At EA's New York event today, the Gawker video crew got a quick look at Battlefield: Bad Company for Xbox 360/PS3. What's EA's big pitch? Destructible environments. We've heard it before—here's hoping that Bad Company is more than just shooting barrels and blowing holes in walls textured with only certain types of brick.

Not holding my breath on this one.
EA even said its not a follow up to Battlefield.
Thus.. is why I wont be buying it.
That guy is very scary.
Nooo! Why? Wilson, you're killing me! *goes sit in a corner and cries*
Destructable environments are so cool. Too bad nobody has made good ones yet. Here's hoping, LucusArts.
Were the Gawker video crew invited to drink alcohol at the event? And if so, did they get drunk and destroy everything in the immediate environment just to prove EA's pitch? I would if it meant getting tanked on their behalf.
I so need to go to one of these.
This game is totally Anti-Hype >.>
This guy proves that skin textures in doom 3 were realistic :P
Oh... if a BF game is on a console, it's not worth the time.
@Lain: Isnt this a freeware game? so technically you wouldnt be buying it.
Oh wow. I think it's "giant enemy crab... attack it's weak point for massive damage" all over again.
@gamadaya:
It's very hard, even if it's technically feesable on console or PC hardware, you have everything in that game potentially falling everywhere. That includes places that you might need to get to so you can advance to the next level.
How many times have you been stuck in-game when you jumped into the wrong spot and couldn't get out? Imagine if the entire game could be destroyed! I am sure there are some good ideas that work, but it is difficult at best.
Boycott EA, buy indie games today!
this guys wierd and sux
Holy cripes that is a really, really scarey fish eye lens.
Whoever the guy is whose talking, really, really needs to pick a few hairs out of his nose.
@Kai_:
After Crysis I am an EA fan. Do what you will while I will laugh all the way to gaming bliss ;)
This video didn't really show anything.
...
It's ridiculous that Red Faction (almost 10 years old) still has the best destructible environments of any game.
There's really nothing like barrel rolling a blackhawk in BF2 and watching all your passengers freak out and jump.
@homernoy:
Yeah, but with Fracture, you can also manipulate the environment. If a structure falls into your way, which I'm sure it will frequently, you just toss a grenade and have a piller of earth push it away. And remember all those tank flash games with destructable environments? A lot of those were cool, and there were ways to get out if you got stuck. I know it's hard to do, and LucusArts almost didn't go through with the project because the programmers were so scared, but I'm glad they're doing it. They're taking a big risk, but I'm sure it's going to pay off.
I think he wants to rape me right through my screen.
Extreme close-up whoaaaaa
I'm only interested in the MP component. If it's anything like BF2, I want.
Let's hope they keep all the best parts of the last games in multiplayer. Oh man, will you still be able to use a parachute 4 feet off the ground? Will you pilot aircraft like a drunk Steven Hawking? Will your squad mates put explosives on YOUR vehicles?
It is still pretty impressive on how much can be destroyed. If you watch any of the videos on the 360 (dev diary things) ... you can destroy a whole lot. At least a ton more than most games to feel more destructive.
I wanted to see more gameplay, less big face. D::::
The titles for these military FPS/TPS games just keep getting dumber and more generic...
And I can't imagine the game itself is any breath of fresh air either.
What's up with that guy and blowing up gas tank?
Like there isn't like a bazillion of game out there that does that...
I can't remember where, but I saw a really cool video showing off the destruction. They ended the video with a huge explosion that left the buildings almost completely destroyed.
This EA guy is a complete tool. He needs to LEARN how to pitch games. I would never hire this guy at my development company.
@argh: Lol, sad but true. I remember tunneling my way into the enemy's base in multiplayer. Can someone please get someone from that dev team to work on future projects?
@SirCobbins: oh. it's on my hdd. :P
his nose is long. reminds me of toucan sam.
So it's basically a game version of the movie "Kelly's Heroes."
Where da gold at?
+ Watch video
Seriously... How many gas tanks are there sitting around the world at all times, and why do people hang around beside them in battle zones...
@skelator316: You're thinking of Battlefield Heroes. This is a different game.
@homernoy:
Is it even possible to be an EA fan? That's like saying you like the president, Sure he got elected twice, but your never supposed to ADMIT you voted for them.
Where's the gold, I want the gold.
@gamadaya: Let's not forget Red Faction III ;-)
God, you people are so jaded...
+ Watch video
@Nightshift Nurse: Nursier and Shiftier: Shooting Conlict Crisis War Nazi-shoot liberty resistance of brothers in medal of duty of War II Turbo.
Unfortunately, this is how I read all shooter titles.
No PC love why? <-(...
@TOCATL:
Because Jesus approves of PC gaming, and EA hates jesus... :P i'm sorry, i just can't come up with any other reason.
This guys sux at pitching. The videos I've seen online made me more interested in this title than anything Captain Nosehair said....
That said, the videos make this look like not a suck. I remember chasing infantry around a grass hut in a tank forever in previous versions. In this you just pancake him and his little hut.
On the other hand, helos will probably be WAYYYYY overpowered AGAIN.
Oh wait. Console?
Nevermind.
@ShirtGuyDom: Yeah but we all know how pre-alpha vids go and all. I just hope everything works like how it was shown in that video.
The big question on my mind:
IF you shoot four supporting walls of a structure (Say a house), will the house collapse under its own weight with the HavoK physics engine, or will it still stand.... or is that the next step after this?
"Attack gas tanks for massive damage" , What next?
@AndrewDB: That pre-alpha video above stated that they wanted to leave the houses at least partially standing so you could better survey the wreckage (more of an "emotional impact", if you will).
I'd like to see something other than the traditional "Fully destructable environments!".For example:
The enemy hops in a Jeep and prepares to speed away.You fire off a few shots and manage to damage the gas tank, causing a fuel leak.He speeds off, and you continue to fire.You manage to hit a rear back tire, which eventually tears off.The Jeep is now riding on one rim, which is causing sparks to fly.A stray spark hits the trickle of gasoline, and the Jeep goes up.
I know its not perfect, and has a lot to do with "in game" realism as well as destructability(would the Jeep eventually run out of gas anyway, etc.)but I'm more interested in a game that features unique destructability rather than total destructability.
I wish they had swapped the amount of time devoted to him speaking with the amount of time devoted to showing gameplay. That was a waste of howevermanyminutes it lasted...nothing new was stated
Apparently, "You'll be doing everything, from blowing up rocket launchers..." I'm sure he meant "set off" rocket launchers, but I couldn't help but laugh.
And, was this video filmed in bar? Seems like the speaker is a bit...talkative.
I think this calls for a "Justify Your Game." It's been a while.
I realise that plot hasn't always been the Battlefield series strongest point. That said, even for it this it's a bit much. Am I irked at using a clichéd plot to gloss over a sandbox-style game? Why would I. From my own experience, Battlefield has always been about arcade style action.
Still, it seems they've taken a different route with this. Rather than just a tacked on singleplayer campaign (replete with cheesy plot), it seems they were sort of trying. Kind of. Would have been nice to have a decent story. A man can dream though.
@ForwardInReverse: Aside from leaking fuel, you just described Crysis.
I seem to recall that in Armed Assault you can hit things like fuel lines when you shoot at helicopters and such, but I could be wrong. I know for a fact that a well-placed sniper shot can take out the tail rotor and send a chopper spinning out of control, as I have seen videos of that on youtube. Of course, ArmA/OFP are a pretty hardcore simulations and not for everyone. If they played a little smoother, I would go for it, though.
