Kotakuite the-hypnotoad toiled for months on this truly incredible 16 bit Samus painting. It is approximately three feet tall and stands watch over his desk. I've seen quite a few pixel paintings in my time and none of them comes even close to this. No decals here folk, that's all hand painted. Amazing work, the-hypnotoad! Make the jump to check out a nice close-up of the work.

That's amazing! I want to learn how to do that, and make a life-sized Link.
Very nice work
I was impressed with the push-pin Samus, but this is just stunning. I want one of those to hang up in my dorm, though I suppose having Samus stare down at me 24/7 could get a little disturbing.
Wow, that is amazing. All hail the-hypnotoad.
*Clap* *Clap*
Cool. Looks great dood.
And taking first place: Hypnotoad!
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Great work. Very impressive.
Sweet!
Words can't express...
Bravo.
I'm impressed. Well done!
Quite nice. I would like to see more.
that is awesome, I'm just learning painting, but maybe one day i can get up to that level hehe (start with atari and work my way up? :P )
Wow! Amazing! Simply amazing!
I'm looking for something sarcastic to say, but such words are failing me right now. Very good work!
Thats sexy and I want one.
That must suck when he moves to another house.
Other than that, it's amazing!
Marred only by the fact that there's a RotJ poster on the other wall, and not an ESB poster.
(kidding!... mostly)
All glory to the hypnotoad!
How did the-hypnotoad get all the lines so straight? Looks quite meticulous.
nice :D
That is the most beautiful thing I've seen all weekend. could I get mother brain in my bedroom?
Don't get me wrong when I say this but isn't this doable with someone who has no artistic skills? The thing is 100% beautiful but, can't he just enlarge a 16-bit image, get a square stencil, then just copy the image, block by block over to his wall?
Cause that's what I'm thinking of doing if I ever do something like this. But if he didn't do it that way and just seriously hand painted the whole thing then kudos to him, he is a great artist.
Am I the only one who noticed the same picture in photoshop on his computer screen? I mean you can "hand paint" with a wacom tablet in Photoshop or do mega sized pixel art in Illustrator as vectors... I'm not knocking the picture, badass to have a giant Samus and all that, I'm just saying you could save yourself tons of time with just photoshop and a nice big print from kinkos... still cool either way.
no one else notice the thing from that movie "Titan A.E." on the bookshelf? the action figure thing, it's the bad guy alien. i want that... it's been a while since i've seen it. at least, i think that's it...
Not a decal... but what a decal it WOULD be.
This is fascinating. Your next project should be to convert the rest of the wall to some sort of setting for [Super Metroid].
Holy. Crap.
I am amazed.
How did you... With the pixels and the...
Awesome.
All hail hypnotoad!
@aceshigh521: Well, if you did that it would not only take a lot of patience and precision but mixing the paint to the right shades and hue would actually take some skill and a bit of painting knowledge.
If I didn't live in an apartment, I'd try and top that.
I hate this almost as much as I hate myself.
Almost.
ahhaha jk, it's awesome. verrry nice, Michelangelo!
@UnJamma6096: Heh, I just moved into this house so it should be up there for awhile ;) The temporary nature of murals is something I'm used to. I did an awesome Tick one in college and it was painted over a few months later.
@MrBionic: The other two special edition posters are just to the left of the ROTJ one :D
@baked ham: It was a lot of creating templates in photoshop, printing out onto cardstock, and cutting out areas to paint with an exacto-knife. You can see one of the templates vaguely at the bottom center under the whiteboard.
@leadster618: Yep, I could have saved a LOT of time with a color print from Kinkos or whatever. But doing it yourself and making it real, not a printout, is kind of the point (for me anyway).
@excaleranth: Good spot. I picked up that model years ago (I think it's called a Drej?).
Thanks to everyone for the good words; glad to share it with my fellow game-enthusiasts at Kotaku!
Liessssssssss, it was done by photoshop and microsoft vista. I kid, nice picture hypnotoad at least you can hypnotize those who disagree with you.
@UnJamma6096: I wouldn't mind moving into a house where the previous owner painted all over the walls.
And I mean actual works of art like this, not just slapping up a bucket and calling it a day.
I think if I get a house I'd like to do something like that with a whole scene from Mario or something.
G'job.
Very, very impressive. Just wow.
Nice, 8-bit sprites are pretty easy to do, but those 16-bit sprites are really tricky what with the greater number of pixels and the larger colour palette.
That's ridiculously awesome. Do want. BAD.
@the-hypnotoad: That's awesome. You're awesome. That is all.
@bob-e: Samus is watching you masturbate.
Wow, two minutes on photoshop. I am going to do the same to a picture off my room.
HEY!! I have that EXACT same Return of the Jedi poster hanging up in my room with that EXACT same frame! Whoa~
Oh and awesome job with Samus =)
taken straight from super metroid... but it was a cool idea. but I'm not replacing my metroid prime poster with this, perhaps I'll place them next to eachother.. I'm having trouble seeing the handpainted part in this. am I the only one?
Very nice.
@Colibri: GTFO mah internets.
Futurama, Star Wars, Metroid, good tastes!
That is Cool! I remember getting on sooo much trouble at home when i painted this
"http://kingofman.homestead.com/files/mural.GIF"
on my wall back in 1996.. lol
*would pay for*
@argh:
That is hawt! Only in Zero-Suit, though.
You know you've accomplished a minor miracle when you can post something that doesn't receive a SINGLE sarcastic comment from a Kotaku reader. Respect.
I painted pong on my wall. Score 'n' all. I soon painted over it.
@Fitz Rhapsody: Was that sarcasm I detected?
Wow, I like this. I much prefer the 2d Metroid's artwork to the Retro style one with the shoulders that don't seem to fit in.
@the-hypnotoad: OH.. hehe. Well then, kudos! ;)
sorry to sound like skeptical sally but im not buying it. that pic looks photoshopped.
why is that metroid pic on his computer? behind the kotaku window?
did he just take a pic of his room and masked the image on to the wall?
screen printed on to the wall sounds more belivable. hand painted?
lets see the tools he used.
@the-hypnotoad: Excellent work! Now do a zero-suit version and you will have nothing but praises. ;D
Incredible. I couldn't even paint one square black pixel, let alone all that. Congratulations. ^^
