While we all know when we can expect Spore (psst, that's Sept 7th in the US and Sept 5th in Europe), apparently fans will get a small taste of the game before the full retail version ships. A separate, creature-editor edition Spore SKU will be out before the full version. Pricing and exact dates are not known, but the creatures made in this program will be usable in the full retail version to come. We'd hope that it would be free, but the last time we assumed anything someone made a really bad "ass" pun.
Can't wait for September 7? Creature-only Spore to launch sooner [Joystiq]

You have to pay? Wow.
I still will though sadly.
assuming makes an ass outta you and me!
sorry. not really.
Ah, practice creating your monster for the full thing.
Nice.
Seems like the kind of thing that shoule be free over XBLive, a sort of limited demo.
Sweet! This is really awesome because I usually take forever to create a character. Now when I get the game I can start playing with my super cool creature ready to go! Or edit my creature again...
Looks like I can begin make a creature that resembles a certain dark elder god earlier than I expected.
free! fanstastic, thanks for the news kotaku! =)
@sadkermit: No, it makes an ass out of me, and you get more money! ;P
Can somehome made for me a civilization made of Cthulu monsters?
I got all excited and then I read you had to pay. I think I speak for most people when I say "screw that".
Maybe if we all keep acting like it'll be free then they'll make it free!
Free or no go.
@Candlejack:
+ Watch video
My suggestion?
Free with a pre-order over Steam. Or $10 over some sort of digital delivery with $10 credit for the full version.
The best thing they could do is make this like a pre-order box...5 bucks for this, and it goes toward the purchase of the game. (sorry for double post, I'm not even sure if the above one posted properly, a link to youtube in response to Candlejack)
I signed a petition to get this thing.
@Candlejack: right on! lol
I'm only interested if this is free. Otherwise I'll wait for the full game. Buying part of the game before it is released sounds too much like paying for a demo to me.
@Karlott: Doesn't work :(
@sadkermit: :D
No thanks, after all this time, I want to go into Spore fresh. I'm still kicking myself for watching a demo video of it from 2 years ago.
@sadkermit: No no no.
Assuming makes an ass out of you and Ming. And as we all know, you don't want to make an ass Ming.
Assumed makes an ass out of you and med? Someone on the pill, here?
It is FREE!
Wired online just had piece about it called "Opinion: Why Spore Will Be Huge"
Definitely free. Definitely Definitely. Kmart sucks.
Mhh..the characters editor for The Sims 2 and The Movies (yes, unrealted, i know) was free, so...
Nowhere in there does it say pay.
It just says pricing and release are unknown. Doesn't that mean the price could be free? Or it could something you get with a standard preorder? Why is everyone suddenly assuming we'll have to pay? They did this already with the Sims 2.
Awesome a chance to make abominations of nature before the world is actually created.
I look forward to a planet full of Tyranids.
i'm interested, but depends totally on price point and how far in advance. not surprising they want money for it, i'm sure this game cost them TONS to make as long as it took.
If it's not free, it should give a discount off the retail version.
I fully expect this to be free on the PC. On the consoles though, I'm far less hopeful...
Ah well, the good news is, everyone gets a headstart on perfecting their penis creatures...
EA wanna make some money back? If it ain't free then no thanks.
Well, its worth it I think.
Because when Spore drops, the streaming content will start.
You're paying for first place in line. Your brilliant monster will be some of the first content available **immediately** when people boot up the game.
So long as its not a full $49, I think its reasonable.
@brandonf: That'd totally be the way to go...
...if the game was on Xbox 360.
Oh I doubt they charge for it. I mean c'mon! Unless it has some sort of exclusive content who'd pay for it?
That would be radass.
shall i scream EA? or just sit and wait?
Could be a pre-order promo. I think EA has some sort of digital download service that could use a boost. >.>
How will this work? You have to go through the tide pool stage first and then work your way through the creature phase to get more DNA...fail.
Most likely free as a gimmick to get more people to buy the actual game, "Make a bad-ass creature, watch it destroy civilizations, only with the purchase of Spore!"
There are going to be so many pokemons made with this thing.
The only problem with totally free is that the instant it went live, there would be 10,000,000 giant penis monsters floating around the pollination servers. Or giant vagina monsters, or some other body part. The bitch in user generated content is that users will make whatever they want, and lots of them have the maturity of a 12 year-old.
So maybe free with reg, or free w/ preorder... well, we'll see.
@tme2nsb: you can choose to start at any phase you please, if you choose to start from say, the creature level, your given the option of which content created by some other user to use as a base, sinse you didn't go through the first phase.
for this i could image they jsut put another option "import creature from Spore Creature Editor" or soemthing
The Sims 2 character creator was a free download before the release, so this is just ridiculous.
According to the Wired article, it's gonna be free.
@Candlejack:
OK, well, for those not in the know, then go to Youtube and search for Barats and Bareta, Auto Insurance, that's what the link was. :D Youtube wants to load videos in here instead of just let me link to the damn page.
I think the sims 2 shipped a copy of the create-a-sim program before the official game went retail also. Like 2-3 weeks before if I remember correctly. Not to suprised Spore would do the same thing seeing as how heavily customisible th critters are. Im so looking forward to this!
Paying for it would be punishing the early adopters, I could see this being included with pre-orders like others have mentioned, or in the worst case it would be a minor expense when it's all said and done. What I would really like to see is for them to include all the editors and not just the creature one. While the creature editor looks awesome I'm also extremely excited about the vehicles.
The Sims 2 free pre-release thing, you could give your guy one of two pairs of bermuda shorts, and one choice was mint green plaid. The video advertising the game also showed women pulling their bras off and toddlers breathing fire, which never happens.
@Karlott: Ah, yea. Well those not knowing don't deserve to understand I say!!!
