Wow Yahtzee, you've done the impossible. You have a television program running previews of a freaking 3-minute review. Yeah, did you hear? X-Play will be running a snippet of your upcoming Zero Punctuations every Tuesday night. And including the clip's introduction, run time, and accompanying in-show bumpers, we wouldn't be surprised if this Tuesday teaser took just as long as your actual Wednesday review.
It's ludicrous media piggybacking, but we don't blame you...pending that you sleep on a big pile of greenbacks after a hard day's work.
"X-Play" to Feature World Premieres of New "Zero Punctuation" VideosWith Weekly Sneak Previews
Previews of The Escapist Magazine's Popular Web Video Series Debut on "X-Play" Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 pm
LOS ANGELES, February 11, 2008 - "Zero Punctuation" is coming to "X-Play," giving viewers of the most-watched video game show on television an exclusive sneak peek at each new episode of the Web's most popular video game review series. Beginning Tuesday, February 12, short previews of the wildly popular videos from creator Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw and The Escapist magazine will become an ongoing "X-Play" feature. Previews of "Zero Punctuation" videos will premiere exclusively on "X-Play" every Tuesday evening, before the Wednesday premiere of the full, uncut reviews at www.escapistmagazine.com, which will remain the series' online home. "Zero Punctuation" makes its world broadcast premiere on "X-Play," February 12, 2008 at 8 pm ET/PT, only on G4.
"Zero Punctuation" has become one of the video game world's most popular and infamous sources of criticism, unleashing reviews that combine humor and scathing insight with uproarious results. Each review combines deceptively simple animation with breathlessly blunt language, mercilessly mocking the weakest points in even the most critically acclaimed games.
"Every game has its faults, even the truly great ones," said Morgan Webb, host of "X-Play." "Nothing is funnier than seeing the mighty mocked."
"I was already really excited about the new 'X-Play' format," said Adam Sessler, host of "X-Play." "Now I can barely contain myself. We're dedicated to giving gaming fans what they want and we know they want 'Zero Punctuation.'"
"'Zero Punctuation' is game reviewing like it's never been done before," said Russ Pitts, Acquisitions and Production Manager at The Escapist. "We're pleased to share the schizophrenia with 'X-Play's' audience."
The "Zero Punctuation" previews are the newest addition to the updated "X-Play" format, which features a daily comprehensive overview of video game news and culture, in addition to the brutally honest reviews for which the show is known. Every weeknight at 8 pm, new, half-hour episodes of "X-Play" will give viewers a comprehensive update on each day's videogame-related developments, along with a wide range of new features, including behind-the-scenes sneak peeks at games in development; interviews with industry luminaries; live, hands-on demonstrations of games before they hit store shelves; and in-depth analysis of the latest videogame trends. How silly.
I hope they keep it nice and foul! Last thing I wanna see is a sanitized version of ZP.
Wow he's going to have to tone down all the bad language then :-) otherwise the X-Play things going to sound like Morse code with all the bleeps.
The funny part is, he was a starving, wretched, miserable writer on a humor site up until he made his first video review. (True fact from his site. He mentioned it enough.)
Within a few weeks, he became one of the most famous and successful people on the internet.
@Nglan: XPlay Zeropunctuation = ThreeKids One Piece?
Wow he has come a long way from being just some guy on youtube. Congrats to Yahtzee keep the funny coming.
Everything about ZP is gold. From the concept, to the writing, to the delivery, to the visual presentation.
I would expect nothing less from someone named Yahtzee.
Previews? For a 5 minute review? That's ridiculous. Why don't they just show the whole bloody thing. Would be better than watching Sessler doing his hyperactive ADHD act.
Congrats to Yahtzee, but thumbs down to X-Play and their manufactured non-sequitur. I can't stand to watch that show any longer than 60 seconds.
I didn't mind the old X-Play, regardless of how popular it is to bad mouth them ("OMG MORGAN WEBB LOOKS LIKE A MAN AND I CANT THINK OF ANYTHING CLEVER TO SAY"). Their new format doesn't set well with me. I miss their horrible jokes and horrible skits. It reeked of jaded cynicism. Now it appears like they're trying to do this "legitimate news" thing and it just doesn't work for me. They come off like a 24 hour news network, trying to cram information in wherever they can in a desperate attempt to fill time.
Every bit of success/money/recognition he receives is alright by me. He's one of those guys that you want to root for.
I appreciate Zero Punctuation as much as the next guy. . . But do we really need previews of the reviews? O.o The reviews aren't exactly long to begin with. What are we gonna get a random yellow screen with the sound of the censors beeping out the profanity?
This just seems sort of odd and more like X-play trying to co opt the "cool" of Zero Punctuation.
I'd prefer they play the whole thing, but then of course they'd have to censor the language and who the hell wants that.
This is a publicity stunt that is bound to fail. I mean the reviews are funny, although entirely inappropriate and vulgar. Last time I checked, X-Play was on G4, not HBO.
Wait a 3 minute review is going to have previews? Stupid Xplay trying to cash in on something that is popular.
This seems to indicate G4 shows something other than Ninja Warrior and Cops.
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: Dont forget Cheaters. I swear one day I was off of work and the only thing they showed all day was Cops 2.0.
Yahtzee is awesome, can't say the same about X-Play though :o/
Ten bucks says his reviews only caught popularity because of Kotaku.
@JustJake: Maybe they will transmit it in slow mode cause yahtzee speaks very fast...
@JustJake: There's a 2.0 version of Cops?!?!?
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: You say that like there's something wrong with Ninja Warrior.
2008 - The year of Yahtzee.
Ride it well - you're already on a crash course with the surface of the earth. Soon teh hardcore will be calling your reviews 'old' and saying things like 'there's no originality'
Bitten by the hand that feeds, you just can't confirm it yet.
Love the reviews for the most part. :)
Even I had to stop watching X-Play after it got past a certain degree of pandering and vapid. They were good for a while - a long while even.
Maybe I'll have to record some and check them out soon. The recent ep with Gerstmann sounded almost like a Fox interview with their stragegy of taking an assertion, making it an assumption, then basing everything around it BEFORE discussing. I have to give Jeff credit for that - I hadn't watched him before, but he didn't fall for it that time and argued that games in general are getting derivative, not just those from Japan. The hosts seemed to think that because of Portal, Bioshock, and CoD4(?) that all Western games were cutting-edge innovative now and everyone else is slipping... lol
I actually just traded in my hooker with three sets of genitalia for a copy of Devil May Cry 4. Go figure.
I wasn't aware anyone even watched g4... ever since tech tv was merged (murdered) I've made it a point to avoid the channel like the plague. So yeah, I'm still bitter about that.
I guess it's good to see things comming Yahtzee's way though, I like his sense of humor and his reviews are usually spot on.
Personally, I think Yahtzee should be given his own show on G4TV and X - Play should be scaled down to a three minute weekly video on Escapist Magazine. I think the viewership would increase.
"Runaway success" doesn't even begin to describe ZeroPunctuation. I hope Yahtzee sleeps soundly on his huge pile of money.
@ihatepeterh: That's its on 21 hours a day is a bit of a problem.
@Kj719: Yea, its re-runs of Cops episodes with "chat" features on the bottom of the screen and trivia and crap in between commercial breaks. Sorta like what they did with Star Trek TNG when they were showing that.
I had to watch it for like an hour once while I waited for my friend to get his oil changed and I wanted to gnaw my own neck from my shoulders at about the 10 minute mark.
meh i'll stick with going to the direct source. Yahtzee and [www.escapistmagazine.com] deserves the traffic not G4 or other sites for that matter that feel as if they were the ones to discovered him.
I know they'll have the bleep everything out, but I've always found the "bleeping" to add to the humor of it. Just the hint of a "uck" or "hit" or "enis sucking whore" is great.
G4 TV: riding coattails since 2001!
I want cursing... :(
Oh well, it'll just get out to even more gamers and people that only play on Live or watch TV.
A hard day's work, that's a good one!
@Gadgetron:
I know what ya mean.. but it's not all bad, this will introduce him to more people that might not know about him and that's a good thing.
Is it just me, or does this really scream out like G4's just begging for the interwebers to start watching their channel?
how would the formula work for a preview?
"This week Ive been playing Devil may cry 4, which is a button mashing slash..."
COMING SOON TO AN INTERNET NEAR YOU
Lowtax from SomethingAwful must be crying in his Mangosteen over this startling revelation.
ZP + XPlay = money. Good for you ZP, and no this isn't sarcasm.
Asper-
It's "cool" to bash X-Play because it's fucking awful.
The jokes aren't funny. The "facts" are untrue (according to X-Play,no Ghostbusters games are coming out,and no lightgun is available for next gen systems other than Wii). The reviews are excuses to try to unfunnily MST3K the games. Morgan Webb's voice makes my ears bleed, and Sessler's attitude makes me want to punch him in the mouth. They're the two smarmiest people ever to live. Sessler doesn't understand the difference between Miss and Ms.
Even though I did think of other things to say,I'll still point out Webb has an adam's apple. Also, she wants all women in the gaming media to be treated as equals to the men,yet uses her body to become popular, with swimsuit pictures and such.
$_$
Why not just play the whole thing.
You know, a preview of a 4 minute web trailer sounds really silly to me.
Still will be better then anything else on g4
"Within a few weeks, he became one of the most famous and successful people on the internet."
Ah, to be young and naive. And stupid.
Kind of a strange move, honestly, but I don't really see anything bad coming from this. I doubt the the reviews will be tamer in the future, just brutally edited for cable television. Of course, even if it wasn't, who watches G4?
is G4/x-play that desperate to get viewers?
Too bad ZeroPunctuation isn't funny.
You know you've made it big when you're a blip on G4.
...hee hee...
No, really, congratulations to him and his. I'm glad he's getting more attention and new fans from the few people who aren't aware of him already. It's not entirely surprising, but it's nice all the same.
@Asper: EXACTLY! I'd been a fan from X-Play since G4 was called ZDNetTV, and X-Play was called Gamespot TV. Yeah, back in them days when it was Adam and Kate Botello. I really loved everything about the program, especially the hilarious skits.
However, fast forward to January 14th(?) when they adopted the new format. I swear I saw about 3 episodes before I'd seen a single review. I can't even tune into the show anymore - it's too much of a disappointment. It's not Adam and Morgan's fault, but man. I can't watch them anymore on their own show. :(
If the channel had more things about games and less about ultimate ninja and cop shows id think about watching it.
But anyway, why watch zero punctuation on tv at a distinct time when you can see em on the interwebs?
I don't care what anyone says. Morgan Webb is my Goddess, and I would fall to my knees and worship should I got the chance. The wife has approved her as my "if you had a chance in hell" person and everything (her's is Brendon Fraiser, if anyone was wondering).
Oh, and X-Play has it's moments, when it's not completely awful, and I find Adam and Morgan to be the only two people on G4 that seems to know anything about games and are remotely watchable.
/goes to look at the Morgan-Bikini-Wallpaper on my phone...
@DONNYchiban:
Was G4 ever ZDNetTV? I think G4 was G4 and TechTV was ZDTV, which eventually after becoming TechTV was sold to G4 and became G4TechTV, before being consumed entirely.
I understand your position, though I don't think I had been watching it all that long. The first episode of Gamespot TV I saw was the preview of Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore for the PS2, and it didn't feel like too long before the gears were already turning for Extended Play.
I'd have to be pretty fucking bored to watch it nowadays. I'm not sure how much that has to do with the new format and how much it has to do with not really getting much from it anymore, though.
