Excuse us while we go uberdorky for a moment. We've all heard about the Xbox 360 chipsets Xenon (90nm CPU, 90nm GPU), Zephyr (HDMI and cooling), Falcon (65nm CPU) and rumored Jasper (not out yet, 65nm CPU, 65nm GPU). Now a new rumor has it that two new chipsets could be coming called "Opus" and "Valhalla." Here's the skinny:
The Opus chipset is actually a bit strange. Featuring a 65nm CPU and a 90nm GPU, the Opus seems like a step back because it's merely intended to fit in the original Xenon Xbox 360 cases. With the Opus, all those RRoD systems can be, in some small way, recycled. This chipset will probably be reserved for refurbished systems only.
That means the Valhalla would be the next chipset of choice since it combines the CPU and GPU onto one 65nm chip. Requiring even less cooling that we'd see in the Jasper chipset, the Valhalla could be the Holy Grail for Microsoft to make some serious cash on the console business. And it could happen either in late 2009 or 2010.
Now to sit back and listen to all the, "I have to wait until freakin' 2010 to buy a 360??" comments.
Next Xbox 360 Designs are "Opus" and "Valhalla" [8bitjoystick]

I have to wait until freakin' 2010 to buy a 360??
WTF do they need to keep revising their consoles? Frickin' absurd.
@Roller: Does anybody know which chipset the Halo 3 unit uses? Is it Zephyr or Falcon?
I'm confused...how is the Opus different from the Falcon?
I have to wait until freakin' 2010 to buy a 360??
oh wait I already have one :) Its sad to say this but I cant wait until my 360 breaks so I can demand a system with HDMI and a new chipset.
My 360 just ringed on me this week. Really was itching to play DMC4...
On the up-side, they've said the Falcon-imbued 360s are mostly 3RL free...
@Roller: Well done.
Well about time we heard something about Microsoft making a sincere effort to squash the RROD.
"Opus"? "Valhalla"? What's next, the Oeuvre or Ragnorok chipset? It reminds me of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" or some other useless such name. Ah, the beauty of PR.
So is heat the only thing that makes the 360 RRoD?
@HykCraft: To save money!
Ok, you're just making up words and stuff to confuse me now, aren't you?
@HykCraft: If a system is cheaper to make, they make more money. If it's more reliable, they spend less on warranty service. If they can sell it cheaper they can hit a larger market segment (poorer/cheap individuals) and make more money. It's all about more money. Get it?
Falcon should have been the launch chipset, Jasper arriving with the Elite and Valhalla coming this fall. That is what MS gets for rushing to market!
I might just buy one if it doesn't sound like a Jet engine...
The 360 is such a kick ass console I'll buy 1 version of every sku with every chip, I don't care, ~ gimmie gimmie gimmie ~ !
im waiting for the "high ground" chipset
HIIIYO
@baked ham: Falcon.
I'm just waiting for Jasper, my guess would be that Valhalla will be for a smaller size 360.
When they release a 360 that can't RRoD I'll (re)buy it. Until then, it's uninspiring.
@HykCraft: They don't HAVE TO...its called technological advances. Things get better, cheaper, faster. Why wouldn't they? Look at a PC you bought a year ago, it's crap compared to one you can get now for same price.
Whatever happened to that order for the 45nm or 32nm chips?
[kotaku.com]
@HykCraft:
Perhaps because it saves energy, requires less cooling and is cheaper to produce.....
Or maybe they have no reason and they just do it for the hell of it.
@silkylove:
From what my friends who fix ringed 360s say, not just about the heat but the way the motherboard is structured to siphon electricity thus the overheating problem. The Falcon is supposed to alleviate this.
Check the Falcon equipped ones and you're going to see that the powerbrick has a lower wattage requirement...
=)
I have to wait until freakin' 2010 to still not buy a 360?
@HykCraft: Every single console out there has had revisions. Over and over and over again. There were about 15 hardware revisions of the PS2.
Umm.. Revising consoles is quite very normal. The PS2 has seen, what, 10 versions?
I like what Sony did with PSTwo, so Valhalla sounds interesting as it could mean a 'mini' 360 SKU.
Hello. My name is Gordon E. Moore. This is my law.
Too confusing.
@HykCraft:
do you jokes?
Consoles get revised normally as part of their life cycle to reduce cost and fix defects. The RROD and continued high estimated failure rates means that yes, they should be revising their console. This is a good and proper thing, but it also means, that, I, like a lot of people will probably not get a 360 until they have eased my fear of console death sufficiently. An extended warranty and the hassle of shipping the console in, is not sufficient for me.
@mind in rewind: Cool. Thanks.
Quite honestly, the rrod is the big reason I haven't picked one up yet. I really don't like the idea of having to sending it in (possibly a few times)or paying $100 for an extended warranty to swap it it instore the next day. The then dlc drm issue on top of it is making me hold off. However I'll probably cave in when GTAIV comes out. :)
@baked ham: They're a mix of both, so you'll have to check by team and lot number (or, for more accuracy, do the flashlight test).
@CollapseControl: People try to call me a fanboy geez
@HykCraft: "WTF do they need to keep revising their consoles? Frickin' absurd."
Every manufacturer revises their consoles. The internet just makes it so we're more aware of it.
@Strangelove: "Opus"? "Valhalla"? What's next, the Oeuvre or Ragnorok chipset? It reminds me of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" or some other useless such name. Ah, the beauty of PR.
What the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with PR, these are internal codenames for the chipsets.
I love it how everyone complains about PC's being so messed up as a gaming platform because of the ever constant changing hardware, yet it's pretty damn obvious consoles are going the same way.
Seems to me like it's pointless to buy a console now right when it's released, as they'll just come out with a better, more efficient version of it at some point.
By 2010 it's too late, remember the ps3 will beat out the 360 by then. MS is hopeless.
@HykCraft: From what I know, its normal for any console to go through multiple revisions throughout a generation. I'm guessing the only reason we hear about the 360's revisions are because people in the gaming media think it might interest us to know about them, seeing as how the 3RL is a widely talked about problem.
I don't have to wait till 2010 to never buy a 360?
(Much sooner, on my PC, will come Mass Effect Gaming for Windows...and wonderful lesbian alien sex!)
I need a chipset that is called "won't crash"
OR you could just buy a PS3. Sure it costs more, library's smaller being newer. But it has blu-ray, free online network and more importantly: It.. works.
@GPman:
The DRM issue can be easily solved, actually. All you have to do if you have a DRM issue with a replacement console is just delete your gamertag, recover it, delete your DLC, then redownload it.
@baked ham: some are zephyr, some are falcon. depends on the manufacturing team and the manufacture date.
I think mine is about to ring again. This'll be my third time sending it out. It's making weird grinding sounds when it reads discs and keeps refusing to read Graw 2. Can't tell you how many times I had to reset the console in order to play last night :( I'm about to just give up and buy an Elite. Going through Microsoft doesn't seem worth it.
As to reiterate, LO is starting to make my Xbox 360 have disc read errors...
Looks like very soon, I will have to get a 3rd replacement.
It's great if that takes care of the three red lights problems that have caused me to go through three 360's. Still it doesn't do anything for those of us in Red Ring Limbo where they just keep sending us refurbed 360's that aren't really "fixed" and break every 3-6 months.
Trying not to be overly whiiiiiny, I was going for more of a pissed and for good reason post.
@KaneRobot: Yes and these code names are generally made up without a lot of thought. The whole nordic theme started because someone had a cat named loki... These names are generally meaningless as they don't confuse the competition and mainly exist because people like making up cute names and pretending they are working on top-secret stuff.
Zephyr! Falcon! Jasper! Opus! Valhall!
Go 360-tron Froce!
@CollapseControl:
how does Bill Gate's penis taste?
@mva5580: The difference with console upgrades (within the same generation atleast), is that all of the games play on all of the different versions of the console
It does rather sound like Microsoft is trying to put together a "Power Ranger" like team.
Next time, MS, just make a board that works right the first time. Then you won't have to worry about it.
My fifth 360 is finally suppose to be here Monday, after being held up in Texas since mid November. I am completely disillusioned with the X-Box brand at this point.
This is could be helpful for users who have sent their consoles in for repairs.
But I'm all for lowering costs of the console. Wonder what the price will be in 2009...
@PwnySlaystation:
HE HAS A PENIS?
