Less than a year after it's March 23rd launch in the United Kingdom and the PlayStation 3 has hit the million units sold mark, according to UK market research company Chart-Track. Despite a somewhat rocky start, Sony's initially luxury-priced console has managed to reach said milestone even faster than it's predecessor, the PlayStation 2. Not only has it outperformed it's older brother, but the PS3 has also been completely kicking the ass of Microsoft's Xbox 360 as well.
ChartTrack has also revealed that the Sony console has been outselling 360 for the last month. "It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks, but they were neck and neck over the Christmas period, weeks 49-52," said ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch.I'd imagine the recent triumphs of blu-ray over HD DVD have had quite a hand in spurring PS3 sales, and things will only get better for Sony's console.

Well looks like MS was ready for a sprint, not a marathon.
Sony is going to capture the #1 spot for Next Gen consoles and the Xbox is going to fall back down. I've never seen a company snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like Microsoft has.
I am about to get a PS3 now if only there was anything I wanted to play on it. can someone give me a top 10 list of PS3 games? I need like atleast 5 before I'd be willing to make the jump.
Thats funny, because i live in Britain and i only know one person with a PS3, whereas i know around 10-15 people with X360s. Funny that!
i know 3 other people that own a PS3 including myself yet i know 15 odd people that own a 360 hmmmmm.....

I think M$ is rather happy they decided to spend 50 million for two exclusive dlc's of gta 4, properly marketed that should sell a lot of extra 360's.

Well ofcourse it sold more, it's called stock. They delayed the launch of the PS3 in the UK and launched with more stock so they could say stuff like this.
And I'm not getting at PS3 but them saying 'It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks' makes it sound like the 360 was beating it before that so not sure how these sales work as a total.
Not surprised, didn't we know it was selling well over there? Eh, furthermore people really did try to write the PS3 off early, so I guess some might be surprised....but seriously look at the PS3 - look at everything it does and will do.....The PS3 is going to regain the number 1 spot - any intelligent individual should know that.

It didn't say there are more PS3 owners than 360 owners, but that the PS3 was now outselling the 360. It'll take a while for Sony to catch up, but it is catching up.
And I too know of several 360 owners, but I'm the only person I know who has a PS3 (but I know one person who plans to buy soon).
They should release a Union Jack PS3 with backwards compatibility, that would be great.
The Xbox 360 still has plenty of life left in it. It's still leading the PS3 by some distance in totals, and I doubt the PS3 will overtake by the end of the year. Not many people buy games like MGS4 here.
To be honest, I would be surprised if people here are really that keen on getting Blu-Ray. I have 1 friend who is, but he's going to Hong Kong to try and buy a backwards-compatible version.
And to be honest - I can't readily tell the difference between HD and regular TV. It's certainly not worth the money at the moment.
It would be nice to see some figures before you come up with comments like "completely kicking the ass of the Xbox 360" as well.

It's so deliciously tragic how the tables have turned... I actually owned a 360 exactly a year ago. Was a good piece of kit, but I was itching for a PS3, so I ditched the contraption before it went to the land of the dead and got myself a PS3.
My friends still hate me for it.... :(

I would disagree with you there. Folklore is probably my favorite game on the system...its highly under-rated. Resistance was the best FPS until COD4 came around and Heavenly Sword is certainly worth playing (good, but not great). All 3 are worth playing and Folklore and Resistance are certainly worth buying.
I used to play Warhawk all the time, but it hasn't seen much play since I purchased COD4. When I did play it was highly enjoyable though.

Jokes aside, anecdotal evidence is just that, anecdotal, if I was to judge from the universe of my friends the PS3 will be selling like the Wii with the 360 in third place. That doesn't mean I can carry my small sample and turn it into an universal trend.

I finally bought a PS3 less than three weeks ago and it died last night. It doesn't output any audio or video. I am not impressed so far.
hmmm Most of those games (execpt for the PS3 exculsives) I already have on the 360 I should have said I had those. I think I still need to wait for a few more games to come out before I make the jump. Thanks for the info though guys.

@Bones_Jackson: Well I didn't play too much Folklore but I found the combat very repetitive and slow. I did appreciate the visual style though. Resistence is a solid shooter but very boring, very basic guns for the most part and it just doesn't have a large variety of weapons. I did play through heavenly sword all the way through and thought it was crap crap crap crap crap. Ninja gaiden sigma made up for it though. I've heard good things of Warhawk so think it seems cool but not played it myself.

I'm gonna be buying all the singleplayer multiplatform games on PS3 from now on as well as GTAIV due to my 360 being less than reliable and it keeps giving me disc read errors on DMC4 and Assassins Creed when the discs are flawless.
PS3 reliability wins out.

Another factor may be that 2million Xbox360s have been sold in the UK while only 1 million PS3s have been sold, thus far.
Last stronghold for the 360 in Europe. Now the 360 is an american made system for americans only. Exadurating I know but it ain't looking good, seriously MS, time to give us Europeans some god damn focus and content like all the stuff everyone else gets, all you do is give love to US, and that makes sense but then you give a ton to Japan a country that don't buy a lot from you anyway..
Come on 360 don't lose america too, oh yeah, I forgot about the Wii... Maybe next console you make will... ehm make it?

It's barely been over a whole year since the PS3 launched (less even in the UK), and you all sit in your little corners hating on the thing. Now yes, the 360's sales are good in the UK, and pretty damn good in the US, but who's to say what's what in this console "war"? This news isn't meant necessarily to fan the flames of the stark raving mad fanboys on Kotaku or anywhere else for that matter, and any intelligent individual would not see it as such. Yeah, of course the news came with the hamper of "outsold the 360..blah blah blah" but I had it been spun a different way, this whole discussion would have completely different meaning. The news was more or less to point out how widely and fast gaming is spreading as a culture. This says more about the current state of people playing games than it does anything else. Anyone can be a jackass and put "But XBOX 360 is teh bestz@!" on a forum.
How about instead, we all celebrate the fact that there are millions more gamers now than there were a mere 5 years ago. How about we celebrate the idea that someday gaming will be accepted as a mainstream form of entertainment AND art due to it's ever-growing cache of developers and artists who put their days and nights into making these interactive experiences more fun and stimulating, and it's dedicated fanbase, which is constantly expanding and supporting the medium.
How about, for once, we all just sit down and shut the fuck up and enjoy a game without having to rave about how much better it is on Console A, versus Console B. Are we not mature enough yet to acknowledge that shunning a consoles success does nothing but hurt the industry? Or are we all still just caught up in the debate of who's got the shinier dick?
I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing about something good in the industry only to have it completely torn down by those who claim they "love" it. And I know that this won't mean shit to (possibly) any of you, and this one small rant isn't gonna stop any of you from going from post to post on this site and others and voicing your naive opinions, but I hope that at least gives you some insight as to what the hell is actually going on. PS3 doing good IS good (oh shit, imagine that!) and the 360 doing good is good, and the Wii? Well, the Wii is going to continue to do better than both of the two combined because it's appealing to a fanbase that doesn't bicker about who's the best. The people who don't care are not blind, but are rather the most genuine gamers around now, due to their precise ability to see past the corporate names and bothersome and straight to the things that matter, the games. The fun. The experience.
I personally take this news as light to heart, as a longstanding gamer for over 15 years, I am just glad to see the industry doing well, in any aspect. I can only see this, as I would if it were any console, as a good sign of the future ahead of us all, who will all have some place like Kotaku to rant about video games for a long time to come.
All I can wish for now, is more constructive conversations and communications between the people who play the damned things.
