to make a game that was truly terrible and these pictures look really good. I would like to see some gameplay but it looks like this could be the second best game to feature Sonic (the first would be Smash Bros Brawl).
A week or so ago when IGN had a bunch of pics I remember being saying how impressed they were. Damn are people negative here.
Prettyyyy. Characters could be a little sharper though.
Why sonic though? Bioware should do an orginal IP on the DS. Well here's hoping this sells well so they have incentive to do one in the future.
It'll be great! why? Bioware, an Ouedan type battle system, and awesome graphics?? Count me in!! I haven't looked this forward to a sonic game since....er.....um.....since a good sonic game!
Why Sonic? Probably because SEGA was looking for someone to get their franchise out of the gutter and into the hands of a few thousand (million?) fans.
I agree with the general sentiment here. I am willing to give this a chance, but if they f#%k this up Sonic is dead to me. DEAD I SAY!!
@BassForever: Bioware has yet to make a game that was "truly terrible"? I can't even think of a game they made that wasn't "totally awesome". They're easily one of the best developers out there right now, and they have an absolutely spotless track record so far.
This game will probably own. Hard. But that won't save the Sonic franchise. It'll just mean there'll be some good paper-mario-esq RPGs out there featuring Sonic and his loser friends.
How anyone can think that a Sonic RPG by Bioware is a bad idea 11 years after the Mario RPG from Squaresoft (and the subsequent Paper Mario games by Intelligent Studios) is beyond me. Buncha Sonic haters.
@sadkermit:
Mario burn out? Last time I checked the second highest rated game of all time was from last year AND IT WAS MARIO. Quit your trolling and discuss what's important here:
OMFG BIOWARE AND SONIC! It's an interesting juxtaposition, on one hand you have a fleeting mascot and on the other an acclaimed rpg developer. I wonder how they are going to incorporate the speed of Sonic in an RPG?
Speaking as a lifelong Sonic fan, I've suffered more than most as I've watched my favourite hedgehog slowly die. But if the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon has taught us anything, it's that the Sonic and his friends can really shine when they're given a little love and attention. The writers for that show had a genuine passion for the characters. They made eco-warriors look cool... not easy!
If Bioware can recreate even a little bit of that magic, I'll be happy.
Wow...I think Bioware might be able to do the impossible and make a good Sonic game again...
In other words, this looks awesome and I want to play it.
What the hell is with some of you people bashing Sonic RPG? You say Bioware can't make a respectable Sonic game and not giving them a chance. Play the damn game and see for yourselves.
Love Bioware, love rpgs but hate Sonic... What to do? =/
Sonic games that are NOT developed by Sonic Team (or Traveller's Tales, though that company has improved tremendously as of late) tend to be at least halfway decent, and usually quite good.
Examples: Sonic 2 (widely considered the best of the series), the Sonic Advance series, Sonic Rush.
Bioware is a very, very credible developer with a ridiculously good reputation, and the game looks polished and clean. There is no legitimate reason (yet) to be worried.
Big the Cat? As long as there aren't any fishing minigames REQUIRED to beat the game...
Monies to by corndogs plz!
A sonic RPG sounds like a good idea on the paper. But i have to say, seeing these screens with absolutely horrid graphics makes me sad :(
@Jindujun: What? The game looks pretty good graphically if you ask me.
This game will probably be the best Sonic game in a long time, I have faith in Bioware.
