Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a super smash hit in Japan. When it went on sale, the game sold out at loads of Tokyo game shops, and in the last two weeks, the title has shifted a million copies. It took Wii Fit seven weeks to hit a million copies sold, and it took Wii Sports eleven weeks to hit that milestone. That makes Super Smash Bros. Brawl the fastest selling Wii game, which should make Nintendo very, very happy.

That carpet should have a tag of its own.
I've decided not to buy this game, because of the shitty PAL release schedule.
Of course by the time it does get released in europe I will probably end up buying it, but for now I say screw nintendo.
Wow, that was fast!
The death of gaming has been postponed. We narrowly avoided that one people. Just barely.
I can't help but be reminded of when The Newlywed Game premiered on ABC, while the other two channels aired a press conference with Robert McNamara.
Meh
ONLY IN JAPAN.
Why do they hate us???
JAPAGN!!!
Well, this is no surprise.
I can't wait to get this game :) Grats Nintendo!
4 more grueling weeks to wait.
Nice. And to think they didn't expect Smash Bros. (the first one) to be a success.
hmm from what i see here in germany (and maybe the rest of europe) this game dont become that hype like in U.S. or Japan.
I really dont understand how it can be fun fighting with Childish Teen-rated Chacracters. The Gameplay is nothing special for me and from what i saw in the Vids its sometimes very chaotic... For me its very overhyped but thats only my personal opinion.
I´m pretty sure that no one of my friends here in Germany know anything about Super Smash Brothers Brawl if i ask them about it.
@Black-Dog-Howls: Just until next month when Point The WiiMote At the Screen and Get Rewarded For No Reason 3 comes out.
One could assume that if it sells just as well on this side of the pond, people will be calling the store I work at asking for two things I can tell them we don't have, and if it doesn't, I can taunt them with the fact that we have the game they're dying to play but no hardware for them to play it on...
Win/Win for the Cynical Retail Store Employee!
"I like me some Brothers of Smash!" -- The population of Japan.

Have you ever played any of the other Smash Brothers games, on the N64 or Gamecube? They're incredibly fun for everybody, and unlike most fighting games you don't have to spend hours upon hours memorizing combos, which makes it a great party game As for the whole "Teen-rated characters" thing, well, that should only affect you if you're trying to game with the "hardcore" crowd and use games as a way to assert manliness instead of...
*looks at z3ntn3l's avatar*
Oh, nevermind.
This game is getting as much hype as Halo 3 but without cheesy commercials or Mountain Dew.
I can't wait to see thoses sales numbers for the US on March 19th (10 days after). ;)
damn straight
the fastest selling game on the wii makes zero use of motion control?
lol hahaha. I must admit, I did love the n64 version of this game - i couldn't believe nintendo was going to let us beat up their characters... it seemed like the antithesis of their play it safe company.
@z3ntn3l:
It's the same here in Canada. Except for my Nintendo fanboy friends. They won't shutup about it. Well I wouldn't shutup about Mass Effect or Bioshock either, but that's different.
I bet 9/10 wii owners dont even know what brawl is here.
@fragdurarsh: I'm from Canada and I know what Brawl is.. my friend is arriving on Friday with my copy for my modded Wii.. can't wait to check it out.
Perhaps now Nintendo has finally gotten the memo that games for the "hardcore" gamers print money too.
Does this mean that our editions will start out being million-seller "player's choice" editions? Do they even have those for Wii games? I'm so excited!
@AlexDitto: Cry more, I know I like both, casual and hardcore and I hope they keep it up. And if you did not notice, they made SSBB, SMG, Paper mario, Zelda etc etc etc.
@Sintariot: lol
@wizardofoz85: Could you cry about it any harder? Who cares, be thankful you're getting it at all.
i'll laugh if this outsells halo 3 in the USA.
but yeah, fat chance....
Well it's easier to sell more copies if there're more console sold. I.e. there are way more wii in the houses now than a year ago so it's quite easy to sell more copies of a AAA game :)
This is GREAT news. I'm happy to see Sakurai's OCD get rewarded with incredible sales. Hope keeps the same momentum when it come over her....wait, of course it will. We have better fanboys Stateside!
...And now I wait patiently while using CoD4 as a distraction until Mar 9th.
I just played it in a local vg store here in Japan with a bunch of Japanese youngsters - everything about this game is done super well. The environments were awesome, the animations were fluid, and the action was hectic YET very, very addicting. I can't wait to get a Wii (real soon) and sink my teeth into this game.
It really is really really good.
I guess Smash is a SMASH hit.
@fragdurarsh:
There's hype in Canada. The games been featured in all the major flyers for weeks, there's posters in every electronics section in all stores and all online shopping retailers have the game on the Video Game section front page. EB has had pre-order signs and game boxes up since last fall. My cousin who knows nothing about upcoming games even asked me about it. But it isn't even close to the marketing campaign Halo 3 had.
@fragdurarsh: I dunno where you live in Canada, but all of my wii owning friends have preordered SSBB.
Im in the don't care about smash bros camp also. I always found it was a button spam fest.
But that is personal taste. Like im the kind of crazy person who likes Mario 2 ! go figure :p
@fragdurarsh: That's simply not true. I live in Canada too so you can't speak for the whole population. I live in Toronto, ON and everyone and their mother knows about Brawl and every one of my co-workers is anxiously anticipating it.
We have a Gamecube hooked up beside our desks and almost every break we're kickin' it with Melee.
So yeah, this is awesome and don't let anyone tell you Canada isn't just as hyped because it is - everyone I know has it on preorder.
-Age
@z3ntn3l: Your "personal opinion" is not needed here. If you don't understand, all well and good, stay out of SSBB posts then.
@magically_delicious: Incorrect, you can play Brawl with the Wiimote.
[Sorry for double-posting, there's no edit button.]
@JayTapp: I hate when people call Smash Bros a button-spam/button-masher. Have you ever even played it? I'm assuming you're one of those people who tried it out for 30 seconds, got your ass handed to you, and gave up. Can you tell me how a game where every attack is no more than 2-buttons is more of a button masher than, say, Street Fighter? How [Up-B] button mashing when [X, X, X, Up, Down, Left, Right, X] is considered 'skill'?
-Age
And if you do live in Canada and haven't preordered, please get out.
Just kidding you Pokemon hating, Olimar downputting non-Game-and-Watchers. We love you all.
Personally, I can't wait to try out some of the new "alt" characters that aren't clones of the others - like Olimar and the Trainer.
@Foxstar Sixtail: Further correction - you *can* play Brawl with the Wiimote. You can use the Wiimote+Nunchuck (minor motion sensing optional), Wiimote-on-side, Classic Controller, or Gamecube Controller.
People are so uneducated...ugh.
-Age
@ageman20xx - uneducated... or maybe you're obsessed a bit? I'm not hating, just saying it might be a little perspective...
As for button mashing... Smash can feel like a button masher. But send me to hell if it isn't FUN mashing. One of my favorite moments in smash is seeing everyone running away from a bob-omb. It's seriously funny.
I might have to buy this, never played a SB game before.
It took me good two months of semi-active play to really get into SSBM. Maybe that's just me, but in the beginning it seemed so hectic I was totally lost when playing against guys who had played it for a year already. But it definitely isn't just button mashing and there's plenty of thinking what attacks to use and when.
@K-OSS: Just until next month when Point The WiiMote At the Screen and Get Rewarded For No Reason 3 comes out.
But I thought they were already up to Mario Party 8? Oh, snap!
@Ageman20XX: SF isn't a button masher because you can't mash buttons and beat a skilled player. Unlike Smash Bros. And I'm not particularly dissing it, as much as I prefer my SF and VF, Smash is tons of fun, and I'm on the verge of getting a Wii just to play this.
Raise your hand if you're surprised this sold a million this fast. Anyone?
Does anyone know the PAL release date yet? I looked on the Game web site and it says 1st May..."79 days to go"!!! If this is true, it's a joke, and I will definately be obtaining the US copy and a mod chip. I have refused my friends spare chip and ability to install it, as I see myself as loyal Nintendo fan (since the NES) but this is hard to take...
As the spy in TF2 would say:
Was the outcome ever really in doubt?
Considering Best Buy was hyping this in their Canadian flyers in the middle of LAST YEAR (remember, that was one of the first "Sonic in Brawl" leaks), I think it's safe to say that, yeah, this is a fairly big deal here in Canada.
I don't think there's going to be lines around the block or anything, but it's pretty much guaranteed to be the biggest game release in the first half of 2008 and MAY outsell Halo 3 up here since FPS games traditionally don't do as well in Canada.
@z3ntn3l:
It is that "chaos" that is why everyone loves it so much, it is a very fun party game and there is plenty of fan-service which is why peole enjoy the "childish" characters (I would argue that a good number of the characters aren't childish).
Any true Nintendo fan would love the idea of Link vs Mart and they found that in the Melee. As for the combat not being anything "special" I am confused, I haven't seen the type of combat in Smash Bros. in any other game, as for physics and ingenuity not being in the game tell that to any experienced tournament player or as some call them "tourneyfags":
NO ITEMS
FOX ONLY
FINAL DESTINATION
Melee is a very well-designed game and an incredible fighter due to it's physics and character designs, a lot of attention went into these. IF you look closely you'd see the same in Brawl, although from what I heard balance isn't as good as it was in Melee.
I'm so shocked. I mean, it's not like the cover of the game is an ad for everything Japanese people like or anything.
Let's be real here for a second. This game could be the biggest pile of garbage and it still would have sold this fast. It's hard, honestly, to even trust reviews given the amount of slobbering there was for an actual game for the Wii worth buying over the past 3 months.
@fragdurarsh:
It's been said over and over but I'll sa it again, you really don't know what you're talkin about ! All the wii owners I know knows about this game and they'll all probably buy it within 2 weeks after launch !
@Mikazukinoyaiba: If that is true I will be sad
@WiNG: Hahaha bravo. You win this thread.
