From the Duh Files comes news that EA plans to ship "extensions" to its financially successfully Skate and Burnout series, by way of EA Games prez Frank Gibeau. He also says that a proper Mass Effect sequel is already in the works. What those extensions may be wasn't defined, GameSpot reports, but could easily mean proper sequels or handheld spin-offs. And while downloadable content most likely isn't out of the question, Skate producers have gone on record in the past saying the title wasn't built with DLC in mind.
Another Burnout wouldn't come as a shock to just about anyone, but it would appear that EA is not going to give up trying to unseat the current Madden of skateboarding, Tony Hawk. He told investors "these are the fights that EA knows how to win," which I'm sure has Activision execs losing control of their bowels in fear. You're welcome for the imagery.
New Burnout, Skate on the way [GameSpot]

Yay, rehash!
Woohoo! More Skate. (I'm being serious here, not sarcastic)
EA making sequels?! What??
(I am looking forward to some more Skate though!)
I hope EA is smart with skate. It was an awesome game with tons of polish and that's why it kicked Tony Hawk's ass. Don't rush out a new sequel every year like Activision did with Tony Hawk or it will become just as stale and boring.
It's a sequel christmas after all.
I hope in the next skate they will make the rag dolling a little better. ;D It always looked odd how my arms were always out on the sides most of the time.
I do hope they include a run function, since it was a bitch setting up shots at times.
Wait. The title originally included "Mass Effect". What is going on I ask, WHAT!!! ;P
::sarcastic comment about not seeing this coming::!!
And yet I'm still excited
let's hope that they add handplants and darkslides in the next skate. i'm playing it right now.
More skate(.) can be a good thing as long as they dont THPS it up and start getting overly wacky with it. Realism (semi real, at least) won it for them this year. The controls were fun (hard at first, but satisfying when learned and used properly.
Maybe it's wishful thinking (just hope it's not NHL 97 all over again.....*shudder)
"these are the fights that EA knows how to win,"
Which is code for "We are currently in negotiation with Tony Hawk to wrap up the exclusive rights to his name and likeness, because competition sucks"
I wish they would be more upfront about the future of Mass Effect and if it is going to stay Microsoft exclusive.
wow EA is making more sodomy simulators? Dr Phil's show was just on and he was slamming Mass Effect also for its recreation of 2 girls 1 cup with using volus and the keepers.
Here's how to decode the secret message:
Skate = of
Burnout = the
Mass Effect = same
Be sure to drink your EAvaltine!
The notion of a "Mass EAffect" really scares me. Will you have to pay M$ points just to rank up or fly to certain planets and will it be basically be ME1 with what could have been a downloadable expansion pack? I hope similar to that one part of the game someone will use their charm skills to talk an EA suit to shoot himself in the head to save the game for everybody else...
If the Activision execs lose their bowel control so easily, maybe they need to dress like the person in the photo from the Kate Muir article.
Mass Effect DS, PSP and Wii! Woot!
Good, maybe this will pressure THPS to get their act together. Used to be such a good series but then totally lost innovation. I have faith they can turn it around, and maybe a game like Skate will do just that.
BOOOOO
New IPs FTW!
More Mass Effect from EA. Wow, when you say it out loud it's....Wow..just wow.
I hope EA takes a "Hands Off" approach, and lets Bioware do their thing how they see fit.
I could maybe see a 'casual games' version of Burnout, where you drive 40 in a 25 and get points for using an aggressive turn signal.
@Kai_: You sir, do not know EA. Look upon them milking mass effect shamelessly, and despair! Muahhhaaaaaaahaa*snort*hahaahaaaaaa!!!!
@boxmyth: The casual games version of Burnout is probably Pole Position. But you know, with close to modern graphics.
skate is a great game, and I can't wait for a sequel. as long as they don't fuck with the formula too much it'll remain great.
They didn't say anything about a new NFS, did they give that up
Before I even read the first line of the article I said to myself, "DUH!" Mass Effect 2 can't come soon enough.
@mva5580: Why bother buying Tony Hawk when he's not "hot" anymore? People complain about Madden being rehashed, but does the world really need an updated Tony Hawk every year? Can the guy even ride a skateboard anymore without being loaded up with painkillers?
@TrettOff: Did the guy ever ride a skateboard without being loaded up with painkillers in the first place?
I kid, I kid.
I don't know how anyone could be in any way surprised by anything mentioned here. Regardless of it being EA, any company nowadays just does not develop a new IP without the idea that it may be revisited some point down the road if it's successful. I mean, when you invest 10-20 million or more into something, you try to get all the mileage you can from it. At least on the business side of things. On the gaming side.. I dunno. I'm sure Skate and Mass Effect could warrant another sequel... Burnout? Didn't we juuuust get one of those?
yay more skate.
I hope with Mass Effect being published with EA we will get the promised features that were missing from the first. Graphic sex, the ability to control what happens during intercourse (rhythm game?), more control over the appearance of our sex partner, more sex partners.
More skate. is fine by me.
More tricks, Female create-a-skater, and more clothing options for skate. 2 please. That's all I ask for... now, anyway...
I hope they actually finish Mass Effect 2, instead of deciding to ship halfway through debugging it. But Skate 2... that'll be cool. I was so glad when Skate beat Tony Hawk in sales. I always wanted a realistic skating game.
Where's SSX? Yes, they broke it with On Tour, but I want another!
@notakujustraku:
If only it were published by Fox.
@AutomaticZen:
Holy crap, that's right! I forgot all about SSX. That would be cool if they released another.
i've stopped buying tony hawk since tony 4, but just to support activision, i might as well get the 2008 version.
This article makes it sound like Skate hasn't already beaten THPS...
SSX would be a good game for them to put on the 360 and PS3, with skate-like controls. Bring back SSX!
lol i like the box art, skates.
i would think it would be funny if there was a question mark at the end.
skates?
ok maybe that doesnt look that funny.
I, for one, would be pretty disappointed if we weren't going to see a Mass Effect sequels.
I mean, seriously, the Reapers are still out there!
I still want melee weapons in mass effect. Since Ive been able to get behind folks on so many occasions thanks to my AI buddies being decoys.
The lame stock whip just doesnt cut it in terms of satisfaction.
Yay, I can finally nail the nollie 360 flip!
And yay for all of these sequels, here's hoping they're worthy!
Finally skate 2 is confirmed, thank you jebus.
You mean one more franchise for us PS3 owners. Burnout is already for PS3, same with Skate. But everyone knows EA.... and Mass Efect is going to go multiplat.
@PSN: Lp47: Have fun with your 30 FPS games coming out 3 months late. LOL PS3
@astrixzero:
You mean because one game (Madden) is 30 fps while being 60 on 360? Good one.
theres always room for skate. they just better not make too many of them.
Skate 2 = Actually doing lip tricks and getting off the board?!?!?... I'll buy.
