An Associated Press business article, dedicated mostly to the impending conclusion of that stupid, distracting "format war", has buried in its conclusion some PS3 sales figures. According to the piece, Sony have now sold 10.5 million PS3 consoles since launch. Which is good news for them, as it puts them squarely on track to meet their goal of selling 11 million by the end of March, a target they set themselves last December. Oh, before you go, those who like to dabble in the odd bit of conjecture and speculation should note that it's been Sony policy for a while now to count "sold" as sold, not shipped.

Tell the man with the PS3 to get off Kaz`s foot.
Kaz is very happy, apparently.
There's a Ridge Racer joke in there somewhere, but I won't make it.
Hilarious picture.
That is the best picture ever! Congrats PS3 on 10.5, I might get one of you later this year.
Nice.
Wow, I must really be out of the loop here. Up until now, I was still under the impression they had barely sold 6 million.
Seems like just yesterday people were counting the nails in Sony's coffin... ^_^ Oh well, more games for everyone.
not bad sony.. not bad at all.
Expect more to come.
since their goal is 11 mil what does the 11 millionth customer win?
Congrats. I'm glad i might be able to play with more people online. Not that there isn't enough already. Either way i hope this is a good year for Sony. When is Sony's announcement or meeting?
Just out of curiosity, does anybody know what numbers MSoft and Nintendo are at yet? Just for comparison.
Either way, an impressive number.
@Witzbold: He must have caused some MASSIVE DAMAGE.
@GodzillaVsJapan:
A lifetime supply of Shame. /flamebait
Didn't they lower their expectations to only 9.5 million a month ago? How fast did the 360 get to 10million?
@GodzillaVsJapan: Another PS3
Nice job sony looks like this year is gonna be good year for sony.
Keep it up.
I always knew that scrappy little system had the stuff.
That pic screams mainstream :P
So 10+mill, grats Sony, it has been a rough year. Most you deserved though ;)
Now just 7mill behind the 360, thats not a big of enough gap for the 360 to come in second place. I hope they roll out something big for GDC. 2008=Sony's year no doubt, of course Wii wins, but no need to mention Wii right? Thats already set in stone.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: Microsoft was at 18 million at the end of last year, Nintendo is obviously ahead of them both but I don't know by how much.
Awesome pic. Stringer and Kaz look like the big guy with the PS3 just told a good fanboy burn.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: Well, going by ol' VG Chartz, you're looking at..
Wii: 21.53mil
360: 17.03mil
So, add or subtract a few hundred thousand and that's roughly what they're at.
Who taught Sony how to count systems sold... You sell so many more when you count ones that you're considering manufacturing in a few months...
Also, why is the low rent Reggie Fils-Aime buying a PS3!?
@TOWER_JUNKIE: This is world wide I would assume.
Sony would see more sales if they brought back proper BC.
Good for Sony, I dont own a PS3 but I intend to buy one eventually. If only it was'nt so darn expensive, in the meantime the 360 and Wii will keep me company.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: Wii is 22mill if I'm not misstaken and MS is 17mill. Thing is, all Wii sells, the 360 is counted to retail as well but they ain't all sold like the Wii.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: VgChartz says 360 = 17 mil and Wii = 21.5 mil. But then again that is VgChartz.
@Witzbold: But sales have been up since they removed the BC.
Good for Sony, I'm sure they're happy. I bet their stock holders are as well. How long before the obligatory "sold to retailers, not customers" comment, although it says otherwise right in the article? Anyway, I'm sure they'll have another nice sales boost when some of their big hitters come out later this year.
Good for Sony, good for all gamers! Cheers to more consoles sold (all makes).
Very interesting I didn't think they would make their goal of 11 million.
Good job for Sony. Things can only go up from here. Just hope they play their cards wisely.
@Witzbold: I'd buy one if they did. $600 was too much for me back then. It's a shame that once the prices dropped, it became less appealing to me.
@GodzillaVsJapan: Ruining everyone's jokes with my seriocity (® George W Bush), I'm gonna say... I'd give the eleven millionth customer, or whoever won the raffle when the millionth system was gonna be sold, a PSP, a 50+ inch bravia, and a lifetime supply of free first party Sony studio titles as well as insomniac and naughty dog and incognito titles.
Oh, and a lifetime supply of Sony bluray movies... Then he or she could sell the crappy ones and buy Hot Fuzz when it hits bluray. Heh...
I was one of those 10.5 million and it definitely fits in well next to my 360. Hopefully in the next year they pick up their online act so they can give me some replayability in their games. My 360's got me spoiled. Either way though...congratulations Sony.
@Sollus:
Comparison from launch
[vgchartz.com]
@Sony: Upgrade the $400 bundle with good games (Resistance and Motorstorm possibly) and/or the Dual Shock 3 instead of Spidey 3 and I can almost guarantee you double your current U.S. sales base this year; I can guarantee that I personally will buy one if you do those things.
@bobtheduck: I can't wait for Hot Fuzz on Blu-ray.
@Witzbold: Do you reall think so though?I can understand it being a big debate around launch time, but now? All I see if maybe 10k hardcore gamers that refuse to buy unless BC, but they had their chance. I really don't think BC plays any part anymore except for a "point" on system wars to be brough up in debate. We don't argue 360 BC anymore, and we even want next DS Lite to remove GBA slot.
When all the games roll out of 2008 BC won't matter, and PS2 will get a price cut for sure. No, Sony and PS3 has other things to focus on, ingame xmb and home not to mention the games and hopefully stick with maximum 2 real SKU's. Confusion sux.
If anyone is holding out on a ps3 because of BC today, then they should not buy one to begin with and just buy a PS2 or stick with a PS2 instead.
There goal was selling 11M in fiscal year 2008, not total since launch.
Also, Sony now reports sold to retailers, rather than shipped to warehouses.
@Kyle81: Thats because theres more games out now. That and I still dont see why they cant produce both units since you got the cheaper one for the folks who dont care yet keep the one with the BC for folks who do.
I do wonder how much of the public outside of the gaming circles knows about the BC removal in the first place and are just assuming its like the PS2 with BC.
Ill grab one at the end of the year.
Besides MGS4, every game I wanted to grab is multi-platform.
Its quite a shame to leave my 48' 1080p without any blue ray action :/
Obviously it must be Al-qaida and russia that's buying them to power their nuclear missile launchers...
Ummmm, thats kinda funny, Kaz Hirai just recently made doubts about his 11 million products sold and specifically remarked
"We haven't made any conclusion whether we have to give it up. It depends on how aggressively dealers buy our PS3 inventory.''
[www.gamesindustry.biz]
It is true that on Sony's own documents, they stopped using "Shipped Units" to "Recorded Sales". But I do believe Kaz specifically mentions recorded sales to retailers right there in his comment, dated Jan 22, 2008
that'll do sony, that'll do
I'm glad, after all the Sony bashing they're still delivering a product people want. I don't think it's unreasonable to say they will probably finish as the worldwide #2. They outsell the 360 in Europe and I don't even need to mention Japan. I doubt they'll pass the 360 in America but it's still a reasonable performance considering the massive implosion that was predicted before the launch.
@DaiMacculate: If they kept it the way it was, tossed in the DS3 and some form of PS2 BC, I'd buy one in the fall when the games start coming out.
I myself will be getting a PS3 this spring. Will buy the 60GB on eBay so I can play my PS2 games. I already have a Wii and since 99% of the games I want for the X-Box 360 and PS3 are multi-platform I will get the PS3 because of FF13, FFvs13 and MGS4 also, seems to fit me. PS3 I think will overtake the X-Box 360 this year as I see it. Since the only place the 360 sells seems to be in the US (plus I can play a bunch of Japanese Games on the PS3 since I like alot of those games)
@GodzillaVsJapan: Lifetime subscription to PSN.
I wonder how much the new model that we "dont know about" is going to affect the sales.
@Nobuyuki: I think that's possible, but I don't really think the 'console war' this generation will have a 'loser'. If current trends continue I'd guess that all 3 consoles will end up relatively close to each other before the next hardware cycle starts.
