Yeah, the filthy rich and super-important make donations to Presidential candidates, but everyday folk do as well. And games developers are everyday folk. 1UP have, using the Fundrace 2008 online search tool, found which people from which studios have donated to the various candidates. Those hoping/expecting for some love for Hillary Clinton will be sorely disappointed.
Instead, it's Ron Paul who's the overwhelming favourite amongst developers (and publishers), with 13 of the 35 people 1UP tracked down opting for the Republican candidate. As far as party preference goes, 21 opted for Republican candidates, with only 14 sliding the Democrats some cash, while in terms of hard cash donated this meant $27,459 was raised for the Republican candidates, with only $18,832 coughed up for the Democrats. And the biggest single donation? $4600, a mark shared by three people: Activision co-Chairman Brian Kelly and EA execs Cindy Nicola & Steven Schnur.
Small change in the grand scheme of things, sure, but interesting nonetheless. There's more fun political and numbery stuff over at 1UP's piece, head there to check out the full breakdown.
Playing Politics: Game Makers' Political Contributions [1UP]

Insert Ron Paul joke here.
Should... Should that be a comma after the eighteen? Because really, if not, they're dealing in monetary denominations unbeknownst to me.
@Maldron: Apparently the gaming industry really hates the Democratic party, and only coughed up eighteen bucks and some change. Jaffe was kind enough to donate the .002 cents, and told them to kindly 'fuck themselves' in typical Jaffe fashion.
Interesting, every single Valve employee donated to democrats.
Every single Activision employee donated Republican.
Now I'm not trying to get too political here, but let's point out something interesting:
Which company came out with the best game of 2007?
Which company release a lot of sequels, and derivative games, while innovating nothing?
Hmm, I would of expected more democrat donations, what with game culture being full of hip and edgy athiests and anarchists and all.
@Ampillion lives a life much like No More Heroes.: [verizonmath.blogspot.com]
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: Activision gave us COD 4.
Valve gave us Portal.
Tough Call.
Well im sorry for all those who donated to anyone except Obama and McCain.
I saw Obama speak in Virginia Beach last sunday. It was great.
I also find it add how many donated to republicans. I personally thought game developers would be more liberal for some reason
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: And you sir win on the smart political level. Bravo. It's not against the commenting rules for me to say I'm nominating you is it?
I love the way Ron Paul thinks. He seems (From what I know) to be sane compared to a lot of the candidates. My second candidate is Obama, who I like, and is a great thinker. I'm still sick of people supporting Obama, without knowing what he's going to do.
I vote democrat normally, but I'm not happy at all with my options this go-around.
Oh God, not Ron Paul. If he was president none of us would be citizens.
I really like Paul but I think some of what he says is just impossible and not practical. I'd vote for him if he had a snowballs chance in hell but I'm going to go for Obama I think. Though, I don't like a couple of his key issues.
$15,000 to the Republicans? No wonder I hate Activision so much.
And in typical fashion, EA plays both sides. Ah, politics, how I loathe thee.
I'm a Clinton supporter, but I fail to see how I would be disappointed by others exercising their rights as citizens.
My life would be a sad one if I based it upon a need for everyone to agree with me.
What a terrible picture of Gabe.
Ron Paul, psshhh, we want Ron Popeil
@HigglyPiggly: That doesn't make any sense. You know nothing about Ron paul, do you?
Anyway, I beg of you, Kotaku editors, why can't we just leave the politics out of this? Even if it's gaming related, it's really not. This involves people in the gaming industry, but it's really a political thing. Fuck politics. Gah.
object width="425" height="355">
Welp, guess that didn't work
Gabe needs another burger... or 3 in that pic there.
@rannic: Ah, good old cell phone companies...
Maybe Activision charges $6.252 for their Guitar Hero 3 download packs, and they chipped in their fractions.
Activision = (R)
Steam = (D)
Nice to see EA playing both sides tho.
@PCapologist: Okay. Genuinely confused. I figured maybe the coding cut off part of your message, but no, I checked the source, and that's the full thing. What on earth are you smoking.
Also, much love to Steam for supporting Obama baby!
mmmm want me some Ron Paul
@dead_red_eyes: Nice? Isn't it more disconcerting that Activision didn't? What are they, a hivemind?
@Ampillion: That does SOUND like something Jaffe would do.
@dead_red_eyes:
It's the first non-Portal thing Valve's done in a long time that's impressed me. Agreed!
Giving money to Ron Paul is like throwing it out the window. Seriously, people think he actually has a chance? Sigh...
He wants to abolish taxes! Thats RIDICULOUS. It takes money to run a nation.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: Hmm, Valve is progressive and Activision contributes nothing new. Not that I'm implying anything about either party- er, game company.
@blackadvent: Here's a good one: Ron Paul (I kid, I kid)
@Doomstink:
Uh, no, he doesn't want to abolish taxes. Just the federal income tax, which we really don't need if we knock down the size of government to ten years ago.
And, have you ever heard of a brokered convention? There will be one, because no Republican candidate will be able to lock in a nomination until that Republican National Convention. He has a chance.
@Doomstink:
Well, I have to think that a lot of people who've donated know they're throwing their money away, but do it anyway as a symbolic gesture representing their distaste with the other candidates.
...and then there are the crazies who think he's actually going to win.
Two words
BROKERED CONVENTION!
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!
Will Wright donated $3500 to Giuliani.
Oops.
@TheCleaningGuy: is Maximum Risky!: I would hardly say Activision "gave us" COD4. COD4 was developed by Infinity Ward.
@Kirbytheslayer: Hot Tears of Shame for Life!: He tried to embed a YouTube video by copying the actual HTML embed code, instead of just pasting the link.
You can tell because YouTube's dimensions are 425x355. *forehead slap*
Well, for all those who say Ron Paul doesn't have a snow ball's chance in hell, look up Abraham Lincoln and how he won his party's nomination. If it's the media you get your information from, they are clueless about how the nomination process works. They are quite literally monkeys.
And, for Ron Paul supporters, it's about his message not himself.
I've purposely not stated my opinion, as to avoid being sucked into politics, but I'd like to point something out:
The majority of the Studios were Democrats, Activision just donated so much that they seemed to be underrepresented.
PS: I've never played CoD4.
@jkingsowner: You get rid of the income tax and all of a sudden we end up having a regressive tax system that puts more of the tax burden on the poor...good job
@Doomstink: You're right about throwing money down the toilet. He ain't gonna win. However, I don't think it's so ridiculous to get rid of taxes. What right does the government have to take my taxes? Sales tax oughtta be enough. For christ's sake, as it is, the government spends trillions of dollers it doesn't have. Wouldn't it be just as sensible, if not more so, to cut the majority of that superfluous spending out, and then eliminate the mandated income tax? If they can spend all that money now (without actually having it), why couldn't they just ... take in less, and spend less. Eh?
lol wonder how long after that picture was taken Gabe ate Dodd. Alteast now we know why he dropped out. I figured id go ahead and get the gabe is fat joke out there since i didnt see anyone else do it :(
@Kj719:
Uh, no? You don't replace it with anything... No regressive tax is going to appear out of nowhere.
Are you one of those people who are super excited for the retarded economic stimulus package?
Also, an income tax period is unfair no matter.
You guys should look up the one percent sales tax.
It is TRULY an amazing replacement for the income tax.
@baked ham: Apologies to all for the politics:
Income tax makes much more sense than sales tax. If the gov't has to raise a certain amount, without an income tax the sales tax would have to be up around 30-40% at minimum. If you spend all your income on money, that means you effectively paid 30-40% of you income on taxes.
The problem is that this affects everybody. That means that the poor and the rich are all paying the same percentage in taxes. In actuality, the rich save so that means their tax rate is smaller and the poor tend to spend more than their means which means their tax rate is higher.
i bet obama is a gamer! he fits right into the generation that grew up with the first games
Ron Paul, really?
Christopher Dodd?! Gabe Newell obviously knows how to waste his money.
And a one percent sales tax is ridiculous, we'd have no money for anything.
