The Raccoon City Times has a short but interesting interview up with Silent Hill V co-writer Patrick J. Doody. He covers some interesting subjects in the page long interview like the differences between writing for games as opposed to film, the difficulties of navigating the Silent Hill lore and how this game will be the scariest of the lot.
Overall, the game's scares will be the biggest we've had, and that's not just jump scares - the eerie feeling of dread will be heightened because the designers can really immerse you emotionally through amazing environments and wild-looking demons. However, story wise, Silent Hill hasn't typically been "scary," as it's more about the depths of madness and terror it takes the player. Clearly I can't talk about the story of the game, but I can say that we have worked very hard on making it the most disturbing drama of the entire series. My hope is that players will be affected by the game's end.
While Doody doesn't give too much away about the plot of the game, his explanation of the writing experience is extremely interesting. Nice bit of weekend reading for Silent Hill fans.

I never really got into Silent Hill. It's a shame because I played a bit of it and really enjoyed it. But I perferred Resident Evil... just because I had more fun playing it I guess.
Now Resident Evil has gone down the pan (Exception being the AWESOME RE:4) it'd be good to jump in on the latest game and see whats new :).
Will it be my first Silent Hill game?
Perhaps.
Good article, cept on that website having the quoted materials from the interview in italics on a black background = fucking large headache. :x
I am still wary about the game though, but will give it a chance when it comes out.
My heart is with Resident Evil 5. Especially after the debacle that was RE:UC, I need something that justifies my RE faboyism.
Howdy, Doody!
@Witzbold:
sorry, it all looked a bit plain before i edited it.
@Edmon: Resident Evil and Silent Hill are quite different actually. Resident Evil is a more fast, action based survival horror game where most of the "scare" comes from being surprised and the fun comes from the action (especially RE4; which was fun as hell, but not particularly scary).
Silent Hill is slower, more atmospheric and moody, and the "scare" comes from the atmosphere and "wrongness" of the town. The fun comes from the atmosphere and storyline.
I'm going to hope this one turns out well. I'm kinda worried though after the Silent Hill movie and Silent Hill Origins.
The only reason I am excited for this game is to see Yahtzee review it. Other than that I haven't paid much attention to this series since the third installment and I don't think that will change with "Silent Hill 5".
For some reason I am excited for the new "Alone in the Dark" game though. Hopefully Atari can stay afloat long enough to release it.
Really, the scariest? Alright!! I figured he'd say something like "this game will deliver pulse-pounding terror that is is slightly less scary than 2 but scarier than 3" or "this game will be almost but not quite the best Silent Hill yet," but now that I know it's the scariest, I'm totally pumped!!!
I love Silent Hill, love the series & played all of it. I enjoy The Room the best. The Silent Hill film nicely done, that is one game to film that doesn't suck and capture the mood of the game perfectly. Go watch it if you haven't.
@underground_slacker: No worries, it could just be my monitor too. But yeah the italics + white font on a black background just make it a bit hard on the eyes haha. Great stuff nonetheless though! :)
My eyes... =_= They almost bleed. Someone kill the "designer" of that site, I'm having too much of a headache to do it myself. Great read though, at least they managed to cast a bit of confidence in me about the game. That was amazingly more assuring than the video interview of the team that was posted few months ago.
Actually a film that is even better than the Silent Hill film itself (which I did hate) would be Jacobs Ladder. Also quite a bit of the SH games Yamaoka took from what he saw in Jacobs Ladder. Good stuff but an old movie.
As hyped as I am for the game, (and believe you me, I'm fucking hyped), I'm actually even more excited about the soundtrack. My favorite part of all of the SH games is Yamoaka's music. SH V could just be Pong with his music in the background and I'd buy it.
I really do hope this is good. It's one of my favorite series, even though the combat has always been crap. They say they intend it to be more like 2, which was my favorite, and the concept sounds a bit like the source material, Jacob's Ladder - so I don't know, maybe they'll pull it off. If the combat system is fun that could be a huge step for the series. Now, everything else on the other hand, we'll have to see how that's handled.
@Witzbold: That movie scared the living crap out of me. And the "explanation" at the end disturbed me far more than what had come before. Apparently Thom Yorke also found it creepy enough to include as a sample in the middle of Radiohead's "Rabbit in Your Headlights".
I like RE, but nothing can be compared with Silent Hill, now that's a survival-horror disturbing game. My fav is 2, but i have a strong feeling for the PSX one.
@catapult37: Great movie though eh? The only reason why I checked up on it was because I remember Yamaoka referring to it in an interview he did with a game mag or something long time ago.
Oh God I hope these guys do not mess up Silent Hill what I have seen so far looks good. However a developer switch can sometimes be bad news or really good news. All I know is that Silent Hill Origins wasn't really that good and don't even get me started on Silent Hill 4 (yeah I know 4 was made by same company just saying the last 2 games were disappointing). However this a another new developer which are apparently huge Silent Hill fans so hopefully they turn out a great game.
The series has gone downhill since SH2 and I don't see any reason why this game would change that. A good move would be to drop the words "Scary" "wild-looking demons" "disturbing" "madness" "terror" "dread". Sounds like the keywords for a Saw movie (and I hate those).
Stop trying so hard to be disturbing, and just make a game with a compelling story and characters and you'll be just fine.
@catapult37: Jacob's ladder, has one of the most disturbing endings ever. The deleted scenes, are far more disturbing :s.
Im more sad that the story is taken over by someone else who "thinks" they know the lore and history not only that now it seems they want to "add" to that lore.
I am very scared.
@Rivers: Time for me to go and buy the DVD then, assuming thats where the deleted scenes can be found.
@Witzbold: Then it looks like they succeeded, as this is supposed to be the "scariest" Silent Hill yet!
As long as there's no stupid housekeeping like in 4 I'm sold.
@Witzbold: Jacob's Ladder was an excellent movie. And yeah, you can totally tell that the Silent Hill designers pulled HEAVILY from that movie and that's a good thing too! Hell the subway part of Silent Hill 3 was pretty much straight out of Jacob's Ladder.
@Rivers: Wtf? I don't remember those! And I lent my DVD to someone. :(
@VanFinale: That's what they said about the movie. Gans is supposedly a huge Silent Hill fan and look at how that turned out. I've learned not to trust the whole "i'm a big fan so it'll be good" any more.
@spork: Yes, we have to remember that "big fans" generally are the ones who put out fanfics, and we all know how those turn out. In fact, I think that I will consider the movie to be just a horrible fanfic from now on.
@Yuki: lol too right mate.
@spork & Witzbold:
You can watch the deleted scenes on youtube, but, some of them are huge spoilers.
@Yuki: And then John was a zombie.
@Witzbold: I really really hope that this game turns out well. You never know, it could suprise us all and be the greatest thing since SH 2. Or it could be a pile of garbage that tarnishes Silent Hill in such a way that we will never get a sequel.
Hope springs eternal!
@TheCleaningGuy: Oh I think you'll get a sequel no matter what, but here's hoping for quality.
Silent Hill > All
I can't wait for this game. Silent Hill has been one of my favorite series since the PSX days, and I've bought and loved each game--even though SH4 was a bit on the odd side, as Silent Hill games go.
If this is really the "most disturbing" SH yet, I'm all for it!
~
Patrick J. doody: "Overall, Silent Hill 3 really feels like a complete experience for me - from great game play to fantastic story. [...] Alex Shepherd feels very new to the series. He's less a victim of circumstance and more a man of action."
So SH3 has a "Fantastic story", and the new guy is "a man of action". Message received. No need to spell it out.
Ok, people, now it's a fact: SH5 will suck ass. There's nothing to see here.
I'm kinda hopin' this'll be decent, I enjoy the Silent Hill series...
Not playing it mind you, it freaks the hell outta me, I'm currently watching a friend o' mine play through SH2. I tend to run away squeeling like a marmaset when pyramid head appears...
or when there is loud machine noises...
or no noise...
or when the radio crackles...
...
-shudder-
@Witzbold: I share you fears, but, I think it would be great if the series evolves. Silent Hill has already delivered some extraordinary goods, while it would be nice if it could deliver those same goods again, I think it's even better if it can deliver something new and equally excellent. They haven't convinced me yet that they are able to do that, but at least they are trying. Or so they say.
I'm still not buying into SH5, even though I love the Silent Hill games. I'm skepitcal about this one until I play the game, specially after the failure that was Silent Hill Origins.
If the Collective really can deliver a great experience like the wirter said (wich I really doubt), I hope that Konami keeps them working on the series.
I quite like the Silent Hill series, so I'm looking forward to this one, though not without reservations. I'm a bit nervous about it for a few reasons. But I remain hopeful. I'm mostly hoping it will be another solid game like the others in the series, though I'd be delighted if it turned out to be a big, pleasing change, a la RE4. I don't really see that happening just yet.
I heard this game will be the worst as in the most terrible and crappy Silent Hill game to ever be released. But don't take my word for it. I still hope it will turn out good.
Hm. What does everyone have against Silent Hill: Origins? I'm currently playing it right now (about halfway, I gather) and it's fairly enjoyable. I've played SH 2 and 3 and found those very good as well (2 being the best, as is popular opinion on that matter as well).
@Irenicus-the one and only: I'm glad to see you're friends with people who can tell the future.
@Irenicus-the one and only:
dude it couldnt be worse than origins, 4 boss fights and 3 hours gameplay.....
You know, I was about to say that SH4 is the worst Silent Hill. But, that game was supposed to be called "The Room", not silent hill related.
So i played with that in mind, and is not bad at all.
@AnEternalEnigma: You're funny, ha ha. Just don't ask me to give you the lottery numbers for next weeks draw when this game comes out.
@Amnesiac85: Because Silent Hill Origins feels like "Silent Hill We Tried to Copy the Silent Hill Formula and Did a Decent Job but with a few Huge Flaws".
The main problem with Silent Hill 4 was they threw in a few new game play ideas, some of which were fairly fun at times, but at other times very frustrating. So SH4 tried new game play ideas coupled with a brand new interesting story line and was lambasted for the game play flaws.
Silent Hill Origins tried pretty much nothing new (the "new" stuff was pretty minor) with a story line that felt too familiar (Travis -> James in SH2?) but introduced frustrating flaws in the game play. So it's like we got Silent Hill 2 for the PSP with a much weaker story line and game play issues.
SHO was a passable and decent game. It's just not great.
I really hope that Silent Hill V is not a huge letdown.
Doody. hehe
Big scares? 'Wild' looking demons? Missed the point? You bet.
This is going to be a bad, bad game. If it's anywhere near approaching even Silent Hill 4 on the good-o-meter I will eat my own arm.
@spork: What were the frustrating flaws in SH:O? Weapons could break, but if you explored like any other SH game requires, you'll still finish the game with 30+ more in your inventory. There's also way too much ammo for the guns, so halfway through you can feel free to shoot everything that moves.
Its flaw is being too short, but for a portable game I didn't feel that was too bad. The story was so great and the parallels between it and SH2 are minimal at best, largely drawn from post-game ruminations than anything given.
Alluding to the plot of SH3 as laudable makes everyone weary of this upcoming title. To me, SH:O may be the last in the series.
A newspaper from a zombie-infested city talks about a city haunted by sins and hot-chick nurses with no face.
Cool.
