Followers of the high definition disc wars will probably care about online movie rental outfit Netflix putting all of its eggs in the Blu-ray basket, just like everyone else who isn't Microsoft has. The company announced today that, "as of now," it will only purchase movies in the Sony-backed format, phasing out HD-DVD by the end of the year. Subscribers, including yours truly, have already been informed of the change, but a handy press release from Netflix lays the whole thing out.
We can't wait until we stop having to pretend to care about the format war, but anticipate the thousands of submissions featuring Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-ons repurposed for homemade Gundam suits and whatnot. Someone's probably in the process of gutting an NES and stuffing it in the thing right now.
Netflix, Citing a Clear Signal From the Industry, Will Carry High-Def DVDs Only in Blu-ray Format [Netflix - thanks, everyone!]

i feel bad for all those early HD adopters right now..
cant HD-DVD just give up? it would be better for everyone :/
HD-Fail.
@mossberg: It's part of the nature of gambling, I fear. Some win, some lose.
The internet's still easier.
This proves the two can't be "just friends."
Someone's probably in the process of gutting an NES and stuffing it in the thing right now.
Thanks for ruining the surprise.
As long as I can get a decently priced dual player, I'll be fine.
Good...now I can finally get Transformers on blu-ray
I wish i had netflix :/
I have both, I was personally hoping HD DVD would win and Blu Ray on my PS3 would become a proprietory format like it's UMD discs. I guess not, ah well =(
@gwangi:
No point in getting a dual player. Everything that's on HD-DVD will be on Bluray in a year. Plus HD-DVD disks scratch easier.
Hate to be blunt, but this is just one more nail in the coffin. Though it is ironic that with Sony's past track record, Blu-Ray has succeeded where other formats endorsed by Sony at first have failed.
LoL at your last paragraph Mike. Win :D
ahhh the NES idea is so awesome! i seen some computers stuffed in that thing and some other creations, to bad mine worked or i would mod it out.
na na na-na, na na na-na, hey hey hey, go-od bye...
Good maybe this will finally kill hd-dvd.
Now maybe they'll actaully buy a decent amount of BD discs. Seriously, the top 10 movies in my queue are all BD and they all have either "long wait/very long wait". Aggravating... but still way better than having to deal with a human at a store.
and "Best Buy to Recommend Blu-ray as the Customer's Digital Format Choice", too.

I feel bad for all the people who bought HD-DVD players as frankly, for a while this looked like it could go either way. Both formats had their advantages. I am glad one is being chosen but even still, the costs are way to high for the average joe. I don't see blu-ray overtaking DVD anytime soon. It may have beaten HD-DVD but that still don't mean it won't end up like laserdisc, a format that was leaps and bounds ahead of everything else but still never overtook the VHS market. I do have to say though that if one thing about blu-ray winning does upset me it is that I was quite pleased to see HD-DVD adopt a region free system. At least with blu-ray Japan and Hong Kong are in the same region as me in the US but it still totally bites for our poor friends in Europe who have to deal with long delays and inferior releases with material deleted from the Region A discs.
hell yeah lol, i want a high-def player stuffed in an original NES casing... that would be badass.
it's about time, there's no point in having 2 dominant formats.
i may have a vested interest in bluray but still people are just going to be wasting a lot of money unless one side comes out on top. for good.
Kinda make sense though. HD-DVD had a size of 30 gigs and they have some Blue Rays on the horizon that can store 100 gigs on that 5 cent piece of plastic. Not a Sony fan but Blue Lasers are cool.
This is really sad for all the people that bought HD-DVD players though. It isn't like this originally looked so cut and dry.
Good news! So long HD-DVD...good riddance.
@DefDealer:
Maybe, but first we have to wait for Paramount to reverse sell-out... Since they seem to prefer to side with the format that sells less overall I think they may not return to Blu-ray until it is being phased out by whatever the next big thing is :P
Maybe it really is over of HD-DVD... I was holding out for a sort of come back, but at this point I think the its more likely Duke Nukem Forever will actually ship this year !!!
@Ceezsa: HD-DVD uses a blue laser as well just like blu-ray discs.
I'm really glad I didn't give in to urges to buy HD-DVD before. The problem is that Paramount and Universal still are exclusive w/the format. I have a feeling that if Universal goes Blu-ray, Paramount would be allowed to follow.
Microsoft is really pushing digital downloads aren't they.
Good job Netflix
:D
for the next nail in the coffin, Blockbuster must do the same thing.
Best Buy just sent out a press release that beginning March 1st, they will endorse Blu-ray as the single HD format for the consumer.
I have to admit, this is all happening far quicker than I expected. By May 1st, people won't even remember HD-DVD.
Well it looks like Sony actually knew what it was doing by making the PS3 a Blu-ray compatible device.
Either that or they got totally lucky and are loving it. ;)
Bluray winning was arbitrary.
I bought a ps3 and got lucky that bluray won, but my decision wasn't made because I gave a damn about the format. I wanted a ps3 for games (i know laugh at my foolishness)
I don't know why consumers reward companies that pull shit like this.
Everyone outta consider pirating every bluray movie I could, just to spite hollywood and sony for doing this retarded shit.
And just to make it burn even more, I'm gonna use an HD-DVDR drive to do it.
sad sad day... all the poor people who invested in HD-DVD are getting hosed. To add insult to injury, the probably have to sell the HD-DVD library to Gamestop for a lose and repurchase in Blu-Ray format.
As does Best Buy:

GG HD-DVD and Toshiba. WB was the nail @ the coffin and today is literally the hammer driving it in.
/pours out his '40 in remembrance of his homie, HD-DVD
and I wanted to get Heros in HD from Netflix!!
I'll start to care when they drop regular DVD. THEN I'll consider buying Blu-Ray.
*points and laughs at Paramount*
Like I always say, I got 6 free movies with it and it's a superior reg. def DVD Upscaler that doesn't use my 360's drive so in the end I'm really glad I purchased it. Whenever I watch Blu-Rays I keep thinking it's *using* my PS3.
Plus, HD-DVDs were cooler and *I* got to experience that :)
@mpmaley:
Literally?
I'm more sorry for all y'all suckas who bought either. It's clear that digital distribution is coming and it will stay. I can watch a high-def movie on Xbox Live while I download it. Why would I want a disc?
And sorry to all of you who just must have Spiderman 3's super mega awesome collector's set edition part two, but digital distribution is far far far better for the planet earth -- and you'll thank me later, your wallets too! Though I bet that movie and game marketers will still find someway to get you to re-download the same movie over and over again.
@interstate78: Umm, what's wrong with *using* your PS3?!?!
One thing that sux is why didnt someone just come out with a new Codec instead of these new disc and expensive players. I look at how DivX could compress DVD quality video onto a 700 mb CD. With a codec just as good or better than Divx the 8.5 gb on dual layer DVDs should have been sufficient for high def.
@zombieistired: i thought blockbuster was already carry blu-ray exclusively.
@balls187: there are games
Nice :)
@interstate78: Except that you need the 360 still to watch the HDDVD's. Once either one goes, your screwed and there ain't going to be anymore hddvd players around to play your new coasters.
@balls187:the fact that BDs are the defacto format for the PS3 means that regardless of the formats popularity, all the games would BE BDs and would skew the BD numbers numbers. Blu-Ray winning was a matter of time. What made HD-DVD a loss was Microsoft's failure to back it 100% and Microsoft backstabbing the DVD Forum in the back by backing its own download service.
Frankly I hope the service fails so Microsoft can learn to be a fair business partner.
@jun581: Blockbuster online carries HDDVD, but in stores they are heavy on the blu ray only thing now. Most blockbusters got in big blu ray displays now that show off blu ray films all day as well as them selling PS3's in store in special blockbuster bundle packs.
HD DVD is really dying. Damn.
Why cant we just stick 720p movies on good old DL-DVD's? 8 gig is more than enough - 300 on XBLM is only 6-7 gig.
@mossberg: Don't feel bad. I'll just get a blue-ray player when I can no longer find HD-DVD movies. Hopefully this will lead to some decent sales on hd-dvd movies. I got the HD-DVD add-on for the 360 as a birthday present a year or two ago. I can't remember now.
@dadeisvenm: BD video games are not counted in video sales. Nielson video sales data only covers actual films and tv released on either format.
@panfriedcharlie:
can you burn your live downloaded movies on a hd support ?
ohhh
@Adam In Texas:
sad
