This weekend, the AOU 2008 expo goes down in Tokyo. Seeing as this is only the world's #1 arcade gaming show, you can bet some big-name games will be paraded around. Like King of Fighters XII, which will be shown publicly for the first time, albeit in video form (it sadly won't be playable). Little is known about this latest installment in the series, though it should be coming to the US in 2009 on both PS3 and 360. We've also heard that the game will be neither 2D nor 3D.
Street Fighter IV will also be making an appearance, most likely in playable form. Despite persistent reports that Osaka-based DIMPS (comprised of former SNK staff) are working on Capcom's flagship fighter, Capcom themselves are officially stating that the project is being developed in-house. Either way, should be a good weekend for fighter fans, who probably haven't partied this hard since the summer of '93.

Neither 2D nor 3D? Is it 4D or higher? I'd imagine time travel won't enhance the series too much.

I can forget Street Fighter and any other 2D (unless they make a new Clayfighter), KoF is always so great it more then fills the need and enjoyment factor for fighting games.

The programmers have stated their intention is to create the "ultimate 2D fighting game". someone said this from a site.

Just make sure Fiolina is in, that is all I ask. I would rather it be in some form of hi-res 2D, than 2.5, but I look forward to it regardless.

the only way any fighting game would be good these days is to make it into an online mmo. Where you have to fight your way towards world domination. Mmmmm thousands of people online beating the crap & throwing fireball at one another....soooo cool.

Yea, could've sworn I've seen that stated on some random places and maybe InsertCredit, they, well, they WANTED to redraw and pretty up all the character sprites, I guess we'll just have to wait... or google... damn :(
@Saint - Incorrect, Tekken 6 will be 25.6D and already features an external controller that will break your arm in several places while a fan blows a calming wind at you to properly simulate the one-on-one combat that ensues.
Needless to say, KOF XII will certainly make use of this add-on.

@Ruglia: I think Yuki's actually referring to Fio from Metal Slug. (Who, in my personal opinion, had no business being in KoF:MI2, and sucked as well. Which pisses me off, because Fio is my favorite character in Metal Slug.)
I'm suddenly very wary hearing "Neither 2D nor 3D", because this was the last series I thought I could depend on for some good old 2D awesomeness. *sigh* (Seriously. Street Fighter's not full-out 2D anymore, Guilty Gear's kind of not even a fighting game anymore, and now KoF is going the 2.5D route? Looks like my only reprieve are the small scale games and doujin fighters.)
@TalKeaton: Totally an orange Prinny: Luckily we had SNK VS Capcom: Match of the Millenium, easily one of the best fighters ever made and the best handheld fighter ever made.
I wish they would remake that for DS or PSP.

@Kenofthedead: I was always amazed Match of the Millenium wasn't immediately snatched up for a GBA remake. It still floors me it took as long as it did to get a follow up to Cardfighter's Clash after the NeoGeo Pocket Color went belly up.

2008 is turning out to be a spectacular year for fighters.
This and Blazblue has me very interested.

The saddest part about all these fighting games is thinking how long its going to take localize so few of them. Not like there's *that much* to translate, but like, KOFXI took almost a year...Then again...no region locking = win for importing, but still, it gets expensive...

@Sinnbox: Capcom managed to hire Shinkiro, the artist who had done the KOF games artwork, right before the first Capcom vs SNK game. Naturally, he did all the "SNK" side art for those two games; that may be what you were thinking of.
In other words, if Capcom owns SNK, it's not in a legal paperwork sense.

They announced it for PS3, they haven't confirmed it for 360 yet Kotaku. They said they were looking into the 360 as well but only the PS3 port is confirmed at this point. I'm sure it will get put on both but just should be clear.

This is great, but I'll still miss/remember the vintage Neo Geo games. But I guess that in order to stay great/relavant KoF has to change with the times...
Not 2D or 3D? My money is on deformation based 2D animation. Oh well, all they need to do is upgrade the resolution to get the fans salivating.
